Yay, for "I Wish", one of the best one-hit-wonder hits of all time. It was my #26; I remember around the time it was a hit, I shaved my head bald for the first time, and some friends of mine I thought I looked like Skee-Lo, so they started calling me that. "Tha Crossroads" was my #1, fuck anyone who thinks it isn't good! The reasons I put it on the top spot:

* Again, it was a big part of my youth.

* Combining sweet doo-wop vocals with gangsta rap was a brilliant idea, and this was the first time I (and millions of others) heard BTnH do it, so back then it felt like such a revelation.

* Despite the seemingly positive afterlife imagery in the video, the song is all about being afraid of death; the sentiment is expressed in such a straightforward and timeless way that it's almost impossible to ignore. "I miss my uncle Charles, he shouldn't be gone in front of his home..." - who of us couldn't empathize with that? I wasn't religious when the song came out and I'm still not, but the simple, insistent repetition of "and we pray and we pray and we pray" in it always pulls my heart strings: it tells so much about the uncertainties death brings to our lives and how we try to deal with it every day.

1st of the Month is the only one of those I recall off the top of my head... yeah I dunno they just never clicked with me. I'm not gonna argue that Big Pimpin is not a pop song (obviously it is) but in terms of radio programming and regional popularity in the Bay, the more I think about it I'm inclined to think that the Pac/Biggie murders really are the key thing... listening to/promoting east coast stuff seems border-line heretical around here. 2Pac is like a patron saint. Even years after the fact I can easily imagine how Bay Area stations wouldn't be super-keen on promoting one of Biggie's buddies, no matter how pop. Pac seems to have rather clearly lost the legacy sweepstakes for the rest of the country though - Biggie's revered as one of the greatest rappers of all-time, Pac is kind of a footnote, an also-ran. (I don't give a shit about either of them, tbh)

I don't think Pac is a footnote at all, given the ridiculous amount of posthumous stuff released (not to mention the "Tupac is still alive" stuff)

Yes, I think you're right. I was tapping these out from memory on my phone last night and knew I'd forget a couple of obvious ones. Feel like I'm underrating 80s Def Jam too but not sure if there's an unchallenged Run-DMC or Beastie Boys pick. With the likes of Mobb Deep or the Geto Boys there's really only one consensus contender. From the 00s, maybe What You Know as well? I can't see 99 Problems, Get Ur Freak On or BOB having quite the same impact in this context that they would in a cross-genre best-of-00s poll. But I expect (and hope) to be surprised in all kinds of ways.

I would assume "I Got 5 on It" is in the top 20; it's one of those cases where everyone loves the single, even though few care about other things the act did.

I didn't know what to do with BOB - like, it's amazing but the rapping is totally incidental to its greatness, and I don't even think of it as a rap track so much as ... I don't know what really. I ended up putting it quite high in the end about #13 or so, it was the highest thing that I wasn't juggling as a potential #1.
