i actively like "i get crazy" & "shakin it 4 daddy"

"lil freak" is pretty bad, and i feel the same way about "5 star bitch rmx" as i do about all ALL STAR remixes of the past few years, which is ambivalence (aside from the horrifying "i wanna rock" interstate trafficking rmx or w/e)

"bedrock" is a totally terrible song, the beat & hook are way too annoying to even be in it for the lolz -- i'm voting for "my chick bad" tho, which could've been great, esp coming off the success of "how low", but that's just an utterly creatively bankrupt song

the only one I hear on the radio is "Bedrock" and it's the only one of these that I've both heard and actively dislike, so pretty easy decision

a lot of ny rap/pop writers are stanning for this woman like she's something significantly more than a court jester, or that she posses any talent beyond parlaying ho-rap photoshoots into a fake lady gaga schtik that is noteworthy because rap and pop music is totally devoid of personality, even annoying manufactured ones like this. she can spit a hot verse or two but most of the time she just sounds like a 6 year old who hasn't been diagnosed with ADD. she's an alright radio presence cuz it's genuinely funny to listen to her rap now, and there is a slight chance that she'll say something dope, but acting like there's anything beyond that is really fishing for angles where there aren't any. mainstream rap writers missed out on gucci mane & propping nicki up ain't gonna cut it.

articles like that that are that breathlessly enthusiastic about random throwaway references and punchlines crack me up, I imagine the writer sitting down with a quill pen, and pausing the CD after every 4 bars to go "how delightful! how perfectly droll!!" and transcribe another line.

I'm so 3000-and-8080 (The Reverend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 11:06 (fourteen years ago) link

i like that slate piece! def nails down at least part of what's special about nicki. idk sometimes when she gets too cartoonish i wish she'd play it straight more often, b/c she's really good at that, but then the weird voices and gaga schtick often lead to greatness like "saxon" or "fuck u silly" - for a persona that could be super-grating she still has a really impressive hit-rate. of the joints polled here i only actively dislike "bedrock", don't care about "5 star bitch", her bits are the best bits of "lil freak" and the others are all really good.

i mean i guess it's easy to mock b/c her worst moments are pretty awful but things like "hedgehog, sonic the" or "bedrock" aren't really representative of what minaj does.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 11:10 (fourteen years ago) link

the new school of super female-friendly poptimism has been overly kind to her the same way it was to Lil Mama a couple years ago, imo. and that should mean something coming from someone known for overrating Ebony Eyez! people complain about the climate for female rappers but in general the people that have gotten a shot over the past 10 years (Trina, Remy Ma, Ms. Jade, Shawnna) have been pretty solid rappers, you have to go back to like Amil to find anyone indisputably less talented than Nicki/Mama.

some dude, Thursday, 25 February 2010 11:12 (fourteen years ago) link

did anyone really overrate lil mama? "lip gloss" and "shawty get loose" were awesome pop songs, no one really cared about the album or indeed where her career is now.

as for nicki, i think it's pretty undeniable that she's got skills - her "normal" flow is super-tight and half her voices work really well, and she has quotable lines for days - but right now i think she's actively trying to become even more distinct in carving out this persona for which there's no real model - it'd be one thing if she was embarrassing herself more often than not, but the good shit still outweighs the missteps.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 11:19 (fourteen years ago) link

and ms jade, seriously? i liked a couple of her tracks and she could obviously rap but there was pretty much nothing distinctive about her.

it's pretty obvious that nicki thinks imprinting a larger-than-life persona on listeners will be crucial for her to establish a toehold in the mainstream, and she's probably right; and taking on elements of gaga rather than reprising the cheerful/terrifying smuttiness of lil kim or trina is probably a savvy decision too (plus more true to herself, her lyrics have never been as indebted to ho-rap as her image). like gaga this means moments of cringing at times - it's fucking terrible that "bedrock" will be most people's introductions to her - but hopefully what's appealing about her will win out in the end.

Matt DC, Thursday, 25 February 2010 11:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe we should wait until, y'know, an actual album comes out before attempting to call any kind of critical consensus here?

Matt DC, Thursday, 25 February 2010 11:26 (fourteen years ago) link

apparently her first official single drops next week?

I'm so 3000-and-8080 (The Reverend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 11:30 (fourteen years ago) link

I've already decided to like it, given that she's a girl and everything.

Matt DC, Thursday, 25 February 2010 11:42 (fourteen years ago) link

i dunno, the media hype for Lil Mama felt pretty over the top at the time (when she first hit, before album delays and a terrible follow up single killed her momentum), especially in circles that weren't really giving a shit about teenage dance rap otherwise, even in the year of "Crank That."

some dude, Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Matt, she has a popular mixtape and half a dozen songs in rotation on the radio, holding your breath until there's an official album to have certain discussions about new rappers is pretty pointless these days

some dude, Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:13 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah srsly come on matt, don't front on the kernel of truth.

anyway i am voting for the mariah remix, cos 1. even though i can't recall/haven't heard minaj's other verses listed here i cannot comprehend any of them being stupider and more irritating than this one, and 2. the remix itself with its video also represents everything that's wrong with mariah these days - ruining a good song with this inept, inane pursuit of attention and leaning so hard on this cutesy in-joke babygirl shit all the fucking time for no discernable reason.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:14 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah her verse on the Mariah song is especially gruesome, i think in part because she's in a lower register than usual and almost sounds like some kind of parody of 90s Lil Kim

some dude, Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:19 (fourteen years ago) link

actually now i look at it i could say similar for the usher, thicke, luda - minaj in her own lane i can handle and even kinda enjoy in some ways, but her inadvertant distortion of the people hiring her swag is what really grates.

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:19 (fourteen years ago) link

lol that ladypoptimist talk reminded me - forks is it time to compare notes yet?

Teyana Taylor's 'Google Me'

r|t|c, Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:25 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah --- i thought about not including "I Get Crazy" here both because it peaked a while ago and because it's a lot less annoying to me than the others in part because it's more her doing her than established stars just jumping on the next big post-Drake bandwagon

some dude, Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:27 (fourteen years ago) link

weirdly the video actually made me come round slightly to the mariah verse - i think the problem there is more that any guest verse would rupture "up out my face" unnecessarily

i wonder if she consciously goes into OTT mode for bigger artists who are going to get a lot more attention, b/c her guest spots on lloyd's "take it off", cassie's "fuck u silly", mya's "ponytail" and obv the unofficial "sweet dreams" one are all completely amazing and don't have the slight grating quality that rtc pinpoints for her mariah/usher ones.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2010 12:32 (fourteen years ago) link

not too sure about that - i couldve imagined being mildly entertained by maybe a lowkey fabolous verse on 'up out my face' for instance but no way would it have been a panicking misguided conceptual reboot the way the minaj version is.

"bedrock" is awful too but I love the chorus and nicki's verse so that gets a pass... and "Lil Freak" is my single of the year so far and I'm really confused as to why no one here seems to like it.......... anyway Nicki is the best part of all of these songs besides "Up Out My Face"

Voted "Bedrock" btw but I haven't heard a couple of the others. In twenty years when TV shows make fun of 2010s "Minajamania," that's the song that'll get played so whatev.

I kinda like bits of what she does when I hear them but GOD is she unbearable on video. Her bits on "Up Out My Face" for example are kinda okay - it's like seeing her make the goofy faces and camp it up really calls attention to how affected the goofy voices and campy rapping is. Which OK, is about what you'd expect somebody to do but I wish it was delivered more po-facedly. Just reminds me of high-school sketch comedy or local improv night, trying too damn hard.

i dunno i like the idea of having more control over what to listen to. the local stations here tended to do stuff in 2001 like play Ginuwine's "My Whole Life has Changed" and Usher's "U Got It Bad" every hour on the hour, and I liked both songs but it was like how many times did I need to hear it in a day?

Ballistic, Saturday, 27 February 2010 17:47 (fourteen years ago) link

and like even though i "listened to more records than christgau" (or whatever that article said) in 2009, that was still 100% via promo CDs and pirated zips and rars from leak blogs. i heard 1,000 ALBUMS, not singles.

i literally have no way of hearing a "hot single" unless i turn off what i'm listening to and click a YouTube link.

not being glib or anything, but u guys should get like a little walkman or clock radio or one of those waterproof dealies that can go in the shower, imo a few minutes a day of radio listening is nice. tbh i don't know why FM radios aren't part of the package with iPods, i know why include a dead technology with the hot new thing etc. but it seems like a no-brainer to me.

Not really a "no-brainer" since Apple wants you to fill your iPod with songs you pay them money for, not listen to for free. But I totally agree w/ your premise. Kicking back with the FM radio now and then can be a good thing.

Actually it raises the question, to what extent has Gaga been influenced by the aforementioned high-profile female rappers of the 90s/00s? Like it seems a pretty reasonable thing to interrogate, esp. re Lil' Kim and Missy, but I haven't run across anyone writing about that. Are people just more comfortable linking her up to Peaches or whatever indie electro type person, or has Gaga herself emphasized other lines of influence? (Or, I guess, is the connection all in my head?)

kinda crossing over w/ the bedrock thread w/ this post but since it's about "my chick bad" i figured it might as well go in here

anyway the spring break performance of "my chick bad" is so funny

http://www.musicistheheartofoursoul.com/2010/03/mtv-spring-break-2010-performances.html

first of all, for some reason minaj is yelling her verse and it seems like she can't really find her footing in these massive heels, so it comes off like an amy poehler parody or something

also the best part is that her fembot routine gets thrown off by people accidentally batting beach balls at her

history tayne (crüt), Friday, 14 May 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

the thing about that line is that it would work for me alright if she didn't also say "friday the 13th and guess who's playing jason," putting both those references in the first in the exact same construction feels so amateurish and lazy.

i have a grudging respect for the uncompromising schtick overload of "Massive Attack" but "Your Love" is just such a lame-ass retreat in the other direction.

"Massive Attack" is a lot stickier than I would have expected the first time I heard it. I have "Mmmassive attack! Mmmmassive attack!" and "Tom toms over here bigger than a monster/ Blak! Blak! Blaka!" stuck in my head all the time, which doesn't quite translate into me wanting to listen to it.

I have the same relationship with "Massive Attack" that Rev does, I think. The problem is that so little of the stuff between those headsticky points is particularly memorable.

"My Chick Bad," yeah... it's not the worst thing I've ever heard, but it's sorta uninspired and you'd think Ludacris of all people could do so much more with that premise! The references are really blah - she always brings a racket like Venus and Serena? Okay, yeah, I get the joke but is that as bad as your chick gets, Luda? Compare to "What's Your Fantasy?" and there's been a real loss of energy.

I maintain that it should have been a battle song with another male rapper, with them arguing over whose chick was badder... and then we get to Nicki's verse and we realize that she's BOTH their chicks! Or something.

yeah it is kinda cool -- like even before when there were rumors or speculation about other female rappers being gay or bi, it tended to be treated as a stigma or a dirty little secret.

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 24 July 2010 15:42 (thirteen years ago) link

the entirety of her "lil freak" verse is spitting game to a female and she talks about signing boobs more than any popular artist since '80s hair metal. but yeah i wouldn't be one bit surprised if it's just a public image thing as part of her sex appeal, i'm just saying that when people talked about Remy Ma or Latifah of MC Lyte being possibly gay it tended to be in a "EW SHE A DYKE" way.

some dude, Saturday, 24 July 2010 15:59 (thirteen years ago) link

i think minaj acknowledging and repping for her gay fanbase is more cause for applause than her bisexuality, which i don't even know if she's talked about in detail beyond the usual female celebrity "i find women attractive too" stuff - like i have no idea if she's being a lipstick lesbian (no problem w/that if she is) or if she actually identifies as bisexual

i love nicki's verse on the super-generic new trey songz single, really emphasises the ventriloquist nature of her schtick - she keeps spinning out into one of her weird voices, leading you over there, and then every time suddenly snaps back into a really tight flow over here. plus about a quarter of it seems to be nicki shouting "FUCK HER! FUCK HER! FUCK HER!"

it also bothers me that on "omg" usher just sounds like a will body double & on this joint nicki is just playing the role of fergie -- there's no collaboration... it's just grafting other pop stars onto black eyed peas songs -- with usher it felt a bit more okay because he had already showed that he was just gonna jump on whatever trend could keep his career alive, but with nicki i feel like there should be more of a meeting of a minds than what this is

also her rap verse shouldn't be buried after 3 mins of will.i.am

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:01 (thirteen years ago) link

that factor is way more depressing on "omg" probably because usher can do way more than he does and it feels like he's really limiting himself. i don't feel like nikki ends up as subsumed, but i don't think "check it out" sounds that much like a bep song. really, it's more in line with will's last solo album, which i liked most of.

i don't really care how this fits into nikki's career arc tho.

ehh early em was a lot more playful, w/ good punchlines that had lots of creative metaphors (like form like voltron and blast you w my shoulder missiles to pick one I was just listening too)

i don't really listen to any of the people you referred to and i'm not exactly a poster boy for casting aside old rappers. i'm just saying, picking the occasional defensible nu-Em or nu-Jay track and championing it as THE BEST OF THE BEST just looks so square that even if you think you're right you should probably be ready to take some shit for it

His faggot baiting is more obnoxious than ever, but he's just as good at being obnoxious as he was in 2000, if that makes sense; and paired with Minaj it's a real competition. They foil each other perfectly. In addition, Minaj's "playing a character" shows up how poorly the difference between Em and Slim Shady looks like in 2010.

Roman's Revenge would have made my Pazz and Jop were it a single in 2010.

it was released as a standalone thing on halloween. are we really still stuck on old-skool definitions of "single"?

i love bits of eminem's verses - beginning and end of the first one especially, and how he reworks the chorus ("make that face, go on, scrunch it up at me/show me the target so i can LUNGE AND ATTACK IT"), but between that he kind of falls off the beat and tries to get too many words in. his second verse is ehhhh, though i do like how the faggot line is accompanied by the one moment of sonic pretty girlishness.

every moment nicki's on the mic is astonishing to hear and to rap along to, she sounds unhinged, and the beat is insane. top 4 moments:

1. the outraged vibrato on "i see them dusty-ass FILAAAS, LEVIIIIS, raggedy-ass HOLES IN YOUR KNEE-HIIIIGHS" that reminds me of missy's guest spot on trina's "rewind that back"
2. "i'm a BAD BITCH - i'm a CUNT" - what other rapper has even gone there with the c word
3. "OVERSEAS / CHURCH / VATICAN" - beyond the grocery bag and off the deep end
4. "M-M-M-M-MANNING ELI" - hearing his names in the right order feels completely wrong now

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Saturday, 15 January 2011 08:05 (thirteen years ago) link

3. "OVERSEAS / CHURCH / VATICAN" - beyond the grocery bag and off the deep end

^^ i actually agree w/ this -- same thing with "hang it up... flat screen... plasma"

J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 08:08 (thirteen years ago) link

i realized that my original problem w/ grocery bagging was not how lame the punchlines were or how the structure highlighted them, but just that it was such a boring & monotonous way to rap, just very assembly line -- the triple bagging sort of subverts that tho in a way that's kinda free form

J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 08:10 (thirteen years ago) link

also her grocery bagging in the second verse doesn't even consist of punchlines, it's literally just random words hurled at the beat, but i love how it actually ends up making a fragmented kind of sense where you get to fill in the bits in between, and that it really conveys a sense of menace - the lunatic asylum of mumbling/cackling connects to the mass hysteria of scared/shook/panicking that leads into the need to pray combined w/all the sinister connotations of vatican...

"hardest diss track in forever" is pretty ridic

― some dude, Friday, January 14, 2011 7:10 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark

the thing about the song is that it's a great diss track in an unconventional way. obv there are only a few lines shot directly at kim and certainly no "takeover" style point-by-point breakdown (which would be unnecessary anyway), but it's still a very aggressive & confrontational track. like, just the general theme of the track & the medieval via bowser's castle flourishes during the chorus, right down to 'rah rah/ like a dungeon dragon' create just a very sinister & foreboding atmosphere that, in combination w/ the fact that we KNOW that it's about kim, elevate nicki's threats & taunts -- and she does say she'll put a hit out on her!

J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 08:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Tim F, Sunday, 3 April 2011 09:09 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah idk what's an official single or not -- i have a feeling that "roman's revenge" & "did it on em" are not official singles bcuz neither is edited for radio beyond straight silencing of the curses but that isn't exactly scientific of course

oh yeah i've heard the drake/nicki song off 'thank me later' ("what bitch you know made a million off a mixtape?") on the radio twice in the past two days

lex pretend, Sunday, 3 April 2011 09:16 (thirteen years ago) link

"Did It On Em" is definitely an official single -- i mean it's already in the top 10 of the R&B chart. basically it's been "Your Love," "Right Thru Me," "Moment 4 Life," then that, but since it's a huge hit album obv other songs are gonna get videos or pockets of airplay. it's rare these days any rap album keeps getting promoted w/ singles once it's been out 6 months, though, so no idea if anything will get a big push after "Did It On Em" runs its course.
