Also, no arms?
i just tweeted that i couldn't tell whether that's meant to be really weird body modification or just bad photoshopping. surely the former? no arms, extra-long legs...what's the relevant sci-fi film reference, there must be one.
is "massive attack" going to be on this? that's the only single i love so far. "check it out" and "your love" aren't even listenable :(
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 15 October 2010 16:45 (thirteen years ago) link
no massive attack isn't on it
I like her latest single "right thru me," pretty much her most honest/lacking-in-pretense song since "autobiography"/"can you hear me" it's like a real life version of "your love"'s fairy tale

i like "right thru me" quite a bit, but...idk, i felt that nicki's ability to be a RAPPER at the same time as a POP STAR was one of the things that made her pretty special in today's climate, and it's a bit sad to see no evidence of that in her solo career proper apart from the failed first single (which is still leagues better than the slush that's followed it)
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 15 October 2010 18:44 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah the further "Massive Attack" recedes into the distance of practically never having existed, the more I appreciated as a better representation of her stilted cartoon swag than the shits she's been releasing since then. you wouldn't think it'd be that hard to translate Nicki's schtick into a Missy-style goofy hit, but she's struggling with it.

now i have to ponder which disappoints me more: the squandered potential of nicki as a rapper or the squandered potential of this cover
― truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 October 2010 20:06 (thirteen years ago) link
The no-arms thing is pretty cool. I have no problems with the font. But those bars at the top of the photo are pointless. I know there would be too much wasted space without them, but they're still pointless.
― altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 15 October 2010 20:07 (thirteen years ago) link
if they were worried about space they could've had her flush along the bottom of the image w/ the title in different font up top
― truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Friday, 15 October 2010 20:08 (thirteen years ago) link
the lines kind of look like blinds, or shop shutters about to come down? like she's in a window display. they could have made a bit more effort if that's what they were going for though.

this is another one spoiled by the modern malaise of endless moaning abt heavy burdens and haters and all the other pressures of a career YOU HAVENT EVEN HAD YET FFS, but on the plus side the sentimental softrock 80s vibe of the album is so consistent (dipsettish even) that fwiw it does kinda hold together and keep you involved - to the degree you're interested in being at least. okay for a guest-rapper's debut.

though i'm not really disappointed as such with pink friday - i think maybe cuz my expectations dipped and fluctuated so much ahead of it, i'd definitely abandoned any hope of my dream minaj album that showcased everything i love about her happening, so i think i'm more relieved than anything that it's half-decent. what with the bonus trax there's definitely an acceptable album in here if you prune the more pointless songs, which is more than can be said for eg kanye west (and if we're talking about what an "interesting" "character" he is despite his album's flaws, how much more can that be said of nicki).

Good album. Nice balance between Nicki's pop side and her rapper side. (Like I'm an expert on that! OK, I like the balance between the two. If it had been all one or all the other, it could have been a bit of a chore to listen to the whole record in one go.) Superb use of samples too. I think I got more joy from the first listen to this than from any other 2010 pop album I've heard so far.
No bonus tracks on the copy I bought :(

― jagger reupholstered my pussy (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 05:35 (thirteen years ago) link
didn't suggest that it made me LIKE the album more than i do - i think it's still largely disappointing given the level of raw talent and potential nicki has, although there are four-ish tracks i like ok on this, and adding in massive attack and one or two of the bonus tracks it makes for a decent EP.
― The SBurbs (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 05:40 (thirteen years ago) link
lyrically she spends way too long talking about the gender politics and not enough time actually doing them. aside from the production, she doesn't even break out the voices on two-thirds of the album, and she never switches up mid-song. which...what is the point of that?
still maintain it's not a bad album for what it is - there are enough bloody tracks that piecing together a decent mini-album from them is easy. fuck the record buying public for making "massive attack" a flop and "your love" a hit though.

depends how you intend to get it, it only becomes worth getting when you take the 6 bonus trax into account (two of which - the best two! - are only available to non-americans like us if downloaded illegally anyway)

"moment 4 life" was okay but nowhere near the perfect pop moment that "super bass" is - actually it took taylor loving it to make me realise that "super bass" is basically all about capturing pretty much exactly what taylor does on "you belong with me", "love story", "fearless", "hey stephen", that all-consuming thrill of a crush.

one of the songs to really predict that trend was soulja boy's "donk," which nicki used for one of her biggest early mixtape tracks, so it kinda makes sense that she sounds in her element doing stuff like this and "dance (a$$)" i guess.

the thing i like about this is that the insults are kind of understatedly bizarre -- "you lookin like a lab rat", starting off the second verse by addressing the other person as if they're actually bubbles the monkey, "who's gassin this ho? First listen: this song is awesome, best thing she's put out in the last year. Nice to see some different voice-pastiches getting thrown into her Batman toolbelt here - particularly, I don't think I've heard the thing she does around 1:55 forward. It feels (to me) like she's verging into a wide set of real-life character impressions, like part of that could be Any Girl's Mom, and then the part that's Any Girl Practicing R&B Singing In Front Of The Mirror...I dunno. There's potential there.
I wish she would drop the candy-colored wig thing for just a little while - I love the look but I'm kind of into her dialing it down as this flattened-makeup, no-eyebrows thing she's doing in parts of this.

haha what an amazing video. i think i love this song now (liked it before but not like, raving about it - it's lots of fun but as a straight-up rap song i don't think it matches up to the early mixtape stuff that well). tim is right that the massive-eyed warped nicki face is the most unsettling bit.
idk whether shipz meant "boner-shrivelingly unsettling vocal tics" in a good way or not but it's certainly a positive imo
all of this does make me sad that "massive attack" will forever be the Lost Minaj Single, it's still ridiculously good and better than any single since apart from "super bass"

People say so, but I don't see any specific Kim references to indicate shots fired... Who knows?
And yeah, this is definitely very "Itty Bitty Piggy" and not quite as incredible, but after the direction Pink Friday took overall (in part by commercial necessity), it's good to see Nicki signalling that this is at least PART of what she's going to be doing going forward.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Sunday, 22 January 2012 17:18 (twelve years ago) link

― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Sunday, 22 January 2012 20:59 (twelve years ago) link
i really think that regardless of nicki's intentions it's far more interesting to talk about how the song works (or not) as though it's not about lil kim, because ~catfights~ between female rappers are not their sole point of interest
― tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:01 (twelve years ago) link
(it pisses me off that nicki's apparently bought into that narrative too. NO ONE FUCKING DOES IT TO UP-AND-COMING MALE RAPPERS.)
― tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:02 (twelve years ago) link
I'm not so sure I agree with that lex, lots of writers try to force narratives on X vs Y when rappers are coming out. Of course its not at the annoying "catfight" level as it is with the female rappers, but critics definitely do try to fill in these neat little narratives of Young Rapper X is gunning at Old Rapper Y's spot.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:05 (twelve years ago) link
and how often do they do that vis-à-vis the number of emerging male rappers? once in a while?
EVERY post-nicki female rapper has had the "ooooh she's coming for nicki's crown" narrative foisted on them AT ALL TIMES. male rappers can diss unnamed rivals in their songs without people going "is it about X or Y?" but when az banks comes out with "212" it MUST be about nicki.
― tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:10 (twelve years ago) link
also why is this a point that people want to argue? IT'S REALLY OBVIOUS THAT THIS HAPPENS. nnnnghhhhhhhhh don't fucking try to argue otherwise just to pick an argument with me.
― tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:11 (twelve years ago) link
or should we just agree that there's no sexism or clichés about how female rappers are covered anywhere, at all
I get what you are saying lex, but I do think it happens wrt male rappers much more than you are giving credit. How many times did stuff like "oooh that must be a Em diss" or "he's totally going for Jigga there" come up? Quite a bit, iirc.
I'm not arguing with you! I agree, and its frustrating. It just DOES happen with male rappers too.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:11 (twelve years ago) link
i'm saying it doesn't happen by default and ALL THE TIME with EVERY NEW SONG THEY MAKE to male rappers.
and it's never used in the service of the "there can only be one existent female rapper at any given time" belief, or as a means of avoiding treating her like an artist in her own right/addressing her songs in their own right.
― tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:17 (twelve years ago) link
so in addressing nicki's songs in their own right we should just ignore all the lines about calling out other female rappers
― dayo, Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:20 (twelve years ago) link

― dayo, Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:26 (twelve years ago) link
I dunno Lex, I take the point above. But agree with dayo, it's still a real aspect to how the track has been talked about and received, so I don't think it shouldn't ignored either. I also don't understand why it has to be an argument?
― MikoMcha, Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:27 (twelve years ago) link
male rappers can diss unnamed rivals in their songs without people going "is it about X or Y?"
i really don't agree w/ this at all, and it's one thing about rap blogs that really pisses me off -- ppl have been picking thru wayne and drake and kanye and jay lines trying to make up beefs b/w them for years and years now
― tyga mother (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:46 (twelve years ago) link
and even on a micro level, ppl will pick thru lines by smaller rappers from the same city wondering if they're going at each other

― tyga mother (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:47 (twelve years ago) link
While it's pathetic that (male) listeners still define female performers on male terms, guys have dissed each other practically since the genre was created (KRS-1, LL Cool J, 50 Cent, etc).

I didn't really think about (or care) at who the song is directed, but I'm not gonna act like nicki had no part in framing the debate around this song
― dayo, Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:55 (twelve years ago) link
There's definitely a difference between people reading into to subliminals and vague, general/generic disses that male rappers fit into every song, and people constructing rivalries between every female rapper and pitting all female rappers against eachother (which they do ALL OF THE TIME WITHOUT FAIL). though, in this case, the song is clearly about Lil Kim and Kim & Nicki have been vocal about their "beef" (though obv this beef started because Kim is insecure about her place in rap given Nicki's ascendancy and the fact there can't be more than one active female rapper for some reason)
― DO NOT CALL (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 22 January 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago) link
I agree w/ lex's argument in general and would agree w/ no qualifications if the debate around 'super bass' or even, to use a stronger example, massive attack had been shoehorned into this narrative but please don't act like nicki wasn't complicit in setting the goalposts for 'stupid hoe'

lex isn't RONG so much as thick for realizing why this is the worst possible song to make that particular point about. also smh at multiple people 'bringing up' the comparison to "Itty Bitty Piggy" as if that's not what i was talking about upthread ("one of the songs to really predict that trend was soulja boy's 'donk,' which nicki used for one of her biggest early mixtape tracks).
― Gukbe a lady tonight (some dude), Monday, 23 January 2012 01:49 (twelve years ago) link
the SEXISM in that song is so thick it repulses me and there's a positively 4th street thing about it coming from a supposed "strong"/"independant" woman that makes it even worse.
video is plain sexploitation and the whole idea of women claiming the "stupid hoe" predicate seems wrong to me since it's adapting a repressive chauvinist lingo or whatever. maybe that's not how you experience it in america because blacks also for reasons i don't understand use racist slurs and that seems accepted but to me this whole thing is really weird.
figure it's a shame since nicki is a very talented mc.

I wonder if the Stupid Hoe vid is slightly mocking the Lil' Kim pornbot schtick actually, or if that's purely just Nicki doing her own hyper-commodified pornbot Barbie thing. some of the creepier, exaggerated bits do kind of look like Lil' Kim parody

with lex on the awfulness of "i'm angelina, you jennifer". problem for me is that angelie vs. jennifer is some stupid fucking bullshit, and the less i hear about it, the better.
― his hands are a dirty fountain through which lives spurt (contenderizer), Monday, 23 January 2012 10:59 (twelve years ago) link
what shipz said about "boner-shriveling" is actually pretty pertinent to what nicki does, because she both plays up to a conventional hypersexualised schtick (see the "dance (a$$)" video) but also disrupts it with freakish body exaggerations. it's not exactly Taking A Stand but it's certainly fucking around with people's expectations (and boners). the slow loris face in the "stupid hoe" video exemplifies this. calling it "plain sexploitation" means you weren't watching it closely enough.
and then when she's on her knees in the cage the first thing i thought was that she was taking the piss but at the same time she's still on her knees in a cage so i guess she's trying to have her cake and eat it.
it's remarkable how many people appear to have never heard female rappers use the words "bitch" and "ho".

@ lex i see now that "plain sexploitation" was a bad choice of words. i get that there's some kind of surreal aspect but i do not think it makes it subversive at all which maybe is also your point wrt cage scene.

i don't really follow sales but is nicki really that much bigger than kim was in terms of profile? also you know missy was hella explicit at times, it's just that no one pigeonholed her as a "sexual" rapper b/c she didn't fit the image.
the funny thing is, in terms of how she approaches sex on record, nicki is far far more in line with missy than kim/trina, and since going "pop" has toned down a lot of that stuff.

I was going to point you at the 34 million Google hits for "missy elliott sex" but all of them seem to be about her history as a survivor of sexual abuse.
Even though I remember her getting just as much pigeonholing as everyone else, if your statement is true it's likely because unlike Lil Kim/Trina/Foxy Brown/practically every other female rapper who hit in the late 90s, not all of Missy's singles were about how nasty she was in bed.

I can't understand why the r&b/hip hop community is not liking this. I guess being weird is not cool anymore. I guess you have to be all cool and "swag"??? Also, does it seem like r&b/hip hop doesn't like uptempo songs anymore. It seems like artists release an uptempo high concept song and it tanks and then releases a midtempo catchy, but boring song and it does well. Also does this song sound vaguely Balitmorish clubby to you guys? Maybe I'm reaching.

I personally think she is the true descendant of Grace Jones which is why I'm enjoying this. Grace made people uncomfortable and Nicki is doing the same thing (but doing it with a sense of humor) for the r&b/hip hop community who tend to cry foul after a woman gets some longevity and tries something different.

It's not even that fast. It's only 100 bpm, which is way slower than "Super Bass" but a lot faster than most rap that gets played on the radio in 2012. 90-100 used to be pretty normal tempo for rap songs.
― lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 19:14 (twelve years ago) link
It's not Outkast "B.O.B" fast but still fast (and random) enough for people to not like it. Also this song is marketed towards the hip hop community while "Super Bass" is a pop song. An uptempo pop song is expected while uptempo hip hop songs don't get that much love.

Nicki seems more one-note and less adultlike than Grace Jones.
There are times that Grace has felt one note even though that's not the case. (Examples of "I've Done it Again and "Victor Should Have Been a Jazz Musician). I also feel that Grace courts more of the seriousness in her music/videos than the humor even though she is a funny person.
Nicki is just more overtly goofy and incorporates that in her music more.
also nicki is trying pretty hard to court that comparison w/ the grace jones homage in the video (albeit the exact same homage amber rose and Kanye did a couple years earlier)
There have been a lot of Grace Jones homages of the past few years, but I like Nicki's because even though her being unsettling to listeners is done in a different angle than Grace's. Like Grace she moves through genres a little off kilter. There is something inviting yet a little grating about both of their performances. Grace can be seen as just a monotone sing talk dominatrix while Nicki can be seen as an annoying drama student trying to rap. Also, their sexuality s not solely for the hetero-male gaze compared to their peers (Diana Ross/Madonna for Grace; Lil Kim/Foxy for Nicki).
tl;dr version - Both crazy women who do interesting, though not fail proof music who can be a little scary and/or annoying.

I can understand why people are being turned off but at the same time I have a feeling that people just want her to just fill the roles of a Lil Kim or Foxy Brown because that's how she was introduced. I love the way she raps when she just raps but at the same time, what she has been doing lately has been fascinating (even if it fails or not). I don't know. I feel like part of people's complaints is she needs to be put in her place (good ole rap sexism) or why isn't she doing things like she did six years ago (which makes no sense why you would ask anyone that question in life frankly).
But I think what bothers me about this whole Nicki thing is that the unwritten rules/expectations of hip hop for females are just so unrealistic and confining that even if all the songs were good would she receive praise or stil be lambasted because she's not being "hip hop." Even if I don't like the artist I get annoyed when people say "Such and such should stop doing this and adhere to what fans of a genre expects." And I think well who the fuck are you to say what they should and shouldn't do? God forbid this person doesn't fit into your fantasy world of expectations and idol worship.
tl;dr version: I still hope her original vision is intact for this album because even if it is a failure it still can be interesting to see a female rapper go this far image & music wise.

how about it filling their expectations for making worthwhile hip-hop music instead of turning into Flo Rida
― D-40, Thursday, 16 February 2012 06:08 (twelve years ago) link
Um dude she did her own version of the Lil Kim photo and The Jump Off song. Uh yeah for a second she looked like she was going to fill that role for Young Money.
Well she said from the jump off that she wanted to be more than just hip hop so she warned her fans. Also, Stupid Hoe and Roman in Moscow and that other song on the grammys dont' sound like any Flo Rida song I've ever heard of.
Plus, what is worthwhile hip hop music lately? Because to me that phrase has lost its meaning to me.

nicki posing like a lil kim poster & covering the jump off does not = her entire output is basically lil kim pt. 2
she broke out w/ mizay ent., working w/ gucci circa 09 before she was known as a part of young money & this was when her best stuff was dropping
her warning us that she wants to be "more" than hip-hop doesn't mean that fans cant be disappointed by that choice! the flo rida comparison was obv about the new song
and read the regional thug thread if you want to know about worthwhile hip hop because there is tons of it

i guess on the one hand it's easy to understand why she's doing what she's doing... her fanbase has grown and it's not like she's been ostracized from the hip-hop world or something. i guess everyone would like a new "super bass" seing as that's the song that really blasted her into superstardom, but if she's having her cake and eating it too there's no real reason for her to change what she's doing

^^ this, although more broadly i do have a problem with Nicki singing because she sounds awful
― CANDY aka JUNK (some dude), Friday, 17 February 2012 15:10 (twelve years ago) link
eh, she usually sounds okay if the guide vocal isn't loud enough to clash with her live vocals; she's never off enough to be entirely out of key, unlike say Rihanna (who apparently can only sing "We Found Love" in key live)
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Friday, 17 February 2012 15:19 (twelve years ago) link

had half-hoped for an so-to-speak 'imperial' album; i guess born out of expecting her to by now have fully grown into new popstar skin and jettisoned this "better to serve in harlem than reign in hell" mentality she secretly harbours
(ie. the whole forced faustian pact career narrative where she just wants to be a rapper, rapper dudes would never take her seriously, 'your love' blows up even though she hates it, she decides to let the big money do the talking etc)
but instead it's still so awkward *in terms of an album*; not even entertainingly schizo bipolar, just a lot of it middling and grimly chop-shopped

it's kind of like two EPs, one for people who like nicki when she's good and the other for people who like nicki when she's basic, with some half-assed r&b that surely no one actually goes to nicki for shoved in the middle, and then "gun shot" and "stupid hoe" tacked on to the end because you may as well if you're releasing that many songs.
i'm surprised no one's done it before really
― lex pretend, Thursday, 29 March 2012 13:25 (twelve years ago) link
oh my god i didn't see what was up with that picture for at least 15 seconds!
i don't think nicki has the wiring to make an 'event album' even on the functional level of rihanna or katy perry, let alone drake or any other rapper at her level of popularity. i barely can picture her listening to music, like, rapping and singing were things she just heard enough to pick up for herself and then ran with it. her records will forever be this sour squirrely cocktail of talent and second-guessing and dumb zany abandon.
― some dude, Thursday, 29 March 2012 13:34 (twelve years ago) link
doubtful to the extent rihanna & kp are wired for that sort of thing at all let alone to the extent it might be faulty like nicki's
feel p sure she has a fair grounding as a rap listener of the 90s ny variety, maybe not a student of the game like naming her top 5 boot camp klik but enough to ref biggie/busta/beanuts in non-obv ways. don't think any execs are begging her to put cam and nas on either
i also think she has a pride in her rapping that is not purely outta stage school, i reckon she will determinedly battle anyone if anyone actually were to do that sort of thing anymore
― r|t|c, Thursday, 29 March 2012 13:55 (twelve years ago) link
but i agree she probably doesnt tend to look at things in big picture terms yeah. altho it's not like there's any real reward in the music biz for it even if she did
― r|t|c, Thursday, 29 March 2012 13:59 (twelve years ago) link
yeah you're totally right and i was pushing too far in the opposite direction -- but i feel like there's some kind of weird "just put on a crazy wig and rap" blankness to what she does that is all the more offputting because she's not in the fembot puppet mold. obviously katy and rihanna get a lot of help in putting together tight little singles collections but the way they try to be everything to everyone isn't nearly as inherently scattershot as nicki's.
when i listen to "roman reloaded" (the song) all i can think about it is how little she actually rhymes sometimes (like seriously every line either ends with the same word or words that don't rhyme in the slightest) but nobody even seems to notice because her delivery throws you so far off the scent of the lazy/sloppy rapper archetype. it always drove me nuts that imo the catchiest four bars of her "monster" verse don't contain a single rhyme (rookie/pay/album out/climb it).
― some dude, Thursday, 29 March 2012 14:02 (twelve years ago) link
yeah i don't feel like i am being misled in those moments tho, i think it's calibrated for attention rather than sloppy - blame weezy for how it's evolved
'roman reloaded' isn't great anyhow but still i tend to hear it as uninspired rather than sloppy per se
not to hop in the trenches but re the 'monster' verse she is switching to conversational barbie character tbf (and she does rhyme climb it with climate next line)
― r|t|c, Thursday, 29 March 2012 14:19 (twelve years ago) link
also would you not say she's more "inherently scattershot" cos she has to inherently be more everything to more everyone than rih and kp ever do?

'gun shot' has melted my heart good and proper now
― r|t|c, Thursday, 29 March 2012 14:30 (twelve years ago) link
i dunno. rihanna is doing the reggae and the country adult contempo and the EDM and the swag R&B all back to back and it's still somehow not as flailing and rudderless as nicki just figuring out how many bars to sing and how many to rap in a given song.
i know i know climb it/climate but the way she finally stumbles on a rhyme with the 4th and 5th bars just makes me even more irritated about those 4 bars
― some dude, Thursday, 29 March 2012 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

― lex pretend, Thursday, 29 March 2012 14:46 (twelve years ago) link
idk whether you'd characterise rihanna's last two albums as particularly coherent (loud especially just seemed like bits of whatever thrown together) but i'll take flailing rudderless roman reloaded over either, just for the highs nicki provides (and if she's not gonna give us an event album, the obviousness with which she's aiming at different demographics at least make the bits you don't like completely ignorable. i'm kind of glad she's aiming for those things over a bloated 19-track album rather than in the same song)

it is so brilliantly constructed tho. like i know i said "becomes a duet" upthread but that doesn't quite do it justice the way it builds with nicki and beenie each having two completely separate scenes to themselves apart from one another (their own different choruses even!), bound by the beat's heart-fluttering hushed twinkling, and how it just ERUPTS with them finally coming together and almost just shouting the chorus at each other with the gunshots BOOM, BOOM, BOOM every line

also this is sorta nitpicking cuz i do think the rap tracks at the beginning (save "champion" are great) but this reminds me of the ross tape from this year where it feels like the person is really at the top of their game and in a perfect and very singular place with their sound and then they throw half the verses at guest rappers.

I sort of feel this album may have been more defensible had she done an I Am/Sasha Fierce and formalised its split personality.
The first three tracks on this are astonishing but even the rest of the rap section can't keep up the momentum. Really not that bothered about Beez In The Trap, she can't really do slower and sparser.
The second half is mostly useless, you've got to admire these dudes for their ability to make awesome female MCs over house music seem like a terrible idea. I wish she'd found a better use for those rapidfire raygun noises on Pound The Alarm, but good god certainly not the chorus of Pound The Alarm. Otherwise, it's not that the sugary stuff can't work (Super Bass ffs) but here it just doesn't.
Gun Shots > anything on the first half though, but then I will happily take dancehall Nicki over all other Nickis. It reminds me a bit of Lazar Morgan's One By One, that whole 80s yacht dancehall vibe. Shame no one actually gave it a proper dancehall beat, even a gentle one, but I guess a suitable remix will be along sooner rather than later.

Initially planned to be included on a re-release of Gaga's debut studio album, The Fame, she announced that the eight tracks would be included on a standalone release, saying that she thought the re-release was too expensive and that the albums were each conceptually different, describing them as Yin and yang respectively. A Super Deluxe edition of The Fame Monster including The Fame and additional merchandise, including a lock of her wig, was released on December 15, 2009.
I won a copy of this and, while it didn't have the lock of wig hair (thank fuck) it did have both the original album and the eight followup songs

also, even though it was released as a standalone release, The Fame Monster was conceived as an addendum to The Fame; from what I can tell Pink Friday... Roman Reloaded is a followup album with a really stupid, lazy name

It's a terrible title, at any rate.

this album is at least half terrible but weirdly i don't feel like that matters in the slightest, it's still one of my favourite releases of the year: what matters is how high the highs are

― Mississippi Butt Hurt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 6 April 2012 01:19 (twelve years ago) link
i mean i remember it being very clearly set up as a standalone 2nd album even before the title was announced so i can only imagine but yeah i probably would've made a similar assumption. it'd be a long window of time between the original and re-release, but there was an even longer gap between the Katy Perry album and the recent deluxe edition so it's plausible.

Sadly I don't think the highs are actually high enough to compensate for all the lows. Even if you stripped most of the second half out it'd still be a bit on the patchy side.
I like the bits where she's talking about doing horrible things with her penis though.

I suppose the real keepers here are:
Roman HolidayCome On A ConeI Am The LeaderHOV LaneGun ShotStupid Hoe
The rest of it is okayish to actively terrible. So there's an amazing EP in there. Just wish it could keep the bonkers momentum of the first three tracks.
There's not really any reason why the pop stuff shouldn't work with Nicki but, Gun Shot aside, it's the inability to come by any sung chorus that doesn't completely blow that kills it.

i dont really get that. what does he want the good songs to sound like? IMO the good songs on here are pretty much great nicki tracks.
i guess what i'm getting at is something similar to what you complain about w/ people complaining about rap albums being 'too long,' where its like, i'd rather get more bang for my buck -- its like hes trying to reduce the album to a 'yes' or 'no' when really its, 'part yes, part no'

"hov lane" is the fastest rap track, totally leavens the sparseness of "beez in the trap" and "roman reloaded", but it's not as crazed as the first three so it's not like you have to be in the mood for it. plus the amazing beat switch-up at the end.

most of the conversation surrounding this album seems to indicate that half of it is great (usually "the rap section"), the rest unlistenable garbage (usually "the pop section"), but actually i found the whole thing to be just kinda-sorta ok. i will agree with people who say it's bloated and tedious, though. oh well, guess i'm gonna cherrypick 'stupid hoe' and 'roman holiday' then. perhaps radio play may eventually win me over to some of the other tracks but at this point i really don't want to listen to this album again.

whenever nicki's tried to go in that direction beatwise ("massive attack", "stupid hoe") it's resulted in amazing songs but gigantic flops. idk, pop has had shitty production for so long now and it doesn't seem to be ending. i lean towards pop failing nicki rather than vice versa b/c it's not usually incumbent on the singers/rappers to take care of pushing the production envelope - how many of the rappers who made their name over timbaland/neptunes beats would've just gone for whatever's hot if they'd come up nowadays?

― dayo, Monday, 16 April 2012 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

― dayo, Monday, 16 April 2012 21:43 (twelve years ago) link
it's all pretty fluid... i think she makes a pretty clear distinction w/ her own music between "pop style music" and "rap" -- if the latter bleeds into the pop world, then my handwringing would be unwarranted, but it hasn't really yet
"beez in the trap" might change that! which would be cool, i love that song. and it has enough "look at me now" in the beat that i don't think it's out of the question. but even then it's only one song (or maybe two if you count "did it on em")

i guess it's less that i'm hanging onto a promise and more just curious as to what would happen if she had pop producers working with her that weren't all copying the same songs over and over again
there are things going on in her brain that i would like to see applied to pop music that tried and push boundaries musically, not just in terms of how successful she can be as a female MC.
maybe i'm being a bit selfish or rockist, idk -- in any even i'm mostly just talking things out and am probably biased anyway cuz the tim/neptunes era of pop is my fav music

i guess i'm saying i'm not sure if she's had the right opportunity to prove herself in that regard -- like i'm not gonna begrudge for a second her desire to make as much money as possible and if that means jumping into the crypt with dr luke then by all means, but i guess it's sorta lamentable from an outside perspective that her and we can't have our cake and eat it too
― J0rdan S., Monday, 16 April 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link
What is responsible for her -- if you will -- crisis? The sound of hit pop music forcing Minaj into not-so-snug jackets? I want to blame The Climate because it's easy. It's also easy but more correct that when Minaj pulls a "Starship" she sounds like Lou Reed singing atop a horn section in 1974: for a tenth of a second fascinating because platinum aspirations magnify her peculiarities?
otoh "Super Bass" Captured The Moment and doesn't sound half so compromised. I think the problem is Minaj herself; she either underestimates her strengths or overestimates her ability to render her peculiarities palatable.

I think Nicki has to shoulder responsibility for not really actually trying to make tunes that succeed in the way that "Super Bass" does, and perhaps not really understanding how that success works... I think pretty much everyone who actually heard it (on either side of the divide) liked it from the off, but it was Nicki (or her label) who made it hard for it to be noticed for a long time.
What was notable about the bonus tracks for the first album is that they nearly all pitched to a mid-range* (albeit with "Super Bass" at one end of that range) that both albums for the most part neatly step around.
* one which is vaguely reminiscent of the third and fourth Missy albums in tone.

I dunno, it's tough to say because remember, a lot of the stuff you're citing definitely PLAYED as over the top and crazy at the time. And for Nicki's pop audience, she is over the top and crazy, even on the "pop" songs. That's the niche she has I think - exactly "over the top" enough that people are like, OMG, I love her, she's so crazy!

― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Monday, 16 April 2012 23:40 (twelve years ago) link
I think pop audiences are pretty used to "crazy" or even just "odd", and for the most part it doesn't faze them.
The "problem" with "Stupid Hoe" and "Massive Attack", and "Beez in the Trap" for that matter (and I love all three), is not that they're too crazy but that they're not singalong efforts in the way that, say, "Work It" or "Milkshake" were - sure they've got memorable hooks but not really in a singalong manner.
Whereas I think a very very large proportion of rap crossover hits in any era rely on a sung chorus to really connect with a massive audience, albeit using a variety of different approaches.
A lot of the appeal of "Super Bass" is similar to "Work It", the shifts between crazy verses and memorable chorus in particular.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 00:11 (twelve years ago) link
Whereas I think a very very large proportion of rap crossover hits in any era rely on a sung chorus to really connect with a massive audience
missy herself might be the #1 way to disprove this - as astounding as "get ur freak on" is, it's not because of its chorus. "work it" has a catchier chorus but again that's not where the appeal is.
"getcha freak on getcha freak on getcha freak on" vs "you a stupid hoe you a stupid hoe you a stupid hoe stupid stupid"
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 08:14 (twelve years ago) link
I was going to note that "Get Ur Freak On" is a pretty startling exception. I did say "a very very large proportion", not "every"!
I agree re "Work It" but years of hearing it played in clubs or at house parties has confirmed for me that typically half the people rap along to the verses as well as the choruses, and other half just jump in at the choruses.
Obviously having great verses makes the songs more appealing to everyone but I think a large amount of general listeners most of the time need a memorable chorus as well.
Missy's an interesting example actually because she kind of demonstrates same dynamic in a less extreme form:
- "The Rain" doesn't really have a chorus - it got to 51 on the general US charts but number 1 on the US rap charts.
- "She's A Bitch" is kind of an equivalent to "Stupid Hoe" - it crashed at 90 on the charts (19 US rap charts).
- "Hot Boyz" went platinum and peaked at 5 on the charts (and 1 on the rap charts). It's her biggest hit still, but is really R&B. Fabulous chorus obviously.
- "Get Ur Freak On" got to 7 and was her biggest crossover rap tune at that time (if you count "Hot Boyz" as R&B) - but only got to 7 on the rap charts. It also didn't go gold.
- "Work It" got to 2 on the charts (1 on rap charts) but didn't go gold.
- Missy's biggest rap hit was "Lose Control" which got to number 3 and went gold - and has a big singalong chorus. BUT it only got to 3 on the US rap charts.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 08:42 (twelve years ago) link
I should stress that I'm not trying to defend the taste of people who require hip hop to have sung choruses.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 08:57 (twelve years ago) link
missy's entire career was basically an outlier in terms of both the sounds she got on the charts and her image, right? and i guess what this nicki hand-wringing is about is the desire for her also to be a successful outlier rather than pushing the envelope in some areas and then capitulating in others. or maybe she genuinely does like shitty pop, who knows.
possibly more pressure put on popular female rappers to "change the game" in a way that no male rapper, crossover or not, is asked to do?
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 09:14 (twelve years ago) link
I get the feeling that if Nicki pitched to the middle ground of the Pink Friday bonus tracks more often she'd have a much more satisfying career all round really. I dunno, in 2012 is it *that* hard to have credible hip-hop that also works as amazing pop music or is it just a failure of imagination of all concerned?
― Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 09:20 (twelve years ago) link
I get the feeling that if Nicki pitched to the middle ground of the Pink Friday bonus tracks more often she'd have a much more satisfying career all round really
actually, this is why i'm so satisfied with PF:RR not pitching to any middle ground - she goes to extremes in both directions, perhaps understanding that "super bass" was kind of accidental genius that can't be deliberately recreated (telling that the actual attempt to recreate it here, "va va voom", is just kinda okay whereas the accidental genius occurs on "gun shot").
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 09:23 (twelve years ago) link
I'm not suggesting rewriting Super Bass again and again - Gun Shot is the best thing here because it avoids the annoying polarisation of the rest of the record, also it's a wonderful song with actual competent songwriting unlike the rest of the pop tracks here.
― Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 09:30 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah I'd have been super happy if she'd tried her hand at a few more "Muny" or "Wave Ya Hand" style tracks.

― Tim F, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 10:27 (twelve years ago) link
Not that I'm unhappy with Roman Reloaded - it's def. better than the first album.
Also I'm less sure that it's a case of 'accidental genius' and more that Nicki doesn't know where her strengths lie wrt pop music. It's less a case of asking her to recreate a great pop moment and more a case of not giving a free pass to the sort of shonky toss that passes for pop music here.

hmm "wave ya hand" and "muny", good as they are, don't really do what j0rdan (and the rest of us i guess) are wanting nicki to do - they're fairly ordinary pop beats (that tbh still suffer from the over-stuffed tinniness that 99% of pop beats have in the past few years) elevated by nicki's charisma rather than nicki matching the beats in craziness.
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 10:37 (twelve years ago) link
also it's worth remembering that while most of us itt and most critics are (correctly) repelled by shit like "starships", it's actually a massive fucking hit - nicki's first solo top 3 hit in the UK - and the people sustaining nicki's megastardom are actually REALLY INTO her pop side as it currently stands.
i mean i can't really get over that. "stupid hoe", which was actually the intended lead single - total flop. "starships" - the desperate generic crap tossed out when "stupid hoe" flopped - gigantic hit. i absolutely blame the pop climate and the pop audience.

havent got the time or the will to properly sentence this up, just gonna stream of consciousness it so caveat lector
think the same way that hooks and loud mastering has to *pop* on radio immediately these days so the artist's personality is way more upfront and centre foregrounded in your face than the music. weird kind of bifurcation between singer and song where people demand more crazy than ever from the singer but are happy to remain within a generic shorthand musically. listen to the big missy charisma cuts compared to nu nicki and the songs are *flatter* in this regard, missy darts in and among her music and the persona is illustrated and tied far more in with it. there's greater unity in all the elements, less distance between foreground and background stagewise
(think this is true of many things now besides just straight pop btw, cf rick ross (the rap lana del ray) or trey songz or whoever really)
if we take 'gunshot', it's a song far more in tune with the structure and grain of music as we grew up with, but it's obvious that it's a great poppy song, or "pop" song, rather than it is an ACTUAL pop song. listen to the radio for 20 minutes then put 'gun shot' on and it's comparatively drab and seems to take forever to get going, pleasant enough but the payoff is way too far down the line
i mean tbh i'm trying to talk on a level here but i'm really struggling and more than a little frightened if people can't understand why 'starships' is a hit and 'stupid hoe' isnt, or are imagining that nicki over 'slave 4 u' isnt a completely absurd idea and that they could ever somehow be compatible

^^^ I was expecting this reaction, which is why I hadn't played it. It was super surprising to me that I was actually into the first part of the album but the stretch from "Right By My Side" through "Automatic" has been forgettable at best and, at its worst, really fucking horrible.
"Beautiful Sinner" seems like a breath of fresh air in comparison for the first 40 seconds, which given how it goes into the chorus is really kind of pathetic.

The fact that they didn't go gold has nothing to do with their popularity and everything to do with when they came out, during the time between when CD singles were phased out of US markets and the rise of itunes.
― hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 19:03 (twelve years ago) link
Basically no singles went gold during that time except for American Idol-related stuff that wasn't getting airplay and only charting because of CD single sales. It was an all or nothing proposition.

sharships is a grower for sure. she's the rap equivalent of prince, and starships is her "i wanna be your lover" but if the label keeps her on through the slow-sales-critical-acclaim and lets her do her own thing eventually she's gonna come at us with something insanely unstoppable?
i tried this argument on with someone yesterday and they countered "or, maybe she's great for a guest verse but just doesn't have it in her to be a mega pop star" and i was thinking well maybe this could be true too, but then they said "also i don't really like prince" and i was like THEN UR ARGUEMTN IS CLEARLY INVALID!!! and quickly changed the subject

I realize this is like a million and one videos, but for some reason in this one it really bothers me that Nicki is dressed like a stripper while the two dudes look normal. Really feel like there's been this creeping tendency in Nicki's stuff towards more and more sexualization of her body. And I realize that's been there for a long while but it was often cross-dosed with her being deliberately weird and OTT-looking. I'm thinking of the drag-queen vibe in "Massive Attack" or about half of "Stupid Hoe"...felt like between that, Gaga, and actually a goodly part of Ke$ha's career,* there was this nice trend of female pop stars who were willing to curdle the camera's hard-on, and now that's sort of dissipated (although it was probably just in my mind to begin with).
* Ke$ha obviously just as rife with exceptions as Minaj, but I'm thinking of things like the drag-queen look in "We R Who We R" or the expressly non-sexy glow paint sequence in "Your Love Is My Drug," and just generally the amount of clothing she always had on despite lyrical themes that would seem to veer close to "wild party time" stuff. And who was it that pointed that "Blow" went out of its way to never have anything to do with blowjobs (or cocaine for that matter) and was just about raving good times?

That's the part with Nicki (or lookalike) passing back and forth in the background, nearly naked and spray-painted gold, right? Yeah, not buying that that's an equally sexualized presentation, if you were serious. It's just really striking in all the shots when it's the three of them together, like it was a prank and somebody told her it was a themed "naughty costume" party.

haha no it doesn't. unless you don't know what the word "explicit" means.
so tired of nicki doing a million variations on "my son" punchlines, which barely made sense in the first place.

the softly sung chorus with the cheesy guitar >>>>

Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded - The Re-Up Tracklist1. Up In Flames2. Freedom3. Hell Yeah4. High School5. I’m Legit6. I Endorse These Strippers7. The Boys Ft. Cassie8. Va Va Voom
well, I don't think there's any doubt as to which of these is the most anticipated

Is it really? I mean I haven't been following Nicki much as of late but I can't remember anything else I've heard from her that sounds this mature. It's nice to know she can strip away the growls and snarls and monotone babbles and create something great w/o relying on all of these borderline-goofy affectations.
― goya cézanne (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 9 November 2012 19:08 (eleven years ago) link
IMO the borderline-goofy affectations are what make her interesting/distinctive/worth listening to
― I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Friday, 9 November 2012 19:12 (eleven years ago) link
it's like saying "oh man, listen to this amazing new Busta Rhymes track, he raps really slowly on it and doesn't roar like a dungeon dragon once"; who goes to Busta Rhymes for that?
― I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Friday, 9 November 2012 19:13 (eleven years ago) link
dont know if that capability has really been so in doubt xxp
maybe i'm being harsh but it doesnt really code all that mature either, i mean everyone does a woes of fame/lonely me on the top braggin cut and they're p much just as plastic and exaggerated as the cartoon grr party stuff they go hand in hand with
― r|t|c, Friday, 9 November 2012 19:18 (eleven years ago) link
Well sure, you can have your own signature things and all but there are different levels of specificity and after like 20 or so singles w/ signature things that are so specific it starts to get a bit "eh". I mean, I don't dislike her or anything, I just don't find it so compelling anymore, and it's nice when she can pull off something else so flawlessly.
― goya cézanne (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 9 November 2012 19:21 (eleven years ago) link
I mean, musically flawless at least. xp yeah, it's not the freshest thing ever to do a woes of fame/lonely me track but I'd argue it's not nearly as plastic as the cartoon grr party stuff

the re-up = a victory lap
all deluxe re-releases are victory laps, almost by definition. the original Roman Reloaded was pretty much a victory lap itself, though. she's just running in circles.

But I will leave you with this anecdote from Drake about one of his first encounters with Miss Minaj, who he had a major crush on:
"I remember one of the first nights that we were out in Miami and I went to Jerry’s. I was like, ‘You want food, you hungry?,’ and she was like, ‘Yeah, I want some food.’ I was like, ‘I’m in, we gon’ eat food together.’ I came to her door and she took the food and shut the door in my face! I was just like, ‘Man, this is gonna be a long road for us.’"

― My Buddy® of sexting (DJP), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 16:07 (ten years ago) link
do people really question nicki's technical skill as a rapper?
that seems really silly to me.
she's obviously concocted this entire pop mythology and weird stylistic quirks around that in her delivery but, at heart, she's a New York technician IMO.
― hello :) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 16:39 (ten years ago) link
also are we discussing this so not gonna happen kinda lol but mostly sad DJ khaled proposing to nicki thing?
― hello :) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 16:44 (ten years ago) link
I feel like there's a long tradition of people (men and women) assuming female rappers can't rap by default. You don't really need to compare Nicki to guys who do something completely different from her to make the point that she has skills (esp when one of those people is terrible).
― My Buddy® of sexting (DJP), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 16:44 (ten years ago) link
i posted the vid on a Khaled thread but i don't think we really discussed it. it's hilarious but obv a joke/stunt to promote their new singles together so w/e.
Nicki's flow and vocal ability are crazy but if 'technical skill' encompasses the ability to consistently put together words that rhyme and make sense and sound good, she's pretty erratic. and her 'serious' verses are generally dull as dirt. compared to most of her contemporaries still pretty near the top, though.
― Some-D (some dude), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 16:51 (ten years ago) link
yeah i guess i don't necessarily mean "technical skill" (in this sense) as a positive or negative term...I just mean in terms of being able to deliver rhymes very quick, crisply, etc etc....I'm not saying like Chino XL is the greatest rapper of all time or anything...but Nicki is definitely "skilled" in that sense, I guess I don't feel super strongly about her other than I enjoy her being around when I hear her, so I leave it to others to evaluate her as a rapper on the whole.
― hello :) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 16:58 (ten years ago) link
I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but Nicki Minaj raps her verse on the upcoming Big Sean album as a crack mom, and it is truly, truly abhorrent
