Polls weak like clock radio speakers - VOTING THREAD for the ALL TIME RAP MUSIC POLL OF THE GODS (poll ends 25 May 2011)

Dunno if it is me or ilm but can someone start a thread for me? It is the rap music poll thread and for the text I would like it to be:

50 votes for singles, 50 votes for albums. You can vote for less than that if you want but why would you want to?

Please send your ballots in by saying whether a list is TRACKS or ALBUMS in the Artist - Track or Album format they are in the list. Please say whether your list is ordered or not.

Points will be awarded as earlier stated, 60 for #1 and then 49 for #2, 48 for #3 etc. If you vote for less than the 50 for either tracks or singles, it will be with this same formula from your #1. If you are not into ranking, there is also an option which exists of having a 60 point #1 and 49 unranked other votes for 25 points each but please clearly state that you are going for this if you want it in your email. I'm keeping #1 votes just because it is something I think adds to ilx polls, seeing what is everyone's FAVOURITE of whatever is being polled.

Voting will end 25/05/11 at midnight Englisher time.

Vote by emailing me at samuelpooley @ gmail.com or by hitting me up on the webmail. Please say who you are on ilx :D

And lastly, the lists. As well as the following nominations lists, you are welcome to choose from the frankly amazing ego trip lists of Singles and Albums

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 April 2011 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't really understand what makes that stand out lex compared to other luda or twista tracks. In fact it even feels like a rehash of something off a Luda record. I mean its cool but its not exactly TROY or THE MESSAGE or KICK IN THE DOOR

The Roots- Do You Want More? is missing--it was on the Ego Trip lists.

President Keyes, Monday, 25 April 2011 09:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Or did we not include the Ego Trip stuff?--because Souls of Mischief- '93 til Infinity (album) is also missing.

President Keyes, Monday, 25 April 2011 09:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I guess I mis-read the intro and assumed the Ego Trip lists were incorporated with the nominations. Is there a link to the full ET list?

President Keyes, Monday, 25 April 2011 10:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Some really big songs we forgot to nominate: No BDP- "My Philosophy" for instance. No Common- "I Used to Love H.E.R."

I'm pretty sure I saw both of the Crooklyn Dodgers songs nominated and only "The Return" is here.

President Keyes, Monday, 25 April 2011 10:44 (thirteen years ago) link

'my philosophy' and 'i used to love h.e.r' are both on the ego trip list

the square root of minus one is i something uhh (tpp), Monday, 25 April 2011 12:11 (thirteen years ago) link

(but really if you don't have the 'book of rap lists' buy it right away it's so amazing)

the square root of minus one is i something uhh (tpp), Monday, 25 April 2011 12:13 (thirteen years ago) link

I wish I'd nominated YoYoYoYoYoYo.

PG Harpy (Doran), Monday, 25 April 2011 12:15 (thirteen years ago) link

actually the ego trip album lists from 91-98 are missing from that website

the square root of minus one is i something uhh (tpp), Monday, 25 April 2011 12:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Well vote like they are there. I'm not exactly going to do one if you vote for Common (or even Spank Rock). Actually, if you vote Finding Forever I am going to sb you.

I don't really understand what makes that stand out lex compared to other luda or twista tracks. In fact it even feels like a rehash of something off a Luda record. I mean its cool but its not exactly TROY or THE MESSAGE or KICK IN THE DOOR

i love "RPM" but i mean the thing you have to understand in that in Lexworld, any song with female vocals is inherently better than any similar song with only male vocals

opposite for me -- wasn't too hard to sort out my personal canon of top 50 rap LPs but narrowing down 50 tracks out of all the thousands of songs i've loved felt impossible.

some dude, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

For me, rap is much more a singles genre (is that rockist? who cares.) and, as such, I have a much firmer grasp on which songs have meant the most to me over the last 25 years or so. As for albums, I really only have a total of 20 or 25 albums that I return to time after time and stretching that list out to 50 (which I may not even end up doing) is going to be more of a task.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 20:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I've pretty much decided my Top 50s but I'm enjoying listening to all the nominations so much that I'm going to hold off submitting for a while yet. I've listened to nothing but hip hop since Sunday - this poll is a total joy.

My ballots were all over the place, but mostly mainstream and typically rockist and definitely stopped clock-ish.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 09:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Even though it was no conscious choice, I suspected my ballots would show how much of an 90s rap guy I am. And indeed, 13 of my top 20 tracks are from the nineties... But surprisingly enough, 5 of my top 10 albums are from the 00s, including #1 and #2.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 09:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I've finally listened to every single nominated track that's on Spotify. Useful for clarifying which MCs and producers I really don't have time for as well as for introducing me to so many brilliant tracks I missed. My bias towards 1988-1997 is ridiculous, it seems.

Number None, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 11:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, but looks like the name of the poll has changed from "hip hop poll" to "rap poll" since then.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 11:16 (thirteen years ago) link

oh come on, rap and hip-hop are exactly the same thing even if we have all heard 6000 krs one rants on the subject.

Number None, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 11:26 (thirteen years ago) link

oh come on, rap and hip-hop are exactly the same thing even if we have all heard 6000 krs one rants on the subject.

I've no political/purist opinion on the matter, but I still think it'd be weird to call music without rapping "rap". Generally I prefer to use the word "rap" (because I don't want to associate myself with the fundamentalists who distinguish "real hip hop" from "commercial rap" or whatever) when talking about the music, but when it comes to the instrumental stuff I say "instrumental hip hop", or just "hip hop", since "instrumental hip hop" is a retronym.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 12:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry about the academic nitpicking, I just finished my thesis on masculinity in Finnish rap, so I've been kinda forced to think about issues of terminology, such as this one.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 12:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Ok well we can accept that when I made the thread I wasn't thinking this would be an issue and have no problem with people voting for instrumental/electro rap records and that the title wasn't meant as a subliminal way to stop people participating or voting if they primarily like this part of hip-hop?

It may however have something to do with deej getting pissy about my use of hip-hop/rap instead of just rap and deciding to go with just 'rap' as an all encompassing term because i still respect what dude thinks? even if he hasen't yet voted (grrr...)

<3 <3 <3 <3 Tuomas

re slow voting: I didn't have time to read the noms thread when I found it, a month old, and certainly didn;t have time to nom anything [ :( :( ]

I've copied the noms list and slashed out everything I don't want to consider, but it will take at least HOURS to whittle down further, and I have not had time to do so in between bits of work, at work, where we are three weeks behind schedule and have been all year. a hoy hoy is unemployed, right? this shit is not as easy as we'd like it to be.

also, it is insane to do TRACKS and ALBUMS in one poll. spread that shit out. that makes it waaaaaay harder for voters.

So I can teach the young

this poll btw came out of lots of people complaining about the goon vote for the 2010 rap poll and plenty of people not knowing where to start when it comes to listening to the genre. sure hip-hop is an epic genre but it wasn't that long ago johnny fever (i think?) did a poll of the 20th century. rap music has only been around for a third as long and no-one had real trouble participating in that poll, so why should 79-11 suddenly be such a hopeless cause?

Agree that people shouldn't worry about listening to everything on the list. You don't have to be a rap scholar, just VOTE for the shit you already LOVE. This isn't Rolling Stone's Most Important Rap Albums poll. Personally, my lists skew pretty recent because I was born in 1984 and never really got super heavy into the "classic" pre-1992 foundational stuff. Ha, I had the same experience. Leapt up my ballot - can't believe I'd never heard it all the way through before.

Obviously you don't have to work through the noms list - impossible with albums and time-consuming with tracks (though quicker with Spotify than YouTube). But it was something I'd wanted to do for so long - check out all those records that other people loved and I'd never gotten around to. I ended up not only with tons of great discoveries but a much clearer understanding of what I look for in hip hop - what thrills me, what leaves me cold. For Britishers and other Europeans, I will at some point (probably in a week or two) attempt to do a Spotify playlist of tracks. If only there was a Spotify API...

Question for the patrons:

SpottieOttieDopaliscious is my favorite track ever and I am torn on whether to give it a vote or not. Thing is, I don't really feel like its even a "rap" or "hip-hop" song, kind of a hard song to classify tbf. I don't want it to get the gas-face like Donuts/Endtroducing for not fitting in the fold.

Thoughts?

somebody nommed "sabotage" so it seems to be a free-for-all, do whatcha like

no serenade no fire brigade just a trypophobia (Edward III), Monday, 6 June 2011 15:37 (thirteen years ago) link

I want to say it again: instrumental hip hop was included in this poll right from the nomination process, the reason people seem to be confused is that Sam changed the name of the poll from "hip hop" to "rap" between the nomination and the voting thread. But it would be silly to clain Endtroducing and Donuts are not in the same genre as all the other albums in the top 100; where else would they belong?

That said, "SpottieOttieDopaliscious" is indeed a hard to categorize. Gil Scott-Heron's "Revolution Will Not Be Televised" was also nommed, if you think that one qualifies, then surely the Outkast tune does too. Personally, I don't think you can call "Revolution..." hip hop, because hip hop didn't exist when it came out, but "Spottie..." is hip hop, because it was released on a hip hop album by a hip hop act. It's all in the context.

Tuomas, Monday, 6 June 2011 15:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Alright, am voting for it.

My display name seems to get to people.

can someone make a gif of sunglasses lowering over the change of the name of the poll so that Tuomas can deal with it already and let it go

Increasingly I want to change my ballot. When's the final drop-dead cut-off, a hoy hoy?

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 6 June 2011 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah I don't really understand how there's any question about whether a rap song on a rap album by a rap duo that features rapping is rap or not.

metally ill (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 6 June 2011 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link

like, it's not some instrumental drum n bass remix of a jazz standard lol

Where is the line between spoken word and rapping? idk. I've always considered it a rap song but have known friends/acquaintances that didn't, etc.

sorry i was being a little mean, it doesn't really matter. i personally don't think having your main display name as a song title is a good look but that's really just because i feel like people should put across their identity in some way that isn't just their musical taste.

Looking forward to the tracks rollout. Moreso than with albums I think personal taste is idiosyncratic and likely to diverge from the canon. I can picture a consensus top 20 but the bottom half of the list is anybody's guess. One-hit wonders are likely to rise higher than major artists with a dozen tracks in contention.

We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Monday, 6 June 2011 19:25 (thirteen years ago) link

^^agree about the one-hit wonder likelehood

like 4000 times. it starts tomorrow.

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Monday, 6 June 2011 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

so i have to email you by the end of today?

gr8080, Monday, 6 June 2011 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

So, you are going to do 20 tracks a day? Does that seem kind of heavy to anyone else? I think with tracks there is going to be more discovery/re-discovery and people actually taking the time to listen and judge and reply. 10 a day might be more manageable although that would take nearly 2 weeks to roll it all out, which might get old, idk. I don't really care, I'll be involved either way, just throwing it out there.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 6 June 2011 22:27 (thirteen years ago) link

*25 tracks a day

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 6 June 2011 22:27 (thirteen years ago) link

did anybody else end up wanting a mixtape of their ballot

no serenade no fire brigade just a trypophobia (Edward III), Monday, 6 June 2011 22:29 (thirteen years ago) link

spottie - the 25 thing is because

1. i had to work yesterday and saturday so i had no time to tally until today.

2. no-one but sports fans check ilx on weekends.

3. week long polls are what ilx is used to, can't be fucked w/ ppl bitching for something different happening

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Monday, 6 June 2011 22:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Cool, no problem. Thanks again for doing all this.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 6 June 2011 22:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I think a two-week rollout would be great for the engendering-discussion reasons suggested above fwiw

all cats are gay (sic), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:00 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe if we can get some more people behind it. btw who did those sweet pictures to go with the 2010 poll? and would you be up for getting up on like the top 50 or something?

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:37 (thirteen years ago) link

most of the tracks would be singles, so you can just use single covers and put numbers on them?

also if yr invoking old ILX polls, a longer roll-out would give you time to pull cool quotes from ILX history for the results...

all cats are gay (sic), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:44 (thirteen years ago) link

BTW was there ever the thread made with just the 2010 pictures so they could be viewed full-size?

all cats are gay (sic), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 00:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Ehh...I think a 2-week long poll will amount to a 10000+ post thread...

as much fun as i had doing those pics they take a long time & i'm not sure if i have the energy -- maybe this weekend if i'm free i'll send you an email & you can hit me w/ the top 10 or something

I'd offer (I make nice pics!), but I don't want the results spoiled for me.

Ok guys my internet cacked out last night so I was left with about 20 left to input, plus sarge's i guess. also have a haircut at 11.

Not to be a pain in the arse, but I was kind of counting on this being over this Friday so I could roll out the Pavement poll on Monday. There will definitely be some overlap between the two re: readers.
