otm. We had a copy of The Kids Are Alright documentary growing up, and watched it religiously, and that performance of "A Quick One" was just the best thing ever.

Funny thing about the R&R Circus performance is that they couldn't get arrested in the UK at the time. "Dogs" and "Magic Bus" had stiffed, and while Cream and Hendrix were selling out Albert Hall, the Who were back playing the Marquee.

I imagine being at a Who show in the 70s and hearing them start up a 15-minute version of "Magic Bus" = beer/bathroom/joint time

"Magic Bus" is one of those songs that has annoyed me since i was a kid, has only been redeemed for me by the explosive Live At Leeds version. ended up not even doing a least favorite list on my ballot, though, felt like all the big hits i don't like have their merits and i don't have much passionate dislike for the album cuts i don't enjoy.

(lol xpost)

Not a huge fan of the studio version myself, but every live version I've heard (even from the 2000 tour) is completely and brilliantly insane.

xp I didn't do a least favorite either. They're my favorite band, and I've liked most of those songs at some time in the past. I'll have to look up the forgotten "Why Did I Fall for That?". It can be my new underated Who song I have loved.

"Magic Bus" has some cow bleat sound or vocal mixed in the chaos of the studio version that I always thought was my dad yelling at me to turn it down from the other side of the house.

riding old whitey (Zachary Taylor), Saturday, 8 September 2012 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

Said bleating is the voice of one Jess Roden from The Alan Bown Set.

I love "Magic Bus," but I'm pretty partial to the Who's goony/goofball side. Much more than their strident '70s rawk stuff, which made up all of my least-favorites.

Late to this, but the most perplexing thing about the ten worst was how did "Guitar and Pen" miss? (Other than me not being arsed to do any worst songs.)

"Long Live Rock" (which would've made a great Sleater-Kinney cover) and "Magic Bus" almost but didn't make my main ballot. It's funny how the latter and both "The Real Me" and "Love, Reign O'er Me" (which is a little too portentious out of context, and that Sandler/Cheadle movie didn't help) went from deep cuts to near-staples on classic rock radio in the Clear Channel era.

i heard the soundtrack before seeing the movie and i thought it was just the shittiest-sounding live album ever, really don't think the audio from a lot of those TV performances hold up when divorced from the visuals.

manic pixie, mercy, yo chick she's so quirky (some dude), Saturday, 8 September 2012 20:44 (eleven years ago) link

^ this is kinda true. old man Pete power sliding into the camera in slo mo is -___-

The way this band decayed and atrophied and the way Pete n Rog are still going as "the who" makes me very, very sad. This band was so important to me growing up and I look back and feel like all the lessons I should have learned from them are how NOT to do things.

Grimy Little Pimp (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 8 September 2012 20:46 (eleven years ago) link

on one level i do have more respect for Zep for knowing it wouldn't be the same after the drummer died and more or less leaving it at that. i have a hard time begrudging The Who for carrying on, if they still wanna play the songs and people still wanna hear 'em (I'd jump at the chance if i could afford a ticket). the last 30 years of touring probably haven't dilluted their legacy as much as two Kenney Jones LPs, tbh.

manic pixie, mercy, yo chick she's so quirky (some dude), Saturday, 8 September 2012 21:14 (eleven years ago) link

A Quick One only number 8 on the albums list? Well I guess I can keep loading up those mixes with "obscurities."

Vic Perry, Saturday, 8 September 2012 21:18 (eleven years ago) link

Everybody who voted for "Silas Stingy" as a bad song actually was thinking of "Sister Disco" and just got confused, please correct THANK YOU.

Vic Perry, Saturday, 8 September 2012 21:20 (eleven years ago) link

Late to this, but the most perplexing thing about the ten worst was how did "Guitar and Pen" miss? (Other than me not being arsed to do any worst songs.)

"Guitar And Pen" didn't even get any votes in the worst poll! (I don't mind the song too much myself; it's endearingly, and uncomfortably, awkward)

But the vast majority of their sub-par/crapulent songs are consolidated on about two and a half albums. Since most people steer clear of those entirely, and thus probably haven't heard, say, "It's Your Turn," those songs didn't place high in the worst results.

Sunn? Sunn? It's your cousin, Marvin O))) (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 8 September 2012 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

the Petra Haden version of "Silas Stingy" on her a cappella cover of Sell Out (which i heartily recommend to any fans of the original album) warmed me up to the track

TKAA sndtrack has moments but the late-Keith live stuff where he sounds old and slow really bum me out.

What's perplexing is that he's far more on his game on the 1977 Kilburn show -- the one which was thought inferior to the later Shepperton show used in the film.

I'm glad people didn't vote for newer Who songs for worst. Where's the fun in voting for an obvious room clearer like In The Ether? I voted Squeeze Box worst too, but now I wish I went with The Real Me. FM radio murdered that song, not that it was any good to begin with.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 8 September 2012 21:31 (eleven years ago) link

The way this band decayed and atrophied and the way Pete n Rog are still going as "the who" makes me very, very sad. This band was so important to me growing up and I look back and feel like all the lessons I should have learned from them are how NOT to do things.

Townshend has repeatedly expressed regret over not stopping the band:

- after the 1997 tour
- after the 1989 tour
- after the 1982 tour
- the morning after the Cincinnati tragedy
- after Keith died
- after the 1976 tour
- after recording Quadrophenia

That said, the 2000 shows were the best since '76, and Endless Wire was their best record since The Who By Numbers. So if they want to keep doing it, good. It's when they didn't want to -- as was the case from 1980-82 -- that they shouldn't have.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 8 September 2012 21:35 (eleven years ago) link

I saw them in '96 or so with the Quadrophenia tours and it was great, and again in the 2000's before Entwistle passed and that was amazing. At least they were touring as The Who and not selling their songs to P. Diddy for that lousy Godzilla movie.

manic pixie, mercy, yo chick she's so quirky (some dude), Saturday, 8 September 2012 21:44 (eleven years ago) link

It probably has to do with approaching a band from the viewpoint of a session musician (which 1/2 of Zep were) vs. a non-session musician. Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones did studio work before and after Zeppelin, whereas The Who was to a greater extent all Pete, Roger, and John have ever done.

I was going to vote in this if I'd had more time to absorb the parts of the discog that I don't know very well, but it didn't happen. (A Quick One is a really solid album though, innit?)

Anyway, re: "Squeeze Box." I remember an interview with Pete Townshend in Hit Parader - prolly from around the time of Face Dances - where he was bashing Paul McCartney's commercialism - but then admitted The Who sold a shitload of t-shirts and "Squeeze Box" was "every bit as bad as Ebony & Ivory." I agree.

Kent Burt, Saturday, 8 September 2012 22:43 (eleven years ago) link

I love those "if you enjoyed this recording, you may also like...." suggested albums on the back cover of the original pressings of The Who Sings My Generation - all put there by some Decca guy plugging whatever their recent releases were by a guy who'd apparently never actually listened to The Who. If you enjoyed "My Generation", may we suggest, the Kingston Trio?

Lee626, Saturday, 8 September 2012 22:46 (eleven years ago) link

"Squeeze Box" is redeemed by the exuberant groove of the fun part, and the expression of true love in the slow pretty "I'm so in love with you" part. I never quite got the metaphor though. "Mama's got a squeeze box she sits in her lap, when daddy comes home he never gets a nap."

For decades it was a foregone conclusion that this was one of the worst shows they ever played. And while it's not entirely inconceivable that, by their standards, the Who thought it sucked, an off night for them is a night other bands would kill for.

Moon's not quite where he was in late '76, but he's far better than he was on the 1978 Shepperton show ("Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" in The Kids Are Alright), and handily surpasses everything he did on Who Are You.

Sunn? Sunn? It's your cousin, Marvin O))) (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 9 September 2012 02:29 (eleven years ago) link

So yeah, I think it's a great show. I think the negative reaction to it had a lot to do with everyone's mental and emotional state at the time; Townshend wasn't sure he wanted to continue, Moon was a wreck and seemed to be holding them back, John and Roger wanted to tour...

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 9 September 2012 02:41 (eleven years ago) link

The 78 show was sloppy but they really made up for it with playing like it was the greatest thing ever in the world. Particularly Townshend, who looks like he is coked out of his mind, but does some great guitar solos. And of course that iconic slide.

Voted My Generation as the #1 album. As a kid, I felt weird for liking it so much. It was not a "rock" album in the way even A Quick One was- much more an oldies/rock 'n' roll record from my early 80s vantage point. It wasn't my favorite then, though. Later I realized that I like rock 'n' roll more than rock, and it's appeal grew. This phase of the band was relatively short compare to Stones and Kinks- just one maximum r'n'b album, and the Meaty Beaty singles. But they were using so much more noise than their contemporaries, right from the start. The Ox is like the hardest bits of Link Wray's singles, strung together. Nowadays, it sounds like something from In The Red records with it's balance of sharp melodies, snark and noise.

The Who Sings My Generation (I had the one packaged in tandem with Magic Bus - The Who On Tour) took a little time to grow on me. I think I had a similar reaction to yours initially, but after getting into the Velvets and the MC5, I went back to My Generation and it suddenly became evident where/how those bands got so many of their ideas. There is no "European Son" without "The Ox."

I had both of the MCA twofers -- Magic Bus/My Gen and Quick One/Sell Out. They sort of muddied the waters as far as getting a sense of the band's story and chronology, but obviously the music was great. Any release with "Bucket T" is worth it...

Euler, Sunday, 9 September 2012 20:38 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, those are the same synth tracks as on Pete's demo. They did that a lot ("Baba O'Riley," "Won't Get Fooled Again," most of Quadrophenia) because Pete's demos were so well-engineered that re-creating them would've been pointless. I think "Relay" is the only one where a new synth track was created for the Who recording.

If the Who hadn't put out Endless Wire, I'd be stuck for late-period songs to champion (but probably would've gone with "Cry If You Want"). But shit, "Mike Post Theme" beats everything on It's Hard, Face Dances, and most of Who Are You.

Oddly, though, it was the one Endless Wire song that wasn't better live than on record.

Live version of "Heaven and Hell" was my favorite for a while on the Leeds album.

"Sparks" is probably one of the first songs i ever learned how to play. I had a tab of the entire Tommy album and would practice playing it to stadium crowds in the living room.

Whoever said they thought "Who Are You" was a new band that wrote a song about their name was otm. I thought that exact thing when i heard this on the radio when i was 5 or something.

Readers followed the charts in various periodicals and, during this time, the BBC used aggregated results of charts from the NME, Melody Maker, Disc and (later) Record Mirror to compile the Pick of the Pops chart.

LROM was on my least-favorite ballot. So overwrought. Daltrey's an unsubtle singer at best, and a bellowing blowhard on things like this. Not that the song does him any favors, lyrics-wise.

There's a great moment in the recent Quad doc where Daltrey's LROM vocals are isolated. It's pretty chilling. Makes you believe the legend about him singing so loud that he once blew up a mic in the studio.

And Romney doesn't know what day it is... (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 10 September 2012 20:47 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't heard all the live versions (just the Vic one on the expanded Who's Next), but isn't the studio version the most complete, with all the lyrics? I remember Dave Marsh quoting the last verse in Before I Get Old, which I looked at long before hearing the studio version and being "like what now?".

Instagrams of Lily on My Facebook Wall (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 10 September 2012 20:52 (eleven years ago) link

I'm 80% sure the Young Vic has all the lyrics, but the Isle of Wight definitely doesn't. Wait, no, Roger forgot a verse at the Young Vic. So yes, you're right, the studio version is the only officially released one with all the lyrics.

Great solo on "Our Love Was"-- very Randy California (and predates Spirit as a recording unit).

Instagrams of Lily on My Facebook Wall (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 10 September 2012 21:18 (eleven years ago) link

My number one is "Our Love Was, Is" (the title on the US that is from what I understand the stereo version with a different guitar solo). Glad to see it finishing this high. "Odorono" was on my ballot too and I have high hopes for lots of the rest of Sell Out to also show as we go.

I would no more take apart Sell Out for individual track plays than I would Another Green World or The Residents Commercial Album, but picking favorite sections ended up a fairly comprehensible task.

From "go to the church of your choice" to Our Love Was, Is, to the jingles leading into I Can See For Miles: insane.

I remember that being the title on the US Sell Out, as well as on Magic Bus - The Who On Tour. Don't know if I've heard that solo, though. The YouTube link above is the mono mix, which has more prominent Daltrey vocals and a pedal steel solo.

<<The YouTube link above is the mono mix>>

Wow, wish I could share it (wonder if my library has the CD, my own is well-worn vinyl)

....it's a very sleek electric solo, and the stereo mix on that song is breathtaking. Great french horn part too.

Vic Perry, Monday, 10 September 2012 22:19 (eleven years ago) link

I had a tough time picking out favorites too. Ultimately i placed "Tattoo" at number one, but I remember "Odorono" being an early favorite and pretty much everything is charming! I don't think too many "Sell Out" tracks were on my top 10, even though it's my favorite record. I agree it's biggest strength is as one undifferentiated experience.

But there are so many great moments! The fuzzy solo on "Our Love Was, Is" is wonderful.

A long time ago i found the complete Radio London jingles collection on slsk. Great listen as well!

Love that.

How he got the song:

So we went to MCA or whoever has it and they said, “Well, we have the master rights and Pete Townshend’s publishing company has the publishing, and it’s a favored-nations deal.” In other words, whatever we negotiated with them, we would then also have to pay Pete and the publishing. So their first offer was, I think, $150,000. [Laughs.] Because it was the whole song! So we’d have to pay $300,000 total. That’s a whole episode for us. That’s the whole budget for the entire episode. But we didn’t give up. That’s the way it worked. And either the company or someone else told Blair, “The other way to work it is to go to Pete Townshend first.” Because it’s the same in the other direction: Whatever deal he makes, they have to honor his deal, too. They have to take whatever offer he gives. They have to match it. But try to go get Pete Townshend on the phone. That’s even harder. So it just took a lot of fuckin’ time. And occasionally, we’d be on the set shooting “Blueberries” or “Moving” or whatever it is, and I say to Blair, “How’s it going with The Who?” and she’d either say, “Dead” or, “I just talked to a guy today” or, “A guy I talked to today is looking into something.” And it went on and on. And finally, she said, “Well, Pete Townshend wants to know exactly how it’s being used, and he wants to see the show. He wants to see some episodes.” So I wrote him a synopsis of how it would be. I described it very carefully, and we sent him the DVD of five episodes from last season. And then, I don’t know, three or four months later, it felt like, he came back to us and said, “Can you send me 7,500 bucks?” [Laughs.] Yeah! And so the whole thing cost $15,000, which is fucking nothing!

Has Pete said anything in any interviews about the radical changes in his guitar soloing in the last 10 years or so? Is he getting lessons or something?

I think his single-string facility really started taking off in 1982. With "Eminence Front" (and Kenney Jones), he was finally able to luxuriate in a backbeat; his solos on that song in '82 were unlike any he'd played previously (and were one of the few highlights of those shows).

More recently, though, he hurt his arm/hand in a bike accident in 1991, and my guess is that he doubled-down on practicing as part of his rehab. That seems to be around when the fast fingerpicking started.

Personally, I thought his psychedelic psoloing in the expanded "Sell Out" (especially "Mountain King") a revelation!

Faster than food (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 17:19 (eleven years ago) link

OK. I mentioned lessons because he's doing more GIT/Berklee style stuff in the post-2000 stuff I've seen, some jazz modal playing and whammybar tricks -- but if anyone in rock music could teach himself that at home alone with a book, guitar, and computer, it'd be Pete.

He's said his all-time favorite guitarist is Pat Martino, so I can see why he'd want to gravitate towards that style of playing. I'm not personally a fan of Martino's, but when that style is filtered through Pete, it gets pretty scary.

what was the timeline of that stuff anyway? i've always been curious how much The Who was building on their contemporaries and how much they were just taking that American R&B and rock'n'roll source material and just totally inventing their approach to it. and it's pretty fascinating how later on, when the big bands seemed fairly competitive and aware of each other, The Who never seemed to really follow anyone's lead -- they seemed to respond to the Beatles' innovations by just going for even more audaciously original ideas.

Great points. I think this is why they were so highly respected by their contemporaries. They weren't blues purists, nor were they psychedelic, but bands in those camps totally envied the Who. The Beatles tried to emulate/beat them with "Helter Skelter"; the Stones put them on the Circus when the Who were at their lowest commercial ebb in the UK -- only to completely upstage the Stones; much of Piper At The Gates Of Dawn would be inconceivable without "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere"; and as Jeff Beck said, "There is no one who ever held a candle to them. Townshend, he’s not a finicky fiddly tiddley guitar player like I was, and like Eric and Jimmy were -we were always a bit fairy arsed about it - he was orchestral and he was this windmill orchestra with a couple of howitzer cannons on the side. They were too good."

what was the timeline of that stuff anyway?

The Who seemed to be first out of the gate -- "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere" was May '65, before any of those other bands had a record out (Small Faces' "What'cha Gonna Do About It" was next, in August).

yeah i'm not debating who was first or best - though the maximum r&b of the pretty things started coming out in 1964 (and the prettys were very influential in the u.k. just as a live band for the punch and heft of their sound early on) and there were other mod con artists recording in 64 as well and the stones and "you really got me" and all that - just saying that there were a lot of contemporary who-like artists. people who stole from the who's sound for sure but everyone stole from everyone. when i think of the who i think of all kinds of bands. but i also understand the feeling that they were alone in their who-ness. the punk loner vibe. love the who vibe. they were nuts.

Actually, Townshend has gone on record a bunch of times saying he stole the "I Can't Explain" riff from "You Really Got Me" (even though it's not the exact same thing, but still, decent of him to cop to it). And he said something about how he, Beck, and Dave Davies will go to their graves never agreeing on who started using feedback first. So yeah, there was definitely a lot of everyone-stealing-from-everyone. (also, the Eddie Philips/Jimmy Page Guitar Bow Battle)

I didn't vote for My Generation cuz yeah I'm sick of it. also every time I hear it I remember the anecdote about how Roger adopted the stuttering delivery as a joke on one of the engineers (who had a stutter) which just seems cruel

stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 15:50 (eleven years ago) link

Fear not!

Another salient aspect of "My Generation" is Daltrey's delivery: an angry and frustrated stutter. Various stories exist as to the reason for this distinct delivery. One is that the song began as a slow "talking" blues number without the stutter (in the 1970s it was sometimes performed as such, but with the stutter, as "My Generation Blues"), but after being inspired by John Lee Hooker's "Stuttering Blues", Townshend reworked the song into its present form. Another reason is that it was suggested to Daltrey that he stutter to sound like a British mod on speed. It is also proposed, albeit less frequently, that the stutter was introduced to give the group a framework for implying an expletive in the lyrics: "Why don't you all fff... fade away!" However, producer Shel Talmy insisted it was simply "one of those happy accidents" that he thought they should keep. Roger Daltrey has also commented that he had not rehearsed the song prior to the recording and he was unable to hear his own voice through the monitors. The stutter came about as he tried to fit the lyrics to the music as best he could, and the band decided it worked well enough to keep. The BBC initially refused to play "My Generation" because it did not want to offend people who stutter, but it reversed its decision after the song became more popular.

Townshend in 1987:

It's the dumbest song I've ever written. ...

It was dumb to deny the political role of the individual, the political responsibility of the individual. Burning your draft card is a political act. Throwing your vote away is an apolitical act. And "Won't Get Fooled Again" was an apolitical song. Luckily, most people didn't listen to the verses. ["There's nothing in the street/Looks any different to me/And the slogans are all replaced, by the by. . . . "] They just listened to the catch.

It was an irresponsible song. It was quite clear during that period that rock musicians had the ear of the people. And people were saying to me then, "Pete, you've got to use the Who. You've got to get this message across." It was like Abbie Hoffman said on the stage of Woodstock that John Sinclair was in jail for one lousy joint, and I kicked him off the stage. I deeply regret that. If I was given the opportunity again, I would stop the show. Because I don't think rock & roll is that important. Then I did. The show had to go on.

What made me stop thinking the show had to go on was obviously Cincinnati. It was a terrible lesson to have to learn. For a long time, I couldn't live with that. It was directly responsible for me literally, emotionally falling apart. But it was a valuable lesson for me today, looking back on the political relevance - or irrelevance - of a song like "Won't Get Fooled Again." I greatly regret that it's one of the most powerful songs that I've ever written. The Labour party asked me if they could use it in their election campaign. And I said, "Yeah, but please let me rewrite the verses."

I've never read a word of Pete writing or interviews, although I always knew he was an editor at Faber & Faber or someplace tony like that. What's a good place to start reading his words?

This is as good a place to start as any. In it, he sows the seeds of what would become Lifehouse/Who's Next.

You know how in that Circus performance, where Pete hits the chords leading to the "'cello, 'cello" section and the crowd sort of spontaneously goes nuts? From there to the end is everything good and right about rock music.

The R&R Circus version just SLAYS. I heard that long before the studio version, and it was a big letdown.

Listening back to the studio one last night on headphones, i liked it alot! Except the ending, i think the vocals are a bit out of tune on all the post-Ivor stuff. And the "Dang! Dang!" should be much more powerful.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:29 (eleven years ago) link

probably no relation but 'bohemian rhapsody' has always seemed to me to be built on the quick one template - harmony opening to relatively sentimental first section, second section both sinister and goofy, third section ROCKS. enjoy both, prefer quick one - tbh those chords leading into the 'cellocellocello' part alone would've guaranteed it a spot on my ballot.

Too many wonderful moments to mention, but the bit where Keith chucks his floortom over his head, where he's singing along unmiked, Pete's "can't believe that I'm with you a-GAIN!", and dangdang and cellocello

no I had a book as a kid that was called something like "The Stories Behind 100 Pop Hits" or something and it specifically told the story of how the stuttering take was a goof, something Daltrey sang to make fun of the engineer/studio assistant since there was some technical issue with Daltrey's playback, and then how the band was surprised when that was the take that actually ended up on the pressing. of course, this was in the days before the internet, so its entirely possible this was just some unsubstantiated rumor/hearsay that the author was drawing on. nevertheless, it's what I think of when I hear the tune.

and here I predicted confidently a couple of days ago that "Going Mobile" would have to post, given that "Love Ain't For Keeping" and "My Wife" (which never got FM radio play that I heard) did! Well the low placement of a lot of the songs that were inescapable on classic rock stations through the following decades surprised me (and pleased me, yeah).

As for my TRIUMPHANT! and "couldn't face another show, no" moments, see my ballot below:

songs

1 Our Love Was, Is (#21)
2 I Can’t Explain (#6)

was "Going Mobile" ever especially well regarded? i feel like i heard it on the radio more than almost any other Who song in the '90s but it's kinda disappeared since then and i don't miss it one bit.

tylerw, the creatorw (some dude), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:50 (eleven years ago) link

I don't miss it either, but Dave Marsh liked it and back when I was 15 it, like nearly all the rest of Who's Next, seemed awesome to me.

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:53 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! I really dug doing this poll; always love to read folks' views on the 'Oo.

As for "We're Not Gonna Take It"/"See Me, Feel Me," the former got more votes, but obviously neither had enough for the top 50. Also, clemenza, each "Circles" only got one vote; if I'd combined them, it still wouldn't have made the final results.

And Romney doesn't know what day it is... (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:55 (eleven years ago) link

"Goin Mobile" I mostly appreciate for the envelope-filter solo. (gtr nerd)

Nice poll, Tarfumes! (Didn't submit a ballot myself as usual but whatever)

i love Who's Next as a whole but when ballot time came i could only find room for 3 of the most popular tunes off of it (although my ballot was pretty chronologically spread out, no more than 3 songs off any one album)

Kinda wish I'd voted up some more Quadrophenia in retrospect -- now that I've hung out with it for a while I feel less like it's a pure album-album -- there's a lot of corking tracks on there

Thanks--I guess "Circles" isn't as well known as I thought it was. As you can deduce from my ballot, "Substitue"/"Circles" would probably be my pick for greatest two-sided single ever...one of three or four, anyway. (Don't think there's been a ballot without "Substitute" yet.)

clemenza, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 22:01 (eleven years ago) link

I'll have to hear Circles, Clemenza... hooray, another vote for "Don't Look Away"!

Now, who else voted for "I Need You" or "Whiskey Man"...? And how did "We're Not Gonna Take It" (which on the album is basically three songs together) not make the top 50?

That's the original B-side "Circles," which is similar to, but even better than, "Instant Party." I was also surprised "We're Not Gonna Take It" didn't sneak in--for me, it's the one song that leaves Tommy's overreach behind.

I considered it but decided to vote for only one song with the "see me, feel me" chorus and that one lost out

Someone needs to compile a best-of of the non-album, non-a-side tracks from the 60's. "Dogs" is wonderful, and "Little Billy" is great too. Last night I just heard "Dr. Jeckyll/Mr Hyde" for the first time, and it kicks arse as well...

great poll though, i should revisit the debut

Euler, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 23:33 (eleven years ago) link

Any recommendations on Ox's solo stuff? I was thinking about dipping a toe in.

YES! Smash Your Head Against The Wall is brilliant; there's a fascinating take on "Heaven And Hell," some heaviness that gives Sabbath a run for its money ("My Size"), and the most beautiful songs he'd ever write ("What Are We Doing Here?" "Ted End," "I Believe In Everything").

The two or three songs I've heard from the rest of his solo albums didn't make me want to hear any more of them, though (except for Whistle Rymes, which is supposed to be decent).

And Romney doesn't know what day it is... (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 23:37 (eleven years ago) link

I wanted to put Acid Queen in, really I did, but there was too much competition

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 23:38 (eleven years ago) link

i missed out on this poll but i would've voted for 'we're not gonna take it' -- there's something so weirdly moving about it, the way it transitions back and forth between the intimacy of 'see me, feel me' and the interaction with the crowd. one of the few moments on the album where the whole concept really works for me. oh and needless to say i much prefer it to that other fuckin' worthless song of the same title.

I also had to miss several great songs from Who By Numbers from my ballot, like Booze and Waist

yeah, smash your head is essential, but all of his solo albums have a couple of cool tracks. and you need this album for primo disco ox.

Oh and this tickled me pink, from Pete's Meaty Beaty RS review that Myonga kindly (awesomely) linked to upthread

The only non-Townshend track on the album is also a non-single. Politics or my own shaky vanity might be the reason, but "Boris the Spider" was never released as a single and could have been a hit. It was the most-requested song we ever played on stage, and if this really means anything to you guitar players, it was Hendrix' favorite Who song. Which rubbed me up well the wrong way, I can tell you. John introduced us to "Boris" in much the same way as I introduced us to our "Generation"; through a tape recorder. We assembled in John's three by ten-foot bedroom and listened incredulously as the strange and haunting chords emerged. Laced with words about the slightly gruesome death of a spider, the song had enough charm to send me back to my pad writing hits furiously. It was a winner, as Harry would say. It still is, for the life of me I don't know why we still don't play it, and the other Entwistle masterpiece, "Heaven and Hell," on the stage anymore. There is no piece for the wicked, John's writing is wicked, his piece here is "Boris."

Fortunately, "Boris" would return to their live shows in 1975, and didn't leave until John did.

It's pretty weird, definitely. I found out at work, from a Who e-mail list. I didn't have any Who CDs for the drive home, and the extent of the tribute on the "classic rock" station was a single airing of "Behind Blue Eyes." When I turned off the radio, an incredibly loud and violent thunderstorm started. It couldn't have been more perfect.

xpost to VegemiteGrrl, i went outside to take pics of the pinball machine yesterday and realized it's completely missing the top screen (the plastic with Tommy in white t & Ann Margret look-alike been torn off) so the only thing left are the numbers. Still has the game board and the Wizard designs on the sides. Must have come out way before the movie, I thought it was just a wizard-themed machine.

curious what who ppl still hear on the radio - i hear 'baba o'riley', 'won't get fooled again', 'who are you', and 'behind blue eyes' frequently, 'bargain', 'i can see for miles', 'my generation', and 'pinball wizard' somewhat less frequently but not rarely, 'squeeze box', 'long live rock', and 'love reign o'er me' on occasion. anything else is a fluke.

balls, Thursday, 13 September 2012 00:14 (eleven years ago) link

There doesn't appear to be a "classic rock" station where I am now. But in the town I lived previous, I heard "Behind Blue Eyes," "Baba O'Riley," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Bargain," "You Better You Bet," "Eminence Front," "Long Live Rock," "Who Are You," "Squeeze Box," "Pinball Wizard," "Magic Bus," and maybe "Love Reign O'er Me." I didn't hear any other Who songs on that station for ten years.

We were quite lucky in Houston. We got a whole evening of Who requests, including a load of deep stuff, and the night was capped by a midnite "Classic Disc" airing of the then-new two-disc Ultimate Collection in its entirety.

The closest treatment I can remember was when George Harrison died (just like 7-8 months prior), and that whole weekend was packed with "Beatles A-Z" plus some syndicated stuff like an audio doc on the solo years and his appearance on "Rockline".

I heard "I Can See for Miles" about a year ago on our "oldies" station -- technically it's not oldies anymore, something like "good time hits." They had a British Invasion Weekend a few weeks ago so I assume they played a few Who songs, but I only listen to that station when I'm in the truck and there's no news on NPR.

fwiw "Pinball Wizard" is the 13th most played from the entire 1960s -- classic rock radio is VERY '70s-centric now, not just with regards to The Who

"Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" get played constantly here--no explanation for why I'm sick of the second but not the first. (If anything, being much shorter, it gets played even more often.) What else...maybe 15 other songs. Mostly stuff from the two doubles and Who's Next, but a few earlier songs, too--"My Generation," "I Can't Explain," "Happy Jack," a couple others. Zero after "Who Are You"; pretty sure I've never heard "Eminence Front" ever (on the radio, and period). For number of different songs on the classic-rock station, they may even be fourth after the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the Rolling Stones. Pink Floyd gets played more often, but a smaller group of songs.

So, nobody voted for "Man with the Money." I know it's a cover, but it's this brilliant thing that the Everly Brothers wrote and had out as a 1965 b-side and album track. There's something moving about how the Who feel like just the right band to do it and they absolutely nail it.

One Ox curiosity that's worth mentioning is the Tipton, Entwistle, & Powell album (Glenn Tipton, Entwistle, and Cozy Powell). The songs aren't all that great (wish Entwistle was writing/singing instead), but it's great to hear Entwistle playing something that isn't The Who. Monsterous sound he gets.

I always liked this review: http://www.headheritage.co.uk/unsung/thebookofseth/the-who-join-together-baby-dont-you-do-it

“Baby Don’t You Do It” was first born in 1964 as a pleading ballad by Marvin Gaye and quickly thereafter became one of The Who’s earliest covers. Giving it seven years of rough handling in the studio and on the road, it mutated into an apocalyptic beast of heavy Rock. Their live rendition doesn’t sound remotely Tamla nor Motown: it sounds like “Live At Leeds” and the songwriting credits should’ve read Holland-Iommi-Holland instead. It’s a raging soul plea shot with a Benzedrine dart to its heart. It’s a flippin’ template for their forthcoming “The Real Me.” It’s heavy, it fucking moves and it’s got it all: Townshend’s SG guitar power chords roar through dominant HIWATT loudspeakers; pretzel-shaped bomb-bass-tic Entwistlian 4-string runs are tautly performed with the greatest of ease; Daltrey’s throat-tearing vox and the outbreak of Mooning drum frenzy that continues unabated throughout. There are several sections where Townshend’s guitar cuts out and stays that way to leave Moon’s unaccompanied ferocious riding of cymbals and rapid double bass drumming to briefly hiccough then regain their lunatic balance on its rhythmic tightrope. After ending the song with several synchronised band crescendos, Daltrey places the microphone gingerly on the stage floor and instead of clinking it sounds like an explosive-filled projectile going off. Luckily, he didn’t sneeze into it or the walls of the venue would’ve probably collapsed or at very least: rendered them structurally unsound.

I just won a "Live at Leeds" LP with all the inserts on e-bay.

I never saw the Who, but I have this story: When I was 13, my dad took a friend and me to see U2 on the War tour, which was my first real rock 'n' roll show. I was of course completely blown away by it, being 13, and as we walked back across the parking lot to the car my friend and I were going on excitedly about it. Of course, eventually I had to ask my dad, "Did you like it?" He sort of shrugged and said, "Yeah, they were good. But you should've seen the Who in 1968..."

What a trump card.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 13 September 2012 18:06 (eleven years ago) link

I keep thinking of this anecdote told to me by someone who saw the Who at the Marquee in 1968. He said that the audience was packed right up against the stage, which was maybe a foot off the ground. As was normal for the space/times, guitars went through unmiked amps, only the vocals went through the PA, and the drums were unmiked. They were incredibly loud and powerful, as you'd expect. But as soon as they tore into the midsection of "Shakin' All Over," when Keith started his double-bass rolls, the entire audience took a sudden and fearful step back, exchanging glances like "the fuck is going on?!" The guy who told me this said it felt like Keith was stomping on his chest.

Moon bio is a wealth of info, and you'll feel like you're drunk when you finish it. Supposedly it's been updated since '99.

A local bar tried the same tactic years ago, only they normally played alt/punk/metal and after closing time they started playing Frank Sinatra, figuring that would clear the place quickly. But to their dismay, they found lots of their patrons liked Sinatra and stayed to listen. It nonetheless became a tradition there for a couple of years.

Something VegemiteGrrl inquired about above: Townshend's 1971 review of Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy for Rolling Stone. I found it on the Rolling Stone site--they don't identify it as such, but it is--then when I went back, it was behind a paywall. So I went icongnito and put it on a Google Doc:

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 2 May 2021 17:28 (three years ago) link

I think Pete and Dave are genuinely friends, but Dave never let that get in the way of, say, calling out some of Pete's bullshit politics. In early 2002, Townshend posted the following on his website:

"Dave Marsh took me to task in Before I Get Old - his book about the Who - for doing a commercial in 1967 for the U.S. Aerospace Programme during the Vietnam War. Maybe I was naïve. But recent events make me wonder who was right or wrong. ... I am grateful for American military might."

I sent a link to that post to Dave, who wrote a column about it (and I can't for the life of me remember the site...it wasn't Addicted to Noise), pointing out the numerous problems with Pete's "reasoning." It ultimately led to Pete removing the message board and many blog posts from his site. So yeah, there's been some bumps in the road, but they're still friends.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 2 May 2021 18:16 (three years ago) link

The ad in question:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1VR-QnIw3Y

Marsh wrote in his column:

As my colleague John Swenson said when he read my book, "If I'd heard that spot in 1967, I'd never have become a fan of the Who." The teenage boys who loved the Who took such things personally in 1967. Not only because we didn't want to get drafted, but because we didn't want to kill. It was way different for Townshend, who did not live in a country with military conscription and whose father had been part of the heroic Royal Air Force (albeit in the band) in World War II. Still, my wife was involved with anti-Vietnam demonstrations at the London School of Economics in '67, so the atrocities of Vietnam weren't unknown in Pete's neighborhood.

In Before I Get Old, Marsh wrote that Townshend was "mortified" that he'd ever done such a thing, and how it was fortunate that the ads weren't widely aired.
