She's getting all the hype and it seems her thing is to rap on top of electronic songs (lazy jay, lone, machinedrum, jimmy edgar). She'll be releasing her debut album later this year. Will she rise or will she flop?

If she can throw together more stuff that sounds as interesting as 212, then yeah, I think she'll do just fine. I guess we'll have to wait and find out.

I love they say she's not a one trick pony, yet every track she released in 2011 was just her performing on top of a song that already existed. That's exactly ONE trick.

that's not really a 'trick,' that's just something a lot of new artists do, especially rappers, whether you think that's a valid measure of their talent or creativity or not. obviously that's probably not what she's going to do on her major label album anyway.

It's not bad, but I feel like I've heard tracks before where it's just somebody chatting up somebody else over a beat. From what I understand, though, this was just made to be runway music.

I swooned over "212" too, and notice I really don't have any other nasty female rap on 125-130 BPM house beats, which is a pretty natural environment. Not asking for a derail, but I'd appreciate a few pointers to Bank's precursors.

Obviously Azealia Banks is not the first or the best rapper to use assonance and internal vowel rhyme this way. I hope my blurb doesn’t make it seem like I’ve never heard rap music before! I’m fully aware that most ‘good’ (god, whatever that means amirite?) rappers play with phonemes, both vowel and consonant, in a similar manner. But Azealia’s use of assonance struck me for two reasons. First, she sustains a very high level of internal rhyme based on the same few sounds (say “212” and then say “ruin you cunt”) for two whole verses. Which is impressive although I’m not interested much in ‘impressive’ rapping. I own a Twista album. I got it. But all the assonance, especially when combined with Azealia’s bitchy flow (the verses are, fundamentally, just a stream of rudely-posed questions), simply makes the rapping fun to listen to regardless of the actual substance of what she’s saying. A lot of rappers just don’t get this shit. I don’t consider myself a head and I know some people will disagree with me on this one, but, in my opinion, you can rap about the dumbest, most useless shit ever as long as you sound hot on the track. The other effect of the the assonant lyrics, is that Azealia ends up holding her mouth in a “oo” position a lot, which, in the snobby drawl she affects sounds more like an “eww.” Azealia puts that “eww” sound to work. I know I said that in my original blurb, but I don’t really know how else to explain it. It’s a concept I learned doing Shakespeare shows—you give respect to the sounds, let them resonate through your body, and they will work for you, they will help you be truthful in your circumstances. The sounds are honest. So Azealia Banks filters the tone of her rapping through the actual sounds that she’s rapping. Without ever needing to say it or even perform it, she reads as disgusted, bored, and condescending. Talkin’ shit and making oral sex jokes, she raps like a classically trained actor might, and that’s a very good thing.

The mixtape is a mixed bag, Esta Noche is wonderful, the EP is perfect Crystal Waters 90s house rap vogue realness. I hope the album is more like the EP than the mixtape although her verse on that MIA remix shows she can rap on a more traditional beat pretty well too.

i feel like a lot of what's come up as a result of her rapping over dance tracks has to do with dance producers' sense of propriety over their beats vs. rap producers (which you see even in, just, pop songs having a "featuring David Guetta" or "featuring Calvin Harris" credit where there would never be a "featuring Mike Will Made It" or whatever). in addition to her obviously being an asshole about these things. i can imagine Baauer being aware of that stuff happening with her before and wanting to nip it in the bud -- didn't she say she put it online after she attempted and failed to get it approved to use on her own album? that's a little different than just "i did a freestyle over the new Drake song, check it out."

it's kind of a funny reversal too...instead of producers taking acapellas and making remixes (authorized or not, and credited appropriately), it's a vocalist jumping on hot already-released instrumentals. i think it's happening more and more now that producers have a higher profile. i see 'beat scene' producers complaining all the time on twitter about obscure rappers using their beats and then putting "produced by flying lotus" or whatever, and it's the latter part that's problematic since it implies involvement/collaboration. except it's a much bigger deal when the vocalist has the profile of AB, and can presumably afford to actually work with name producers.

Not defending her or anyone else, but don't rappers always toss around the word 'faggot' as often as 'nigga' and people still twerk to it as if they didn't hear those words? Why is it, that a female rapper is getting heat for something that is par for the course, not just in hip hop, but for life for some people. I know many people, from the hood to the suburbs, who toss around 'nigga' and 'faggot' as if they have no historical meaning whatsoever. I hear Filipino, Latino, and everyone else use 'nigga' as their equivalent to 'dude' and it's rare for someone to jump up and be vocally defensive about it because a lot of people, for better or worse, don't grant those words the same power we all collectively once did. Especially the generation born in the late 80's, early 90's. Is her use of the word ignorant? Of course! She is like so many troubled girls I grew up with (who went on to audition for Bad Girls Club) that are angry and defensive as hell and are not interested in anyone's rules of decorum. As a black faggot myself, I hate that someone who is supposed to be a part of my community is spreading ignorance in the way AB is. I don't think it's ever ok to excuse the use of 'faggot' in a derogatory manner. You just give certain people all the more reason to be ignorant and run with it (i.e. Chris Rock and his nigga vs black people argument).
