sure thing, i am happy to add whatever people want BUT keep in mind ballots will be coming in so be timely or people might not see your addition before they vote

did anybody submit some nominations that were a scramble of greek letters? i think they got scrambled into nonsense when i imported the text into the spreadsheet

the late great, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

i added 'sequencer' by lifelike and 'man or mistress' by levon vincent to the spreadsheet plus a couple of others but they seem to have gone. not too bothered about the others but could you add those 2 please? partic the lifelike as i'll be placing it p high.

one thing that could possibly be helpful - if anybody sees anything split into two or more artist names (for example saint etienne vs st. etienne) let me know and i'll try to reconcile or cross-reference to make it easier for people to search

did anybody submit some nominations that were a scramble of greek letters? i think they got scrambled into nonsense when i imported the text into the spreadsheet

Yeah, I nommed a Greek house tune by Αλλού, it's a collab between Savvas Ysatis and some other guy, and it's really dope (basically these half-spoken, half sung, kinda sleazy sounding vocals on top of deep and minimalist house beat). I used the Greeks letter because I don't how to translitterate them, the record sleeve has only Greek text. Here's Discogs link to the album, the track is called Όνειρα. Maybe someone here knows how to write it in Western alphabet?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 21:25 (eleven years ago) link

i'll just call it that on the spreadsheet - like i said it got scrambled in the import and i didn't have time to try to find it in the thread, but i can put it in now ...

Allou - Oneira

means dreams i'm guessing

like Joe Pasquale and Gandhi (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 21:36 (eleven years ago) link

based on what i know about the greek language (which is basically exclusively from formulas) looks like ... allou - oneira (?)

which i guess probably translates to something like "dreams", no idea what "allou" means

the late great, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 21:36 (eleven years ago) link

hah xpost

Lamp, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:57 (eleven years ago) link

I'm just kidding, don't worry about it. Suppose I feel a little self conscious considering how much my taste has changed.

I tried to vote for what I actually liked and played out over the last 5 to 7 years over what I'm listening to now.

pattern loader, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:58 (eleven years ago) link

pattern loader, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 04:00 (eleven years ago) link

v there's a 'sound stream' and 'soundstream' on the spreadsheet, also for the latter the track '"live" goes on' is listed twice (but one without the quotation marks).

2) any of these are terrible gay homo awful NON-house music and should be removed from ballet for indie-friendliness

― the late great

House music is very rooted in gay culture so I don't think starting the poll by using homo and gay as derogatory terms is adequate.

Moka, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 19:54 (eleven years ago) link

Error in:

boy 8 - bit

It should read: Boy 8 Bit - Suspense is Killing Me

Moka, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

as a derogatory gay i find 'gay culture' more derogatory than any joke the lovely late great makes. i didn't realize we could flag tracks from the poll, i was just talking about the spotify playlist linked to above, which is mostly great.

just to make things clear

"terrible gay homo awful house music"

awful gay, political deep house music.

the late great, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 20:35 (eleven years ago) link

The meme actually came from Chaki's putdown of house music in some unrelated post.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

ah yes

passion (sometimes misinterpreted as crankiness) is what makes life worth living. without it you are a sting fan with milquetoast posting style or end up listening to gay, awful, horrible, house music all the time.

Not a bad choice! The tracks are kinda samey (except for two that have a more electro/hip hop flavour), but the vibe is rather unique, and if you like that vibe, the album's consistently good.

Well, there's plenty of other stuff on the list that's not danceable: Deepchord, Voices from the Lake, Fever Ray, The Fires of Ork, Panda Bear, Pole, etc. So if you want to remove Barbara Panther, you should remove all those others too.

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 May 2012 21:41 (eleven years ago) link

Why? They aren't any more danceable than the Barbara Morgenstern tracks I nominated.

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:05 (eleven years ago) link

why? common sense, that's why.

now use those down votes sparingly tuomas, i'm going to weigh any other requests you have very carefully, four down votes is a hell of a lot more than i intend to give anyone else, so consider yourself lucky.

the late great, Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:07 (eleven years ago) link

What "common sense"? What does that even mean?

the late great, Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:11 (eleven years ago) link

FWIW, I'm not for removing anything from the list; I don't really like the idea that this poll should correspond to a specific aesthetic of electronic music that's defined by the bobbins crew, and that stuff that's outside this aesthetic gets removed, even though people had nominated those tunes.

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:14 (eleven years ago) link

well, that's going to happen anyway based on the voting, isn't it?

anyway, if you don't like it, don't vote, feel free to organize a boycott, etc

or come up w/ a better argument than finger-pointing for why an artist pitchfork described as one of the leading exponents of the "synthification of indie pop" should be included in the poll

tell you what tuomas, on the off-chance that i'm being unfair to you (because your faux-naif posting style irritates me) i'm going to add morgenstern back to the list

BUT i'm NOT going to add the ones you x'd out back to the list ... don't know how you do it in finland, but in america we hardmen choose our words carefully.

or come up w/ a better argument than finger-pointing for why an artist pitchfork described as one of the leading exponents of the "synthification of indie pop" should be included in the poll

Because, like I already said in the nomination thread, the track I nominated is purely electronic with no singing or "real" instruments. Yeah, I know B. Morgenstern also has tunes that are more pop than electronic music, but I wasn't gonna vote for those.

(xx-post)

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

rip panda bear

I only listened to this track for the first time while going through the nominations list, and I have to say I'm completely baffled why someone would nominate it in an electronic music poll. It sounds like bad imitation of psychedelic-era Beatles or something.

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:36 (eleven years ago) link

I mean, if someone considers it electronic music, that's fine by me, but I just don't get it...

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:38 (eleven years ago) link

how about this

from now on, if anybody wants anything deleted, post a youtube link and i'll be the judge

for example ...

in america, there's a show called sesame street, which sometimes asks children to play a game called "One of These Things Is Not Like The Other"

why don't you play and tell me which one of these things *doesn't* have a 4x4 dance beat

i'm sorry if you think i'm being mean, tuomas, but when you play dumb i'm gripped by an urge to treat you as if you actually were dumb

the late great, Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:47 (eleven years ago) link

i am actually sorry, though, i know i'm being trollish and grouchy

the late great, Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:49 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I know those tracks have a 4/4 beat. So do many tracks by Pole or Barbara Morgenstern or Monolake, but I still don't see Deepchord or Voices from the Lake as any more dance music than the aforementioned three. They all use just the form of dance music, as a lot electronic producers who do "head" music have done before. I just can't imagine people dancing to Deepchord at a club, but maybe that's just me?

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:55 (eleven years ago) link

Anyway, my actual point was that the line between dancey and non-dancey electronic music is sometimes so thin that to me it seems like futile exercise to try to disqualify certain tunes because they're not "danceable" enough. I can understand leaving out stuff that's clearly more in the pop song than dance track mold, or things that seem to be in another genre altogether (like that Panda Bear song), but I can't really see any qualitative difference between artists like, say, Deepchord and Pole that would rule out the latter.

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 May 2012 23:07 (eleven years ago) link

Those echospace tracks are definitely danceable - have you never been to a night playing dub techno? The voices from the lake tracks would sit in a Dozzy set (obviously!)

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 May 2012 23:28 (eleven years ago) link

I think my big problem with the Morgenstern track is that the tempo is all wrong. It's about 90 bpm, most dance floor music is 115-135bpm. Yes, you can dance, but you can't Dance.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 10 May 2012 23:39 (eleven years ago) link

Pole is about 110 bpm, but the bass is half speed, so the feel is way off. I've heard Pole playing live in Room1 in Fabric on a Saturday night. It was great, but there was very little dancing.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 10 May 2012 23:43 (eleven years ago) link

Listening to those Echospace tracks directly after the Pole track and they now sound like nuclear techno.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 10 May 2012 23:45 (eleven years ago) link

The mistake is trying to find a single line where "electronic dance" stops and starts.

There isn't one.

Think of it more like a venn diagram with about 6 overlapping circles. At some point particular selections are just within too few of those circles to seem like a good fit.

Morgenstern is clearly within a more indie-pop/post-IDM tradition than is Echochord / Voices From The Lake. This means that she's at a bit of a disadvantage even when operating in the same tempo etc.

That said from memory her remix of Ellen Allien's "Stadtkind" was a pearler. So I'd be reluctant to rule her out except on a track by track basis.

so i am uploading my top 50 tracks to special software where i will compare two tracks side-by-side, tournament style, and then it'll spit out a ranking

the late great, Friday, 11 May 2012 01:35 (eleven years ago) link

tournament style isn't actually the right way to put it, it actually uses a sorting algorithm (quicksort)

so in order for the ranking to be valid, my comparisons have to be transitive

which, ha ha

I agree, that's why I think artists like Pole and Monolake, as well as some of B. Morgenstern's tracks, fit here. They're not necessarily super dancey, but they clearly share enough reference points with "pure" techno and house to fit in the same aesthetic. Whereas someone like, say, Fever Ray has a totally different lineage, even if her music is electronic and has beats.

Tuomas, Friday, 11 May 2012 07:37 (eleven years ago) link

Girl in the fever ray video is dancing! I wont defend it tho because I nommed it and said I didnt mind if they were removed because I wouldnt vote for it same with boc but it seems nobody cared and they ended up in the final list either way.

I promised to do the 90s poll, but I'm not sure what time period it should cover. Including the late 80s makes sense in that the the electronic dance music boom of the early 90s began then. But how far back should we go? To 1988, with "Good Life", "Theme from S-Express", "Bango (To the Batmobile)", etc? To 1987, with "Acid Tracks", "Strings of Life", "Pump Up the Volume" "The Promised Land", etc? To 1986, with "Your Love", "Love Can't Turn Around", "Can You Feel It", etc? Or even further, to include early house, Cybotron & Model 500, electro? Or should it just be 1990-1999 so it's simpler? Maybe a separate poll for 80s dance music?

I'm going to try and vote tonight but it's probably worth extending the deadline rather than running a poll with a tiny number of voters?

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 08:53 (eleven years ago) link

I have a shortlist of 80 now but I agree with extending the deadline because 1000+ nominations is so daunting.

Amazed potential high-placers LCD's Yeah and Katy B's On a Mission aren't in there but I guess I should have nominated them myself instead of kvetching now.

Get well soon Tim.

i would consider extending the deadline but i would want a roll call of who needs an extension, so that i know when to start counting ballots.

the late great, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 15:29 (eleven years ago) link

The thing with a theme like this, unlike a single-artist poll, is that there are so many factions - there are producers, labels, even genres I've ignored entirely and I'm sure that will be the case for a lot of voters, so you need a certain number of voters before any meaningful overlap will occur. I can see most of my tracks dying a lonely death if there are less than 20 ballots.

Get wolves (DL), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

just sent in my ballot too.
at some point I had to stop splitting hairs between adjacent tunes out of the 50 and hope for approx current favour/ranking within around 10 spots, except for the all important Top 5/Top 10. loved hearing (relistening to) many of these tunes again!

Nah, that went out far earlier. I find his solo stuff a little too dry. If there was any solo effort of his I'd pick, it would be this remix:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CFL60yk0rw

Anyway, this was super tough, but going through the list brought up a few "so THATS what that track was called" moments and a few new discoveries. These are the closest eleven to making it, that I had to cut off in the end.

kassem mosse - 12 a1
akufen - deck the house
donato dozzy - gol

efdemin - lohn & brot

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 May 2012 11:35 (eleven years ago) link

I have to say I don't really see the point in posting in a poll like this if you're not interested in spending some time listening to tracks you are unfamiliar with, but I guess people have their own reasons.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 31 May 2012 12:52 (eleven years ago) link

I tried it with the hip hop tracks but I was ploughing through them at such a rate that I underrated tracks which only really hit me when they featured in the countdown. I don't like to feel like I'm just harvesting music en masse. But obviously everyone approaches these things differently.

one of the most interesting things about this poll for me is (my perceived) notion that EDM tracks are probably among the least "timeless" of genre tunes because it's so given to quick trends and that ceaseless thirst for The Next Big Thing. could be my relative lack of knowledge of 'the scene' though.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Sunday, 3 June 2012 00:27 (eleven years ago) link

I would say that if anything the opposite is the case, in particular the format of the DJ mix allows for a constant reintegration of "the classics" into contemporary contexts.

Tim F, Sunday, 3 June 2012 00:43 (eleven years ago) link

But doesn't that imply that those "classics" have fallen away a bit? Like there needs to be some time away for certain styles to come back and then you recontextualize the classics? Idk I think I view things kind of askew. I was reading an interview with Abrantee where talks about how UK Funky was the thing but then everyone was looking for something fresh and now people are moving to Afrobeats. To what extent does the rise of Afrobeats require the demise of UK Funky?

I'll cop to not really knowing what I'm talking about though. I spent a lot of time at indie discos (lol) and Optimo (which was always engaging with the past and the present) so it felt like a lot of other clubs were very much centred on The Now music-wise in comparison.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Sunday, 3 June 2012 01:00 (eleven years ago) link

Like there needs to be some time away for certain styles to come back and then you recontextualize the classics?

This is true of everything everywhere though - it's not like Optimo played lots of songs from 5 years ago.

To the extent that indie discos are/were any different I think this is only because so few songs each year made it into the indie disco canon; my experience of going out to indie discos was that you heard the same songs every week forever because the DJs had so few options. OTOH that was circa 2000 and pre the New Rock Revolution so maybe things changed.

Certainly there are some dance scenes that are more current-focused and ignore the past more than others, but I think if we're going to paint in broad brushstrokes then I would say that dance music pays more attention rather than less to the canonisation of old classics.

To what extent does the rise of Afrobeats require the demise of UK Funky?

Broadly speaking this is correct but of course the very "demise" of UK Funky also has the effect of hardening perception of what its anthems were. By virtue of how they operate clubbing-based scenes have a more collectivist notion of what characterises the sound of a particular era than you might find in, say, rock scenes.

Tim F, Sunday, 3 June 2012 01:21 (eleven years ago) link

That was, I suppose, what I was getting at. As I scrolled through the 1,000+ noms here, I could only pick a handful that I might consider to be canonised, which is why I'm really interested to see what people have landed on and to what extent there's a consensus.

ime it was always "try out new band early on" but then the last hour or two would always be "Another Girl, Another Planet" or x Smiths song etc. There seemed to be a real trepidation when everyone's on the floor to try out something too new. Club DJs, otoh, are always reaching for the newest thing, and you might "Ragysh" or whatever (haven't been dancing in a while as you can probably tell) a lot over the course of a few months and then it disappears.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Sunday, 3 June 2012 02:12 (eleven years ago) link

I guess it has to do with audience as well as the style. Indie discos are about "i want to dance to this song/I don't want to dance to this song" so people get up and sit down a lot more than at a club where they just want to dance and the more the DJ can wow them the better, but it tends to be less about "I want to dance to Ragysh" and more "oh wow I love this track" as they're already dancing.

for bigger tune yes they are likely to get a big peak in it being played and then falls away, but a lot of great DJs (arpiar, zip, panorama bar residents, cdv residents etc ) will play stuff from all kinds of different periods, you just won't necessarily know that

partly but more i think its about a set, as in how a bunch of things hang together

coal, Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:41 (eleven years ago) link

That was sort of my point, though admittedly poorly made. You're up dancing, and it's up to the DJ to make it really exciting, and it's those standout tracks that get people really excited (this is opposed to indie disco where you get up to dance to a song or two, and when you don't like one, you just sit down again - it's about individual selection rather than the whole piece).

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:44 (eleven years ago) link

overall i see where you are coming from re:timeless but one of the things i love about dance music (or at least non UK-focused dance music) is actually a weird sense of true timelessness, records from the past aren't necessarily "oh here's this thing from the past that sounds like its from the past" its more "this record is going to work right now and it could have been made at any time who even knows". i actually like house music's non-changing nature, house music is always house music...is a dan bell record from the 90s dated?

of course there are still a lot of the records on this nomination list that are definitely dated (all that eulberg and ananda type stuff....and anyone voting for mouth to mouth is living in some kind of nostalgia zone) , but in a way its only bigger hits that get 'dated', and most records aren't actually like that

coal, Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:51 (eleven years ago) link

Definitely voted for Mouth to Mouth out of nostalgia, good times were had.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:55 (eleven years ago) link

that's why I'm interested! I want to see what records have come through being passing phases or big hits for a time and are now deemed truly 'timeless'. I'm definitely not a House purist though, and that's gonna come into this poll a lot I reckon. House remains the same maybe but minimal (MNML?) was a thing and then it wasn't, dubstep was a thing and then it morphed, UK Funky etc etc etc.

all I was really getting at is that this poll, in my mind, is more interesting than, say, a best albums of the 00s where Kid A is gonna sweep into a top 10 spot or whatever because I think there's a more agreed-upon canon in other genres than there is in EDM, and a lot of that has to do with trends (if I go to an indie disco every week in 2004, skip 2005 and 2006 completely, and go every week in 2007, I will probably be able to catch up fairly quickly on whatever I missed, whereas doing the same thing in EDM clubs would mean i would have completely missed out on a lot of stuff).

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Sunday, 3 June 2012 07:13 (eleven years ago) link

You could just as easily argue that it's not the timeless qualities of dance music that lead to the 20 year cycle of reappropriation, its the music that is quintessentially of its time. No one likes Italo disco because it sounds like it was made yesterday, it got dug up again because of its influence on house and its novelty factor as kitsch. I voted for music that reminded me of the last 12 years, not the music I think I'll still like in a decade.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 3 June 2012 07:29 (eleven years ago) link

I've had a latin freestyle song stuck in my head for three days so its possible I suffer from an unique viewpoint on the subject, fortunately for me there are a lot of people with better taste than mine on this board.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 3 June 2012 08:04 (eleven years ago) link

I want to see what records have come through being passing phases or big hits for a time and are now deemed truly 'timeless'.

i think 'big hits' (of any genre) sort of become 'out of time'...almost the opposite of timeless, in that regardless of actual sound (dated or no) their ubiquity takes them outside of normal time.

You could just as easily argue that it's not the timeless qualities of dance music that lead to the 20 year cycle of reappropriation, its the music that is quintessentially of its time.

i think yes - music quintessentially of its time (italo disco, 90s drum'n'bass, electroclash or whatever) is what falls out of time and gets reapproriated - but lots of music isn't quite so of a particular time (gemini, daniel bell) and doesn't really fall out of time as such and therefore doesn't have faddish reappropriation in the same way

coal, Sunday, 3 June 2012 09:17 (eleven years ago) link

I voted for music that reminded me of the last 12 years, not the music I think I'll still like in a decade.

― Josiah Alan, Sunday, June 3, 2012

this poll is kind of a composite of those two views. if i'm voting in 2012 about records from 2002 then i'm kind of voting on music that i DID end up liking a decade later, no? unless you are taking self into past and voting on nostalgia alone

coal, Sunday, 3 June 2012 09:21 (eleven years ago) link

House remains the same maybe but minimal (MNML?) was a thing and then it wasn't,

yeah but a lot of that thing about minimal being in and then out was really just about labelling or defining rather than actual music, stuff gets tagged as minimal then the term falls out of fashion and then "oh look these particular records were never minimal after all" - i mean is a villalobos set from today drastically different from one in 2005? i'd say there's a lot of continuity there! could be totally different records from different periods but could easily take stuff from one set and put it in the othea lot of those records are 'timeless' in that they could be from any particular time, if he plays a record from 1999 next to one from 2008 its not necessarily obvious at all...

...guess this kind of comes back to that argument about retromania (which i think makes a certain sense in a UK context, with the turnover of genres and reappropriations but not so much on a wider scale with house music where there is more continuity

coal, Sunday, 3 June 2012 09:53 (eleven years ago) link

Villalobos sets may not be drastically different but I suppose that a Villalobos set in 2016 may not necessarily be the same draw it was in 2006, that generation's clubbers may just see his entire approach as old hat, and the older ones aren't going out as much. Actually Villalobos is kind of a bad example here because he pretty much ploughs his own furrow but you get the point I'm making. But that's the same for all genres really, dance or otherwise.

Really big ubiquitous-on-dancefloors records like Ragysh or, before that, something like Rej, kind of fall in and out of fashion in the way that most pop music trends tend to. They'll be huge for a while, then just put away for a bit as they seem too obvious and people are maybe a little bit tired of them, then they start coming back and just never go out of fashion. A lot of the sounds that appear in this poll will maybe sound a bit anachronistic on current dancefloors but the records themselves that appear will be the ones with staying power. The records that really do blow up and then disappear without trace by and large are the ones that weren't really that great in the first place.

Matt DC, Sunday, 3 June 2012 11:35 (eleven years ago) link

Debate's a bit muddied as well because some of the genres we're talking about, most obviously filter disco and electroclash but also increasingly 2-step and subsequent genres are re-emerging as basic building blocks of current chart pop. But that's what you get when you have a generation young enough to have had rave music around their entire lives.

Matt DC, Sunday, 3 June 2012 11:39 (eleven years ago) link

just using villalobos as an example he himself may not be the same draw in 2016 (esp as he'll prob quit DJing in the next year or two) but the records played fit into a theme of continuity and many can be from any time - same thing as with the get perlonized nights or arpiar..

coal, Sunday, 3 June 2012 11:55 (eleven years ago) link

they'll also be the ones that get most votes (mouth to mouth, orbitalife) - records that really blow up and then disappear, it isn't because they're no good its because they tend to dominate, and then disrupt the flow of a set once they get heard a lot (In My System is anything but a bad record but could only really be played pretty sparingly now, even tho in no way does it sound dated)

coal, Sunday, 3 June 2012 12:05 (eleven years ago) link

some drop away because they sound dated, some drop away because they become overplayed (especially anything bombastic or anthemic or whatever), yeah they may be reappropriated at a later time but they still drop out

whereas like idk tribue by moodymann say - this record would fit perfectly not only when it came out and today, but at any point inbetween - its not a record that would have sounded anachronistic at any point

i don't think "mouth to mouth" sounds anachronistic at all and in fact i just used "mund zu mund" in a set ... i hate to poo poo on long discussions but i think a lot of what gukbe and coal are talking about come down to the specific listener rather than the scene or country or genre.

(if I go to an indie disco every week in 2004, skip 2005 and 2006 completely, and go every week in 2007, I will probably be able to catch up fairly quickly on whatever I missed, whereas doing the same thing in EDM clubs would mean i would have completely missed out on a lot of stuff)

like this just strikes me as off-the-top-of-my-head idea making rather than anything rooted in reality

the late great, Sunday, 3 June 2012 19:24 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw i dont think mouth to mouth SOUNDS anachronistic (which is why i separate it from things like nathan fake or eulberg), more just that it was such a big and bombastic record that it seemed difficult to play once its immediate time had passed - your experience may be different but i've never heard a DJ play it since when it was played the whole time

coal, Sunday, 3 June 2012 19:27 (eleven years ago) link

i don't think i've heard it out very much - in fact i don't know that i've heard it since, either - but i don't think that's rooted in some quality of the indie rock vs dance genres or club scenes, i'm sure we wouldn't have to think very long to come up with a few indie anthems from 2005/2006 that don't get played anymore as well as some that do. it's not like you'll hear le tigre, bloc party, the killers, franz ferdinand, etc if you go to an indie disco this weekend.

the late great, Sunday, 3 June 2012 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

i mean YOU might, i probably wouldn't and haven't lately, and as far as "catching up with the sound" goes i think that has much much more to do w/ the listener than anything else

the late great, Sunday, 3 June 2012 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

like this just strikes me as off-the-top-of-my-head idea making rather than anything rooted in reality

I exaggerated timescales but I mean I basically quit going to indie discos for a little over a year and when I went back it was all the same songs save one or two new things. I haven't been out dancing at all in over a year, and I only know a track like "Ragysh" because of ILX. I've never heard it in a club or even in a mix. I'm using that track just because, but if it were a big hit, say, I could imagine hearing it A LOT for a while and then not at all for ages after that (used to hear "Beautiful Life" a lot when it came out, then didn't hear it out anywhere for a long while, for example). I could see missing out on a number of tracks if you drop out of the scene or the music for a year.

coal, Sunday, 3 June 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

this is all obv based out of personal experience, and as someone mentioned, it's a lot different from country to country and even club-specific. i didn't think my original point was all that controversial though. I didn't go dancing for a year in 2007-2008 or roundabout then when I moved to Alabama and to this day I've never heard the Frankie Knuckles remix of "Blind" in a club, and the way people talked about it when it came out I got the impression that people heard it out and about a lot.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Sunday, 3 June 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

ftr i think you know what you're talking about but i also think that your experience has to do w/ your personal relationship w/ dance music and indie music, and that the same is true for just about anybody, and it's not your fault, all of these ideas like continuity, familiarity, etc are basically dependent on the listener and don't have any meaning in and of themselves in a vacuum

the late great, Monday, 4 June 2012 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

mund zu mund is totally the superior, but tragically overlooked, younger sibling.

I figure there's also a bunch of sometime ILM posters who are authorities on the subject and whose contributions would be invaluable (e.g. d.l3one p.sh3rburne) but probably don't know this poll exists.

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

we gotta pound the pavement a bit, webmail the usual suspects

OTOH if they were interested in ILM you'd think they'd have seen it buy now

the late great, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:06 (eleven years ago) link

Both of these records are too recent though - you need about a 10yr period of grace before they start to reappear. FWIW I don't think either of these records are that great, nor will they appear particularly high up the poll (Mouth to Mouth might place somewhere, I doubt many ppl care that much about Orbitalife at this stage in the game).

but they are records that disappear is the point....not when they reappear, but the fact that they disappear

many votes on chart will be based on memories, mouth to mouth will place highly

coal, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:55 (eleven years ago) link

coal, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:57 (eleven years ago) link

coal, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:58 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know why I'm the only one having trouble making sense of this:

over 1000 nominations

50 votes each

So in one ballot we should include as many nominations as we want (up to 1000)? And then we choose our top 50 from all of the nominations from everyone? Sorry for being dense.

viborg, Monday, 4 June 2012 23:49 (eleven years ago) link

we already nominated, just pick your 50 favorites and rank them

My fault for missing the nominations of course.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 06:41 (eleven years ago) link

He's a resident advisor writer, blogger and DJ who is known for his strong support of American artists and labels like Omar S, Jus Ed, FXHE and Underground quality. He was always the nicest poster and was banned for an argument with Local Garda that got a little too personal.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 06:55 (eleven years ago) link

Wasn't always, man I'm bad with the typoes lately.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 06:56 (eleven years ago) link

A lot of the music Pipecock rates is great, but his Internet persona really grates as he seems to instinctively dismiss a lot of music because it doesn't fit into his rules. He's probably popped up on all forums at some point, posted for a while, got into a fight with some regulars and then left.

Luomo - "Synkro"

the late great, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 07:17 (eleven years ago) link

no seriously though i think maybe because it came out way back in 2000 people forgot about it

how about for the next poll we let it sneak by w/ any other 2000 tracks, it'll be 1988-2000 and 2000-2012

the late great, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 07:20 (eleven years ago) link

Probably cause virtually everyone will be voting for tessio instead?

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 08:36 (eleven years ago) link

I would have voted for "Synkro" over "Tessio" but I always forget that those singles didn't come out until the same year as the album; such promptness is so unusual in dance music.

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 08:42 (eleven years ago) link

Josiah Alan, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 09:20 (eleven years ago) link

i think this is because of some discussion in the nom's thread about trying to steer clear of edits for this poll, though there are loads of exceptions that snuck through

tbf i don't think the idjuts have really been working in "house" mode for awhile now unless you count the (sporadic / rare / obscure) droid EPs

there are probably parts of "puddle & spout" that are at least as house-ish as a kdj or theo track but i wasn't gonna nominate some obscure shit that wasn't going to get any votes

if i had i'd probably nominate "oochie coochie"

just do a write-in vote for your favorites

tbh tho if they didn't get nominated they probably wouldn't have placed

I'm not sure there's much point in me voting at all. Personally I'd rather just see the individual ballots so I can see where there's overlap with my tastes and hopefully get some new recommendations that way, instead of seeing a statistical analysis of the average tastes in dance music of a random sample of 10-15 ILMers.

Somehow I did get a little obsessed with this process, I can't resist a good poll. For my list I tried to conform to the nominated selections where appropriate but I feel like a lot of the nominated songs are not necessarily the artist's best work but rather just the most popular song or else the default 'critics choice' for a given artist. I figure about 1/3 of my selections match the nominations. Here's my picks, make of it what you will.

1. Antena - Camino Del Sol (Joakim Remix)
2. Sascha Funke - Mango Cookie (Dj Koze's Pink Moon Remix)
3. Balam Acab - Oh, Why?

6. Henrik Schwarz, Âme & Dixon feat. Derrick L. Carter - Where We At Version 1
7. Black Leotard Front - Casual Friday
8. Mount Kimbie - Maybes
9. Floating Points - Love Me Like This (Nonsense Dub)
10. Tracey Thorn - Grand Canyon (Ada Vocal)
11. Oni Ayhun - OAR 003-B

15. Ital Tek - Arashiyama
16. Hercules & Love Affair - Classique #2 (Edit)

feel like hystereo, agoria and arto mwambe are decidedly b-list, ot to be generous, "deep picks" compared to stuff like "black water", "man with the red face", "one more time" etc etc

sort of know what you mean, with hystereo it's more the inclusion of a track that isn't their best that surprises me. with agoria it's that plus the fact that my personal experiences are clashing with whatever detached critical "is this better" questions you ask. i've heard that agoria track out way more times than "man with the red face", which i'd consider a "deep pick" in reality. "man with the red face" is brilliant but it doesn't feel essential to me, what year was at? i'm sure i heard it first soon after release but it's always felt like an older classic to me, the same way i feel about i dunno, "strings of life" or something, except i like "man with the red face" more than lots of those time-honoured tracks. i think if you go or used to go to clubs and stuff a lot some of these things lose their sheen and you're more inclined to go for the less popular pick, just because it might mean more.

i've got about half done, i'll post a list of stuff i think could have been included here too, not to nitpick or whatever just so people can hear it if they haven't heard it, or for the purposes of discussion.

prefer deep picks to classics whatever either of those things are idk but kinda dont really have any use for a list that has one more time in it

coal, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 09:50 (eleven years ago) link

I like 'One More Time', but Daft Punk by then were not really what I call dance music, it's electronic sure, but I couldn't lose myself on the dancefloor to something like that, it just seems far closer to rock than dance. There's verse/chorus/middle-eight, it's all disruptive to any kind of long form dancing experience.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 12:00 (eleven years ago) link

it's a close relation to a whole load of house tracks.

i'd have liked "too long" in there from that record but dunno if it'd make my top 50. it's all pretty reductive though.

…Such as?

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 12:52 (eleven years ago) link

i think what i was getting at is that i don't think of these poll lists so much as an indicator of quality - though it does manage that too, sometimes - but more an indicator of what a "canon" might be in terms of what tracks stick in people's minds and influence their reception of new dance music

personally i think "man with the red face" is an all-time banger

the late great, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:42 (eleven years ago) link

don't get me wrong, i love it, i think you're hitting on a sort of problem though. "man with the red face" is indisputably canonical, but if i am picking 50 tracks of the 00s, there are other things that i find more exciting. i'm prob not picking based on canon, personally, a mixture of what i feel about a track personally and my experiences with it, and an attempt to look at it for what it is or how effective it is, though it's all coloured by personal experiences for me.

hi everyone

i had about half the votes put into a spreadsheet when excel crashed and i haven't had any luck recovering my work

one of the things that's making this so tedious and time-consuming is that i got the ballots in many different formats and reconciling them into a spreadsheet is taking a long-ass time

it would be much easier if the emails were all delimited in the same ways. apparently excel has extremely limited capabilities in converting delimited text to spreadsheet

any ideas?

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 05:57 (eleven years ago) link

short of asking everyone to enter their ballots into a google spreadsheet themselves, which i haven't ruled out ...

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 05:58 (eleven years ago) link

for my paul simon poll i just put everything into notepad and from there into excel where i had the formulas already input e.g. 1st = x points and the calculations for average placement &c &c so the only stuff i had to do by hand were the # of first place votes... i think i had to clean up a couple of ballots first but it was p easy

for the spec fic poll i had an access database set up but i still had to reformat some stuff by hand before i could sort and calculate

Lamp, Friday, 13 July 2012 06:20 (eleven years ago) link

I'd suggest copying all the text to a text file, find and replace '-' with ',' and then saving that as a csv file.

When you open it in Excel the ',' will force cell divisions between each comma.

du mein bestie (micarl), Friday, 13 July 2012 06:35 (eleven years ago) link

the problem is that half the people didn't follow that format, i have a lot of supposedly tab-delimited stuff that's actually not

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 07:54 (eleven years ago) link

will using csv strip out the extra spaces in people's emails?

another problem i'm having is with inconsistent spacing

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 07:55 (eleven years ago) link

If it's a question of just reformatting ballots in word and sending them back i can definitely do that

EDB, Friday, 13 July 2012 09:40 (eleven years ago) link

In a text document you can find and replace double spaces with single spaces.

du mein bestie (micarl), Friday, 13 July 2012 11:33 (eleven years ago) link

Don't use word to format.

txt to csv then excel once the formatting's done.

du mein bestie (micarl), Friday, 13 July 2012 11:34 (eleven years ago) link

using textedit, it's really just a lack of consistency

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 11:38 (eleven years ago) link

I'm only getting 100 of the tracks on the Spotify play list Any help?

broom air, Friday, 13 July 2012 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

You can do what I did. Make an excel list with all of the songs by alphabetical order and then start filling up the next column with numbers. So say if someone voted for 'song a' you put a 1 next to it and if in the next ballot someone voted for that one again you change it for a 2, and so on. It's a tedious process but that's the problem of not submitting through some sort of program first. (I cant remember who on ILM makes the polls that run through a webpage first that sorts results automatically).

Anyhoo you can do that and I'm willing to help you count the numbers, or you can ask everyone to resubmit their ballots in whichever format you need.

Moka, Friday, 13 July 2012 17:04 (eleven years ago) link

Yea, why not tell us what format you want them in. Most should still have ballets in their sent items.

du mein bestie (micarl), Friday, 13 July 2012 17:27 (eleven years ago) link

i nominate jaymc as official results calculator, he said he'd LOVE to do it

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 13 July 2012 18:34 (eleven years ago) link

the calculation's not so much the problem, more just getting the shit into a spreadsheet

ok so first of all i want to be able to disaggregate the data so i want to preserve the ballots in the spreadsheet

i got five columns in my spreadsheet

they go: artist, song, remixer, points, voter

my method has been to import everyone's ballot in using hyphen and parenthesis as delimiters

theo parrish - falling up (carl craig remix)

becomes

theo parrish / falling up / carl craig

the nice thing about this is that i can then just copy in the assigned points in the fourth column and copy the voters' name into the fifth column

now the problem is that people have spaced their ballots all weird

one person might do

theo parrish - falling up

and another might do

theo parrish-falling up

and a third might do

theo parrish - falling up

which go into the spreadsheet as three different things: " falling up", "falling up" and " falling up", which jacks up the column sorting scheme

seriously though if somebody wants to enter all of this shit manually, that works for me

apologies everyone, i didn't anticipate being unemployed right now

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 19:30 (eleven years ago) link

i nominate jaymc as official results calculator, he said he'd LOVE to do it

I do like tabulating stuff, but I'm pretty low-tech and math-dumb, so I'd pretty much be doing what Moka suggested.

Ranked ballots get 50 points 1st place and 1 vote 50th place, right?

Only 5 ballots so far. This takes more time than I thought. Usually I start placing the numbers as the ballots get in the mail. Doing it all at once is exhausting.

I quit.

Moka, Thursday, 2 August 2012 02:50 (eleven years ago) link

just kidding. Hopefully I'll get final results by next week. Right now the top 10 is looking pretty weird safe for the first place which I'm sure will remain there.

Moka, Thursday, 2 August 2012 02:51 (eleven years ago) link

hi moka, can I resend my ballot?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 2 August 2012 02:52 (eleven years ago) link

only if i havent counted it yet.

So far I've counted:

Mine, Lamp, Tuomas and some guys names Josiah and Matt (ilm alias wasnt provided).

Is your name Josiah or Matt?

Moka, Thursday, 2 August 2012 02:59 (eleven years ago) link

also counted EDB and some Thomas cracklebox right now.

Moka, Thursday, 2 August 2012 03:47 (eleven years ago) link

also late did you send me your own ballot in therE?

Moka, Thursday, 2 August 2012 03:47 (eleven years ago) link

my name is aditya. if it's not a hassle i'd like to resend it. there are two crucial omissions, i'm afraid.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 2 August 2012 04:44 (eleven years ago) link

durr: I found it. It seems like your ballot was the last one that late received so you're fine if you send me one in the next couple of days. My email is above.

Well right now tracks everything below 70 points is a clusterfuck of tie-ins. I expect the numbers to become more separate as the ballots get included. Results for place 66th onwards are looking good with only five ties in there. Depending on how the numbers spread out we'll see in which place it'd be best to start the poll.

Moka, Monday, 6 August 2012 19:24 (eleven years ago) link

K five more ballots to the list:

That leaves it at 20 ballots so far so were halfway there. I want to notice that of those 1110 nom tracks 537 havent received a single vote so far.

I'm going on holiday next week, so imo the cut off date should be right now and the results should be posted over the next few days / the cut off date should be the end of August and the results rolled out after that
