"Got to give it up" Vs "Don't stop til you get enough"

Based on the following post in the "Blurred Lines" Vs "Get Lucky" thread.

[q]The song, "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough", written solely by Jackson and recorded the same year as "Shake Your Body", took even more of Gaye's approach with the entire song, using percussive instruments as the basis of the song and a continued funk guitar riff, that was also present on "Got to Give It Up". Jackson sings most of the song in falsetto though he also adds tenor vocals in the bridge. Jackson and producer Quincy Jones added in strings to make the song different and an original. Much like the party chatter in "Got to Give It Up", Jackson added in vocal chatter, however, the chatter would later be debated as two people having a verbal argument while the tape was recording (a woman could be heard hollering "man I hate your ass anyway!"). Jackson and Jones allowed the argument in the recording.

I had never noticed the resemblance between these two tracks but after reading this, it seems obvious.
To me it's a good case of someone being heavily influenced by someone else's track and make something new... and better ! (i.e not what Thicke and Pharrell did with "Blurred Lines" which is fun but still...).

Marvin's is cool and "don't stop" is far from my favourite MJ tracks but it's still amazing.

How does this tie into Blurred Lines?

how's life, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 11:31 (ten years ago) link

uh ? well, the "got to give it up"/"don't stop" parallel was discussed in the "blurred lines" thread and I thought it was interesting, that's all !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 11:33 (ten years ago) link

But what does this mean?

i.e not what Thicke and Pharrell did with "Blurred Lines" which is fun but still...).

Sorry if I'm coming off all Tuomas here. I've got a head full of cough syrup right now.

how's life, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 11:39 (ten years ago) link

ah, it means "don't stop" was heavily inspired by "got to give" but became something new and great/better whereas "blurred lines" was heavily influenced by the same song but is just a fun variation of it. I enjoy it as a good summer jam, though !
it's just about transcending (or not) your inspiration.

"Got To Give It Up" isn't even my favorite Gaye song from the period ("Ego Trippin' Out" wins), so I vote for "Don't Stop..."

I'm guessing G2GIU scores higher on the disco poll given the lack of competing Gaye disco.

I always thought "Don't Stop" was basically a lesser rehash of "Shake Your Body" (which I preferred and still do) and I got weirdly resentful as an 11-year old when it overtook "Body" on the local pop chart. And then "Don't Stop" won the Grammy and became a classic while "Shake Your Body" was virtually forgotten, and I became deeply cynical.

So I'd give it up for "Got To Give It Up" out of pure spite even if I didn't prefer it.

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 15:03 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I still prefer "Shake Your Body" too; it doesn't seem as beaten into the ground. As much as I've played both DJing out, I never really noticed the similarity between the Green and MJ tracks, and I'm not sure I ever sequed them together. (These days my go-to Jackson-related cut is "Hum Along And Dance")

I have always loved "shake your body" but the production is nowhere close to the near perfection of the tracks on "off the wall" and "thriller".
I'm not a big fan of "don't stop" but it sounds amazing !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 15:47 (ten years ago) link

Oh yeah, production on "Don't Stop" >>>>>> "Got To..." Gaye kinda simmers along (BPM experts could tell me the difference between the two) - it's a great groove, but it doesn't have the wow factor of the MJ.

This. "Shake Your Body" is great. "Don't Stop" is a masterpiece.

(And "Wanna Be Startin Somethin" may be better than either, if you wanna talk about MJ things that got unfairly overshadowed by other MJ things.)

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:01 (ten years ago) link

oh yeah, "wanna be startin" might be his greatest moment ever, not necessarily in terms of songwriting but just... the sound of the future (with Giorgio's voice) !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:05 (ten years ago) link

The origins of "Wanna Be..." as documented in the Nelson George book on Thriller are awesome. Apparently the West African performer who came up with the chant got points on the song, so he's a very rich man, I hope.

Manu Dibango, or did it come from someone else?

Byron E. Coli (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:14 (ten years ago) link

yeah, I think it was Dibango's soul makossa ?

that's not a slam dunk though. i love the earthy, effortless groove that simmers under "got to give it up". something slightly wounded (or at least fragile) about it, darker & dirtier than any mj i know. it's not a knockout, it's an embrace, gentle at that. depends what you want.

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:29 (ten years ago) link

"Got to give" has a great groove but it's more laid back.
like a smooth before party with drinks with some friends.
"don't stop" is the moment the party goes full blast !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link

I'm fine being in both places.

Actually, Manu Dibango sued MJ and they settled out of court. Then he more recently sued again when Rihanna sampled it; she got permission from MJ but not Manu: http://pitchfork.com/news/34538-manu-dibango-sues-rihanna-michael-jackson/
