Kitchens Of Distinction -- S&D//POO/C or D?

I've heard that all their albums are out of print, so ideally I should greedily grab whatever crosses my path ... But anyway, I may be faced with the opportunity to buy Love Is Hell, The Death Of Cool or Cowboys And Aliens tomorrow: please, mr. postpunk, you decide for me.

What? No STRANGE FREE WORLD for you?

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 18:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

All of them. And please don't forget Strange Free World either. ;-)

If you have to pick absolutely only one to start with, I'd actually go with Strange Free World, if only because once you realize how great that is, The Death of Cool then gives you the joy of listening to something even better. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 18:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

well it would have to be the one with 3rd time we opened the capsule on, i've just realised i own nothing other than that song!

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 28 August 2002 20:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

have to agree with ned, you need all four albums. love is hell is the best of the three you listed though, primal emotions, not as fancy with the guitar effects as on the later albums but just splendid all the way through. strange free world is the best album though, shimmer and poetry.

keith, Wednesday, 28 August 2002 22:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Love IS Hell is definitly the one to get, and the Elephantine EP if you can find it. I only ever saw a copy once and it was ruined.

R E V I V E

Just picked up the new KoD compilation, Capsule: The Best of KOD: 1988-94 which features a smattering of tracks and a bonus disc of demos, live tracks, acoustic tracks and remixes.

Theirs is really kinda a tragic story when you think about it. Four great albums, none of them big sellers. Still, the music here is strikingly emotive, and Julian Swales on guitar at his peak was really the perfect fusion of Dave Gedge and Robin Guthrie.

My favorite track off The Death of Cool, the gorgeously simple "Smiling" is criminally absent here.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 April 2003 09:54 (twenty years ago) link

I listened to The Death Of Cool the other day and was struck again by how great "Smiling" is - odd that it's buried at the end of the album. Their best straight pop song? (I'm not sure if "The Third Time We Opened The Capsule" counts).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 26 April 2003 11:43 (twenty years ago) link

"Smiling" is a gorgeous beaut, that's for sure. I believe they tried to make it a single in America (in the UK the singles were "Breathing Fear" and "When in Heaven").

A bonus disc, eh? Time for me to seek this out. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 26 April 2003 14:35 (twenty years ago) link

it was the radio single but the only video i ever saw from 'death of cool' was '4 men'. julian swales made more beautiful noise with his guitar than anyone else ever.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 26 April 2003 15:37 (twenty years ago) link

Not a great amount of rare stuff on the bonus disc - most of it is B-sides. As far as I can tell (I didn't pay too much attention after the second album, which I thought was slightly disappointing), the only unreleased things are the original mix of "Sand on Fire" and acoustic versions of "Hammer", "Mad as Snow", "Here Come the Swans" and "What Happens Now?". May have to rethink my disappointment after listening to the album this afternoon - I've dug "Love is Hell" and "Strange Free World" out of the attic (vinyl, of course).

Andrew Norman, Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:25 (twenty years ago) link

Can this thread be as good a place as any for all of us KOD-holics to put all of our CD-singles, rarities on the table and create some kind of grand homemade compilation for all of us? I've been dying for one.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 26 April 2003 22:54 (twenty years ago) link

Alex - where'd you buy it? just curious

well it would have to be the one with 3rd time we opened the capsule on, i've just realised i own nothing other than that song!

This is such a great post. I stared at it for like five minutes.

I actually looked for this today and couldn't find it, which actively pissed me off. I was also looking for the new Mensen album, and couldn't find that, so I'm just going to assume Tower Records is conspiring against me.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 02:58 (twenty years ago) link

I've got a bit of a homemade comp together with a lot of the B-sides and things, DB -- reminds me that I have a disc I need to send to Mr. Noodles. So I'm sure we can arrange something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 April 2003 03:02 (twenty years ago) link

It's all really good until the vocals come in. I really can't take the guys' voice. But Julian Swales is one top flight mothefucker, probably one of my top influences.

I got it at REBEL REBEL over on the Western end of Bleeker Street (just beyond 7th Avenue). I may have picked out the last one, I believe. Sorry. I suck like that.

Tower had 3 copies in stock at the Village store (4th & Broadway) on Friday - check the Imports endcap at the middle of the main (pop) floor. lots of other good stuff there, too.

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 27 April 2003 15:35 (twenty years ago) link

But do either of those stores have the new Mensen? I'm more worried about that.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:25 (twenty years ago) link

Can't say I'm familiar with Mensen, so m'afraid I can't weigh in on that one.

working on it - thanks for the tip Ally

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 27 April 2003 18:50 (twenty years ago) link

I can't find it anywhere on Kazaa, but this is really expected because finding things on Kazaa is kind of like finding things in my living room, i.e. completely impossible. Wheeler tipped me off to it yesterday, and claimed it was actually out but it's nowhere to be found. I was shocked as hell; I assumed those girls disappeared into the Norwegian wilderness or something. Alex, they're fantastic if kind of silly.

Oh, and Tower has now COMPLETELY REMOVED any sign of the existance of KoD, much less a compilation.

I have nothing else to complain about from Tower/Kazaa for today. Thank you for listening.

Oh, you've noticed it too? It's extraordinarily irritating. I've been in Best Buys with better selection, it's completely peculiar. Speaking of which, they're opening a Best Buy on 86th & Lex--are there any other in the city? They're good for rebuilding my stolen "canon" albums, since their cds are like $4.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 22:03 (twenty years ago) link

you know, i have all of the albums (yes, even the last one which i bought for $2), and i've never been able to really get into any of them except love is hell, which i love(d...haven't listened to it in a while.)

Forget the compilation CD. Where can I find any KoD in New York? I've asked at Mondo Kim's. Zilch. I know they're out of print, but there's got to be something...

justin s., Monday, 28 April 2003 06:12 (twenty years ago) link

www.stephenhero.co.uk is the site for Patrick's current nom-de-guerre, and according to the CD a KoD site should also be there (currently nonexistent, though). One Little Indian has reissued all the albums at mid-price, and the compilation itself was only eleven quid in HMV. Second disc is a bit disappointing - no "Elephantine" ("Elephantiny", though), the four acoustic versions are cack, and there are a few uninspired instrumentals. Why include "Margaret's Injection" (one of the most ill-advised attempts at a political song ever) and omit "Anvil Dub"?

Andrew Norman, Monday, 28 April 2003 11:15 (twenty years ago) link

West Village. Go to Record Runner and Rebel Rebel.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 28 April 2003 11:18 (twenty years ago) link

So, is it all the talk about Interpol allegedly ripping the Kitchens that has made all KOD absent in NYC? Or you seriously can't find any? That's absurd, as I figure ANY used CD store in the country has at least one copy of every CD for mere bucks a pop.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:54 (twenty years ago) link

heh, drive to suburban pennsylvania. i paid no more than $5 per for each. (i found my copy of strange free world at the goodwill for chrissakes.)

Haha I like the fact that any question about New York so far on this thread has been answered immediately by Alex, I was just going to ask where a pile more stores were and was like, you know, he's not bloody 411 for fuck's sake. "Does Rebel Rebel have blah blah blah?" I'm just going to get off my ass and go down there, I guess, instead of sleeping all weekend.

REVIVE

In haplessly furrowing my brow, thinking of what to cover for an impending selection for The New Yorker's "Nightlife" section, I couldn't help noticing that uber-meh nightclub, Satalia (37 W.26th street) is playing host to an act dubbed FRUIT on July 21. Could this be that same Fruit that Patrick of the KoD started? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Anyone dig those Stephen Hero records? I got the first and liked it ok but didn't really follow up.

And as a relative newcomer to this board I must say this thread give me a great deal of pleasure. One of the things in life that makes me happiest is playing KoD for people, esp Death of Cool which is so, so, so, so sublime...

Angsty, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Good on yer, sir. I should dig that out again tonight. (It also helps I've actually been to Tooting Broadway Station now.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I am jealous of you Ned. God give me god to forgive me.
Ok, maybe jealous is slightly over the top but I love how that song ties those grand emotions to that one very specific and peculiar sounding place.

Angsty, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I dug out The Death of Cool yesterday after noticing that there's a track on the new Tracey Thorn album called ... I think it was "By Picadilly Station I Lay Down and Wept." (I can remember nothing about the play -- or was it a poem? -- whose title originates this stuff.)

nabisco, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:53 (seventeen years ago) link

There was a over wrough novel by Elizabeth Smart called By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept, very intense and hyper emotional. It's kind of interesting but also kind of embarassing. I think it was a Morrisey fave as well.
I'm also curious about the new Tracey Thorn.

Angsty, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Right, that's the one. Funny that I've only seen British people making the reference -- I suppose because it's about the (English) George Barker? It'd seem to have some referential currency there that it just does here (hahaha possibly on the grounds that we IGNORE ALL CANADIANS).

nabisco, Thursday, 29 March 2007 18:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Not much love for this great band, huh? Their final album. _Cowboy & Aliens_, was almost as good as _Death Of Cool_. You could probably create a much better best-of from post-KoD than post-Chameleons. And I lurv the Chameleons.

Mr. Odd, Thursday, 29 March 2007 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I was a bit divided on Cowboys & Aliens when I first heard it. I thought half was brilliant and half pretty bad. I think it had a lot to do with the production. I'm going to give it another listen when I go home tonight and this time I'll not skip the tracks I think I don't like.
I guess the lack of love must be in large part down to the whole "gay thing," because they really were pretty commercial in a way. Which is really depressing.

Angsty, Thursday, 29 March 2007 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Great, GREAT band. My g/f has been revising for exams recently so she just randomly pulls CDs off the shelves for background music, including Cowboys & Aliens at the weekend. I got back in from an errand and she proclaimed it "very good", high praise indeed. Capsule has kept popping up on my mp3 player recently too, reminding me of how spectacular Mad As Snow is too. Shame they didn't put the "proper" version of Elephantine on it though...

Very interesting little article about Patrick's return to medicine below, I don't think it's been linked to from ILM before, but probably one for fans only...

weird that this got bumped; I just bought the two-CD best-of thing last week. no prior exposure to these guys, and I haven't really given it an in-depth listen, but so far I am really liking what I've heard (which basically amounts to "The Third Time We Opened The Capsule" 50 times on repeat).

Wow, thanks for that article link, Bill -- it's great to hear he is doing well.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 30 March 2007 13:33 (seventeen years ago) link

He seems to keep himself quite busy!
The Stephen Hero site has the whole Fruit album for download, it isn't half bad. It's no KoD mind you but still, he has charm in abundance.

Angsty, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

vast rofflage at the spinal tap pic!

i'm almost tempted to e-mail him, but that would be very sad. i shall settle for saying that i loved this band like i have loved perhaps no other, and although i don't listen to them that much any more, it's only because i don't think i could bear the avalanche of long-forgotten (and in many cases deeply embarrassing) emotion it might unleash :)

i have the fruit album somewhere. "fucking relationship" was a big favourite of mine and byebyepride's circa 1996. or was it 1997? i forget.

The first 2500 copies of the set came with a second disc of B-sides and radio-session versions, several of which wouldn't be undeserving of first-disc placement -- see the alternately dreary and blissful storms of "Glittery Dust," and the anti-Thatcher "Margaret's Injection," in particular, along with the 12" (albeit inferior) version of "4 Men."

Doubtless the KoD fans here have already picked up on the surprising amount of live footage that's on youtube, but may as well link just in case. I like to think it's a measure of the love for them that still exists that people lugged video cameras to gigs back in the '90s and are now uploading that footage years later. I went to this show in Brum, so it's extra weird to find it again, and although you can't see much you can *hear* everything:

They did random shows in this vein under the Toilets of Destruction name in London every so often -- I remember hearing about them at the time. What's nice is hearing how clearly they all become Kitchens songs thanks to the tone of Julian's guitars in particular!

So I knew absolutely nothing about these guys, had only heard the name a couple times before and, for some reason, had a vague notion that they were most post-punk than shoegaze. Anyway, happened across a $1.99 copy of The Death of Cool and, remembering it being on Ned's 90s list, grabbed it without another thought. OH MY GOD. Fantastic discovery, must find more.

listening to the shimmer in the outro of 'blue pedal' just now, it's like a second sun. i only saw them live twice. i still remember the first show most with kingmaker and bleach and they played shiver, mad as the snow and polaroids consecutively and it was the most beautiful thing ever. what an amazing band.

"Strange Free World" is just utterly epic - I played it driving home from a music festival and I was pushing 90 before I knew it. "Drive That Fast" indeed!

"kitchens of destruction" - reading this, the first thing that popped into my head was the phrase being sung to the tune of "symphony of destruction" by megadeth

Awesome, thanks! Oddly enough, someone recently posted a YT clip of theirs on my FB wall out of the blue & I've spent several hours revisiting their records in the last two days. Sadly, I never got to see them live, which is really too bad b/c I think Julian Swales is brilliant guitarist (& overlooked!) - maybe not quite on par w/ Kev, but certainly in keeping w/ the best the second-tier of 90s stompbox dudes like Nick McCabe, Adam Franklin & the Ride guys. Friends who saw them have confirmed that Swales had such masterful control of his reverb/delay that you'd swear there were three or four guitarists playing at any given time.

Death of Cool & Strange Free World are both stone cold classics imo & on my shortlist for best albums of the 90s. Cowboys and Aliens was not quite on that level, but is underrated, I feel. Sand on Fire is a total jam & must have sounded FANTASTIC when performed. Could they maybe get back together and slog it around for those of us who missed them the first time around? I honestly know nothing of how they ended up parting ways..

Strange Free World sound as good, if not better, today than it did 22 years ago. A brilliant and hugely underrated band.

Well now this is interesting -- according to recent posts on Patrick Fitzgerald's website:

http://stephenheroband.wordpress.com/

He and Julian Swales are working on a new album, and it looks like they're thinking about reviving the Kitchens of Distinction name for it if a Facebook comment was any indication. Perhaps not, we'll have to see. Here's the most recent blogpost:

Very close to mixing now. 10 new songs recorded with Julian playing guitar and me playing guitar and singing and there’s bass and strings and drums and flutes and oboes and trumpets and tambourines and weird samples and swearing and not swearing and songs that sound old and songs that sound nothing like what we’ve done before and a soprano’s ahhs and the kitchen sink.

Now what to call the thing and in what format to release it?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:08 (eleven years ago) link

Wow.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

God, what it would be to have some of that old Kitchens magic back; was listening to them on the long drive back from Cromer to Manchester yesterday, with the sun shining and distant wind farms spinning they sounded better than ever. I don't remember enough about the original split to know if there was any acrimony which might have prevented Dan's involvement with this? From the blog it looks like it's been a slow germination of work with Julian again anyway. Pretty exciting tbh :)

We have some news:

https://www.facebook.com/events/444166695621895/permalink/534977803207450/

we are delighted to announce that the fifth KITCHENS OF DISTINCTION recording will be released later this year through the 3 LOOP MUSIC label so please head over to their Facebook page to hear all the latest about the band's new home. If you have any questions about the release - the format/s, the release date, merchandise, etc - then please direct them to the lovely folks over there from now on. It's hoped to be a Digital/CD/Vinyl release, with a possible September/October release date, and a full merchandise range but you'll hear all the finer details from the record label as and when they have them. Julian has expressed a desire to not play live and the health of yours truly is, as most of you know, often too fragile to make any firm commitments so no more questions about live shows please but if we are lucky enough to get any radio sessions then you will be the first to know.

I've been playing them a ton the past month; in fact, I sometimes find myself in a mood where they are the only band I want to listen to. Can't wait to get new material from them. Too bad no live shows, but it's unlikely they would have come stateside anyway I'm guessing.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 13:04 (ten years ago) link

Roll on the autumn! Shame that they won't be touring, but clearly very good reasons for them not to be out on the road; I'd be surprised if they don't get some radio session offers, can imagine at least a couple of shows on 6 Music would snap them up for these.

trippin' on brostep beats (NickB), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 16:52 (ten years ago) link

Indeed! Reminded me of "Sand on Fire." And apparently intentionally Bowieish given the lyrics and the paraphrase from Patrick that Lamacq gave.

Given it a few listens since yesterday, it feels so good to just have them back together again. Def feeling the Bowie/Suede vibe and especially love the final "staring at the record sleeves..." part. CD preordered :)

adam, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 19:41 (ten years ago) link

It's very good indeed -- sorry, thought I had posted on it here already. Very much a maturer band lyrically/sonically but it's still undeniably them, and the fact that they come roaring out of the gate with the first song is a good thing.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 19:43 (ten years ago) link

I've been giving Folly a few listens this week and am a bit on the fence so far, but I often take a while to really appreciate things. Definitely a few standouts, including "Oak Tree" and "Extravagance" but the one that really gives me the old-school KoD neck prickles is "I Wish It Would Snow", absolutely gorgeous.

The Lost Girls album finally came out! Cherry Red just released it with a bonus disc and it's damn good. Heidi Berry's vocals often bring to mind Sandy Denny and Linda Thompson and the addition of Patrick's sensibilities and early sampling / programming is very compelling.

Anyone get the new box set? Unfortunately it seems to be missing "White Horses" and on Love Is Hell "Prize" has skipping on it, along with booklet printing errors according to some reviewers.

It's only the One Little Indian stuff so it doesn't have some singles.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 15 May 2017 22:46 (six years ago) link

Yeah the B-sides comp was slightly screwed up, so no "White Horses" (or "What We Really Wanted to Do," IIRC). My girlfriend, also a huge fan, ordered it -- it's nice, glitches aside, but the only tracks I didn't have were the radio sessions.

Patrick F was on the Tom Robinson show the other night -- great career-overview of an interview, well worth a listen

I'm game for everything Patrick is involved with. He's just released the second Oskar's Drum album with Yves Altana, it's very dark and heavy:

The first one's very good too though not as immediate as this one. Frankly, I like these much more than the Kitchens comeback album "Folly".
