LOOK no one said I had to choose a favourite Kate Bush album, okay? No one said I HAD TO CHOOSE. No one said that.

I'm going to get a spot of work done before starting tracks, but meantime: what should I do about youtube links? I want to link, but don't want to clog the thread up. I put youtu.be instead of youtube.com, is that right? Do I need to linkify it too?

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 August 2012 13:51 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks for leading off with a Bimble quote. I'm glad he's with us in spirit.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 27 August 2012 13:54 (eleven years ago) link

Ismael, if you click the "share" button underneath any YouTube video, it will spit out a link that won't automatically bring the video into the thread.

Clarke B., Monday, 27 August 2012 13:59 (eleven years ago) link

Okay I've got one that ends _gdata_player, do I just paste that in and ilx does the rest?

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 August 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

Hmm, that I'm not sure; my techie skills are pretty sad. It seems the link they spit out with "share" is indeed just the regular link with the youtu.be substitution you mention above, now that I'm looking at it.

Clarke B., Monday, 27 August 2012 14:11 (eleven years ago) link

I'll play safe then rather than relying on cleverness. I'm doing this from my phone too, which adds another layer of things-to-go-wrong.

I expected the #1 and #2 spots to be a race between Hounds of Love and the Dreaming, but wasn't expecting Aerial to trounce Never for Ever so handily in the contest for #3!

I found a Sky of Honey's tracks even more problematic than the Ninth Wave's, as they are even more of a piece. Wonder if they might not suffer a bit as they end up being randomly chosen as placeholders for the entire album side.

Re. the albums, I tried really hard to reacquaint myself w the first three records. There may come a time that I love them -- the ballads, the theatricality of it all. But short of a few songs on Never For Ever, even with the re-listening these last few weeks, this isn't that time.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 27 August 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

I've never gotten past the video for "Love and Anger," which was my introduction to Kate Bush. On another thread, I wrote this about TSW:

I'm still trying to get a grip on the whole thing, but the record opens very strong. On the whole, it still sounds a bit...overstuffed -- the video for "Love and Anger" indicated as much, featuring very LUSH optics, sparkly confetti and Dave Gilmour, who himself looks overstuffed.

I hardly know what to think about 50, I can hardly get a handle on it now. It's like it's drifting away from me, or I'm viewing it through frosted glass. Only Wild Man, Wheeler St and the title track carry any sort of weight for me beyond the odd snippet.

Neither of the above are the 50 Words track I voted for, but I'm glad to see them. Sort of surprised "Witch" is so low, I think of that as a pretty iconic track. (But that could be because I first heard it on a mixtape my college girlfriend made me when we were first going out.)

I had a hard time voting for many pieces of "The Ninth Wave." They work so well together as a whole that saying one part or another was superior ended up meaning I only voted for one.

Gah, I didn't vote. Still, as I said, I would've been pretty much canon, so I'll use these results for some deep-digging hints.

Xpost - Oh England was the last track to drop off my list and if I did a top 20 next week it would probably be top 5. It's beautiful and unique, but the problem is that so is most of Kate Bush's oeuvre. Something has got to give, I am afraid.

Guilty_Boksen, Monday, 27 August 2012 18:51 (eleven years ago) link

i voted for one representative track from "9th Wave" and "Sky of Honey" cos i cdn't separate them properly, sensibly. for each i chose my (probably) fave bit. simple question of all the other songs i needed to vote for, as is not voting "My Lionheart". there are almost no Kate tracks i dislike, but man 20 votes is not a lot.

I like how it has a bit of the Fairlight feel to it in the intro. And was it Marcello who wrote that great piece about how you've been waiting for Kate to come back for a dozen years and then when she finally does, you get this mysterious intro followed by a totally SKANK reggae guitar? I can't remember.

Awww, I'd hoped "Waking The Witch" would place much higher - I have no idea which parts of The Ninth Wave will get singled out. i had "somewhere in between" on my ballot for ages. think i cropped it at the last minute in favour of "there goes a tenner".

my ballot was quite NFE heavy, but i couldn't find space for "the infant kiss" as much as i dig it.

charlie h, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 06:20 (eleven years ago) link

I voted for KotM. I'll admit it doesn't have the depth of some other songs on disc 1 of Aerial. But (as the rest of my ballot will show) I much prefer K8 in that more simple, tell-the-whole-story-in-4-minutes mode. e.g. I don't care for The Ninth Wave at all; leave the Pink Floydisms to Pink Floyd.

My other placer so far is 'The Infant Kiss'.

I voted for Wheeler Street. I don't think I'm giving too much away if I say it was just me

Love the orchestral fretless interlude in this. As Savetherobot used to impress upon me when we were kids, Eberhard Weber is the secret weapon on The Dreaming and super important to the sound of this record.

i love "there goes a tenner" though i'm not sure it quite made my ballot

a while back i realised that nicki minaj's english accent is performed in pretty much the same way as kate bush's cockney accent - like on surface it's a terrible terrible approximation of an "authentic" accent but these women know wtf they're doing and they are fucking with us because they can and it's fun, basically

"Houdini" was super high on my list. Kind of a perfect example of why "The Dreaming" is so great : Fairlight textures blending seamlessly with organic instruments (including Weber's lovely melancholy basslines) and KB putting her voice into the service of several personalities/mindstates. Outstanding and still awes me to this day, almost 20 something years after first hearing it.

"sunset" and "pull out the pin", two more of my votes. the latter really is one of those songs you feel ONLY kate could pull off - she skirts parody so much, with the vocal treatment and the odd orientalisms and so on, but she takes it so seriously and executes the concept with such focus that you're right there with her.

"sunset" is absolutely gorgeous, it's where aerial starts to become really transcendent - a sky of honey is such an incredible achievement. her use of language on that disc is so satisfying, the way the words and rhymes slot together.

"the big sky" is about the only kate song i'll hate on. it's always, always felt pointless coming after "running up that hill" and "hounds of love" to me.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 12:39 (eleven years ago) link

i like it well enough but it does feel a bit fluffy and inconsequential, surprised at its placing this high, it's definitely no "Mother Stands for Comfort" if we must place every HoL track

just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 12:41 (eleven years ago) link

I basically agree with that. 'Sustained euphoria' is not something I can really get with in pop, with the possible exception of rave.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 12:43 (eleven years ago) link

nb "fluffy and inconsequential" aren't really critiques but maybe this wd work better as an endless looping dance track than a fully formed Kate song

A few thoughts:

And Dream of Sheep -- the song where Tori Amos was born, for better or worse, and historically my favorite from "The Ninth Wave." I read recently that Rolling Stone, in its HoL review in 1986, suggested that Barry Manilow could have quite the hit with it!

Experiment IV -- I absolutely love this, from the rocket snare to even what she does with the overtly *rock* guitar rhythms. But more than anything, there's something striking and mysterious about a woman with such a luxurious voice singing about secret military experiments. And the end with the helicopter is positively terrifying.

I was one of the #1 votes for "Nocturn" - everything I'd loved about Kate Bush ~The Ninth Wave with added balearic majesty; I think it was Tim in the OG Aerial thread that mentioned Talk Talk/Bark Psychosis/"Halcyon+On+On"/"Under The Sun" as reference points. aye. from NME: "It was written for John Hughes' film She's Having A Baby. Really light comedy about this young guy who gets married, very much a kid. His wife is pregnant and it's alright until they get to the hospital and the baby's in the breach position.
That's the sequence I have to write the songs about and it's really very moving, him in the waiting room, having flashbacks of his wife and him going for walks, decoration... It's exploring his sadness and guilt, suddenly it's the point where he has to grow up. He'd been such a wally up to this point."

still blows my mind!

This and the Bowie poll are the only ones I've voted in; two pop stars I grew up with (and KB was/is a star in the UK - that's the thing that perhaps isn't all that apparent to North American fans who discovered her by different means - she was Saturday morning kids' telly AND critical darling). No, thanks to all of you - especially the early voters, it really took the pressure off

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:26 (eleven years ago) link

Some stats to emphasise just how close it was:

  • the winning margin was ten points. That was actually relatively wide. As voting progressed, one or other opened up a larger gap on only eight of the last thirty-one rounds;
  • at no stage did any track enjoy a forty point lead (i.e. a whole ballot's worth);
  • these two traded the overall lead six times;
  • they were tied after 32 of the 36 ballots;
  • when I went to bed on the last evening, leaving voting open 'til morning, Cloudbusting led by two;
  • had I been strict about closing voting at midnight, Running Up That Hill would've won it when balls' ballot came in with three minutes to spare;
  • every single one of the 36 ballots could've been tweaked individually to give Cloudbusting the win.

I just know that something good is gonna happen. Amazing poll/images! I'm fairly happy with my ballot, considering I threw it together in a panic (hopefully my vote for "Rubberband Man" instead of "Rubberband Girl" was counted, too much T.I. on the brain). I'm curious as to where "Under The Ice" and "The Morning Fog" placed, as I've been surprised by where the other The Ninth Wave tracks ended up ("Waking The Witch" was my #2, and I hadn't realised "And Dream Of Sheep"/"Jig Of Life" were so widely-loved).

"Aerial Tal" was robbed, and I thought ILM loved animal noises :(

Anyway, my top 3 are among of my favourite songs by any artist and any of them could have been #1 on a particular day. Looks like three of my picks had no other voters, of which I'm only really surprised by "Kashka From Baghdad" which is my favourite track by far off Lionheart.

Hounds of Love
Suspended in Gaffa
This Woman's Work
Breathing
Jig of Life
Pi
Running Up That Hill
Cloudbusting
Pull Out the Pin
Wuthering Heights
December Will Be Magic Again
Sunset
Wild Man
Get Out of My House
Aerial Tal
Army Dreamers
Houdini
Kashka from Baghdad
The Coral Room

Threw this together at the last minute without much of a chance to listen to anything again, so it probably leans a little heavily on Hounds of Love, but there are worse fates.

In addition to the point above that it being #5 is a bit of a LOL, I did want to return to a point I made in the noms thread. While I respect folks who prefer the first version they heard of this, and myself generally can't be bothered with remakes no matter how "technically" or even "musically" superior they are, in the case of the 1986 New Vocal version, it's not even close.

On the original, the way she phrases "It's me/Cathy, I've come home" leaves her running out of breath by the time she reaches "I'm" (it's already an odd phrasing, putting the "I'm" in the line with "home" instead of "So cold" but the clipped way she sings it makes it even odder). But on the remake, her superior breath control allows her to extend the "ee's" of "me" and "Cathy" so that she can go straight into a hugely powerful "Co-o-o-ollld." That in turn allows her to use the line "Let me in-a-your window" as the climax of the chorus instead of the kind of tag it serves as in the original.

Not altogether unlike Sinatra ca. the Capitol recordings, the skill of her singing by this time was at its absolute peak. And on this, it allows her to fundamentally transform not just the feel of one of her best-known songs into something even more powerful and natural -- but the melody itself. It's amazing.

Yeah, but a) the original sounds like a crazy person singing alien music whereas in '86 it just sounds like Kate Bush, b) there's a MIDIVerb or something on the '86 version that makes it sound as if she's singing in a bathroom instead of on a wild and windy moor, c) one needs to hear how untamed her voice was on those early singles to really appreciate the subsequent "soft focus" approach to her singing on "Lionheart" moving into the high drama of "Never For Ever".

I'm 100% in favour of remixing and revising and think more people should do it. Even when it creates crap, which it does, like 90% of the time, having a polished-up crap version only sharpens the ingenuity of the original

(Not calling '86 "Kick Inside" vocal takes crap, mind)

Lionheart is worth picking up for a few choice songs (Kashka, coffee homeground, the title track).

I like the love you showed for Aerial, but I don't think I will ever understand the gushing that the Dreaming receives. It's a weird dynamic; most casual fans don't rate it at all, but of the more serious fans that do rate it, the overwhelming majority seem to overrate the ever-loving hell out of it. It's a pretty good album, but considering the next two records she released after it, it's very mediocre in comparison.

Trying to imagine a world in which The Dreaming sounds mediocre compared to The Sensual World.

It's not a terribly sensual one, to be honest.

Given how much of a favourite it is of Kate's, having been picked for the live shows, it's surprising how badly Lily did.

i won't hear any sensual world slander, idk how anyone can not get immediately enveloped in it, the way its textures sprout up & spread out like a landscape in the fog

I think The Sensual World is great but The Dreaming is monumental.
