10 days till the tour down under, 6 weeks at least till some kind of fudge over Contador. New year new thread.

jacky bobby crusing everyone at australian championships today - bridged to six-man break, drove it to a four-minute lead, then dropped the break remnants and soloed home from 30km out. this is a guy who's still concentrating on the track until the next olympics, apparently!

internet hardmanning clark (haitch), Sunday, 9 January 2011 14:06 (thirteen years ago) link

would like to have seen that race. I presume he'll be riding TDU, but what is the rest of his program like? Surely he should be riding, at the very least, some of the non-cobbled classics?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 10 January 2011 16:32 (thirteen years ago) link

deffo TDU, track worlds in ...is it late march i think? other than that, not sure. he struggled pretty badly at the giro last year so they're taking their time with him - might change after yesterday though. he'd be pretty suited to amstel and LBL, garmin have such a strong squad now though...

am i wrong or are sky, garmin, and leopard now all wearing black w/ blue accents?

Not wrong unless sky go with the green accents they had in ToB.

Worst possible outcome:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/mcquaid-casts-doubt-on-contadors-tour-de-france-participation

Would much rather he be declared a cheat or cleared to ride. If it's still up in the air then the win is somewhat devalued, especially if Contador is cleared later in the year.

"The finish at Lagos de Somiedo is short but hard. It climbs 1,500 metres in just 8km. That’s very tough.”

Uhhh... quick math says that's ~20% grade for 5 miles... that's more than very tough, that's insanity.

stage 4 sounds fun too:

The 200 kilometre stage is the second-longest of the race and includes two second category ascents of the Valdepeñas de Jaén; the second of these tops out just 7.8 kilometres from the finish line and could well provoke attacks. There is also a steep ramp up the finish line, including a legbreaking 27% wall with 500 metres to go.

i watched some of the video no audio of the cyclocosm thing, will catch in full later.

watching those, its worth mentioning that once contact is made, it's very "sticky," even when unintentional. that is, ime it's actually hard to get off of someone because your body's center of gravity shifts toward the other person, and then your bike subtly steers into the person, and the same on the other side. its like, the safest tihng to do once youre into someone is to just keep going and ride it out. going through a corner with full contact from shoulder to hip is unnerving, but trying to do too much to get apart can be worse (e.g. the "death swoop").

otoh, those guys are generally so good at what they do, maybe its a different game.

Prentice Steffen, SF sports MD and frequent team doc who initially gained attn in cycling world when he blew whistle on Ty Hamilton and called Lance Armstrong "an unpleasant doper" (in French! to L'Equipe!) in the 2005, is the current team med for GarVelo. He was later called to apologize to LA in writing here.

Kinda went under the radar but I found this internal leak Garvelo leak fascinating:

8 Jun 2008 06:08:01 -0700, "Prentice Steffen"

Riders and Staff,

There have been some questions and confusion about access to data
generated by the ACE testing. I'd like to clarify how this works and
then answer any questions that you may have.

First, the people who have access to the data are ACE, JV, and all
members of the team's medical/science staff. As part of our
transparency policy, we have offered to make data available to
journalists upon formal request... a couple of you have already been
involved in that process. That is a very limited and controlled
process, so don't worry that journalist have free access to the
numbers.

Second, please understand that this is about perception rather than
reality. Of course we all know the "perception is reality" thing, so
know too that while we trust everyone this issue is quite important.

The ACE data is not available to you directly because a major
criticism leveled against ACE is that it is a system put in place to
insure none of you test positive and is really a system that "aids
and abets" doping. ACE does sort of walk a fine line when you think
about it like that. If we gave you real time access to the data,
then it could of course actually be used in that manner which is
obviously not our desire or intent. So obviously much of this has to
do with perceptions outsiders may have.

It's worth pointing out here that you do have full access to your
quarterly UCI testing which I'll gladly provide to you in .pdf
format. That data is ostensibly for your health and is really quite
good in that regard.

All that said, JV and I don't have a problem if asked to look at your
ACE data and tell you whether or not all looks good. We might go as
far as to tell you some specific results to reassure you that all is
well from a lab numbers perspective. So there will be some degree of
discretion involved, but this will be our general approach/philosophy.

Sorry to be a bit of a downer after that last mass email that went
out. Nice work and thanks to all who are making that happen!!!

Questions?

Prentice

Wow. So, Boonen made his move, Cancellara countered, then put the hammer down, bridged to Chavannel, opened up a gap of a minute, Boonen couldn't find anyone to help him chase, game over - the same old story. Except suddenly it wasn't.

Garmin-Cervelo’s Tyler Farrar released a statement Monday afternoon about the death of his friend Wouter Weylandt:

I am unbearably saddened by the loss of Wouter today. As many know, he was my friend, training partner, and in many ways, another brother to me.

His death marks an irreparable change in my life but more importantly, in the lives of his family and most loved. Wouter was one of the kindest, funniest, and most admirable people I have ever had the opportunity to know and his death is a tragedy to his family, his friends, and to the sport as a whole.

I can only convey my deepest of sympathies to everyone who cared about him as deeply as I did, especially his family, his friends, his team and his fans – we celebrate his life and morn his death in equal measure.

Wouter was and is the soul of this sport we all love – an athlete who sacrificed himself for the better of many and a champion who celebrated each glory as a victory for his family, his team, and his friends and fans.

I will remember him always, and will always strive to do him proud, as he has always done for the sport and people he loves.

just terrible, i don't really know what else to say that hasn't been said already.

i can imagine there might be pressure to re-route that zoncolan stage so they don't go up and down the crotsis - apparently they were looking at ski nets for the descent anyway? but then, if it was caused by him looking backwards then it could happen anywhere.

LDDDDLWLDDLDL (cozen), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 16:20 (thirteen years ago) link

I wouldn't be surprised is the peleton either rides together that day or stops at the top to descend slowly together.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 16:28 (thirteen years ago) link

^ I can't see that happening, to be honest. The climb of the crostis will have split things up too much. The descent does look terrifying, though. But having said that, there were some terrifyingly steep, twisty and wet descents last year - I remember Nibali charging off alone on one of them. The thing is, the descent on Monday wasn't especially steep or tricky - it was relatively straight and fast. The tragic thing is he was looking over his shoulder.

Que sera sera... (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 19:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Today's stage was good, the Strade Bianche made for some great racing again. Millar did very well to chase back on to the leading group, especially considering how cut up he was from his crash, but then blew up on the climb to the finish line.

Que sera sera... (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 19:03 (thirteen years ago) link

One thing that I think will come in to play...

WW's death came very early in the race before massive time gaps had virtually eliminated the pretenders from the contenders.

By the time Crostis figures large, it will be pretty evident who is in GC contention and thus, who is willing to risk their lives to maintain balls-out speed on the descents versus those who will ride more within their limits.

it's time for the fish in the perculator (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 19:04 (thirteen years ago) link

This potentially gets tied up in the radio issue. The piece in today's guardian about the crotsis has a quote from Sean Yates(I think) about being led down he son plan by a teammate telling him what to expect. Not that the radio issue had anything to do with wouter's death but I think that it's added to an already charged issue relating to rider safety.

Even in the absence of this tragedy I would have been surprised not to see some kind of protest at the giro and the tour over he radio issue.

It's a tough call though. Nibali is an exceptionally talented descender and if coming down off the crotsis could win the giro for him; would you ask him to hold back to make a point?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 20:06 (thirteen years ago) link

is conty planning on riding the tdf?

He will if he can, but he probably won't be able to. If you don't know the story, the short version is: he got caught with a miniscule dose of clenbuterol in his blood after the last rest day in last summer's TDF; the amount was negligible and wouldn't have had any effect, but *any* amount is considered a breach of the rules as there is no natural way the drug should be in your body; moreover the amount was so small it would have been virtually impossible to administer such a tiny dose (and there would have been no logical reason to) - which suggests he might have had a blood transfusion during the rest day and this blood contained traces of off-season doping (it's been reported that he has tested positive for plasticisers, a sign of blood stored in bags, but this test has not been ratified yet so cannot be officially used); the UCI hushed up the positive result for several weeks and seemed to be giving him time to come up with a convincing story; his story was that he had beef specially imported from Spain, which nobody else on the team ate, and which came from the only cow in Spain to have been given clenbuterol; the Spanish cycling authorities cleared him of the charges on this basis; the UCI and WADA have appealed to the CAS - the verdict is due about a week after the end of the Giro (and safely before the start of the Tour).

I managed to catch the last three kms yesterday watchig RAI in Italian via the Steephill website, but it's not really the same if you already know the result.

Just watched today's EPIC stage. God, that looked tough. Nibali's not really as strong as I thought he was. He reminds me a bit of Wiggins in the 2009 TDF - a steady climber, unable to put in savage attacks, good enough for a high placing but nowhere near to winning. His thing is descending, whereas with Wiggins it's time trials.

For reals, sprint finishes on nice flat wide California roads are really nice, gives all the sprint trains plenty of space to do their thing and levels the playing field nicely. None of the silly road furniture in the last 1km that you see in a lot of races.

Hill climb TTs are good equalizers if the parcours of the other stages tilt the advantage to the fat mantis TT/sprint/breakaway artists.

But in mountainous stage races like the Giro which already favor the climbers, the selection through the mountains has been made over and over again and again x7 to the tune of about 10 minutes for the leader. Why add further to that? The final results are even further cemented now than they were a stage ago.

eh, dunno. i just don't see the future of pro cycling video in usa being distributed cable programming. the interests just don't align, no matter how much mr. browne wishes that an educated viewership could be created and fostered. i can think of programming/scheduling that that might help achieve that end, but...good luck finding a cable venue for it.

i don't think it would hurt to "teach the controversy" wrt cycling, esp now that ppl know how pervasive doping is. i don't mean to have guys being all cynical about doping and who's gonna pop next (that's what the internets are for), but yeah, have commentators be really real about it.

i haven't followed universal/nbc too closely, but what do ppl think of universal's model? they seemed to do web based shit in addition to cable.

so come right back, we have count dracula and we have adam rich (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 21:23 (twelve years ago) link

I think you're probably right (not that I see American cycling coverage, though). For quite a while I thought all coverage was pretty frank about the numerous doping controversies, but after quite a while I realised that all the frank stuff on ITV was done by Ned Boulting / Gary Imlach (the journalist/presenter types, doing their little pieces) while the commentary from Paul Sherwen and Phil Ligget barely touched on it, if at all. Which is fine: it made for a balanced programme. But then eventually I discovered that the Phil & Paul bit was syndicated to various other countries (but obviously without the Boulting/Imlach stuff), so I assume a lot of coverage does the ostrich with head in the sand trick.

Waking Suggs to make music to wake Suggs to (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 21:41 (twelve years ago) link

the Real Peloton podcast is highly recommended for the true views of Ned and Matt Rendell, they are most definitely not pro-Lance, unlike Paul and Phil, who are great commentators, but definitely Lance-enablers. Also the Flammecaste, for even more cynicism and anti-dopig talk.

Great win by Wiggins. Best British stage race performance since the days of Robert Millar. I think he's looking good for a top ten in the Tour de France, maybe even top 6.

Food Processors Are Grebt (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 12 June 2011 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

Unless he was hiding his form, I'm pretty convinced he won't podium. He can do ok with good time trials and just sticking with the contenders but I don't ever think I've seen him go out on the attack. That said, sky should be a stronger team this year, boassen-Hagen did great yesterday.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Sunday, 12 June 2011 22:22 (twelve years ago) link

He's one of those riders who can climb well at a regular rhythm, but hates the sudden accelerations that the top climbers can do. Every time he got dropped he didn't panic, he just kept his pace and rode back to them over the course of a minute or so. Because of this, I don't think he's got an awful lot of attack in him - he's usually just clinging on. He attacked and dropped Armstrong at Verbier in 2009 and he attacked the leaders on a huge climb in the Giro last year, but basically just stayed about 20 seconds clear on his own for 2 or 3 km then got reeled in and dropped. I can't remember any other attacks.

Gilbert's having a hell of a season.

Wiggins has won the British champs, and he's also the reigning time trial champ, so he'll be in white for every stage of the Tour. And, er, every other race now I think about it. Unless he's in yellow, but that seems more than a bit unlikely. Still - he's looking much better than last season and I reckon he'll get a decent placing (i.e. top ten).

I don't see how this BMC team is going to be any less of a cluster**** in the classics for Thor than Garvelo was this year. That said, BMC rode really well in those races for no reward this year, so I suppose Thor could feel like he's the one to put them over the top.

sous les paves, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

I think Thor's main source of butthurtedness was when Vaughters instructed Thor not to chase with VanSummeren up the road in this year's Paris-Roubaix. Kinda struck me as a non-team player, but if you look at all his big victories this year, he pretty much was on his own in those. I bet BMC splits up Gilbert and Hushovd on all the spring classics and grand tours so that they just rack up wins all season long. 2013 Worlds could be interesting though with Cadel/Gilbert/Thor triple attack.

I'm not saying they'll both ride ALL the spring classics (even given his impressive performances over hillier terrain in the TDF, I wouldn't expect Hushovd to win any of the Ardennes classics), but I don't think they'll ask Gilbert to sit out Paris-Roubaix or Flanders (which I would obviously expect Hushovd to ride).

Yeah, if you're like me and curious as to how an ex pro tour sprinter goes uphill... it's way faster than I ever imagined. He made mincemeat out of most of the local guys in the final 2-300m.

Can't see wiggins holding off Nibali all the way to Madrid. Even if they stay together on climbs, descents and time bonuses should see Nibali go top.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

Very pleased for Wiggins. I'd agree, it will be difficult for him to hold on to the red jersey, but I don't think it's impossible in the form he's in. He beat Nibali in the Tour in 2009 and he's looking stronger now: actually leading up the final kilometres of the summit finishes and burning rivals (including Nibali) off his wheel. Also Nibali is quite similar to Wiggins in that he hasn't got that explosive kick that a Contador or Rodriguez can use, so he's unlikely to drop him if they climb at a fast but steady pace. Nibali is definitely a better descender - are there any stages where this can be used to his advantage? There are still a lot of riders in contention and Wiggins is not really suited to a brutally steep climb like the Angliru.

Manchester United 8 (EIGHT) Arsenal 2 (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

You might be right. I don't think there is a technical enough descent (like the Zoncolan) to make descending an issue. Stage 14 could see Nibali descending to Arrive at the bottom of the final climb before wiggins but I'm not sure. I think it ay well come down to bonus seconds on mountain finishes. Sky ought to be working to keep the breaks away.

haha... column a + column b

Wiggins I'm 99% sure is clean - he's always been outspoken about doping and Sky wouldn't have touched him with a bargepole if they'd had any doubts. Froome - I honestly couldn't say. He's always been a climber, and has suffered from illness/poor form for a while but now seems better, so it's not *completely* impossible what he's doing, but it does look suspicious - especially suddenly coming second in the time trial. Cobo I've literally only come across as part of that shameful Saunier Duval debacle at the Tour in 2008, but as far as I know he's never been banned (it was Ricco and Piepoli who tested positive, but then maybe only those two (as stage winners) were tested from the team) which is why I was wondering if he was one of those riders that everyone assumes is doped, or was a good guy on a bad team at the wrong time.

Prejudice Capsule Hamster (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 4 September 2011 19:20 (twelve years ago) link

Cobo has always excelled in the mountains, esp on his "home turf" (Northern Spain, not necessarily Cantabria).

The suggestion that Cobo (proven TT/climber specialist) could drop Wiggins (tracky, converting to all-arounder) as preposterous is just a little shrug-worthy.

Give Cobo some credit though. He was unaffected by those 15-23% ramps which had the GC contenders wobbly and weaving. A+ ride today.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 5 September 2011 10:33 (twelve years ago) link

To be honest, it's never normally contested by proper continental pros. In Britain there are two different national bodies for road racing and for time trials, and the body in charge of time trials is very old-fashioned and parochial. The top British time trialers nearly all just ride time trials, setting off at stupid o'clock to grind up and down a dual-carriageway somewhere every Sunday morning. They don't do road races, they work during the week, it's a different world. A guy called Michael Hutchinson wins nearly everything every year (10 miles, 25 miles, 50 miles, 100 miles, but not the 12-hour events), but in 2009 Bradley Wiggins decided to take him on in the national championships and won comfortably, then the following year he brought along Thomas and Froome as well and they took the top three spots. He probably would have defended it this year as well, as he's only doing the Vuelta because of the crash in the Tour.

A kid I parked next to at a race last year will be racing the UCI Worlds TT today if you can believe that. His name is Andrew Talansky and he's from Napa, CA. I think he goes off around 1:30 Copenhagen time. He's racing for Garmin-Cervelo.

― citation needed (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, September 21, 2011 12:05 AM (9 hours ago)

He got 16th, just behind the heavily hyped Taylor Phinney. Not bad for his first year as a professional!

What team is Tony Martin riding for next year?

Quick Step

He'll be starting his 2-year ban next year, I'd guess (cynical pessimist, yes, sorry, but he's just TOO good right now)

Mark C, Thursday, 22 September 2011 10:43 (twelve years ago) link

Eh, fabs had a similar edge over everyone else the last couple of years, and surely he was cleahhahahahahahaha Damn this sport can make you cynical.

sous les paves, Thursday, 22 September 2011 14:53 (twelve years ago) link

It's funny, I actually (want to) believe Cancellara was racing clean but I don't want to seem like a total rube on internet message boards. What a sport.

sous les paves, Thursday, 22 September 2011 14:59 (twelve years ago) link

Tony Martin rode clinchers yesterday(!!!).

Bert Grabsch rode a 58t chainring (why???)

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:04 (twelve years ago) link

I think Martin and Cancellara are both (probably) clean. I wouldn't stake my life on it, though, and I'd be more inclined to bet on Martin than Cancellara (as I believe HTC and Garmin are genuine in the clean riding campaigns, whereas Cancellara's best results were achieved under Bjarne Riis).

It's interesting to see the decline of Canc this season. It's not just that Martin has replaced him as the untouchable victor, he's not even the second best time trialler any more. Wiggins has beaten him on at least three occasions this season (Worlds, Vuelta, and something or other in the spring - a small stage race somewhere in Europe, I forget what) and seems to have mastered the art this year of finishing second to Martin whenever they meet (Paris-Nice, Dauphine, Worlds).

there is test data to support clinchers as lower rolling resistance than tubulars, probly due to glue squirm. in a tt effort w/out accellerations (that is, rim weight not paramount), you want clinchers with latex.

unlucky to get boxed in but the dutch team could have done a lot more to control it.

Yes I agree. They had 4 up front in the last 600m.

'Main Shop of Love' Gigolo (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 24 September 2011 15:32 (twelve years ago) link

Yeahhhhh!!!! @hunt3r

Any predictions? Lotsa people rooting for PhilGil, Thor, Sagan but I think it really is gonna be a bunch sprint and not a hardman's race.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 24 September 2011 20:45 (twelve years ago) link

My prediction: I don't think it's going to be a sprint. It's way too long a race for that, 276km! Seeing the espoirs doing their race averaging it at what, 48 km/h already, I think it will go so fast that the sprinters won't have any breath left at the end.

If I have to pick some possible winners, I'll pick Gilbert, Hushovd, Hagen, Boom and Freire.

'Main Shop of Love' Gigolo (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 24 September 2011 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

Take a look at Stage 7 of this year's TdF... not quite 276km but very long esp after stage 6 which was even longer. Guess who won?

Team GB was immense, pulled all day, (with spells of help from Germany and Australia) and were still able to be there at the end.

I was otherwise engaged last weekend, but would like to take this opportunity to say Hurrah for Team GB and World Champion Cavendish you jolly good eggs!

Also: in the latest Cycle Sport magazine there is a Graham Watson photo of Wiggins just after he got dropped on the Angliru. He has no shades on and I don't think I've seen a more desolate expression.

They'll be too tired from leading out the WC to have any legs for the non-flat stages.
