Love the Rhine Gold and have decided that I also really like the Phenomenal Handclap Band one, at least the title type. But I can't picture that one existing as anything other than a vaguely musty smelling LP.

if you like energetic tropical dance music:
Soundway are set to release the debut album from Batida, the brainchild of Angolan / Portuguese DJ Mpula aka Pedro Coquenão. A distinctly modern and vibrant project with its feet firmly rooted in the past, Batida combine samples from old 1970s Angolan tracks with modern electronic dance music. Music is the starting point but through dance, graphics, photography, radio and video, Batida expands, taking in politics and social commentary but always bringing it back to the party.Being the first of a string of brand new projects, this eponymous first album sees Soundway taking a slightly different direction in 2012 and beyond. Championed mostly for their work in un-earthing and re-releasing classic, rare and vintage tropical recordings, Soundway have started signing new acts that have drawn on and been inspired by the kind of music found on the label’s groundbreaking compilations and re-issues.What originally started out as a radio show designed to promote new African music has slowly evolved into a collaborative project crossing continents.Whereas nearly all of kuduro (Angolan electronic music) has no obvious references to its country’s musical heritage, it is deeply engrained in Batida’s music. Sampling tracks from 1970s Angola, Batida is a reinterpretation of Angola’s musical past, bringing it firmly into the modern day.Batida’s high energy live show features dancers, live samples, percussionists, MCs alongside visuals and images (both archive and new) of Angolan streets, war and fragments of tribal life.

Basically another branding of nostalgia. It's funny cos i read mentions of Seapunk somewhere but only just now realized when i was a kid in the late 80s/early 90s i went through a phase with my brothers were our clothes were like really neon colors and tropical themed and completely stupid. I didn't get the reference cos I just never thought that style was worth digging up. How wrong i was.
Sounds more or less like the 2012 equiv to the 2008 hipster jackass that wears headbands everywhere.

On the one hand you do have the deliberate cheapness and the crassness of the skull, which is entirely in keeping with the 80's horror soundtrack vibe of the music and there's some sort of narrative being set up - the skull isn't facing itself, it's freaking out at something unknown located outside of the shot (in the car? outside the car?). The different reflections in the mirror are puzzling cos it looks like the windows are reflecting back into it. You've got that white van and you're wondering what's in the back, or who just got out. And where does that path outside lead? And then you have the beauty of the raindrops on the windscreen, that lovely greenness of the garden, the way the sky is actually quite bright, but the blue sun strip thing is modulating the light.

I'm pretending also that it's Mike Watt freaking out five miles down the road from the Double Nickels shot as Donald Pleasence steps out of the van ahead.

Short answer? No.Long answer? I think we're about out of suitable names if the hundreds of horribly named bands I come across at work every day are any indication. I'd rather have two artists named Doldrums than even one named Stony Danza or Forever The Sickest Kids.

if ohno had just put the doom character of the graf as a central factor then i'd love it more, as it is, the end result, is very ukhh 2005.
then again that could be the intention.

ukhh = uk hip hophhc = hip hop connection, a cult british rap rag that closed down about 5 years ago and was way better than source/xxl/fader/other. also used to have a monthly covermount cd often w/ generic graf/cartoon type covers.
problem with ohno cover is that doom is the only recognisable cartoon, the rest are hard to pick out

also ukhh p much died with hip hop connection, as far as i can tell. lots of the dudes seemed to drift into this lame kinda-electro/kinda-dubsteppy poprap thing since but its not the same, even if dudes are finally earning. its a shame tho, so much of my teenage years was spent on buses reading about some white dude in nottingham, listening to early 1xtra mixtapes with talented guys freestyles who you never heard of again.

I've gotten used to the Goat one, it's alright. I wish they had put the song titles somewhere other than the easily damaged slipcase. The vinyl looks like it's die cut even more?
Killing Joke cover is not great.

Last four are all terrible. I sorta like the Kesha one but then again Kesha rowr
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Saturday, 22 September 2012 15:09 (7 months ago) Permalink
Kesha one kinda cool, but I wonder if that's a low quality image or something, cos something looks kinda off about it. Like it's a good composition but the way the image was exported is all cruddy and muddy.

That Gengras thing looks like a New Age album that would turn out to be really disappointing in the end.

The Pitchfork best and worst lists are up. Honestly, the worst list is pretty mild compared to some of the stuff I've actually seen, and at least half of the best list could've just as easily been placed in the worst list.
Did they not peep our thread this year?

re: Pitchfork best/worst album covers
I was glad to see the Lone album in the best of list because I think that's a really nice cover, but yeah, otherwise most of the best ones seemed like just the most popular Pitchfork albums as opposed to ones that had really nice design.
Enjoyed seeing the sad goths on the worst of list.
― Moodles, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 22:08 (5 months ago) Permalink
haha remember when pfork posted the shop I did of Chris Brown's Graffiti with the blue bowtie from the Larry King interview in their "Worst Album Covers"?

Jesus, they really could have some kind of warning about the boner cover. It just froze on it while the page was loading.
This cover is genuinely baffling to me - I honestly can't even imagine what it's trying to suggest:
