Matt, I saw them at globalfest this year and was floored; i was told they were traditional mongolian music and freaked out when they sounded like Tull and Sabbath. The album is a good time and highly recommended.

fred, imo, is mostly for tweens and the occasional slightly bizarre strain of hipster that wants to be "tween-hip"

"Crafty with ffwd on lala" means that you hit forward or rewind to the next track on the album JUST BEFORE the song ends. You see, Lala only registers you as having heard a song when it finishes and once you've finished a song it will only play a 30 second sample from that point on. If you're fast on your feet, you can relisten to a track dozens of times. I also recommend listening to singles as single eps independent of the album. Always hit stop when you're done listening!

I'm only just getting more interested in enka. (Also I suddenly have hundreds of hours of listening I want to get to, or so it seems. The first half of the year I've mostly been listening to a few things obsessively and not finding many leads for new-to-me stuff (though most of my obsessive listening has been to a few new things). It generally hits at some point during the year. But I will add this to my imaginary list.)

I sent some Jero videos to someone from Palau I worked with for a little while. She was impressed with his voice and showed them to her uncle who is an enka fan, and he was very impressed. (Apparently enka and other older Japanese music forms are popular with some segments of Palau, probably partly thanks to Japan's former colonial presence there. She said her grandparents were really into older Japanese music.)
