Been listening to this (free) album heaps and heaps and heaps, and surprised that it doesn't appear to have floated ILM's boat, given on paper its fusion of Prince and Scritti Politti (or perhaps rather their modern counterparts The-Dream and Owusu & Hannibal) should generate 100+ posts.
Admittedly, it's kinda slight. But something about its slightness seems essential to its vision.

Check "Slow Motion", "Uh Oh It's Love", "You're The Only One 4 Me", "The Luckiest One".

I didn't even know about it! And I love Sa-Ra.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 6 April 2013 20:43 (eleven years ago) link
Apparently it's been out since January! But zero ILM copy. I can be forgiven because I'm never up on anything anymore.
Surely Andy K must have an insightful opinion?

In other news can't believe that stupid me only discovered this year how life-changing the Shafiq Husayn album is.
― Tim F, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:38 (eleven years ago) link
yeah, that album is stupidly great. I hope this one is as good.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:42 (eleven years ago) link
It's not as good, but it's very good.
That relative distinction doesn't mean much. En A Freek A and Embrya are the only things to join my "stuff I missed at the time but are now amongst my favourite albums ever" category in some time.
― Tim F, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:50 (eleven years ago) link
Apparently I was the only one to vote for it on the ILM poll that year http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-colbert.gif

I'm deeply sorry.

En A-Free-Ka is amazing. psyched to hear City Pulse, thanks for pointing this record out.

new Shafiq jam btw, it's pretty smooth

this is really very good, i was totally not expecting something so enjoyable. thanking u tim!
keith's louchely witty croon is reminding me a lot of a less-loony peven everett, although 'explode' could just as easily be ty$
wasnt quite on the scent of the scritti ref (general pleasure principle aside), and then i heard 'all alone with you' - excellent

i was just gonna bump this thread cuz i was listening to this on the train and on headphones you're constantly going "oh shiiiiiit" and every one of the million amazing sounds that pop up in every song
am sure i heard erykah on one of the songs

ftr i was more impressed (with the iirc sheer chewy density) than ever especially enamoured of the shafiq lp; not even that for the sa-ra ones

Chipping in w/the acclaim - thanks for posting about this in the rolling R&B thread. So, this is a lost/shelved album from a few years back?

This hints at an answer re when some of this was recorded
In 2009, through his intern Michael Uzowuru, he met a little hip-hop collective called Odd Future and a dude named Frank Ocean. The two developed a relationship that would eventually lead to Keith's work on channel ORANGE. Keith was thrilled and, in another smart move, threw himself into the work with Ocean, putting his solo project on hold.

this is pretty inspired except I swear it's the loudest album I ever heard and kind of hard to listen to because of that

Slow Motion is really fucking horrible and so I'm very relieved it's not all in that vein.
― Matt DC, Monday, 15 April 2013 18:08 (eleven years ago) link
this is great. listening to the first two songs (didn't really enjoy the ultra-compressed 'slow motion', tbh) i was afraid this could be an absolute mess, but thankfully it turned out to be a benign mess that works.
also, 'pulse of the city' (the song) is reminding me of something (most likely the overall feel of it, other than the melody), but i can't quite put my finger on it...

iirc there was one song on shafiq-en-afreeka that blew my mind. i don't have speakers/headphones with me rn but "lil girl" looks familiar?

"Uh Oh It's Love" always makes me think of Ultra Vivid Scene.

the "explode" thru "u know i want u" stretch is so glorious - love the sudden shift into twinkling electro on "the luckiest one"

Agreed.
He should do more slow jams like "You're The Only One 4 Me" IMO.
