I really like the title track, best thing on Night Slugs so far by a considerable margin. I'd hardly describe it as "opulent" though, those synth noises sound like the producer's going out of their way make them to sound cheap and nasty.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

wow the wut wut wut track is one of the best songs i've heard all year lex, just beautiful!

kind of interesting take on modern hip hop production...

the other two songs are good, but for some reason they seem like tracks that are waiting for some one to come record rap vocals over...

but they are good...

whats' the story with this band? uk? new? do they have an album?

S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

actually the more i'm getting into it, the third one is really great too, the second seems the weakest to me...

but the "wut wut wut" high sample thing on the first song is one of those little bits of magic that is hard to match.

S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:31 (thirteen years ago) link

This is probably an artifact of my headphones but it sounds like most of the low end of "Wut" is missing, making this kind of a trebly, tremulous mess.

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, thanks to years of listening to UK hardcore/jungle/dnb, all of these songs sound half tempo and sluggish to me.

"Every Time" is kind of great though, just to contradict what I just wrote.

yeah sounds quality is ass and i have nice headphones

tempos are pretty low...doesn't really seem like something you could dance to really, more listening music...

is this chillwave? idk what that really is

S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah it's REALLY trebly, which is why I'm surprised at it being Lex's single of the year, for all his railing against treble in pop music. It's quite bassy as well though, just not much in between.

It's all about the cut-up vocals for me. The other two would be greatly improved by having someone shout "Pow pow pow pow Wacka Flocka Flame!" over the top.

If anything it's come out of dubstep, which explains the tempo and general sluggishness, but it's been big on dancefloors this year. Albeit the sort of dancefloor I tend to avoid.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe it would be good for line dancing, doing the achy breaky and slap leather etc

S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:41 (thirteen years ago) link

it seems like it would be good "slowly staggering through an opiate haze" music

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, thanks to years of listening to UK hardcore/jungle/dnb, all of these songs sound half tempo and sluggish to me.

What about your years of listening to hip-hop though?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah it just sounds like a kinda goofy take on like diplomats type stuff

S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:45 (thirteen years ago) link

This is a good bit slower than like... 95% of the hip-hop I listen to!

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:45 (thirteen years ago) link

eh, i think it's pushing it call it any sort of flagship nightslugs release, it's good but there's easily other comparable releases.

re: the trebl-y-ness - have any of you heard this live on a good pa? the bass is killer.

fauxmarc, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

It's trebly AND bassy, the version I have sounds pretty big on headphones.

there is definitely some clubworthy bass in there on "wut"--whoever said it's the midrange that is gone was otm.

this is kind of cool but yeah it's hard to know what to "do" with it--tempo-wise and given the spaced-out vibe it kind of reminds me of that g-side record w/out the rapping and nasa samples.

goole, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 18:18 (thirteen years ago) link

There is totally a bassline, although it probably doesn't carry through to a Youtube embed.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 18:24 (thirteen years ago) link

but i hear other low end? weird

goole, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 18:29 (thirteen years ago) link

i think the lack of bass is probably due to youtube quality...

its function in dancefloor sets is pretty amazing - it really disrupts most of them, just because the sound palette is just so full-on compared to everything surrounding it, but that's not really a bad thing. i'd never say these were bangers as such - they just sound incredible on club speakers that magnify their largeness. people don't so much get down to them as raise their hands up.

those synth noises sound like the producer's going out of their way make them to sound cheap and nasty.

i don't get this in the slightest - yeah it's trebly but it feels so clean, and there are so many ingredients (plus a ton of echo) that all three tracks have this incredibly majestic feel for me - these really overwhelming waves of sound that sound particularly amazing on club speakers. i love how detailed they are - that twinkling motif on "wut", the synth melody coming in towards the end of "every time", the whistle mid-"showstoppa". a lot of the higher-end melodies owe quite a bit to the more abstract grime productions of the mid-00s, and there's a huge juke influence in the beats (esp "showstoppa").

eh, i think it's pushing it call it any sort of flagship nightslugs release, it's good but there's easily other comparable releases.

it's prob my favourite night slugs release so far - certainly the most distinct (and the most demanded - they weren't going to release this so soon after "irl" (girl unit's debut)) but it built up such momentum that they had to. kingdom's that mystic ep and velour's the velvet collection ep are prob my other two favourite NS releases - they're so different too, properly banging, dark techno and gorgeous, melodic woozy funk (one for dâm-funk fans, i think) respectively. jam city's "arpjam" should be huge when it's released too.

whats' the story with this band? uk? new? do they have an album?

one guy, often hilariously assumed to be an all-female group. this is his second single - the first, "irl", is ok, pretty different though. he's done an incredible remix of c.r.s.t.'s "the bells", not on youtube but it definitely has the large, ecstatic walls of synths that these do.

I think Matt is saying that the actual synth sounds used are tightly associated with grimier music. Certainly when I was listening to this I got a sense of musical density but nothing came close to coming across as "majestic", rather more like this is the sound of rave kids fucking in slow motion.

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 18:43 (thirteen years ago) link

"showstoppa" is prob the most majestic of the three for me? i always think of a red carpet rolling out in space.

girl unit's also done two u&k mixes this year which probably help "explain" where his own aesthetic comes from -

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 18:51 (thirteen years ago) link

like basically it's hard for me to get "majestic" out of a track that sounds like Skin Up played at half tempo

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 18:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah it's not intending to sound rich and deep and opulent because the actual synth sounds used are essentially the same kind of fake chiptune noises you hear on the Ikonika album, it's harking back to a particular 90s nostalgic way of sounding shimmery, and the cheapness of the sound is part and parcel of that. You compare it to the sounds on, say, the We Love album and one obviously sounds like they've gone to the trouble of making it sound rich and full and textured and the other hasn't, and probably isn't interested in doing so. It sounds preset-y basically.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

a lot of the higher-end melodies owe quite a bit to the more abstract grime productions of the mid-00s

Exactly! Grime wasn't meant to sound opulent, it was meant to sound like cheap dirty beat-em-up music.

not sure why i made the justice snark comment above, i don't know why i have inbuilt negativity towards this when actually anytime i open ableton i try and make music like this. think i have some contrarian feelings towards this just cos i live in london, but i like wut. agree with whoever said they wait for a rapper to come in, i feel a lot like this about lots of this kind of music.

agree about the comments about "what to do" with this music too...i've been in clubs where people "bounce" and it's extremely macho/tedious watching people posture...i guess if i went out to clubs where they play rap music it might be like that too but i dunno, maybe more fun.

It's the R&B cut-ups that really make this IMO... it doesn't really feel very functional but that's fine.

Wow, the last four tracks on the Night Slugs label comp are really fantastic, especially Jacques Greene's 'Baby I Don't Know What You Want'. This sort of colourful space-funk sound works *so* much better for me than the more full-on thick-grey-line bass stuff that comes before it. I'm including 'Wut' in the former category obviously.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah the optimum one really surprised me, given what his ep was like. you should hear the velour ep if you haven't, it's all technicolour off-kilter funk like that - you can tell why dâm-funk's a kindred spirit.

this is my favourite on the compilation though, soooo good - posted it in the dance partisans thread already but never sure how many people actually look in there

this is not on night slugs, but the dance partisans thread doesn't seem to get many responses, so in the vein of "banging bass music with r&b samples", gotta recommend brenmar's at it again ep (out this week), in particular this a-ma-zing marques houston-sampling joint:

Chiming in on this being my favourite thing in the dubstep/bass continuum so far. Early dubstep I found a bit slow and dull, didn't mind the nosebleed Caspa stuff but it got boring after not very long at all, then all the Zomby/post-step stuff came out and was pretty good but seemed a bit IDM-y and missed the point of "bass" music. This is great stuff - a nice mixture of colour, danceability, poppiness and menacingness. Love the way dance music is going at the moment.

What are you doing here? (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

That Brenmar track is fun, I like it. All these dudes need to stop fannying around with samples and instrumentals and start working with some actual vocalists a bit more.

I like the Velour EP as well, Booty Slammer and Kick It Til It Breaks in particular.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Like it feels like British dance music is approaching some kind of Wild Bunch style tipping point but not getting there due to a) lack of vocalists, b) lack of record labels to put the good stuff out (WHY are there no dedicated funky record labels?) and c) a residual hangover from dubstep that values bass over beats and hooks. It's getting there though.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

the vocalists closer to this scene that spring to mind - ahu, fatima - tend to veer towards off-kilter/abstract/skewed hip-hop stuff themselves rather than club bangers

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Scoring dance music for orchestra never really works, it either sounds like remedial classical music or loses something else in translation. Unless they're going to somehow orchestrate for an airhorn and pitched up vocals it would just ruin it.

Jacques Greene is the best producer associated with Night Slugs at the moment I reckon (assuming Nzungunzu don't count, and Girl Unit is hit-and-miss). Seems to understand the importance of colour and having bass that does something other than throb and glower. A lot of other Night Slugs stuff talks a good game with its technicolour sci-fi landscape synths and the music seems drab in comparison.

Really didn't like the Egyptrixx album at all, have yet to hear any Jam City that's done much for me.

the importance of colour and having bass that does something other than throb and glower.

Most of the producers mentioned here seem to be working on a deliberately icy, inhuman sound..... it's hard for me to love a lot of it. Which is funny, because I used to get off - and still do - on extremely jacking techno. I dunno. There's an incredible fussiness to a lot of it.

yes. these days they do the night tracking house night type thing at Blizzarts on Thursdays for their Baller's Social Club Night, and open for whoever they bring into town. they have piknic electronique the weekend of OSHEAGA and have booked Girl Unit and DâM-FunK, which should be properly epic.

I really dug the Velour ep, actually. Probably my favourite Night Slugs release outside of Girl Unit. (And, surely, shouldn't we get a mod to change the title of the thread to some sort of all-purpose night slugs one for ease of discovery?)

I love Lone, although any record with a tune called Petrcane Beach Track is pretty much bound to appeal to me.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

PTN is pretty sweet yeah. Breach, Hypno, DJ Dom, T.Williams are all ace. The Hackman and Doc Daneeka 12"s are good too but not quite the same level for me. I love Ramp and Brainmath too, they've got to many good labels that lot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIdzqO5tKO8

Wonder if T.Williams will have a release on Night Slugs, he's on the comp but it's with L-Vis 1990 and he's a massive weak link in the roster as a producer, quality DJ/label guy though.

I've been suprised how quite Night Slugs have been this year, we're almost half way through and only had an album and one white label from Pearson Sound it feels like they've slowed down a lot.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 11:13 (twelve years ago) link

Well his first album was basically a BOC homage - hip-hop drums pared with analog synths. The recent stuff has the same nostalgic vibe but with more of a 90's techno underpinning.

This Ikonika mix is a lot better than these sorts of mixes usually are, second half especially. What's the insane ravey one 10mins from the end?

I feel like the world has moved on since the Night Slugs wars of 2010 but if this is the direction the genre's taking in 2011 I'll be happy. Still not mad keen on the fallback metallic bass noise they seemingly use all the time though.

This is where the Lone chat was...

http://wigflex.com/2011/05/12/lone-flex/

He's got another ravey one coming out on Wigflex it sounds pretty sweet.

The Ikonika mix is damn good, her mixes usualy are. The last one I heard of her's was: http://www.factmag.com/2010/11/29/fact-mix-206-ikonika/ which is on a par with it I'd say.

I enjoyed that Marcus set too its not an either/or thing for me. Although I like Petchy, Ill Blu, Funkystepz, Champion, etc loads better for my funky mixes. Marcus has been so shit at mixing when I've seen him live that I hardly tune in anymore to his show unless a load of people have been bigging up a recent one or something.

That new Slackk EP on Local Action is indeed a beast. He's really nailed those fucked up synth melodies. Almost Transparent is ace too, the subtler synths work a treat on that one.

no tunes, not very hooky, not very danceable, just sort of clanky and metallic

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 23:14 (nine years ago) link

not hooky, okay, i can see that, but those two songs had quite a lot going for them, sensual/warm textures-wise. no big tunes, sure, but enough other stuff in its place. never felt like it was dreary or lacking purpose/momentum, which is often what happens on dance albums. and if you like 80s R&B, i think you would be able to get behind them. not everything has to grab you by the balls!

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 23:25 (nine years ago) link

i wouldn't have listened to an album of 80s r&b instrumentals!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 23:32 (nine years ago) link

but now you have the chance to! anyway, i get the criticisms of the album as a whole, but there are songs on there i think deserve to be heard in their own right. like, that kingdom track bankhead is one of the best things night slugs ever put out, and i consider those jam city songs of a piece with that. anyway, the new album seems to come with some ridiculous conceptual baggage but im hoping the actual music doesnt pay too much attention to it.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 23:36 (nine years ago) link

Despite the press materials dressing this up it is essentially an "angry and disillusioned young man rallies against society" album, the kind of thing that has always existed, just done differently and well.

I think Classical Curves makes more sense now its influence has entrenched itself in contemporary dance music. Not to say that it is singular and unique - there were plenty of acts doing similar things - but it exists at a very specific intersection of zones that seems a lot less unnatural now.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 19 March 2015 11:51 (nine years ago) link

Matt DC, Thursday, 19 March 2015 12:04 (nine years ago) link

it's completely unlike anything on NS to date. on paper it's even less my thing but idk, the alienation and disillusion aren't just in the press materials, they're in the very good lyrics as well, and it's ultimately a very optimistic album

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Thursday, 20 July 2023 15:54 (eight months ago) link

i’ve been getting back into night slugs, they had a lot of good records!

i recently got a copy of “the courts” 12” single w/ the main attraktionz + jam city feature on the other side, and that song sounds, if anything, even better now

i’m still more into the nswl white labels and club constructions in general but here’s my current pox

ns009 jam city “magic drops”
ns010 bok bok “southside”
ns017 girl unit “hysterics” (credited as hysterics)
nscc001 l-vis 1990 “club constructions vol. 1”
nscc003 kw griff “bring in the katz”
nscc006 jam city “club constructions vol. 6”
nswl004 jam city refixes (let me bang, endgames)
nswl007 pearson sound edits (deep inside, rod lee)
nswl010 helix + flirta d “no hook no bs”
nswl011 jam city “the courts / the nite life”

the late great, Thursday, 20 July 2023 17:37 (eight months ago) link

i mean “the courts” sounds better. probably helps that there’s a lot more “experimental club” compatible techno out there (on labels like timedance, livity, hessle, etc) … the cloud rap track sounds worse, still good but i can understand why it didn’t really get released

one that passed under my radar but i thought was interesting is “p jam” from the white label series, sorta jungle and sorta grime remixes of nightwriters “let the music you” … the grime version is unsurprisingly a lot more credible

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NRIGg5-dhA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcZr8qQWqQo

but wtf jam city for finally releasing “final joust” free on twitter as a wav but not pressing any copies
