Greatest bands ever that released, like, nothing basically

The Screamers seem to win this category for me right now...

...but the second runner up has to be Dickless, who released "Saddle Tramp", "Miniskirt Mob", and "I'm a Man" (a Bo Diddley cover somewhere underneath the noise, me thinks).. and that's it. By the way, not only are Dickless still my favorite grunge act ever, but my favorite all female rock act ever.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 28 September 2002 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

nervous gender, and the highback chairs.

mike (ro)bott, Saturday, 28 September 2002 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Omnium had a great jazz-fusion-funk-dance track called "Extua Textua" four years ago on the Ninja Tune Funkungfusion compilation, then released a four-song EP shortly thereafter (with three new songs), then apparently disappeared off the face of the earth.

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 28 September 2002 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

East Flatbush Project.. only released what, like 2 tracks? Both were really good but nothing since. I guess it's not a steady group or anything, but damn, at least there could have been more than 2 tracks.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Saturday, 28 September 2002 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

every band I've ever been in

charlie va, Saturday, 28 September 2002 04:13 (twenty-three years ago)

the nerves. a four song 7" in '76 then split into lesser bands.

i think the beat's debut far exceeded paul collins' contribution on that record but, despite writing the better songs, jack lee's solo album sucked. ditto the plimsouls. too slick. peter case is still best looking though. paul collins is bald w/funny hats.

it really comes down to valley girl soundtrack vs. caddy shack soundtrack.

ps. there was an irish punk band called the nerves i think? could someone tell me something about them? though maybe this isn't the right place...

brian badword (badwords), Saturday, 28 September 2002 06:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Knights Bridge. 60s Texan garage/psych band who only released one brilliant single, both sides of which are collected on one of those ace 'Texas Flashback' comps. I mean, there's literally hundreds of these Stones/Yardbirds clones, most of 'em at least semi-gd, but this bunch really stand out - they sound like Wire! (a bit)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 28 September 2002 06:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I should mention the Stereo Shoestrings as well... forgotten band from Corpus Christi, TX who released the most fuzzed out song of its time... "On the Road South"

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 28 September 2002 06:39 (twenty-three years ago)

and spitboy...

mike (ro)bott, Saturday, 28 September 2002 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lori and the fucking Chameleons.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 28 September 2002 07:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Both Dickless and Lori and the fucking Chameleons released 2 singles. Theoretical Girls - ace '78 NYC band featuring Glen Branca and Wharton Tiers released only one seven-inch. But I guess the fact I know about them, because someone's just retrospectively released a full album of their material counts them out.

Both Dickless and Lori and the fucking Chameleons are fucking great bands, agreed. Dickless DO rule the Grunge Roost, no messing.

Both The Capitols and the Atom Spies (Birmingham bands, mid-80s, the latter an early band featuring a couple of members of Asian Dub Foundation) only ever released one record, shamefully. So've Valerie (present day, Manchester female trio) in three years, but I reckon that might soon change...

Did Sophisticated Boom Boom (much beloved early 80s Scots cute girl band, played on Peel several times) EVER release a record? Even better than Strawberry Switchblade they were...

Jerry (Jerry), Saturday, 28 September 2002 08:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and speaking as someone fortunate enough to see Dickless play live several times - yes, they were fucking blistering live, too.

Jerry (Jerry), Saturday, 28 September 2002 08:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Kreviss. If anybody can produce evidence to prove otherwise I would appreciate it greatly. Jerry would probably know of them actually

dave q, Saturday, 28 September 2002 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

the male nurse (3 7"s), sweet jesus (3 7"s)

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 28 September 2002 09:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the scruffs, la volume courbe, trashmonk (though he is doing soundtrack work at the moment), the misunderstood (i can take you to the sun...), william shatner, sun ra's novelty band covering the batman themes and other strange things, baby jane holzer's pop single, edie sedgewick (hey - she could not sing so what - neither could nico) ...

doomi, Saturday, 28 September 2002 09:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I should mention the Stereo Shoestrings as well...

oh, yes! that one track is amazing, but there are so many 60s bands that had one amazing track (johnny thompson quintet, catfish knight, twilighters, elastik band, the rats) and nothing else worth hearing.

how about the post-this heat 'flaming tunes' cassette? or any of the n-million projects the members of the homosexuals were involved in (milk from cheltenham, george harassment, just measurers, etc)? primitive calculators? ALL OF THE BANDS ON "I HATE THE POP GROUP" - i mean, for god's sake, when will i ever find a copy of the prats 7" or anything by men/eject?

your null fame (yournullfame), Saturday, 28 September 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

the sin eaters, around in 97 / 98, members of chisel, native nod, van pelt... fucking incredible band who recorded a demo toured europe with the van pelt and broke up about 3 months afterwards. I saw them about 6 times and have the demo. a bunch of the songs later surfaced on ted leo solo records but jesus they ruled as a band...
teh sreamers are incredible too (even if I do only own one song by them)

simon 803 (simon 803), Saturday, 28 September 2002 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Superball, a really bizarre anti-music dadaist highschool girl trio from Japan. They released one self distributed cassette EP (barely 10 minutes of atonal jamming), a 24 second track on an all-female group CD compilation, and (amusingly for a band so unknown) a tour video, featuring an entire tour's worth of performances in 45 minutes. Were meant to record a double album for Estatic Peace! but dropped off the face of the earth before that happened. I've got the EP, and would have the video but my VCR isn't NTSC compatible.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Saturday, 28 September 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Male Nurse, but...surely they had an album?

And I love Kreviss too. (It has occured to me on numerous occasions that I know too much about this sort of thing.)

Jerry (Jerry), Saturday, 28 September 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Atomic Firballs from Japan. Only released ( I think) a double 7" sounded like Slayer taking the upper hand in a S/M dungeon session with Minor Threat. Great live act, everyone loves it when they put on the Godzilla helmet

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 28 September 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

did the male nurse have an album jerry? i never saw one, if there was one, could you get back to me (either on or off board) with details. i'd love a copy of that

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 28 September 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm. Could've sworn Male Nurse did, but just checked (my admittedly gaping) record collection and can find none. Maybe I'm confusing it with the seven or whatever Yummy Fur ones I own...sorry to needlessly raise your hopes Gareth. I think I'm wrong.

Jerry (Jerry), Saturday, 28 September 2002 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

There was going to be a Male Nurse album but I think someone in the band died, and it was shelved?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 28 September 2002 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

The Screamers seem to win this category for me right now...

A "gray market" 2-CD compilation was released last year. Some of it's very good, some of it's horrible. The sound quality sucks, that's for sure.

Jody Beth Rosen, Saturday, 28 September 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael Gira was searching desperately for Screamers stuff for a while before that comp came out. Nothing but bootlegs of them back in them days...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 September 2002 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Are The Go! Team still a go!ing concern? (DYSWIDT! etc) They put out excellent fantastic aces Get It Together 7" on Pickled Egg in late 2000ish and as far as i can tell this is all they've done. And it really really is/was tremendous.

alexfack, Sunday, 29 September 2002 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Bands that limit their releases:

Math- skronky neo-no wave, along with a unique concept album. At the height of my mania, I paid $80 for their first LP.
Volcano the Bear- Their recent release on Beta Lactum Ring Records is amazing. This botique record label by the way is notorious for releasing as few as 10 copies of a 220gram vinyl box with individual artwork and copious inserts. Most of their records sell out in pre-order for the packaging alone.

With the ease of recording and releasing your own tape/7"/cdr these days it would seem that bands failing to release anything will soon become a thing of the past. Although, I have seen incredible "local" bands in various places that never play shows outside of their basement and never even bother to name themselves.

Ryan McKay, Sunday, 29 September 2002 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Zolar X. I always say that, though. How about Shox Lumania, the NY No Wave-era New Romantic band. Or the Creeping Ritual, the proto-Gun Club. Or the '77 LA Punk In Crowd Girl Group the Plungers. Don't know if they ever had any songs, though. Or the Young and the Useless, a pre-"Cookie Puss" Beasties spin-off? I think Ad Rock was the drummer who wouldn't shut up. They were really cute.

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 29 September 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Their recent release on Beta Lactum Ring Records is amazing.

i swear to god, if i ever see the guy who runs this label, i'll break his fucking nose. this art/boutique music shit has got to die. i love volcano the bear but no way am i paying more than $40 for a new LP.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 30 September 2002 06:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Alexfack,

The Go! Team have a mini album coming out on Pickled Egg soon...

flowersdie, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Sheffield's The Past Seven Days - one great single on 4AD in 1983-ish (Raindance/So Many Others) and then nothing else. SMO is devastating - bass-heavy Factory-funk with a Moog solo which comes from nowhere.#

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Hopkirk & Lee.

one 7" of utter brilliance and then nothing.

oh, and Swoon 19. :)

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe Volcano the Bear is releasing / has released a slew of live CD-Rs via those art / boutique music shitters vilified previously. (That'd be Beta Lactam Ring, BTW.)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

POWERDRESSER!

damn straight! At least a record and a single or so.... I think you might be able to construct your own discography CD from www.mp3it.com, but I'm not sure anymore...

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Hopkirk & Lee.

This answer owns this thread.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Lori and the fucking Chameleons - amen.

Can I say Me Me Me without getting things thrown at me?

Charlie (Charlie), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno that a "supergroup" really counts..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

CWA - only two tracks on compilations afaik.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

hopkirk and lee only had one good track - Free Arthur Lee. the other stuff on their Ep sounds like Simple Minds.

danny freeman, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

danny, even if that were true (which i would disagree with) that's not exactly a bad thing. :-p

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a good surf punk band in Bloomington, Indiana in the early 90s when I was going to school called Speed Luxury that I wish got a chance to record a real album with a good engineer.

They only recorded an EP that wasn't near as good as they were live and they held back their best songs for the album which never happened. R.I.P.

earlnash, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Monkey 101!!!!! they had 2 songs on one 7 inch, and both are great enough to make Monkey 101 statistically the best band ever.

sashwap, Thursday, 3 October 2002 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

NYC's Chain Gang. If 2 singles counts as next to nothing.

Smith, Thursday, 3 October 2002 01:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Bingo Handjob.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 3 October 2002 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe Volcano the Bear is releasing / has released a slew of live CD-Rs via those art / boutique music shitters vilified previously. (That'd be Beta Lactam Ring, BTW.)

they were released a while back (i think they're intending to do more) and they were even reasonably priced from some outlets ($8 or so) AND they didn't sell out instantly to people who value their records via the market and not the music...

your null fame (yournullfame), Friday, 4 October 2002 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a Chain Gang album, it was okay.

hstencil, Friday, 4 October 2002 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

eight months pass...
I say "ditto" to the SCreamers, Theoretical Girls, & The Nerves, although the SCreamers had at least 2 full-length releases........

Let me add: Les Rallizes Denudes (if you see it, its probably a bootleg, though they were on about 4 legit releases.)
the Restraints (one 7" & one compilation track. great Atlanta punk band.)
The Chant (2 very limited LPs, one cut on a Saints tribute LP, & one 7". Killer GA/FL psychedelic pop sound.)
New York Art Quartet (astounding free jazz band. only one release.)

John

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Thursday, 5 June 2003 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Tintern Abbey! (a single 7")

Sekret Sekret (pre-Cruel Sea, only four 45s released).

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 5 June 2003 02:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I say "ditto" to the SCreamers, Theoretical Girls, & The Nerves, although the SCreamers had at least 2 full-length releases........

Not legit full-length proper albums... but there was a semi-bootlegish 2-CD Screamers anthology that came out in 2001 w/ live performances and demos and whatnot. Sound quality is atrocious, but it's better than nothing.

Theoretical Girls had an anthology out late last year, plus there was a Branca comp released sometime in the mid '90s with some of that stuff on it.

The Nerves put out one EP.

Politburo.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 5 June 2003 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

politburo ...

yeah we had a band called politburo in our town too and they were great but morphed into an even better.

band, that is.

bands who never got any records out

never got written about in the press
this song's dedicated to open up
this song's dedicated to said liquidator
this song's dedicated to supersaurus
this song's dedicated to aaga, kicks, the interrogated,
seize the infidels, chance and laverne and shirley..."

sweeping the nation, 1997.

piscesboy, Thursday, 5 June 2003 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Kreviss, mentioned upthread, had one and a half singles (one was a split with Mecca Normal that contained their stunning "Going To Hell").

My votes go to Invisible Sex (one AWESOME song in "Urgh! A Music War" that didn't even make the soundtrack, and no other record of their having existed) and Laito Lychee (unbelievable artpunk/riot grrrl band that put out one 40-second song and one 8-second song on a Japanese compilation I've only heard once, though I saw them play live a bunch of times; two of them eventually became the very different Cibo Matto).

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 5 June 2003 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Did Catholic Discipline ever release anything?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 June 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Bored Cops, the first and best emo band. They released one single in 1982 or 1984 (I've heard both dates) and nothing else, not even a compilation track. The only information I've been able to find out about them is that they were from Illinois.

Vagina Dentata, a post-Germs pre-Celebrity Skin band (Pat Smear, Don Bolles, Tim Ferris, fronted by naughty Michelle Bell) were a great live band for one night anyway. They covered "Out On The Tiles".

dan (dan), Thursday, 5 June 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

there used to be this amazing band in glasgow called We Are The Men.
this was in the late 80s and yes, they were an all girl group.
sorta proto-lungleg (if you ignore kleenex of course)
oh, and i remember that the drummer would play blindfold. yey!
i've no idea if they ever released anything....

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 5 June 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Indian Summer--one 7", three split 7"s and tracks on, I think, two compilations that weren't unique to the compilations.

Anton Bordman--two 7"s

Rain Like The Sound of Trains--three 7"s

Black Masks For Secrecy--just a demo

Ian Johnson, Thursday, 5 June 2003 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Vagina Dentata, a post-Germs pre-Celebrity Skin band (Pat Smear, Don Bolles, Tim Ferris, fronted by naughty Michelle Bell) were a great live band for one night anyway. They covered "Out On The Tiles".

Vagina Dentata had a track on the second Flipside Vinyl Fanzine comp.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 June 2003 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

John Bullabaugh will be excited to learn that there are in fact two New York Art Quartet records. In addition to the first, self-titled one on ESP, the group made a second, Mohawk for the Fontana label. In fact, I'm pretty sure there was a cd reissue of it a few years back, but it may have once again gone out-of-print. Definitely worth scaring up, though.

And pre-revive, sashwap mentions Philadelphia's Monkey 101 - yeah they were fucking great but they actual released two 7"s. One on Siltbreeze, and a three song one on their own label (whose name escapes me and the record is boxed up at the moment).

Gosh I dunno if I have a nominee. Maybe I'll go with the great Pleasure Seekers from Detroit - Suzi Quatro's first group! As far as I know they only released two records, one on Hideout and one on Mercury, but they were godly. "What A Way to Die" being one of the best records ever.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 6 June 2003 01:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Vagina Dentata had a track on the second Flipside Vinyl Fanzine comp.

*smacks head* I was racking my brain trying to remember where I had heard of them. Thanks.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Friday, 6 June 2003 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i second mr. diamond's pleasure seakers nomination. what an amazing band. pure rock, youthful nihilist heaven.

rocket from the tombs

they existed in 1975 and went on to become pere ubu and the dead boys. never released anything officially when they were around, but there is a cd put out last year compiling live tracks, etc. totally blistering proto-punk.
