That Professor Green person.....is he for real? What in the world.......

Sam Weller, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 19:13 (2 years ago) Permalink

I mean I know it's oftentimes fun to have an opinion and tell everyone how much their music is terrible and etc., but I rarely do it because I realize there must be SOMETHING redeeming for so many people to like it.

That being said: what the fuck, are these a joke? Like, everyone is always saying "no, THIS is the worst, IT'S SO BAD! WE'VE HIT ROCK BOTTOM!", but when you look back, things like Soulja Boy Tell 'Em are just painfully uninspired and mediocre. This stuff ("No Love", "Live Your Life", "Sugar") is actually embarrassing; what are these people hearing when they're tapping culturally-shunned "dorky" music and attempting to reappropriate it into the realm of integrity or thoughtfulness? And that's not to say the songs that are being sampled are bad BECAUSE they're dorky, but rather that they're dorky because not only are they too uninspired and mediocre, but also dated. And then being used as some sort of reference point---why??????

Tori, I must seem greatly intriguing (Stevie D), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 19:17 (2 years ago) Permalink

this thread needs a poll. every time I think I've reached rock bottom, I click on another one and... jeeze.

ლ support our troops ლ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 19:25 (2 years ago) Permalink

i'm shocked "barbie girl" hasn't already happened

this stuff accounts for a horribly large percentage of "urban" stuff that charts, at some point in the past few years people realised that a recognisable, unsubtle, super-cheesy sample will sell by the bucketload - who to, i don't like to think - and since then it's pretty much been a race to the bottom

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 19:27 (2 years ago) Permalink

imo rihanna singing the numa numa melody was fly, they flipped it and made it so pop it didn't really matter where it was from

some dude, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 19:31 (2 years ago) Permalink

like probably the only person involved in the making of that song who knew about the numa dance was just blaze, and i imagine him just having fun and laughing his ass off while making it

I'm less appalled by "Live Your Life" than most of this stuff but maybe just desensitized thru repeated exposure? I guess I'll check back w/ this thread in a year or so to see whether "Young Forever" still makes my skin crawl, and we'll have our answer.

INSUFFICIENT FUN (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 20:54 (2 years ago) Permalink

"Whatcha Say" is great sample use, I agree with Whiney, and so is "Live Your Life," if only because it's just Blaze sampling fucking "Dragostea Din Tei."

Blaze isn't nearly as successful with "No Love." It's just too corny of a sample, and the flip is still a little obvious. It almost works, though.

Also, some dude, the original song was already pop, so how exactly did Rihanna flip it into pop? I think it's great, I just don't understand your statement.

rennavate, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 20:58 (2 years ago) Permalink

Sort of love how unorganic the chorus is, and how they didn't bother to add anything to the original Heart song.

Some dude otm re: "Live Your Life" also "Changes" is superclassic (altho both admitedly colored by the fact I heard both before the sampled songs).

I liked this awesome Flo Rida track called "Ghetto Techno" that I heard before "Low" hit and then wasn't even on his album, but that's it, pretty much. Most of his hits have been fun radio jams the first dozen times I heard them but kind of intolerable afterwards.

rev, iirc you gave either/both of "sugar" and "right round" good reviews on the jukebox?

first flo rida thing i ever heard was also an awesome track that didn't end up on the album called "birthday". will also rep for "low" and "in the ayer" but he's been reprehensible since he discovered eurocheese samples.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 11:58 (2 years ago) Permalink

Didn't review "Right Round". Said this about "Sugar":

I have no idea whether or when this will start to get on my nerves, but what occurs to me in the meantime is that the great thing about Flo is how completely unabashed of a sellout he is. He makes no bones of his pop-ness, because it ain’t no thang to him. I get the impression that the T.I.s of the world at least feel an appropriate measure of pious embarassment when attempting to pull off shit like this.

As it turned out, "whether" was "yes" and "when" was "soon".
