ILX Wire Covers Compilation 2010

Okay let's do this thing. There seems to about eight people interested so far.

Stake your claim to titles here (of course it doesn't matter if two ILXors want to cover the same song.)

Once we've gotten the list together we can then discuss timings etc:

So, first off I plant my flag in 'Boiling Boy', it was the first Wire V2 song I heard (the Peel session version) loved it unreservedly then felt a bit let down by the proper album version, although the one on IBTABA was better. Had to wait ages for it be released on Coatings.

Joe Pass Filter (MaresNest), Saturday, 13 February 2010 08:42 (fourteen years ago) link

i will definitely be involved, but will need to confer with my musical compadre as to what song to do

twice remembered / twice removed (electricsound), Saturday, 13 February 2010 08:49 (fourteen years ago) link

If he doesn't do "Dot Dash", make a video of it including his Dot Dash Dance and put it up on YouTube, I'll fly down and glass him.

Hangin' with Tommy Cooper (King Boy Pato), Saturday, 13 February 2010 08:53 (fourteen years ago) link

I've got "I am the fly"

Fetchboy, Saturday, 13 February 2010 09:00 (fourteen years ago) link

and what would you do if this ended up with a series of gently ironic nouvelle vague type pastoral tropicalia pink flag covers?

nakhchivan, Saturday, 13 February 2010 15:37 (fourteen years ago) link

He would shrug and say "What a well-made world."

On the other thread Sean C. suggested I do "Ambitious," which I'm more than fine with -- if someone else does the music.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 February 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link

(Not a slam on Sean of course! More meaning that my own musical abilities are immeasurable in their nonexistence.)

Count me in on this, I'll choose a song in the next day or so. Um, are instrumental versions of vocal songs ok? My skills do NOT lie in singing.

Ork Alarm (Matt #2), Saturday, 13 February 2010 17:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Vocoder!

Joe Pass Filter (MaresNest), Saturday, 13 February 2010 18:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i think i'm up for this. i'll give it a try anyway.

da Wesley CRUSHER (latebloomer), Saturday, 13 February 2010 19:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I think I'll do either "Brazil" or "Being Sucked In Again"

da Wesley CRUSHER (latebloomer), Saturday, 13 February 2010 19:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Want to do "Ahead"!

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 13 February 2010 22:28 (fourteen years ago) link

(Not a slam on Sean of course!

Well I never!

More meaning that my own musical abilities are immeasurable in their nonexistence.)

Oh okay then. But hey, you have my permission to do any song you like.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 13 February 2010 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Already done 'Ex Lion Tamer', 'Silk Skin Paws' and C. Newman's 'Alone' with band.

'Ahead' has been taken... Maybe 'A Serious of Snakes'... Will get back on this.

hmm. I may join in. If I do it'll prob be "French Film Blurred"

François de Roobabe (Capitaine Jay Vee), Sunday, 14 February 2010 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Question: is the listing the same songs that were covered on "Whore", or is it free for all as far as which Wire songs?

millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 14 February 2010 23:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Anything I'm guessing.

Anyone going to take 'Mary Is A Dyke' or 'NYC'?

Department of Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification (S-), Sunday, 14 February 2010 23:43 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm thinking me and Rob might do one - I'd like to do "Kidney Bingoes" or "King of Ur & Queen of Um" but I need to skim some tracks and decide, so thats just a tentative one for me so far.

millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 14 February 2010 23:44 (fourteen years ago) link

'Our Swimmer' pls

I could try that Pato, but a). High beam switch in current car is foot operated, not on a stalk b). Chrysler is more than double the size of the Toyota (however power steering), will need to find a different rhythm c). Having already spent some time without a licence it might not be such a Good Idea.

can i join in please? i don't know 100% what song yet welcome suggestions!

What's the deadline going to be? I'd like to do "Marooned." Or "French Film Blurred" if Jay Vee drops out.

Hardcore Homecare (staggerlee), Monday, 15 February 2010 02:23 (fourteen years ago) link

actually changed my mind, doing 'The 15th'!!

Changed my mind, also. I'd like to do "Go Ahead" off Doc/Eyewitness

François de Roobabe (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 15 February 2010 02:28 (fourteen years ago) link

OK, I'm in and I'm on for "Too Late"

Mark G, Monday, 15 February 2010 09:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Here is our list so far, including the undecided.

Fetchboy - I Am The Fly
M Bison - 12XU
MaresNest - Boiling Boy
Latebloomer - Brazil or Being Sucked In Again
Sean C - Ahead
Elvis Telecom - Marooned
Matt#2 - Practice Makes Perfect
Paul In Santa Cruz/Ned Ragget - Ambitious
Capitaine Jay Vee - Go Ahead
(S-) - Our Swimmer
Trayce - Kidney Bingos or The King of Ur and the Queen of Um
Ken C - The 15th
Mark G - Too Late

Like I mentioned upthread, don't get hung up if more than one person wants to do a particular track, the difference in interpretation would be just as interesting.

To answer Trayce, any Wire song is fair game. Heck if you wanted to do version of a Colin Newman/Duet Emmo/Mzui/Dome/8Time or any other solo configuration go right ahead.

Also, what do you all think would be a fair deadline? (which will of course be broken) One month? Two?

Hopefully before the titles for the next U2 album are leaked!

So for anyone who might be speeding ahead, send files or rapidshare/ftp links to my PM addy. Best quality files possible would be great, WAV/FLAC/AIFF/SHN whatever.

If MP3 then please ensure it's as close to 320kbps as you can get. Don't forget to include any details you might want for the artwork/text.

Joe Pass Filter (MaresNest), Monday, 15 February 2010 10:29 (fourteen years ago) link

You Weaked It! (MaresNest), Monday, 15 February 2010 16:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Hey Wire songs are really easy to work out, I never realised! The last thing a did for a tribute record was by Moondog, that was a bitch. Doing something different with a Wire song that's still good rather than a slavish cover version, not so easy.

Ork Alarm (Matt #2), Monday, 15 February 2010 16:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Were working up to the ILX Yes covers project 2043

That can be the bonus vinyl 7" that isn't pressed up.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 15 February 2010 18:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Meantime I have to give this thread/project credit for causing me to find out that someone's posted the remix of "Ambitious" from the "Silk Skin Paws" single on Youtube:

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 18 February 2010 00:40 (fourteen years ago) link

To be truthful, I'm not really sure how long would be a reasonable amount of time to say.
How about we wing it for now until a few more come in, then I can start pleading.
I suppose a decent ballpark for those that require one would be say, another 3/4 weeks perhaps.

You Weaked It! (MaresNest), Thursday, 18 February 2010 00:48 (fourteen years ago) link

You Weaked It! (MaresNest), Friday, 5 March 2010 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link

The eternal question! But I do think we should publicize it a bit because why not?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 March 2010 17:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Couple o questions re. submitting the stuff:

1) Are 24-bit files OK, or should it be 16-bit?

2) Do you want the files mastered in any sort of way? Bus limiting/multiband/et al?

Feel free to master your mix, I wasn't planning to master the whole collection, but I will polish any tracks up a little if I think they really require it, which will obviously become clearer when all the tracks come in, so-far the quality has been great.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Thursday, 15 April 2010 12:48 (fourteen years ago) link

For submissions it was agreed the deadline would be the end of this week, then I'll need a little while to formailse the text/tracklist and the sequencing then finish the artwork, plus I'm away from work most of next week, so if you push into the middle of next week, it's probably no biggie.

Any later than that and it might get a little sticky if we want to make this available as soon as possible.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 20 April 2010 15:14 (fourteen years ago) link

XP - I guess it's a little late for strategic planning and focus groups, but I'd be very interested to hear both versions, I'm sure everyone else would too. As I said upthread, I am on holiday until the end of the week so I guess everyone has until Saturday.

BTW, some people have submitted band names and some not so when I lay out the tracklisting text I was intending to format it like this:

1. Bandname - Song Title (ILXHandle)

as well as

1. ILXHandle - Song Title

for those without a bandname.

Is this cool with everyone? I know it's a little clunky, but it being an ILX team effort I though peeps might like to know which ILXor was behind each track.

It's looking good dude - i have like a track now that i can submit right now if needs be but i'm going to spend tomorrow just to tweak it a bit but it'll get to you first thing saturday no doubt (i am in hong kong just now so have some timezone diff. advantage even!)

it's a little bit... lo-fi, i hope that's ok?? (there's only so much i can squeeze into the netbook running kristal with a 2nd hand spanish guitar i bought from a music shop for £8!!!)

Okay Paul n/p.

Whew, well unless there's any surprise late entries I think we may be there.

I'll do an final update to the list later on this eve, then I'll post the actual tracklist -with the real names- on Sunday evening, then we are looking pretty good for the whole thing to be made available the middle/end of next week.

Fetchboy - I Am The Fly

MaresNest - Boiling Boy
Latebloomer - Brazil
Sean C - Ahead
Elvis Telecom - Marooned
Matt#2 - Practice Makes Perfect
Paul In Santa Cruz/Ned Raggett - Ambitious

Ken C - The 15th

Philip Nunez - Outdoor Miner (Meower)
Edward III - Strange
Edward III - 106 Beats That
Get Bent - Mannequin

This is the final list, 19 tracks! Well done everybody!

StaggerLee, as a quick note, there is a little bit of clicking on your file, I know it's kinda LoFi and that's cool but doesn't sound like it's a file transfer glitchy sound, more like it's in the original recording. Can you check the file and see? I actually don't mind it at-all because it sounds like vinyl crackles.

Yeah, it's a fault/feature of the broken-and-breaking-down equipment I was working with. Ancient, not-very-well-taken-care-of Tascam 424 for the bed tracks, then played through a lousy stereo while I sing a live vocal into two microphones plugged into a really ancient Sony reel-to-reel 2-track. But the reel-to-reel had issues keeping the tape in the track, so I had to add tension by running the tape around a pencil before it hit the machine heads, which caused speed issues and the occasional click before devolving into a gimmick at the end.

Wish I'd redone the mix/vox a few more times - there's almost no bass and the drums are horrendously loud etc. but the reel-to-reel (being all but defunct anyway) is now at the recycling depot.

hey maresnest -

a couple of the mp3 files you have on the FTP site were converted at the wrong sample rate - 48000Hz instead of 44100Hz. sounds like a supernerdy point here but some mp3 players (like the one in my car!) are going to obey this value and play the tracks at a noticeably slower speed.

the ones that need fixing are "boiling boy" and "strange"

I uploaded a new version of mine here, or you can just reconvert if you like

'm thrilled my poll inspired this amazing effort!! Just listening to this now - unbelievable. I had no idea ILX was so talented!

Has anyone emailed Colin et al?

Ned has mentioned it upthread, I don't think anyone has yet. Would he be interested I wonder.. (Colin not Ned)

Well, I took the initiative and sent a quick Twitter message to Colin Newman (he's @headgit btw) letting him know about this and asking him nicely to please not sue us, and just got the following back, today:

@globalhermit Hey Sean I downloaded it some nice ideas :) Be very interested where you got the Austrian Radio thingy.

So uh, he's probably listened to everyone's contribution by now! Where DID that Austrian Radio thingy come from btw?

Hurrah!

Austrian - guess he means the bonus live show that was in the FTP directory...?

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 21 May 2010 12:06 (thirteen years ago) link

OK, now I'm interested...

(Not that I wasn't before, you know)..

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Wenlock & Mandelson (Tom D.), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:40 (thirteen years ago) link

I can only assume that MaresNest sequenced mine after the prettiest, most radio-friendly song on the whole comp out of some sense of gleeful anarchism

Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:43 (thirteen years ago) link

I pussied out a bit by not thinking too hard about the sequencing, I knew Ken's was first, Meower last, the multiples had to be far apart and yours and mine (being long assed) needed to be apart too, nowt beyond that.

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:50 (thirteen years ago) link

(that said, 'prettiest' even as meant in that sense is challenged by Sean, n/a, Elvis T and MaresNest...there's a lot of pretty, also a lot of kickass)

Hey - the sequencing's pretty good IMO! I'm not fussed at all; it doesn't seem too worked-out but it works, which is optimal. It works especially well as a double-album; each disc has a nice flow to it. ESOJ/S' one is quite long as well, btw ;-)

Reasons I don't want to do this:

1) I had a fantastic time doing this, it was like christmas every time a track arrived, and barring a few technicalities (i.e. a couple of tracks that were too long) I was able to incorporate everything I received into the final tracklisting, and every track was wonderful. It's not that 'you shouldn't revisit, next time would not be as good' it's more that someone else should have that kind of fun.

2) I was going to contribute a track last time, but ran out of time and/or inspiration, I forget which. Also, I would be either biased towards (or against) my track's placement (or lack of it), etc. Someone else needs to make that kind of decision.

3) Thesedays, I have less of an ILX presence. Having said that, if someone does kick Vol4 off, they'd better let me know. I missed out on the U2 and the Wire comps, but hey.

So, it's up for grabs.

Hmm, I might repost that message on a dedicated thread.
