Matt pointed me at it and I downloaded it:
http://thirdworlds.net/
and me and the gal like it a lot! Might be a passing fancy but curious what ilxhivemind thinks

lyrics are stone cold stupid but the energy is manic, the production is lo-fi punk shit and the ideas are omnivorously informed and twitching

dash of aphex, little horrorcore, some industrial, some disco... aesthetically it's all over the place and scratches an itch i was not aware i wanted scratched?

My friend and I watched this from forks' inexplicable thread last night and she tried to download the mixtape but it made her browser crash when she used the internet at the same time. She said, "everyone's talking about this on facebook," and I said, " 'everybody'? How can it be everybody? This video only has 21,000 views and it's his most-viewed video," and she said, "okay, not EVERYBODY. Like two or maybe three people posted the video, "and I said, "still, that's pretty impressive when you consider the ratio of 21,000 to the population of the unites states. This is probably gonna get big. Like, indie big, maybe," and she said, "Yeah, maybe."

love this shit. thanks forks.
yeah, mostly about the energy, like he just can't shout loud enough or bang hard enough.
some tasty musical action too. guilotine is a jam. not one sound more than it needs. works those bleeps just perfect.
also digging culture shock, like the flipside to lilb's age of information.

4 weeks pass...

In the video for 'Guillotine' we've noticed MC Ride is careful to wear his seatbelt, adding to the impression that the character he projects isn't someone you want to be sitting beside on a long flight. Almost like he's a good citizen, repressed, buttoned up, conscientious about the rules, but on the verge of going off the deep end. Was this intentional, an oversight, or just good in-car safety?

F: Yes, of course it's intentional. We obviously had the option and foresight to not use a seatbelt, but that misses the point. It is not real - the outside is static, the inside is static, and the seatbelt is fucking static. Everything is static, just eating away at the individual. The material world and many things within it are designed to keep us half-dead, and we're trained to think these things are keeping us safe. We reference the weaponry of fear and our music and vision isn't about being hard or tough, it's about being real and raw, and feeling our shit. We counter with energy, everything is energy.

what i think i mb liked most about ex-military was the sense of having been awake for 50 hrs, or left alone in an abandoned house til you'd gone feral; that semi-conscious, warm, listless, lizard-brain, head-nodding catharsis.

this album feels way more mannered, funnier, but still w/ that aggression: bludgeoning samples, very satisfyingly put together, still a big sense of relief. death grips are a v therapeutic band

I don't understand how can you identify this as "not hip-hop"? I think referencing MC 900 Ft Jesus as a very canny move as this really does slot into that type of weirdo industrial-goth-hop vein that nu-metal/hip-hop hybrids did their damnedest to destroy.

Then again, I've called a whole bunch of bizarre things hip-hop (like "Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors") so maybe that's just one of my default filters.

xp: It is pretty positive for a 2/5 review, I'll give you that.

circa1916, Saturday, 28 April 2012 00:03 (1 year ago) Permalink

idk, looking at this from a undie hip hop pov and expecting flow to ride beats and such is probably the wrong way. feels like more of a noise/hardcore thing to me.

circa1916, Saturday, 28 April 2012 00:07 (1 year ago) Permalink

I like Minor Threat a bit, but there's an obvious physicality to Minor Threat that I don't hear here. I find it difficult to feel rock energy without rock instrumentation, especially drums, but this record doesn't feel like it really has rap energy either, it feels awkwardly slumped between two stools as it is.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Saturday, 28 April 2012 00:14 (1 year ago) Permalink

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Saturday, 28 April 2012 00:16 (1 year ago) Permalink

suidavyvan eht nioj (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 28 April 2012 00:32 (1 year ago) Permalink

agree that it doesn't work terribly well in the way i typically expect from rap, and it definitely isn't rock & roll, but i like the sounds and propulsion and wall-crashing energy. it works just fine for what it is, even if that thing isn't 100% clear.

Choc. Clusterman (contenderizer), Saturday, 28 April 2012 02:02 (1 year ago) Permalink

I can think of a number of words to describe Death Grips, but slumping (awkwardly or otherwise) is not one that generally comes to my mind. I do think that Money Store somehow manages the trick of being simultaneously odder (in that it sounds far less like something I could imagine a major label being into) and also more conventional sounding (if a certain sort of Wire magazine-y IDM thing that they have going on can be called conventional) than Ex-Military (which I absolutely loved.) It's still quite good though and I'm excited to hear the next record which is what supposed to come out in a couple of months?!?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Saturday, 28 April 2012 03:41 (1 year ago) Permalink

it's not even just "riding" the beat from a technical pov that dude can't do, it's like he just goes hammer & tongs at the mindless yelling without even hearing the music around him - his voice bears almost no relation to it at all

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Saturday, 28 April 2012 08:10 (1 year ago) Permalink

I don't think that's true at all! Especially on this one, with the way Ride's vocals are cut up and manipulated to suit each beat,

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Saturday, 28 April 2012 09:33 (1 year ago) Permalink

yeah if there's one thing this album of frenetic Hella dude drumming and an MC screaming every line is missing is energy

I obviously was interested enough to put it on again today in the cold light of sobriety. I'm about halfway through now and it's definitely better when the pace picks up - otherwise I'd say it has force rather than energy, in the way that a bulldozer does. I'm really not a fan of the mid-paced halfstep lope that's employed most of the time, it seems to go against the grain of the urgency in the vocals.

'Hustle Bones' is definitely the best so far.

There's two things that are pretty constant in hip hop that Death Grips lacks. One, even with freaky stuff like Odd Future or Ghetto Boys, there's an implied community, or at least a crew that's got your back. Two, there's a generally a steady BPM. Waka Floka sorta just yells too, but it's steady. I didn't think I was being particularly ganged up on (I've been at least attempting to enjoy it and do enjoy bits of it). xp - pretty sure the majority of schoenberg fans wldn't have much illuminating to offer either. there is no scale of difficulty which you can master and then unlock all music, there is no universal ear, or even a generalist one. 'clunky' & 'basic' are better deployed as compliments than thrown pejoratively.

The Dälek guys should probably be hella (lol) pissed that this is getting as much attention as it is. Because as incredible as Death Grips is, those guys have been working harder and smarter at "quasi-industrial noise-rap" for a decade.

I don't even think they're getting a boost from the Hella connection (Hella was "hip" what, 10 years ago?). I think it's just the blogarchy "roll with the new" vibe. The last three Dälek records were just as good as anything Death Grips did and no one but Europeans and Isis fans are really riding for em in 2012

I mean, these guys basically built their entire career on stutter-stop polyrhythmic flow and they weren't the only ones, and nothing flow-wise on the Death Grips album is further out there or less arhythmic than anything happening on the Shabazz Palaces releases, which I don't think anyone would argue against fitting into hip-hop because the dude doing it used to be in Digable Planets

I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Monday, 30 April 2012 15:17 (1 year ago) Permalink

Was hoping someone would call it out! Just throwing it out there. But I guess my point is that DG breaks two things- being twice out of step is what makes it seem iffy.

bendy, Monday, 30 April 2012 15:33 (1 year ago) Permalink

Those two things are kind of arbitrary? I mean, you can make an argument about hip-hop acts presenting themselves within their music as parts of larger posses and the sense of community that context provides, but it ignores a bunch of stuff that had at least a national profile which was undeniably tied to hip-hop (not only alt/underground stuff like Urban Dance Squad, Dream Warriors and MC 900 Foot Jesus, but mk I Digable Planets).

Also, the rhythm thing just is completely wrong and makes zero sense. I really don't know what the people comparing dude's flow to PMT-era Tricky are actually listening to because it doesn't appear to be either Death Grips release.

I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Monday, 30 April 2012 17:11 (1 year ago) Permalink

(which btw, I'm listening to the first one after a weekend of mainlining Siouxsie and the Banshees instead of Depeche Mode and it's making a lot more sense now, lol)

kinda bullshit if it was just a way to get out a small club tour and re-book it in bigger venues...

how u make money canceling shows?

the backlash to this stuff is kind of surprising, i guess confirms that people are used to and don't care about album delays, are way more pissed if you postpone shows they already bought tickets for/made plans around if there's not, like, some serious health issue or other inarguable explanation

rising acts move sold out shows into bigger venues all the time, without outright cancellations or this kind of fanfare. that would be p weird imo. although this whole thing does seem weird in general.

is it possible that they booked the tour under old management & then when they signed to interscope they decided not to have them go out? i'm not sure if my timeline is off there tho

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:14 (11 months ago) Permalink

epic i think.
moving to a bigger venue would mean they would be getting more cash if it were a door split. If it were a straight up booking fee, they might cancel the whole tour because that's the only way they could contractually get out of doing several small shows. dunno.

― some dude, Wednesday, June 13, 2012 11:39 AM (1 hour ago)

agree that music fans in general get irritated at show cancellations, but another dimension here is death grips are coming up through the underground where project delays are common and frequent, but shows commitments are code-of-honor type stuff. as somebody who books and play shows, I can say that bands who cancel without good cause are viewed as flaky pains in the ass or cavalier primadonnas unconcerned with making other ppl's lives difficult. and this was an entire tour! whiney made the point above, you'd think a guy like zach hill would know better.

if they'd produced some kind of sincere apologetic message or rationale it'd be different but it was like "btw no shows, suck it". frankly, I was psyched to pick up their album the week it dropped but the way they handled this left a bitter taste in my mouth. still haven't bought it, tho I prolly will at some point.

the best way to maintain ownership of your music is to not sell it to a major label in the first place.

especially if you happen to make wholly inaccessible and unmarketable noise rap.

i've always thought the signing was ridiculous, but getting all sourpuss scornful that an 'inaccessible noise rap' band think they are too cool to act professionally just shows up a weird set of priorities/values

except that is no more 'the reality' than label signs a band it doesn't know how to market or handle... we don't even know what happened w/ the site yet. as it stands it's a dick joke & some vitriol, chiding the band "oh if only they'd handled their industry responsibilities more sensibly they cld be on the property ladder now" comes off all hegemonic conservative

but yes i haven't got a problem w/ how this has unfolded - everyone's playing their part properly; i love boners; some good track titles - it's a good time

it's funny because they already canceled a tour to make this fabled TWO ALBUMS IN A YEAR thing happen and it seemed like fans were more pissed about no shows than they were excited about more studio recordings (which made me assume the label were gung ho about the 2nd album coming ASAP). so it's like, build a following and get signed just to rush an album than neither the fans nor the label were chomping at the bit for, in ways that actively annoy both.

i think the point is don't sign to a major to begin with! it's never been easier to not sign with a major label!

they should have just signed to Load or something that made sense then it would have been a boner city extravaganza

farte blanche (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 1 October 2012 23:40 (7 months ago) Permalink

reading this totally in-keeping bit of snottiness as naive/poorly judged completely ignores the image/myth the band have built up, and i can believe they did this in part to reassert their control over that after the cancellation fiasco

jon did you miss the bit where the label wasn't interested in releasing it for another year? Considering they've recorded three albums in the last twelve months, I suspect they'd be able to deliver another one by that point.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:19 (6 months ago) Permalink

Drop them, ahem.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:23 (6 months ago) Permalink

But, uh, tons of bands get signed on the basis of free demos. I'm not sure what your point is? They gave away music that Epic was supposed to be making money off of. I'm not trying to play captain save-a-major here, but it's not hard to understand why they're pissed off about it.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:24 (6 months ago) Permalink

so basically you're confused by the fact that the label would want to throw its full marketing power behind each release, which it basically can't do if the releases are too close together. so then epic is stuck in this position of being like "no, ignore these free releases and pay attention to these official releases" which is absurd. you can't flood the market with a bunch of music and ask people to pay for half of it but not the other half.

call all destroyer, Friday, 2 November 2012 03:24 (6 months ago) Permalink

lots of major label rap artists release mixtapes on the black market, sometimes even without the label's knowledge or explicit permission. but this was never called a mixtape, it was always called an album and was the album they'd promised to the label right up until they put it online. i mean it's a semantic thing but most legal issues are.

some dude, Friday, 2 November 2012 03:25 (6 months ago) Permalink

issue is probably much less that they put out some free music than the obnoxious (figurative and literal) dick-waving the group did about it

some dude, Friday, 2 November 2012 03:26 (6 months ago) Permalink

there's prob another point in there about death grips being marketed to a diff, more album-oriented audience than other rappers who put out mixtapes but i'm not the guy with the knowledge to make it.

call all destroyer, Friday, 2 November 2012 03:27 (6 months ago) Permalink

There is a good argument to be made that this band's general obnoxiousness is one of their more marketable assets.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:32 (6 months ago) Permalink

oh yeah absolutely. i'm just saying there IS a precedent for that kind of thing but they weren't following it musically or businesswise. (xpost)

Sure, but this only matters if you believe that this was 1) replace another record that Epic could have made money off or 2) that this was going to so saturate the Death Grips that no one would want another Death Grips in which case you probably made a mistake signing them anyway.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:35 (6 months ago) Permalink

eh to me it's all good to fuck shit up on an indie level, but if you do the whole major label gamble you may as well jump through their hoops, because there's no real benefit to doing it for a few months in a self-sabotaging way other than impressing whatever anti-corporate tightasses are out there still thinking this is how you 'fight the power'

some dude, Friday, 2 November 2012 03:37 (6 months ago) Permalink

Sure, but this only matters if you believe that this was 1) replace another record that Epic could have made money off or 2) that this was going to so saturate the Death Grips that no one would want another Death Grips in which case you probably made a mistake signing them anyway.

i'm not sure why you find the idea of spacing out releases so weird? my favorite band on the planet would probably tire me out if they released two records a year.

call all destroyer, Friday, 2 November 2012 03:41 (6 months ago) Permalink

or to put it another way, epic's only goal is to sell as much death grips as possible; this is made considerably more challenging if they don't control the flow of death grips material.

call all destroyer, Friday, 2 November 2012 03:42 (6 months ago) Permalink

Why do you find the idea of releasing a mess of stuff weird? Some of my favorites seem to have no problem releasing two or three records a year, etc.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:44 (6 months ago) Permalink

Also, iirc, this actually was the exact album the band had been promoting all year and I'm sure Epic was planning on releasing it. They'd mentioned this one by name when they signed to Epic.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:45 (6 months ago) Permalink

the whole thing of "we're putting out two albums this year! even if it means canceling a tour we already booked!" was just bizarre to begin with. the only way this would all make sense to me is if it turned out that the label made them stay off the road and finish the album and then was like 'actually we don't need it til next year after all.'

some dude, Friday, 2 November 2012 03:46 (6 months ago) Permalink

xxxp you are aware that Death Grips basically has made videos for like every single song on their album? I think it's pretty hard to imagine a world where Epic was going to be able "control the flow" and not sure again why they'd be interested in that. Again both Epic and Death Grips motives here are kinda opaque. I'm not clear (other than money for DG) what either was expecting to get out of this relationship.

Anyway, I do like the alternate covers that have popped up online, besides the band sanctioned one with the "suck my dick" socks. There's, uh, the female equivalent of the cover. But this is the one I gave the album for my iPod:

i think epic just wanted to be able to release death grips albums on a schedule by which they'd be in a position to market and promote them. if you find that opaque i don't know what to tell you.

xxxp again I find Epic's motives for signing DG in the first place opaque. I understand their motive for dropping them. I find that motive weird given who Death Grips is and how I would figure you would try to market them, but I have no problem comprehending it.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:55 (6 months ago) Permalink

Or to be more clear I find people overly protective of the value of the music of a band who releases a bunch of stuff for free seems to me to be kinda weird. Like maybe you shoulda thought of that before you signed them? I don't know.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:57 (6 months ago) Permalink

lots of artists release a bunch of music for free AND THEN get signed and focus on selling it. that's kind of the standard these days, in fact.

Epic's profit motivations notwithstanding, it's seems most likely that Death Grips breached their contract and then were assholes about it. No shortage of off-contract mixtapes/minor releases being independently offered by musicians under contract, but you typically should OK it with the label first, no?

if they don't need/want any marketing support, and they don't need a recording budget (i'm pretty sure they have their own studio setup), it does seem pretty stupid to sign to a major label. maybe they got an advance to live on while making records, but how do they expect to pay that back if they don't deliver the record?

Hill talks in a quiet, slow-to-unravel Sacramento drawl. Burnett's voice — on the very infrequent occasions when he does speak with a tape recorder running — is even quieter. "If you look at that and all you see is a dick, I don't really have anything to say, pretty much," Burnett murmurs about the photo that ultimately became the album art for their corrosive, cyber-grinding, electroshock scream-therapy sesh NO LOVE DEEP WEB. "I looked at it and said, 'This is a great photo, and I'd love for this to be the album cover.'" Both Burnett and Hill are reserved, soft-spoken, maybe a little shy, hopelessly insular, and they don't exactly look strangers in the eye when they walk down the street. Most importantly, the men of Death Grips are serious as cancer about making their art.

o get into the next level of the game, Hill started taking some inspiration from his younger brother, a career gamer. In one of their long, confiding conversations, Hill talked about The Book of Five Rings, a 17th-century text of philosophy and strategy from a Japanese swordsman. His brother countered with some techniques used in role-playing-game staple Magic: The Gathering. There are three types of decks in Magic: the speedy offensive of the Aggro deck, the deus ex machina checkmates of the Combo deck, and the slow-and-steady game of the Control deck.

"We perceive that this record label is running a game, right?" says Hill. "The Control deck is the shit because, basically, you un-summon people's magic by using their own magic against them. It's totally control; you put yourself in the same place as the other person, so they have nothing on you, it's like an illusion. Redirection of power and putting yourself in the environments these other people are in — it creates a chaos element to it. We started thinking about that in the sense of where we were as a band."

It would have been shitty for the label to leak a record and cancel a tour without consulting the band first. The whole part of them going back to the label to try and talk about the second album - after they have dropped out of touring/promoting in the least respectful way possible almost has a George Costanza feel to it. Quitting a job and then going back to work the next monday hoping the boss will somehow just forget that you called them a pinhead.

at least we can agree on one thing

as a result of this whole thing I keep mentally referring back to the image of MC Ride trying to look psycho-bad while wearing a seatbelt

The more i read about it all it sounds less like 'sticking it to the man' and more like 'flaking out on everyone and repeatedly shooting yourself in the foot'.

i kindof feel like exactly these things that are being used itt to describe these guys as dicks are exactly why they are good. lack of responsibility. bailing out on the debts they said they would pay. its cathartic and refreshing. the deal was not the deal i thought it was. the fine print was unreadable. i wanted the money but not the job. this is how i feel, bypassing the beaurocracies that displace every responsibility. don't phone in sick because its a busy shift. i don't fucking care. its like epic records. standing on the balcony. i wish i could do that. i still have to fucking wait tables every night. i'm glad somebody can. standing teetering on the edge. two fingers. tie the cord, kick the chair and you're dead. if i call in sick its my fucking coworkers that take the brunt. this is it, the production of innocence. my boss is my best friend. we're all victims. there's something to be said for it. the album is so good as well. all uncontainable id. no love. deep web. wrapped up so tight i can't breath. i need something that punctures it. interrupts these notions of responsibility that are predicated on this particular handshake. i hope i can pay my rent this month.

I sort of agree with plax's post; I think the self-involved irresponsibility fuels a lot of what makes their music awesome. I'd never want to do business with them or even really try to see them live because I'd be convinced they would flake out and not show up with no warning but I've enjoyed all three albums immensely.

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Monday, 10 December 2012 15:30 (5 months ago) Permalink

yeah, getting all "I see through their pyrrhic immaturity" about death grips antics misses something fundamental (or states the blatently obvious) about a band whose first record started with a charlie manson sample.

CGI fridays (Edward III), Monday, 10 December 2012 15:50 (5 months ago) Permalink
