ex:el vs Gorgeous tbh
might actually vote Gorgeous

*Is* that Donald Sutherland saying that?
sure sounds like him..

this will be crazy to most ppl but I really do think of this as "Spanish Heart" vs "Moses"
― thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 14:47 (1 year ago) Permalink
Spanish Heart, to me, really was just proof that Barney should not have done guest spots on other people's arms. ;-)
― White Chocolate Cheesecake, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 14:48 (1 year ago) Permalink
Also... "Neffer-teetee"

ha – "Spanish Heart" is Sumner at his best ("I FEEL SO. GOOD./WHEN I LOOK AT YOU").
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 14:53 (1 year ago) Permalink
OK, for years and years I had a C90 tape with ex:el on one side and Technique on the other. I just don't like him singing for other people.
― White Chocolate Cheesecake, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 14:59 (1 year ago) Permalink
(Don't we have this argument at least once a year, though, Alfred?)
― White Chocolate Cheesecake, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:01 (1 year ago) Permalink
It's always fun too!
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:03 (1 year ago) Permalink
voted 90 but as long as no-one goes for Don Solaris then it's cool
don't remember that 2003 thing at all
― Cantera: Vulgar Display Of Puyol (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:04 (1 year ago) Permalink
Yeah, though IIRC, it always ends with one of us getting out the Electronic 12" extended remixes and dancing around the kitchen in agreement.
x-post to Alfred

I would stay up day and night vs Don't want nobody-body-body but you

omg I'd forgotten the awesome segue from "Spanish Heart" into "Leo Leo"

Gorgeous by a nose, I mean Moses.

one of the first concerts I saw in Boston was 808 State on the tour for ex:el; I hadn't gotten the album yet so when the kicked off their encore with "San Francisco", that was my first exposure to the song and it fucking blew face off
― thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:32 (1 year ago) Permalink
One of the few acts I've seen three times.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:53 (1 year ago) Permalink
Saw them once, Ian McCullough was a guest singer.
Boy George and MC Kinky stood in front of us (funny, it was MCK I recognised before my gf said "yeah, and that's BG with her!")
― Mark G, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:56 (1 year ago) Permalink
I saw them three times too; twice in Boston, once in LA (totally at random)
― thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:57 (1 year ago) Permalink
lol my vote in this is going to end up being "whichever album I listen to last before I vote" so there might actually end up being a Don Solaris vote (massively underrated album btw, though admittedly not as relentlessly good as the two that precede it)

I haven't listened to Don Solaris in about 12 years.
To its credit, it does sound quite singular, in a very mid-late-90s fashion. I suspect Massey was very impressed by the general vibe Bjork concocted for Post (the creation of which, of course, he assisted).
It's post-jungle in the way that pretty much everything was at that point, but for the most part ("Azura" aside, and "Azura" is great) the rhythms are not too fast or fiddly or filled with frippery, instead they're both stately and chunky enough that you could imagine 808 State having gotten to that point rhythmically without jungle's interference. Combined with all the twinkly ethnodelic sparkles it makes it seem like exactly the album 808 State should have made in 1997.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:40 (1 year ago) Permalink
OTOH I had forgotten the album's post "Azura" dip which I'm hoping i'm remembering correctly reaches a nadir with "Lopez" - wow this is a silly song.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:56 (1 year ago) Permalink
"Jerusahat" is great, though
― thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:58 (1 year ago) Permalink
I think when they did the "one in 10" remix, I was like, why?

YES.

oh man, I am currently listening to "Bond" and all of its stompy obviousness is just so so so so exactly my thing, plus all the weird sound effects and echoey harmonica squeals floating in the background... fucking YES
also "Azura" was the song that introduced me to Louise Rhodes and, by extension, Lamb
― thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 17:46 (1 year ago) Permalink
oh dude I'd forgotten about "Balboa"
yes I do fucking love this album
― thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 18:13 (1 year ago) Permalink
I don't mind "Lopez" but it does spoil the flow of the album, although that's kind of a hallmark of an 808 State album (I know I'm the only person who thinks this but "Lift" does a similar thing on ex:el where it just takes me out of the mood of the album in a really annoying way).
I adore the piano line on "Kohoutek" as well as those layered cymbals and bells

Are there any good MIXED mixes of acid house?
― Blomqvist, Jesper (admrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 04:55 (1 year ago) Permalink
Yes. Get the Hardfloor X-Mix from the mid-90s especially.
But I don't think of either that or Warp Influences as sounding much like Ex:El, which is more difficult to place.

I voted Ninety as it has the purest naive futuristic aesthetic ("welcome to techno citay!") - unsullied by self-conscious collaborations (with people I usually love). Utd State 90, with it's three versions of Pacific is even better.
