Dont see too many battle jackets round here now though they seem to be making a bit of a comeback but when I 1st loved here in 1991 ALL of them had WASP and Sacred Reich patches. Must have had a firesale somewhere.

Anyone still come across these? (non metallers I especially ask you)

Also I want smithy to post a pic of his!

Folks still wear them all the time in Dallas. I see them at every metal show, and many other shows too (there were at least 4 or 5 at the Christian Death show the other night, for example, and one at last night's King Dude gig). Most I've ever seen were at the Valient Thorr shows, but they specifically celebrate that part of the culture.

When it's 100º+ it takes dedication to rock a layer of denim or leather.

It seems to have various names http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cut-off

but the metal version is battle jacket

A cut-off, also known as a kutte or "battle jacket" / "battlevest" in heavy metal subcultures, is a type of vest or jacket which originated in the biker subculture and has now found popularity in the punk and various heavy metal subcultures. Biker, metal and punk subcultures differ in how the garment itself is prepared, what decorations are applied, and how this is done.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 13 September 2013 17:56 (ten years ago) link

Cut-offs are usually made from leather or denim jackets with their sleeves removed, or cut very short, and often adorned with patches, badges and painted artwork that display motorcycle club affiliations known as colors,[1][2] or alternatively band names, political affiliations, beliefs or sexual acts performed.[3]

In the 1970s and 1980s, cut-offs were almost always blue denim. Thrash metal fans favored heavily washed denim, while members of one British motorcycle club bleached theirs until they were almost white. From the mid to late 1990s, some punks and metalheads have worn multi-pocketed hunting or fishing vests, both in plain colours and camouflage patterns, and leather cut-offs—always popular with punks, and with bikers in recent decades.

The word Kutte (plural: Kutten) is a German loanword which literally references the religious habit of a Christian monk (from the Latin cotta, cf. Engl. coat) but that is also, in a tongue-in-cheek fashion, used for Cut-offs.

Punk and hardcore
Punk kutten are often made from leather and heavily decorated with metal studs.

In punk subculture, cut-offs are often leather (but can also be denim). Typical decorations are metal studs and badges (often painted-on) of bands or political causes, with cloth patches being secondary, ultimately because of the difficulty of doing the required needlework on tough leather. In addition, sleeves are more likely to be kept attached to the body of the jacket. As part of the DIY philosophy of the hardcore punk scene, the vests may be home-repaired with heavy thread, dental floss, or safety pins, and the band logos may be put on using paint and crude home-made stencils. Some wearers also drape chains or other paraphernalia from the vest.
Heavy metal
A pair of typical heavy metal / hard rock fans proudly wearing and discussing their "battlevests".

Cut-offs in the heavy metal scene are often adorned with patches of logos and album covers of bands, ranging in size from small square patches to large patches that fill the back panel of the vest. Patches are the main decoration; however, some Heavy Metal kutten have studs on them, particularly for fans of crossover hardcore-metal bands such as mid-1980s Discharge or of thrash metal.

well most battle jackets i see now are guys older than i am. and im pretty sure the great majority of jackets were bought from someone else. Im damn sure a lot of ppl wore patches by bands he'd never heard (my old mate from school had one he wore to donington in the 90s and he had only heard the black album by metallica nevermind the other patches on it

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:15 (ten years ago) link

Addison Doug (Matt #2), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:20 (ten years ago) link

I was told (by someone that knew them well) that a slightly renowned retro-rock band of a few years ago actually paid someone £600-odd to make up patch denims for them.

There's a bit in Whiney's Nation of Millions book saying that Chuck D and Hank Shocklee admired the way Megadeth and Maiden gave their album covers an identity by using the same logo/font every time, and how PE did the same.

Too many of these have bright new patches on them - not showing any wear or signs of battle on them. Also, if you don't devote a large part of the back to your favorite band, I think you're doing it wrong.

Addison Doug (Matt #2), Saturday, 14 September 2013 13:04 (ten years ago) link

I love the term "battle jackets."

I saw two of these in the wild at a bar last weekend. I don't remember the bands - a lot of black/death/doom metal.

Do ppl save up patches then sewed them on at once to ensure a pleasing layout or just sew as they go?

carl agatha, Saturday, 14 September 2013 13:34 (ten years ago) link

i wd buy a NWW list jacket but it shd still look like a tattered denim mess with a big centrepiece or no sale

emil.y, Saturday, 14 September 2013 14:29 (ten years ago) link

But did he have a battle jacket with a Killing Joke patch?

I had a denim vest circa 1984. Motorhead patch on the back, UK Subs & Clash patches on the front. Painstakingly replicated the Killing Joke font circa FIRE DANCES across the top of the back (in white-out) and the Venom logo (swirly, Roger Dean-esque letters) somewhat crudely beneath the Motorhead patch. In retrospect, I'd give it a B-.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 14 September 2013 14:49 (ten years ago) link

Saw a few at last night's show. Most memorably, a crusty old dude in a vest with a big old Cro-Mags patch on the back. Based on the style of denim he had to have made it in the late 80s.

Also told one young woman I was going to have to charge her $1 for each stud on her Discharge painted leather vest and her jaw just dropped. Took her 6 or 7 seconds to realize I was joking and not going to ask for $100+.

well, when I was in High School, I had a denim jacket that I had my mom sew back patches on — iirc they were Primus, Red Hot Chili Peps, Korn, Public Enemy and a few more.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 14 September 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

btw from that rnb jacket guys tumblr

t's an exploration of the music industry's relationship with fashion and branding, I intend to raise questions about the power of a brand, what a musician or a band means beyond the context of just their music, what they represent culturally or emotionally to people. When one becomes aware of this power, and re-arranges and recontextualises these symbols, it can open up new meanings and questions.

Music also has the ability to mark personal growth or change, life stages, tastes, subcultures etc. I grew up during the late nineties and early noughites when it was pretty common to just be labeled one thing, punk, goth, homie, etc. depending one what you listened to. Why limit yourself to being so one dimensional?

I also have a vested interest in exposing the hypocrisy of punk, it seems the movement (if you could call it that) was so much about 'Fuck everything, do what you want EXCEPT listen to hip hop EXCEPT go to university EXCEPT get a nine to five job EXCEPT eat meat.' I began to see it as a mini fascist regime, and the negative reactions from music fans on both sides about this project just go to prove this. That was exactly my intention."

Interesting (but not surprising?) that the rap/rnb crowd criticised it too.
I knew a ton of people in the 90s who loved metal and rap. Did nu-metal kill all the goodwill on both sides?

Obv not directed at USA me but I love these things and had a pile of them from state fairs/boardwalk games as a kid. Also feathered roach clips. Totally appropriate prizes to give to 10-year-olds.

I totally won a coke mirror at the state fair in 1985 but for the life of me I can't remember what it was. I passed up the opportunity to buy a purple rain one this summer for $5 which is a sign of something I guess. I also never new what they were for until the beastie boys line, but always knew them as roach clips and had no idea what they had to do with bugs.

Surely somebody has by now made the tuxedo t-shirt version of a battle jacket, right?

I won a roach clip at my school carnival in 1st grade. Around the same time I got a Transformers coke mirror from the county fair or something.

I have two of these, but I always called them "crust vests", not Battle Jackets- maybe that's just me? I dunno.

Here's the front of the first one; you can see the Disrupt and HellHammer patches but not the Cremaster patch

http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b636/DrDrewDaniel/DisruptCrustVestFront_zps3b87d582.jpg

and here's the back of that one, with a Merzbow back patch and a C.B.T. bumflap thingie:

the tune was space, Monday, 16 September 2013 02:17 (ten years ago) link

my second one is simpler, just a "charged" field of spikes with a Matmos patch (patch was custom made for me by a street vendor in Nepal!):

http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b636/DrDrewDaniel/MatmosCrustVest_zps66291f6a.jpg

and here I am wearing it (shades of wdyll):

Maryland DeathFest had so many great, crazy ass examples of this "extreme metal craft", where some dude from a small town in like Alabama had color coded ones, like one with all orange n black fonted metal logos that he wore on one day, and another that was all blue and black and white logos on another day- very OCD and obsessive.

My friend Jane has a killer vest that has a giant Kate Bush back patch on it, truly rad. Wish I had a pic cuz it's a beauty.

Also: what about crustpunk stylings where it's on a plaid shirt or a black military jacket rather than denim? I see that a lot at shows.

I had a denim jacket with patches growing up and was intending to do the vest over leather jacket thing, then I got a leather jacket and realized I didn't really want to wait to break it in and traded it for a guitar. I had a Venom - From Hell to the Unknown backpatch and various thrash metal patches on it (Big 4 bands, which were easiest to get, and Venom's Legions and Carcass patches because I loved Carcass like crazy).

Denim was probably acid washed btw. It was the eighties!

These are awesome! They're not that popular in here... It's been years since Inlast saw one (biker gang logos notwithstanding). I could really see Zara or Pull N Bear selling them and bringing them back for a season.

Would love to make my own ironic one.

All those big back patches, small ones, iron ons, studs, all on ebay

SeanWayne, Friday, 3 January 2014 08:11 (ten years ago) link

Couple of teenage kids with starter battle vests came into the store the other day. One of them was wearing tight zebra print pants. Other one had seriously old looking patches and I asked him if his "Bonded By Blood" patch was vintage, he got this kind of proud look on his face and said "Hell yeah!"

barranca jagger (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 3 January 2014 08:18 (ten years ago) link

Some of the big ones look like cut out t shirts? Could that work too? I'll be definitely making one later this year!

Moka, Friday, 3 January 2014 08:21 (ten years ago) link

You can definitely use a t-shirt, I remember people doing this with bands that didn't have backpatches available. It's a little tricky because t-shirt fabric is stretchy, I think.

Has anyone seen a good battle jacket lately?

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 15 August 2019 22:39 (four years ago) link

I saw loads of great ones at the King Diamond gig last weekend,

I’m currently making a new battle jacket since my old one from the 90s accidentally ended up in the trash (don’t ask), which has me thinking about some of life’s great questions such as: cut off the collar yes or no? Are studs ever acceptable or trying too hard? Bullet belt on the bottom too much if you already have one on yr jeans?
