bear in mind how you wear it is an important part of the aesthetic. casually hanging off one shoulder - yes. firmly strapped to both shoulders - no no no. unless you are actually hiking.

always used to be strictly backpack-on-one-shoulder but when I did my knee in a few years ago (which my legs never quite recovered from) I had to admit that it's a lot easier to walk with a backpack on both shoulders

Backpacks a) are ugly, and b) prohibit you from getting out any of your stuff until you get to A Place. Phone, cigarettes, keys, whatever, I am gonna need that shit before I get to the office. No dice.

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:23 (eleven years ago) link

Because you have to get it off your back and hold it up to open it, it's really clumsy to get anything out while you're walking or in a crowded place. NB I go for crossbody bags mostly so that's where I am coming from.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

i think most bags that hang off your body whether backpack or messenger can look kinda silly, briefcases are probably the way to go but it can get tiring

乒乓, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:26 (eleven years ago) link

mine has a little pouch on the top that's like a secret fanny-pack, can usually get stuff out of it by just throwing the bag over a diff shoulder

ְ֮֠֓֟֬֩ (gr8080), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:27 (eleven years ago) link

the problem is as soon as you need to carry anything more than a laptop and a few files (water bottle, lunch, change of clothes), a biefcase doesnt work

ְ֮֠֓֟֬֩ (gr8080), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

yeah for sure.... at that point i just hire a porter

乒乓, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

I guess that's a problem if you have the shoulder straps super tight but if you wear them loose, you can remove one shoulder strap and swing the bag around to the front to go through it; I've worn backpacks for approx. 30 out of my 35 years of bag-carrying and have never had a problem getting things out of them mid-transit

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah my pref for looks is the one-handed duffel or bowling or bucket bag, doesn't pull your clothes around etc, but they're inefficient because you can't up the weight when you have to hand-carry.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:29 (eleven years ago) link

Things I hate include when I am standing in a queue (e.g. a bus queue) and I take my backpack off my shoulder to get something out (e.g. the bus passes which the bus company helpfully makes too big to go in a wallet) and the person behind me moves up into the space my backpack was in and is going to go back into in 10 seconds

susuwatari teenage riot (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:36 (eleven years ago) link

oh that is secretly great because you get to hit a big dummy with your backpack

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:37 (eleven years ago) link

I have a TSA friendly one, which is super handy.

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:19 (eleven years ago) link

The tapestry is almost conceptual, it's just drab-green and silver leaves, over and over. I think. It's in storage in some high place because I can't throw it away: it's in perfect cond except for the ripped strap, it will NEVER EVER wear out, and my mother gave it to me.

i am kinda surprised by how many thoughts i have about backpacks, which always seemed like the overnight bag's younger, less glamorous brother but maybe backpacks are kinda stylish. its just that its a lot harder to be cool when you're wearing one i guess unlike that suede overnight bag you casually tossed into the backseat of your convertible or w/e

I've got a vaguely ugly orange LL Bean backpack from some time in the early 2000s and I love it - perfect size, chest strap, built in camelback slot, long enough for my giant torso, and the thing just won't die. I haul my laptop, pyrex lunch container, and various books, electronic components, tools or hardware, gym clothes, and all sorts of shit on a daily basis on foot or by motorcycle and can't imagine using anything else. I actually fear the day that it wears out as I'll be sad trying to find a replacement. No laptop holder but I have a padded Chrome case that works just fine inside it.

I don't care how tacky it might look or how unhip it is - it works, fits under airline seats, and holds everything I need comfortably.

I have this which is alright but in a world of zips and buttons the buckles seem like a bit of an unnecessary inconvenience. Was thinking about getting one of the simpler Fjallraven ones having liked them when seeing them around, but shit they're disproportionately expensive, when I replace this I'll probably go for some £10 polyester piece o crap.

i thought about buying a navy one from APC last fall but hesitated because really, do i need a $200 backpack.. surely if I have to have one i can find something in navy with no logos for less than that. i only considered carrying one for taking long walks in the city - with a shoulder bag or tote bag, I can't carry much more than a book, wallet, and phone in it or my back starts to hurt.

monogrammed ll beans were absolutely de rigeur at prep school, sometimes slung hobo-style from the end of a lacrosse or field hockey stick, sometimes embellished with flowers & big loopy handwriting in white-out pen

yeah, they were at my school & you couldn't have the exact same ll bean bag as anyone else in your class & it was necessary to write on it and you absolutely had to wear it hanging off one shoulder. they used to make these dark color, simple ones with brown leather on the bottom and they were really nice, i had one of those.. it was a pricey thing for my parents to buy, i'm sure they weren't happy when it got scuffed up/written on deliberately because that was the trend.

yeah, they were at my school & you couldn't have the exact same ll bean bag as anyone else in your class & it was necessary to write on it and you absolutely had to wear it hanging off one shoulder.

At my school all the cool kids had army surplus backpacks and drew flowers and gothy pictures and band logos on them. I demanded one of these bags and then doubted my artistic talent or my ability to pick sufficiently hip bands and never wrote on it, and also had it long after the cool kids stopped having them (in fact my turning up in one may have been the signal all the cool kids needed to stop wearing them), thus singling me out as a nerd, though not as much as the day my can of Fanta burst and my backpack dripped all the way into school before I noticed

I observed the one-shoulder rule at the time, since both shoulders was definitely for uncool kids and tourists, but these days I'm not exactly going to be mistaken for a cool kid so I may as well have it where it's actually comfortable for walking. For all I know Cool Kid Backpack Etiquette has probably changed since my youth anyway.

wiki:

The word backpack was coined in the United States in the 1910s. moneybag and packsack were used before; they now occur mainly as regionalisms. The word rucksack is a German loanword mainly used in the UK and in the US Army: in German 'der Rücken' means 'the back' (the part of the body), and Sack for bag. The name Rucksack is cognate with Danish Rygsæk, Norwegian Ryggsekk, Dutch Rugzak, Afrikaans Rugsak and Swedish Ryggsäck. Alternative names include Haversack, and in German language called Kraxe (in 19th century the term kraxeln was used for climbing). (The term "haversack" more properly describes a small cloth bag on a strap worn over one shoulder, and used to carry one or more "havers" or havercakes or oatcakes.)

lol i do actually usually have a small tube of neosporin and a bottle of aspirin in my backpack-- hilarious, i'm sure

my current employment has me alternating between two offices in two separate buildings. even on weeks when i'm scheduled to be at one office two days in row, there's a chance that could change overnight, so i take my laptop and external drive home with me every night, along with some essential paper files and notes/notebook

additionally, being adverse to waste and having an affinity for coffee and water, i usually have a steel water bottle and a travel mug with me, and occasionally a small tupperware container with lunch inside

as dayo speculated, i usually have one or two cameras with me (usually just a compact point-and-shoot, but occasionally an SLR with a bulky lens).

depending on the weather, i may need to stuff a small umbrella or a scarf inside too

also, an ipad for reading material on the train as well as a small pouch with my earbuds inside

once or twice a month i might have a change of clothes with me, depending on plans

i'm way jealous of your ~everything's in the cloud, maaaan~ lyfestyle but i like having things with me i guess; kanye shrug

It's crazy to me to think that anybody without a car, or as I sometimes wistfully think of them "rolling storage lockers," could leave their home for 8-10 hours every day and not have some sort of bag, particularly if that person's job requires carrying any sort of material around. Even if women's clothing came standard with practical pockets and I was traveling light that day, I'd still have to take a purse with me to hold something to read on the train.

whoa people. i was not talking about men only!! i'm talking about everybody!

gr8080 i want to be your personal feng shui decluttering guru. let me take your points in turn.

- having your "own" computer for work is already sooooooo last decade. sit down at any desk, login, there is everything you've been working on. your profile is synced. if your office IT system can't do this now i'd be surprised but it'll happen soon if not

- water. use the faucet/water cooler at work, or wherever

- coffee. my answer to this is that i have an aeropress of my own at work, and a mug at work, and a bag of ground beans at work.

- cameras, i can't help you there. it's true, specialized equipment needs protection. if you're a shutterbug i guess you can't just have it freeballin. hmm. maybe a camera case?

- scarf. wear it.

- umbrella. hold this. if small enough stick in back pocket.

- ipad. gtfo

- change of clothes. you scamp.

.. honestly the only real dealbreakers here that require some sort of bag are the ipad and the cameras, and possibly the umbrella. part of my argument is that you do not need the cameras on your commute, and you do not need your ipad on your commute either. (i use my phone for reading material). YOU CAN DO THIS.

This conversation is infuriating because it exemplifies one of my biggest irritations: when one person (that's you, Tracer) assumes that what works for him MUST work for everybody else.

carl agatha, Thursday, 2 May 2013 14:45 (eleven years ago) link

I don't carry a bag because when I do I wind up filling it with shit I don't actually need to be carrying around. 95% of days the most I actually need is food, one book, and maybe one or two documents from work, all of which can fit in a plastic or paper shopping bag, which may not be the greatest style move but at least it prevents me from taking more than I need.

but yeah I have an office, no need for a laptop, etc.

chinavision!, Thursday, 2 May 2013 15:11 (eleven years ago) link

For ladies, there are some beautiful purse camera bags (different than reg purse in that they are more heavy duty, specialized inner dividers for camera, lens, misc purse items.

A backpack is basically a large paper bag you can use every day without throwing it out. Feeling gr80's plight here, happy to have a purse to carry my smoothie, coffee, lunch, sunglasses, wallet, gloves.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 2 May 2013 15:16 (eleven years ago) link

I use my camera bag as my bag-bag as well, for sunglasses, pen and paper, headphones, etc. but it's kinda worn and rough so I can't imagine it working well with a suit.
and of course I need a camera bag everywhere... get outta here with that.

chinavision!, Thursday, 2 May 2013 15:20 (eleven years ago) link

i will grudgingly admit that in sunnier weather my lack of a bag can be somewhat, uh, challenging. and by challenging i mean i look like i'm smuggling lego sets in my pockets.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 2 May 2013 15:20 (eleven years ago) link

Unless I'm wearing jeans, like CA said, no pockets in most of my outfits. My husband only carries a briefcase to work if he's bringing lunch, pockets otherwise, but his job doesn't require technology & he's not a photographer. He has a locker to store his coat/scarf/etc.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 2 May 2013 15:23 (eleven years ago) link

I have an office and my employer provides coffee and water (and tea and ice) and all our work stuff is ~~in the cloud~~ but I still bring a bag because 1) I work remotely two or three days/week and while I sometimes work from home, I sometimes work from other exotic locales like my couch or a coffee shop and no matter how adamantly I insist, Starbucks won't keep a computer there for me to use so I take my laptop home with me most of the time and 2) I bring lunch/snacks most days and it's actually easier to throw everything in a cross-body bag (one of these - http://www.queenbee-creations.com/items?category_id=38) and have my hands free than it is to bother with a grocery bag. Plus also no pockets and the need to carry an umbrella, reading material, wallet, phone, house keys, sunglasses, etc.

the strap on my giant digital-dj backpack ripped in two, and duct tape is only working to hold it together temporarily. i'm not going to sew it together right now, i don't have the time or the stuff or the skills. i really should learn how to do that. anyway i ordered a new backpack from amazon yesterday. it took two hours of looking and caused way too much anxiety. there are a lot of ugly-ass bags out there. i ended up spending $50 more that i don't really have on a travel/gym under armour bag instead of going for the really inexpensive stuff with brand names like Vitalismo and Kaka.

it's got that under armour bro-core thing going on but i feel somewhat more confident i'll be happy with it
