I live in the same area of Towson as my mother and 7 year old brother. So, I have seen this situation take form. My mother had been letting my brother play with an 11 year old who lives down the street. I always thought that was a big age stretch. A neighbor called my mom one day and said the 11 year old had been smelling like shit lately. So she made him and her kids play outside. Her dog was furiously sniffing under her sons bed so she too a look. Shit was smeared under the bottom of the bed. She warned my mom to take a look under her beds as well.

My mom didn't find anything under her beds. But she did find shit smeared under her couch. A pile of shit under her TV stand and one Thomas the Train Table had even been smeared!

barf bag special (mistymartinez), Monday, 24 October 2005 13:02 (eighteen years ago) link

10/23/05 08:16 pm - wonderful
Did some tidying up today, and I found that someone had smeared cat shit on some of my print-outs.

This is not possible - they were in the living room, and the cat boxes are in one of the closets.
I mean, my cats don't carry their cat shit around the apartment with them.

Nice try, though. You're not destroying anything. I can always go back into Voyager
and make more printouts, including printouts of the po to indicate that the item
was replaced.

This just shows how scatalogically minded these people are.

It's true I don't clean the cat box enough - but I am depressed and otherwise
occupied, not to mention suffering from chronic headaches.

But why do I find myself defending myself like this, when they're not
even supposed to be here.

And this reminds me of a fight I had with Ken about not cleaning the cat box
enough.

It also reminds me of the 'how often do you change your towel' thread
on ilx, because I probably wasn't changing my towel enough for their
satisfaction.

I mean, these people have to break into your apartments to get
dirt on you.

And I'm sure they rationalize the fact that they use a key - it's
not burglary if someone gave you the key.

I mean, you would not believe the rationalizations these people
use. I can only hope they all end up in prison, where they'll
actually have to face someone who tells them what they did.

Have you ever talked to someone whom you know is a criminal?

If you have, you know what I'm talking about - the way their eyes
shift around, the way they can't talk without giving themselves away....

One of their justifications is that I don't own the property, that I'm
a renter, and I can only afford that apartment by someone else's
grace.

And I know "Ken" buys into all of this shit - he just rationalizes and
rationalizes. He's obsessed with education, the education he feels
he was cheated out of, and he tries to sound all 'philosophical'
when he rationalizes the most heinous things.

i lived in a shared house that had been trying to close "the case of the phantom shitter" shortly before my moving in. long story but it involved a small turd of unidentified origin in the hallway outside a shared bathroom. theories were thrown around and potential suspects were named: neighbor's cat, landlord, roommates. it remains an unsolved mystery to this day. i'm robert stack...

amon (eman), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I like both. Spend one night here, one night there. I have found much better records in the trash in Baltimore than any record store in DC.

barf bag special (mistymartinez), Sunday, 30 October 2005 16:06 (eighteen years ago) link

For record shopping, go to the Sound Garden in Fells Point, Baltimore, there are some other good stores around there too. DC doesn't really have good record stores any more. Go to Sonar, maybe? The Ottobar?

I like DC, it is much more fancy and uptight and expensive though.

Barefoot in Baltimore
Heel and toe with you

Summer turns the stove on
And fun begins to cook
Barefoot walks in Baltimore
With empty pocketbook

Laugh at sizzling sidewalks
Don't step on the cracks
Old folks try to catch their breath
As children catch their jacks

Barefoot in Baltimore
Heel and toe with you

Baltimore is music
Dancing in the street
Half-chewed Dubble Bubble
Tugging at our feet

Melted tar in crosswalks
Crab shells in the park
Pavement frying our poor toes
Until long after dark

When night comes we can go walking
On the shores of Chesapeake Bay
A silence tailored for talking
And a love with so much to say

This gat dayum record fuckin confirms for me that NEW YORK was without a doubt listening to BALTIMORE shit. 3 years before this, me and a friend did DICKONTROL. same fuckin beat.ARMAND VAN HELDEN jacked us for the beat and went to STRICTLY RHYTHM and killed us with our own shit. This is STILL to this day played IN HEAVY ROTATION in clubs here in Baltimore.LONG LIVE ZULU !!!! THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE RECORD !!! THE CATCH IS ....THIS IS A UNDERGROUND HOUSE RECORD...NOT A BALTIMORE CLUB RECORD.

they totally deserve all the dissing, BUT they're fun. so i don't care. also (if it's any consolation) scott seward, myself and confounded (who's taste in music i respect) are digging the album.

lmaoborghini (eman), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

club five is kind of atrocious but it's easy enough to get to off the red line. king tubby sound system is not mentioned in their schedule listing at all. It just says "SISTER NANCY REGGAE LEGEND LIVE!" which for their typical clientele is all they care to know or try to understand.

hey some of those boring barpunk dudes are nice folks.

dude okay, so just after i posted that last night, i was walking up charles st. around the train station at 9 pm-ish and suddenly 6 or 7 cop cars come tearing up the block, sirens blazing, only to ALL do a complete 180 and then head back down the street the wrong way, bang out a right onto mount royal, and the next thing i know they're all up in the block behind 1722/club charles, and then BACK on charles and on to parts unknown (up north ave?). there were about 10 cop cars in the area in total and at least two helicopters. i for about a minute i honestly thought it might be a wire shoot until i realized there was absolutely no cast or crew anywhere.

wtf is going on these days??

strongohulkington, Friday, 25 May 2007 16:49 (sixteen years ago) link

i THINK they might have been chasing this kid on a motorbike because he came tearing down charles the wrong way right before all the cop cars did their 180, but i have no idea why.

one time in baltimore i didn't give this lady change and she said BYE! YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL! I LOVE YOU! i know that could happen anywhere but it was really nice of her and not misanthropic at all

someone who is aware how stupid the net is (harbl), Monday, 20 April 2009 02:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Baltimore is so not misanthropic, it is a total love-fest
(except for all the people getting murdered and stuff)

but anyhoo

speaking of love-fest, if any noize people are around in Baltimore:

there is a benefit for the True Vine's tax troubles (bank account seized by the State of Maryland- oh snap)
at the Floristree this Friday night- lotsa people are playing:

DAN HIGGS / CEX / JANA HUNTER / COO COO ROCKIN' TIME (fair bros) / BILL NACE

and, er, MATMOS too!

So I don't wanna selfpromote here but it's a benefit for a groovy cause.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 15:16 (fourteen years ago) link

damn i didn't know about True Vine...love that place, if i can come out to support i will. although i'm sure the place will be full even w/o me.

Space, Floristree

could think of more or give details if u need

apparent goals of sexiness and detailed vagina mapping (some dude), Friday, 8 May 2009 15:01 (fourteen years ago) link

if you are a noise band, The Bank

if you are free improv, The Red Room

I think the Hexagon is a good starting place- they have a great PA, it's small, conveniently located (though they are tearing up Charles St. on that block right now, nice folks, not too hard to get a show there I reckon

There's a show on the 13th at the Hexagon that I should (self promo alert) mention too:

Peter REHBERG / Marcus SCHMICKLER / MATMOS with Jay LESSER
Hexagon wednesday may 13th

(or cruise out to the Key Bridge with http://www.spiritcruisesbaltimore.com/bc/sightseeing/index.jsp or http://www.clippercity.com/ladyanna.html). or if you want less touristy, go up to Mt. recs now based on recent experience - skip teh aquarium. obv. - it might be good, but an aquarium is an aquarium, and for the same price you can go to the AVAM and take a water taxi, which are much more distinctive (likewise, the Greek/Roman/Egyptian stuff at the Walters, which is free, is v good, but you can see that stuff elsewhere too). instead, go directly do not pass go to the AVAM, where the current exhibit has some great stuff. i'd say at least 1.5-2 hours. i spent twice that, including in the store. definitely play with the music box on the first floor and also the audio thing downstairs near the bathrooms (and check out the bathroom entrance on the third floor, which has the least interesting stuff). you can do water taxis out to Fells late in the day when stuff is closing and it isn't as hot out and it's beer time.

cp has the better scoop:

Others, however, say the company's move was timed to squelch a workers' vote on joining the steelworkers union. Jeanne Williams, nicknamed "Captain Smiley," has worked as a Ride the Ducks boat captain since 2003. She says safety concerns led other captains and mechanics to ask the United Steelworkers Union to represent them in negotiations with Ride the Ducks. She says long hours and neglected maintenance on the boats gave them concerns over passenger safety.

"We sought union representation from the United Steel Workers," she says, "not for money, but because we were concerned for the safety of the vehicles, ourselves, and our passengers. Management had ignored that. . . . I think they clearly got the message that we fully intended to vote for the union, and we would win the vote, so this was their last-ditch effort to stop that."

Williams says she and other employees learned of the closing Tuesday morning, when they received a UPS package outlining severance benefits, which she described as "generous," that included an agreement not to speak publicly about the circumstances of the closing. "I'm obviously not going to be signing that," she says.

Phil Ornot, district organizing coordinator for the United Steelworkers union, says he was contacted by Baltimore duck boat captains about safety issues on the boats, and filed a petition with the Review Board. Ornot says he attempted to speak with company representatives but wasn't given an opportunity.

"The company is claiming economic conditions here, tourism is down, all this kind of stuff," Ornot says. "Even if that was the case, in many places we sit down and we work with employers who have problems. The unions fight to keep jobs, and sometimes you have to sacrifice, and just hope for better times. The company never gave these people that opportunity, or gave United Steelworkers the opportunity to sit down and discuss that.

"It's just a typical story of a bigger company that is going to fight, and not let these people have a voice," Ornot says. "Their issues were not monetary at all—it was not benefits, it was not health care, not pension. All it was was over safety."

Student Fells Intruder with Samurai Sword
Man Killed after Having Hand Chopped Off by Johns Hopkins Undergrad, Baltimore Police Say

(AP) Baltimore police say a Johns Hopkins University undergraduate student armed with a samurai sword killed an intruder he discovered in his garage.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says campus security and an off-duty city officer responding to a call for a suspicious person heard screams to call police around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of University Parkway.

Guglielmi says the student told a man he found inside his garage to leave and the man accosted him. That's when Guglielmi says the student defended himself, cutting off the man's hand and causing a severe laceration to his upper body.

He says the man died on the scene, but police are not yet releasing his name.

Police are interviewing the student and his three roommates and are talking to prosecutors about whether to file charges.

am0n, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 15:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Here are some pretty important detail from The Sun that AP doesn't have:

Detectives were still interviewing the student and his three roommates Tuesday morning, Guglielmi said. Burglars had already stolen two laptops and a Sony PlayStation from the student's home Monday, according to Guglielmi.

...

The suspected burglar, whose name was not released pending notification of next of kin, had prior convictions for breaking and entering and had just been released Saturday from a Baltimore County facility, Guglielmi said.

not important

am0n, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 16:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Other articles say that the student went down to the basement with three other students to investigate the noise. I'm wondering if the "four-on-one" aspect will lead to criminal charges or not; press statements from the police are deliberately uncertain at this point. Considering that it was a burglar breaking and entering, self-defense is clear, but those numbers could influence how this is interpreted.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 04:59 (fourteen years ago) link

lol at the sun basically outlining the best course of action if YOU TOO want to learn to wield a sword lethally. Expect related articles in the future, I imagine.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 10:11 (fourteen years ago) link

The sword police recovered from the scene, with a sharp blade and ribbon-wrapped hilt, is a replica of a historic samurai weapon. Though a real one would cost thousands of dollars, Guglielmi said, this one probably cost a few hundred.

The police spokesman said the student who wielded the weapon had no advanced sword training. "He wasn't a ninja," Guglielmi said.

A 26-year-old man who was serving three consecutive life sentences for shooting his ex-girlfriend and her two daughters in 2004 was erroneously released from a downtown Baltimore prison Thursday, setting off a regional manhunt as officials scrambled to explain how he got out.

Raymond Thomas Taylor, who was sentenced in 2005 to three life terms on three charges of attempted first-degree murder, escaped from the Maryland Correctional Adjustment Center about 2 p.m. when he posed as another inmate who was supposed to be released at that time, officials said.

he's kinda sad to me, like he's searching for something he'll never find. i had a slightly uncomfortable encounter with him at a bar once, but just in a social way. he seems harmless. i don't think he embodies anything greater to me than the fact that some weird people live around here too. i'd say he's damaged somehow, but i think that about most people to one extent or another so...

depends what you're looking for... ocean city is classic for the busy/trashy boardwalk and bars, mini golf and bumper cars type stuff. rehoboth up the highway in DE is kind of a lower key version of that. assateague could be a good day trip if you're more into wild ponies and birds and outdoorsy nature things. haven't been to any of these places in several years though.

Here is her letter:
Hello, my name is Chiara and I'm a 15-year-old Italian student who went to Baltimore this summer, with my family.

I found your email address on a page of the BaltimoreSun website and I'm here to write you due to the impression my family had of the city. I actually like "bad parts" because anyways, they are a part of the city culture and everything.

We were arriving from DC and we got into East Lafayette Street and then to Berea because the GPS didn't work. You can't image: my mom, dad and sister were literally frightened of everything they saw. Nearly all the houses were boarded up, the streets were so dirty and it all seemed about crime and bad stuff. We are white and there were only black people (big, big men) looking at us in our car (Hertz did give us a beautiful Volvo but we had no idea that a car would make people look at us.. in a certain way)!

We were afraid of asking directions to Downtown so we just went straight on until we were alone and then called Hertz for info.

As I could hear and see, literally 85% of the city is a ghetto. Go five blocks north, east, or west of the Inner Harbor and you are in a war zone. 90% of the houses are boarded up, rampant drug trade and prostitution everywhere. We wanted to stay there for 2/3 days but we abandoned the idea and went back to Georgetown, DC.

Is it possible that a city like Baltimore has this effect to tourism? They say the Downtown is more or less safe but we had the chance to see 3 purse snatching in AN EVENING!

Please tell me your ideas about that and what the city is actually doing to battle against this!

Chiara M.

Ellwood Park is a neighborhood in the eastern part of Baltimore, Maryland. It is named for a small public park with a playground between Jefferson and Orleans Streets. The neighborhood extends from Ellwood Avenue to Highland Avenue, between Monument Street and Fayette Street. It is contained within the 21224 zip code. Sorry but when I was growing up this was East Baltimore not Highlandtown. Highlandtown started at the other side of Fayette Street Between Highland Avenue and Foster Avenue.

When the Tiki Barge opened early last summer, crowds flocked to the new club, soaking in the novelty of a pool party on the Patapsco. Yet for Tiki Barge's neighbors in high-priced condos like HarborView and the Ritz Carlton, the novelty quickly became a nuisance.

...

In the long, Bible-thick petition more than 40 neighbors filed with the board in December, one complainant noted seeing patrons "trampling a flower bed in the residential area."

The petition also accuses the bar's patrons of accosting neighbors, illegally parking on driveways, destruction of property, causing traffic jams, and "simulated sex with a potted palm tree."

More than 30 people, including the actress known as "Snoop" from the Baltimore-based HBO series "The Wire," were arrested Thursday morning across the city and its surrounding counties in connection with a large-scale heroin and marijuana operation.

Raids were carried out in the pre-dawn hours by agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration, Baltimore police and a slew of other federal and state law enforcement agencies.

Felicia "Snoop" Pearson, known for her drug-assassin character on "The Wire," was taken into custody at a downtown apartment on a state warrant, officials said.

The actress has a troubled past, having been convicted at age 14 of second-degree murder. More recently, she refused to testify as a witness at a murder trial and was arrested at her then-Northeast Baltimore home.

The arrests are part of a five-month drug investigation, officials said.

i was all excited to get Shellac tickets on Friday (playing Baltimore was all kinds of ?! considering their MO) and then this shit went down. it was actually a decent medium/large venue, i'm bummed to see it go. and for what seems like totally unnecessar, silly bullshit. unfortunately another reason for a lot of bands to pass over Baltimore.

i was just taken aback by how awesome it seemed. i mean, i hung out with some friends (ami dang, rjyan, our very own dr3w daniel), got hit on by some gay boys, ate some amazing food, and saw a really good show in a space that reminded me of old warehouse spots in the Tenderloin. it kind of charmed my pants off, will be back in the coming months to make my final verdict— trying to get away from oakland, but i want to give myself another few months to tie loose ends and all that bullshit.

sold my soul to satin (the table is the table), Thursday, 25 August 2011 22:32 (twelve years ago) link

Why would you want to leave Oakland?

Pizzataco Five (admrl), Thursday, 25 August 2011 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

the short version: i'm sick of being un- or underemployed, i've pretty much exhausted many of the avenues in regards to meeting potential partners (despite the gayness of everything), and you know that comfortability that a place starts to breed in one after a few years? yeah, that's happening. also, many of my good friends, including my two best female friends, are all moving away. and some other awesome people have moved recently, too. so i'm figuring: what is stopping me?

sold my soul to satin (the table is the table), Thursday, 25 August 2011 22:45 (twelve years ago) link

"The Gayness of Everything" is a bar, right?

Pizzataco Five (admrl), Thursday, 25 August 2011 23:59 (twelve years ago) link

i can't speak to the possibilities re. yr other potential reasons for moving there, and things may have changed in the last two years (some dude and amon can more likely speak to this), but baltimore is imo not the place you wanna go if yr looking for easier gainful employment

quintessential baltimore moment, talking with rjyan about the loft he was living in with 4 other people, I asked him how much it was and he said 'oh it's $150 each but we're thinking of getting a 6th person in to get it down to $120, that would be sweeeeeet' and I think I just started rapidly blinking while trying to wrap my mind around everything in his statement

today i was driving by lexington market and there was a man idly pedaling his bicycle in circles in the middle of the street. he was right in front of a parking garage's exit, so as one would expect some portions of his orbit were not visible to drivers coming out of the garage. sure enough someone almost hit him. he then followed the car and yelled at the driver, then kept circling around again as the car moved, and yelling at him again. it was pretty friendly. i can't stop thinking about it.

recs now based on recent experience - skip teh aquarium. obv. - it might be good, but an aquarium is an aquarium, and for the same price you can go to the AVAM and take a water taxi, which are much more distinctive (likewise, the Greek/Roman/Egyptian stuff at the Walters, which is free, is v good, but you can see that stuff elsewhere too). instead, go directly do not pass go to the AVAM, where the current exhibit has some great stuff. i'd say at least 1.5-2 hours. i spent twice that, including in the store. definitely play with the music box on the first floor and also the audio thing downstairs near the bathrooms (and check out the bathroom entrance on the third floor, which has the least interesting stuff). you can do water taxis out to Fells late in the day when stuff is closing and it isn't as hot out and it's beer time.

there's something about this type of white person aside from his being a racist that is really grating, it's that way of talking in a certain tone where you are pretending to be reasonable and not full of anger toward other humans. Other Considerations
Weight: Segway recommends the maximum weight of riders be restricted to 260lbs, as this will ensure the maximum battery usage. Some folks maybe a little over this weight and this will not generally affect the performance of the segway

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 27 April 2014 21:19 (nine years ago) link

yes. i felt a little bit let down by it because i had already read all the stories about it and indictments so it didn't add anything new for me. i wish they had gotten someone local to write it. i have been in the bcdc & central booking a lot. i was even visiting the day the big news came out!

flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 27 April 2014 22:03 (nine years ago) link

iirc i was not really successful at visiting that day because of their arbitrary metal detector policies and underwire undergarment fail

flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 27 April 2014 22:06 (nine years ago) link

yeah I'm guessing there was stuff in the WaPo about the indictments, but I was away and missed all of that. Trying to get my head around "[female] CO had [consensual BUT NOT RILLY] sex with [male] inmate, has baby, rolling on working as CO" thing. It's such a reversal of what I think of as "non-consensual" sex--like, the CO + inmate thing, with female (who under other situations would be considered totally consenting) having sex with man (who under under other situations would be considered totally consenting) is not in situation with female CO sexually assaulting male inmate why because that's how this stuff is legally defined? And the pregnancies, etc. . .

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 27 April 2014 22:22 (nine years ago) link

um that could have used an edit, but hopefully you get my meaning. I mean the sitch would be different WOULD IT NOT were it male COs with female inmates, oh I think so.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 27 April 2014 22:24 (nine years ago) link

haha i am having difficulty understanding the question

flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 27 April 2014 22:56 (nine years ago) link

Yeah that made no sense, sorry. Question is: "Do we treat Male CO having sex with Female Inmate differently than we do Female CO having sex with Male Inmate Y/N"?

I think Y, when both say it was consensual, which legally (iirc) is not even possible because there cannot be (legal) "consent" in a CO/inmate sitch.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 27 April 2014 23:12 (nine years ago) link

my response to this question feels complicated

flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 27 April 2014 23:27 (nine years ago) link

so it would be completely different if it was male COs and female inmates (i am 100% sure that that is something that happens in the women's jail as well, by consenting and non-consenting parties), but it cannot be compared to this situation by substitution. there are too many factors. it is a crime in maryland for a CO to have sex with an inmate. i don't think it's true that inmates--male or female--cannot ever consent. i think that was certainly a concern in making it illegal, but the bigger problem for people who make laws is that it's a crime against the administration of the jail, because you would get into this cycle of behavior where the COs have no power over the inmates. COs are supposed to have power over inmates, so in the ideal jail, sex between them would not be consensual. if COs are not successful in showing authority over inmates (as happened here), they might have consensual sex. if COs and inmates are having consensual sex, it's like they aren't even COs anymore. i don't feel capable of thinking about this in black and white, i guess.

flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 27 April 2014 23:36 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I think you have put--very astutely and with a lot more first-hand knowledge than I have--the complication! I mean it comes down to way bigger institutional realities, which is: what do you expect from your corrections professionals and is that reasonable given who you hire and what you pay those folks and the context in which you hire the (i.e. ppl who know each other from growing up in the same [challenging] neighborhood).

He also said urban casinos could "prey" on a city's poor, who can least afford risking their money. Rawlings-Blake bristles at the notion.

"I think there's a tendency for people to think we have to substitute our judgment for that of poor residents," she said. "They are aware of their financial obligations and what they can afford."

The mayor said she is satisfied that sufficient measures are in place to help problem gamblers, and that the city has sufficient "high-quality hotels, many a short distance away from the casino" to attract high rollers.

A fight broke out inside Baltimore's Horseshoe Casino on the first weekend after its grand opening.

A video of the incident shows security guards wearing yellow shirts rushing to break up the fight, which occurred in the line for Pie-Zetta, a pizza restaurant, around 3 a.m. Saturday.

"Basically, somebody said something ... to one person and they took it the wrong way," said Kevin Forrest, who witnessed the fight. He said a woman sprayed mace before about 20 security guards stopped the fight and escorted people out of the casino. Forrest, who goes by the nickname "Hollywood," took the video and posted it to Facebook, where it was shared more than 400 times by Sunday afternoon.

County Executive Steve Schuh said Thursday he will declare a public health emergency as soon as next week in response to a "heroin epidemic" in Anne Arundel County.

"It's not like it was back in the old days. That drug is not just sort of in pockets in the gritty urban neighborhoods in minority communities," Schuh told the BWI Business Partnership.

"It's everywhere, it's north, south, east, west … you name, it's there. It's every racial type, every income level. It's absolutely everywhere. And it's going to get worse if we don't go after it in a very serious way."

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Friday, 23 January 2015 15:14 (nine years ago) link

Oh no one (that you know of, Mr. Executive) of my rich constituent's kids in Annapolis or Severna Park is on heroin that's just not possible EPIDEMIC.

Three Word Username, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:44 (nine years ago) link

the solution is more arrests & prosecutions, mandatory penalties for "repeat offenders" which has worked amazingly in the past and made us feel very good because 10 years in DOC will cure anyone's heroin addiction, right? i was also disgusted to read that harford county is sending a narcotics detective to every overdose call, which is sure to motivate more people to run away rather than calling 911. best practices.

Nice. I saw a typically vociferous Britney Girl comment on an aacpd facebook post a few days ago. I don't even remember what it was. Something about catching a robber in Laurel maybe? Anyway, it made me smile.

fish or click bait (how's life) wrote this on thread rolling "Is This Racist?" thread on board I Love Everything on Apr 20, 2015

For the past couple of weeks, one of my facebook friends (a high school buddy's spouse) has been posting up updates or comments like "they're not racist, they're just BAD POLICE. there are white police shooting black kids, black police shooting black kids, black police shooting white kids. why does everybody have to keep bringing race into this?" I've been biting my tongue pretty hard because she's my friends wife and like, I'm going to be charitable and imagine they are in disagreement about this already and hopefully having fights at home about it, but holy fuck.

I just defriended this chick because her fb posts have escalated into full-on shrieking "al sharpton don't you dare come to my city with your race baiting" and "now that the national guard is here, they won't be as patient with you as the baltimore pd has. if you don't get in line you will get shot!" I was all like, ok high school friend's wife whatever, but I really got no time for this shit.

how's life, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 12:41 (eight years ago) link

i feel better about people who are outwardly racist today than i do about ppl go to baltimore unless they have to suddenly "disgusted" at the "violence" and posting things like this
https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/v/t1.0-9/11113773_965056346867280_2984175839281298353_n.jpg?oh=1d3a6c7cef65106890ba4338e4447bd7&oe=55E4467F&__gda__=1436136355_c43d526f18502e108447c392bed96e71
like, it's a picture of buildings whose owners pay no property taxes, in the part of baltimore built for white ppl to feel safe in, that is now being patrolled by national guard. and you love police. it is so peaceful.

Feel so sick

, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 12:57 (eight years ago) link

my neighborhood (like most neighborhoods) was totally unaffected as far as i know, therefore i am sick of people urging me and others to "stay safe", but i was still not able to sleep because i feel so bad about what happens here & everywhere. sirens kept me up and they never do.

computer champion (harbl), Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:02 (eight years ago) link

i couldn't go to sleep last night either. teachers of my acquaintance were posting crazy things on facebook. i wish people could just refrain sometimes. also, buildings are not the city, you know? the people are the city. people can only live without justice for so long.

qualx, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 23:55 (eight years ago) link

Turns out white people from Severna Park down to Annapolis all secretly really loved Their City Baltimore right up until yesterday. Huh.

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 06:31 (eight years ago) link

xp: "be safe" like a hundred times in the comments every time a local news story would post about county cops going into bolster the city cops.

Somebody on twitter pointed out that curfew effectively means baltimore is a sundown town

, Thursday, 30 April 2015 12:17 (eight years ago) link

bit of a stretch. the curfew is city wide. even my whitebread neighborhood becomes a ghost town at 10.

circa1916, Thursday, 30 April 2015 12:39 (eight years ago) link

I'm sure that was the goal?

how's life, Thursday, 30 April 2015 13:16 (eight years ago) link

i’m saying the city effectively shuts down across the board at 10 and that is not really what a sundown town is. like, yeah, i see how you can maybe bend it that way, but it’s an imperfect analogy at best.

Oh, Baltimore!
Have you forgotten who you are?
You're the place of Babe Ruth, Brooks Robinson and Jim Palmer.
You're Johnny Unitas, Sugar Ray Leonard and Reggie Jackson.
You're Esskay Hot Dogs, Berger Cookies and Phillips Crabcakes.
You're The Star-Spangled Banner.
You're the Raven, never flitting, still sitting.
You're Francis Scott Key and Edgar Allen Poe.
You're Blue-crabs, Bertha's Mussels and Natty-Boh!
You're Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday and Mama Cass.
You're Frank Zappa, David Byrne and John Waters.
You're Fort McHenry, Camden Yards and the USS Constellation.
You're The National Aquarium, Penn Station and Harborplace.
You're Johns Hopkins, Loyola and Md Institute of Art.
You're Mt. Washington, Federal Hill and Fell's Point.
You're The Owl, The Hippo and The Cat's Eye.
You're as sweet as Domino Sugar and you're McCormick Spice.
Don't ever forget, you're everything nice.
Once upon a midnight dreary, Nevermore!
You're The Pride of Baltimore.
