Lydon's been making a fool of himself in one way or another for 35 years. (I should say I haven't read his books, which are supposed to be good.) But I'm with Marcus there (he's talking about some Sex Pistols reunion show specifically, but I'd extend it to pronouncements like Lydon's today):
"My attitude was these people did so much to make the world a more interesting place, that I don’t care if they go on every five years for the money: they deserve it. They can’t be repaid for what they did – that’s how I feel about it...If they’d all become bankers, or arms merchants or mercenaries in Iraq or something like that – those records would still be there and they would still be things in themselves. And the creators could not hurt them."

Well, if he's complacent enough to view the situation as nothing more than entertainment, that's something of an ideological position in itself, but I think he said more than that? There's more of the interview here (although it's mostly quoted in the text of the Independent article). He said he stands with the working class in favour of Brexit. (And if I understand how the British class system works, which I definitely don't, I'm guessing this probably means something like "white working class".) And he said "the left-wing media" is smearing Trump as racist, which he doesn't think is true (but many of us do); and that it's a very good thing that he's "terrifying politicians" (again, not something that everyone agrees with).

― Mark G, Tuesday, 28 March 2017 15:28 (seven years ago) link
this is a weird claim for Marcus to make, given his insistence, elsewhere, on the important of context. an artist's later work and actions enrich/further/complicate the context of their earlier work, at the very least. if that work has, in the past, been political in nature/focus, then an artist's expressed political opinions might also further illuminate/complicate the earlier work. earlier work doesn't exist in some weird bubble where nothing that comes later can touch it; even the experience of being moved by that earlier work can be complicated in severe instance (where the artist later goes on to commit murder, say).

Lydon channeling Brendan O'Neill
Brexit is actually the most rock’n’roll thing to have happened in a generation. What we have here is ordinary people, including vast swathes of the working class, saying ‘No’ to the status quo, sticking two fingers up at an aloof elite, channelling Rotten and Vicious to say screw you (or something rather tastier) to that illiberal, risk-averse layer of bureaucracy in Brussels. It makes the student radicals of the 60s and even the anarchic punks of the 70s look like rank amateurs in comparison. Sure, those guys might have waved flowers against the Vietnam War or put safety pins through their snouts, but did they send the political class, the chattering class and the business elite into an existential tailspin by delivering a severe sucker punch to these people’s favourite institution? No, they didn’t. Brexit did, though.

On another note, I've only seen Lydon in-person once (in 2018 at PIL's Brooklyn stop), and I was surprised by how sheepish he seemed to be when he wasn't on and the music wasn't playing. During a song, it all melted away, and it was still like daggers when he flashed that famous stare directly at you, but outside of that, he seemed like a polite, harmless and insecure guy. I hadn't seen a picture of him in a while so I thought maybe it was because he had put on so much weight. (He seems to have lost a bit of it now.)
