Forgotten late-'80s/early-'90s pop singles

There's so much awesome stuff out there that falls under this banner. The more I dig, the more gold I remember/find. Sometimes it's an unjustly-forgotten single by an act that otherwise hit it big:

And sometimes it's a rad song by an act that, alas, never really entered the public consciousness:

Bring it, y'all.

I always thought "Don't Look Back" was easily the best Fine Young Cannibals song

I quite dig Martika's hi-NRG take on "I Feel The Earth Move."

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 May 2012 13:54 (1 year ago) Permalink

Ha, well I was specifically looking through a 1989 iTunes playlist. I will expand outwards from there. But it's one of my favorite pop music years, so it'll be gettin' some heavy representin' from me.

This thread was (partially) prompted by finding a recorded-from-the-radio mixtape I made in 7th grade (1989, natch) and spiraling out of control in trying to track down all of the stuff I listened to back then. Such as this one (from that tape):

Radiorama - "Daddy, Daddy"

I get the impression this one never got much stateside play outside of Florida, but maybe I'm wrong?

You Don't Throw Oranges On An Escalator (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 7 May 2012 14:14 (1 year ago) Permalink

"Rush Hour" is so awesome.

Milli Vanilli - "Girl, I'm Gonna Miss You"
Prince - "Batdance"
Radiorama - "Daddy, Daddy"
Surface - "Shower Me With Your Love"
Prince - "Scandalous"
Kevin Paige - "Don't Shut Me Out"

Side 2
Yaz - "Situation '88"
Indigo Girls - "Closer To Fine"
Rick Astley - "Ain't Too Proud To Beg"
The Cure - "Love Song"
Stevie B - "In My Eyes"
Jody Watley - "Friends"
Soul II Soul - "Keep On Movin'"

I guess rap isn't really what this thread is asking for, but I want to put this here for some reason. I remember this primarily as its chorus hook, anyway. It's certainly very 1990.

The idea here is less about singles forgotten by you guys (as if the ILM hivemind would ever let a song fall through the cracks of history) and more about singles that had a brief moment of popularity but never really became latter-day radio staples or overused in commercials/movies or whatever. I'm way familiar with a lot of this stuff, but only because I've made the effort to remain familiar with it.

I thought it was!

I didn't post it yet and I'm kinda youtubed out, but I hope no-one's forgotten When I See You Smile by Bad English. I think it's still one of those ballads that always ends up on a compilation every few years...I am not ashamed to say that I love love love it.
If only because Jon Waite had that not-so-hot-dude with hot-sounding-singing-voice thing going on.

I adore a couple of John Waite solo hits but Bad English is an excrescence. A relative bought me the tape of that first album in late '89. The only I can stand is the (forgotten!) second hit "Price of Love."

Good stuff on this thread so far. Firefox users: Flashblock addon is very useful for Youtube-heavy threads like this.

Is this considered forgotten or just not very well known in North America?

Natural Selection - Do Anything

A top ten nineties song for me: a #2 hit I don't even hear on urban radio anymore.

Brent Bourgeois - "Dare To Fall In Love"

I don't know how I managed to completely forget this song's existence and yet still recall every note and word upon hearing it.
