Seriously, what a fabulous record. The section from 0:20 onwards is just euphoric. I'm playing it over and over in the dark in the depths of winter, with a beautiful warm feeling and a big summery grin on my face.

maybe i should go back to the air france ep but i was really hyped about hearing it at the time, and just didn't feel it in the slightest :(

That song would be better without the vocal bit, which is kinda bland and the tune doesn't really need it.

But quite nice otherwise.

The mood here (especially video, but also the music) reminds me a bit of 'Star Guitar' by the Chemical Brothers. The Chemicals' video is something else, but 'No Excuses' is by far the better tune

This is my problem with 90% of the pop-qua-pop out right now. They all seem to crib house beats, but don't throw in any of the syncopated elements present in most house, so the songs just thod-plunk-thod-plunk along in a really blocky, boring way.

Listening to "Low" right now - not bad but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to hear it again despite some good moments ("like a pornography POSter") - I hate to invoke this trope but it's kind of a "heard all these tricks before" listen for me.

also listened to "poison dart" before that and apparently already forgot about it by the time I wrote the post. Which sounds like a slam but it's just the honest report. Didn't make a huge impression on me - I haven't read any of the Bug related threads, not sure what I was expecting...people love that album, what's the bullet-point argument for this person/group?

xp: Naw, that's basically what it is. It's basically one of those songs that takes a few disparate things happening in its genre ("This Is Why I'm Hot" bleeps, post-crunk beats, T-Pain Hooks) and fuses them together, so the "all these tricks before" feeling is justified. Thing is, when done right, that sort of thing can be totally sui generis (cf: "Lollipop", which pulled a neat trick of pinching the double-time "This Is Why I'm Hot" beeps from "Low", but slowing the beat back down to the original half-tempo), but in this case is just kind of hackish.

i can't stand the katy perry, if only because it acts like it is a smarter piece of pop music, and yet she has to do this ridiculous breakdown to inform us she is singing about someone who's bi-polar. like, wow, really? the song would be perfectly fine without that, it's just like she feels she is singing for retards who wouldn't get it (hot OR cold? how could he be two? that's mental katy!).

"Bongo Jam" is my only track pick to surface thus far, although "Entropy Reigns..." came close.

Yes, Calista comes in later. She was a contestant on Big Brother's Celebrity Hijack on E4 in early 08, and a snatch of "Bongo Jam" was featured on her introductory VT.

'Kids' is a strange one. I hate the intro melody when it's on its own (it's fine as part of the chorus and/or smothered in syths), the beat is the dullest thing ever and the two solos are just awful - but the whole has really grown on me. I'm a sucker for that kind of nostalgia I guess, especially with a nice understated melody

The beat definitely doesn't sound by-the-numbers to me. I think it's quite odd, starting with the way the kick drums throw the whole thing off-kilter. I mean, I know, "OMG syncopation, big deal", but I think Danja is doing something really fun here.

Again, hearing it not on YouTube helps immensely, I think, and completely agree with Lou about the Wayne-less version being much better.

uh, the linearity of it is really cool. agree it would be nice to hear a version without lil wayne. i think the last guest rapper spot i really liked was jay-z in "umbrella" and it had more to do with his delivery than what he was actually saying.

Yeah, basically. "Me & U" was awesome because Cassie & R-Les pushed the icy, vacant robot aspect as far as it could go (the amazing production didn't hurt), but everything she's done since has been kind of nonexistant.

I don't know, I think Cassie does this sort of wistful sweetness thing ("Not With You," "Official Girl," "Kiss Me,") just as well as she does the detached ice-queen.

hey re: official girl, the wayneless version is indeed far superior, and yeah the youtube is super poorly mixed-sounding and makes it sound way too cluttered. besides the great hook what i like about the song is how clean it all sounds; the production makes it super spacious and for me enhances the sentiment the song's trying to get across...it strikes me as really innocent and sincere and good-willed.

Thanks. It did occur to me that the vocal arrangement might be a way of covering up the weak singing that I'm always hearing about. It's great anyway, I can't think of another track that does so many different things with its vocals

I've just never bothered to seek any out and it's not exactly ubiquitous in day-to-day life.

Apart from Me & U, Cassie's appeal for me at least is how she seems situated in the Venn intersection between fembot and teen-movie character. It reminds me of something Tim F said about Person Pitch on another thread, its less of a lack of depth, more a glistening variety of surfaces. Its an aesthetic that's all about surface and their impenetrability. Its a seductive mirage of a song, better without Wayne because its more compact, wonderfully free of spontaneity (replaced instead with the thrill of how everything just clicks together so satisfyingly). I'll admit I'm a sucker for really minimal pop music and so this is out the door, round the corner for me.

The Koze version is good in a sort of fake Alan Braxe & Fred Falke way but the original has all that awesome percussion and swanee whistle noises and so forth, it's so much more kinetic.

i think "inoffensive" is the problem, tbh. i'm still really young and this past year my tastes shifted significantly, and i think i'm going to look back on it and be really glad it happened. this band represents the bland indie rock that i've grown to loathe, especially when they're grouped with other, infinitely more talented artists in their 'genre', which gives those guys a bad name by comparison to non-indie bros. it's like, how am i supposed to convince people that of montreal are worth listening to when their ambition and talent is subverted and rejected in favor of this stuff in the media.
also, i tried listening to the album again about a month ago and it gave me this uncomfortable feeling, i have no idea what it was or why but i didnt like it and had to stop.

As for the Ting Tings, I guess I say it all in the blip up there... I can see why it wouldn't be some people's thing but it seems weirdly self-evident to me why it would be some other people's. I mean it is just stupidly rich with hooks: the main guitar thing, the "ame, ame, ame" bit, the way she pops back out to declare "They call me HELL," plus obviously "STAY-CEEEE" which is great. And yeah, the forest of stuff in the last minute. This is turning into Tom Ewing's review of "Sugar Sugar" sort of, but it's one of those kind of songs, two and a half minutes about nothing at all that just keeps layering it on higher and higher. I would put "Stand and Deliver" in this lineage as well. The Ting Tings are no Ants but it's a great single.

idk kev, fleet foxes to me operate as "indie rock" only in the way that the term has shifted in this decade. they certainly aren't indie rock like deerhunter is indie rock or jay reatard is indie rock or even mgmt is indie rock. the album leaves me a little bit cold - but oftentimes so does much acoustic folk - but i certainly wouldn't call them bland. they are musically sparse and their ideas are immediately graspable. just because skeletal lamping has crazy musical shifts and lyrics about being a tranny doesn't make it any more or less "bland" - it's just an aesthetic choice. if anything i think their reliance on open spaces and vocal harmonies makes them quite interesting - and their music, in this day, almost daring - even if i think the songs sometimes fall flat.

i'm not sure i directly disagree with anything you just said, jordan, but i think my main problem with them is that they are so aesthetically driven rather than song-driven. that's the thing that pisses me off, actually, for me they're all style no substance. it's the same feeling i get for some "lol we're lo-fi!" band that cops the cool aesthetic technique of the moment but forgets to write songs. i can totally see why some people might like them, and the dudes have fine voices for sure, but it's just not something i'm able to engage with at all.

i just saw the Fascination video. hated it (and them) for the first 30 seconds but was completely won over by the end! the band's puppy-dog sincerity would make them very punchable if the music didn't follow-through with its complete lack of irony - pretty rare for such an obvious 80s throwback. the groove is undeniable and the build-up during the 'say the word' bit is absolutely glorious. great song!

The Fleet Foxes song reminds me most of the sixties revival bands that occasionally come out of Liverpool. It's a bit better than straight Merseybeat, I can hear that the folk, Appalachian, gospel or whatever influences are there, and there are some nice moments - but it's been done before, doesn't amount to more than the sum of its parts, and so is too close to pastiche to be worth my time (xp obviously)

Fascination: agree with what Tim and jabba hands say. I really, really don't like those first thirty seconds - not one for simplified upbeat hooks, me - and I wish there was a bit more going on there. But it develops really nicely after that when it gets a bit more complicated. I was going to say that both 'Boyfriend' and '10,000 Nights' are far better, but on second thoughts that's probably just because they have much stronger starts. Good band.

Gang Gang Dance I like. I really like the drums in the first half - lots of nice triplets and the percussion track interacts with the other strange elements really well. It brings to mind the Cassie track a little bit for that reason, the busyness of it. I'm most enjoying the laid-back dance tunes here. Not my usual sort of thing, so this poll is great news for me

It's only just struck me, but has anyone ever noticed the similarity between 'White Winter Hymnal' and certain passages of the Habanera from Carmen? (Check out this from about 1.23-ish in)

It remains headsticky and sharp, a great example of milking a ton of energy out of a limited premise and very few lyrics. The drummer deserves bonus credit here, although clearly the center of this thing is Ms. Maria, whose Nico von Bjork style is a kind of guaranteed win. Good song.

Rev - Huh - I think it's pretty punchy but I guess I sorta see what you mean. I could maybe live with the piano being a little louder, and the drums sometimes. But lots of things jump out of the speakers to me, mainly in the vocals! "WOAH OH WUH UH OH!"

And goddamn, the way the chorus roars back in after the whole "the word is on your lips" section - that right there is all I really ask of music from the Beatles to ABBA to this here. Flutters my heart, it does.

The problem with that Ida Maria song is there's so little to it and her shtick is so limited that it goes from Oh My God (this is great!) to Oh My God (STFU) within about three minutes.

"Fascination" feels like one of those songs which at first sound great, but pretty soon you forget about them. A lot of instant, ear-grabbing hooks, but it kinda lacks the sort of melodic and sonic sensibilities that make an evergreen pop song. A fun piece of fluff nevertheless.

No worries! I couldn't name contemporary references to this myself. It's just that I'm heavily into Nico and can't find a single trace Nico might have left in this song. But I could be entirely deaf to it, I must admit.

The deep, husky parts on some (not all) of the verses - some of the repetitions of "pin a smile," "for-tress" etc. I'm not good enough at describing voices (nor a fan enough of Nico!) to really do this justice, though.

Listening to "Kids" now, heard it before but this is the first time I'm paying attention. It's good but maybe playing its cards a little too forcefully in the case of that main keyboard hook. Everything else is really beautifully put-together, though - especially that wonderful, wonderful Super Nintendo solo in the middle there. I much prefer the sound of "Time To Pretend" (which I assume we'll be getting to in due time) but this sort of Faint-esque digression seems like a reasonable thing for this band to do and they equip themselves well. Love the rampaging "Blue Monday" drums that come crashing back in later on. This is pretty okay!

I wasn't too convinced by "Fascination" before, but damn, I wish I had bought the album when it was a fiver.

But I like the way it comes together as a soundscape, a little 4-minute Blade Runner, the "city of wonder" inhabited by this incredibly machined voice...and yet the prechorus sounds an uplifting note, humanity still alive in the darkness. The suggested narrative is way better than the complete set of actual real-life lyrics.

Air France are the acceptable side of twee for me, the romantic sense of wide-eyed wonder rather than sickening mimsiness.

Moreover this is where I can't finally get on board with the anti-indie crusade - it tries to hypostasize different ennervating configurations into a single monolithic quality of wrongness, which is something i think just doesn't exist in music (unless we're talking about, say, "holocaust denying" as a quality of music).

My longstanding issues with indie are much more comparable to the way I felt about dubstep two years ago: the sense that this music is/was so often being obtuse in failing to live up to its own rhetoric and/or potential. I've been pleasantly surprised to find dubstep starting to reform itself, and while indie is too big/amorphous to undergo "reform" as such, there's similar situations where pockets of music we might call "indie" draw their indie qualities into configurations that escape or (better yet) respond to the very frustrations I normally have.

Gang Gang Dance are precisely such an example; it would be dishonest to give them some kind of free pass by saying "oh no they're not really indie." Better and more interesting to ask how/why they redeem indie as an operating context.

And with both it strikes me as childlike-ness that is possible only after passing through regret/melancholy/disillusionment

Air France's music isn't at all trying to do that "Fascination"-style dogmatic insistence on innocence/positivity: it's music that explicitly toys with the fragility of loveliness - e.g. the double implication of a sample like "...like a dream/no, better." This is why they remind me so much of Saint Etienne, especially the tear-flecked "euphoria" of "He's On The Phone". Which makes me think of Kylie's "Better The Devil You Know", which I think my friend Catherine described as being about the hysterical joy of staring into an abyss (which is melodramatic but spot-on in many ways).

yeah, although i think the misleading term here is probably 'childlike.' we're really talking about wonder, period. and i guess that's where people (like, maybe, air france, and definitely, say, flaming lips) go wrong for me in sort of stipulating innocence or at least naivete as a precondition for wonder. or, more precisely, fetishizing the particular variety of wonder that arises from imagined innocence or naivete. as a grown-up, i can still experience wonder, including in music, through avenues that don't require any nostalgia at all. ornette coleman comes to mind (who arguably also fetishizes a kind of innocence, but it's of a more rigorous sort).

Geogaddi is the best example I can think of of ambient electronic music that mixes childlike wonderment with anxiety, confusion and fear. That said, I'm not sure I want Air France to become more sinister.

Oddly for an American Idol winner, on her own material Jordin usually performs most strongly when she realises that her baby-Mariah voice actually works best prosecuting baby-Janet material (see for example current single “One Step At A Time”): fluttery and almost ostentatiously pretty, with Jordin’s voice never resting on a single note for more than a moment – with Janet this is done to obscure her vocal limitations, with Jordin it’s a choice.

“No Air” is a bit risky therefore, with Jordin lingering lugubriously over heartbroken notes and phrases like she’s been shot in the chest. But death-fixated pop songs are the exception to every rule, and this suicide note is simply gorgeous, a deep pool of intoxicating emotion perfect for every wallower. Chris Brown also does fantastic, understated work, his gentle, yearning delivery providing a trace paper outline of a hidden mountain of regret.

If the song is devastated, the arrangement is utopian, all twinkling starlight tinkles and the most graceful stuttering kickdrum. The chorus, when the two get wrapped up in suffocating clouds of cumulus synthesiser is probably the largest moment in pop this year, like two giant space babies finding each other in a Hollywood remake of 2001: A Space Odyssey redone as a romance. And we haven’t gotten to the fabulous artificial strings in the last two minutes, then that absolutely desolate, almost discordant harmonised moan, and then the stadium drums come in, and, oh… words fail, truly they do.

Estelle's vocals are really shrill, and the lyrics are really stupid when not completely cringeworthy. The melody is catchy, but not pleasing, and so just sits in your head being annoying forever after you hear it. Kanye is as cloying and smug as he's ever been. The way the beat is arranged discards any sense of flow it had in "Impatient". Basically, this song is garbage. I hate it more than Katy Perry.

Considering that she has possibly the LEAST SHRILL VOICE of any female singer who had a popular hit in 2008, this basically tells me you either a) can't handle hearing notes over a certain pitch; b) really suck at detecting/describing timbre; or c) are having such a visceral reaction to other elements in the song that you dislike that you've completely forgotten what Estelle actually sounds like.

Yay M83! I neglected to nominate any tracks, myself, and when I went to vote found myself without very much on the list that I could get behind, thus my tracks ballot had only: four M83 songs, "Hot N Cold" and one forlorn Jesu "alternate version". The UK-specific references play as exotification in a way they wouldn't in something like "1980". Once again, I realize this is as much Kanye's fault as Estelle's.

I wouldn't say in all instances, but more often than not and more often in singers who are not naturally nasal than those who are. I also wouldn't think of the Beach Boys as nasal really. My objection to them is more "cherubic glee club vocals".

About 'Love Lockdown' though, what is it that I'm picking up to make me think of Indian music? Is it just the drum pattern, or is it the bass sounding like a tabla, or is it something else entirely?

I didn't think much of 'Ready for the Floor' when I first heard it - much as I'd like to like Hot Chip, there's often a kind of archness about them that I find quite offputting, this seeming like a prime example. But now I find it quite sweet and sincere. Maybe it's just the lack of effects on the vocals. I really like the video too

The problem with Hot Chip is that for archness to work you have to actually be clever.

I'm amazed people like this enough for it to place so high (on this and other year-end polls). I can't get through the first minute.

Back to Erykah Badu (no.24 or thereabouts) - this was the last thing I had on last night, just once, and it sounded amazing. Today I can't see what the fuss was about. Actually, that's not fair, it's very haunting and I do like it, but it could virtually be a Kate Bush tune (I'm thinking something off The Dreaming, maybe 'Leave it Open'). No bad thing, but I find it strange that it should be so exalted

yeah I love Erykah/New Amerykah/"The Healer" but I never did get why everyone is SO crazy for that particular song (it won the 'best song on new amerykah' poll by a large margin) as opposed to, say, "Soldier" or "That Hump"...

"ready for the floor" is a really sweet song - "you're my number one guy/ number one guy/ number number one one one one guuuyyyyy"

There was a time in very early 2008 when Ready For The Floor felt like a genuine pop moment, in the the UK at least. It went top three over here, there were stories that Kylie tried to get it for her album. Those moments when an oddball band suddenly go from indie/hipster concern to actual High Street disco-friendly pop are still comparatively rare. I still wish it had actually gone to Number One because the last minute or so would have been perfect at the end of chart rundown shows.

Of course, then other ILM hobbyhorses like Wiley and Dizzee Rascal and MIA all had massive hits, and it stopped looking like such a novelty. I still love the song though, and its clunkiness works in its favour like a lot of the best Hot Chip songs. When they don't work, however, they can be awful, but the feeling that they're stumbling across great pop as much by accident as design, that the wheels could just come off at any point, comedy clown car style, is part of their appeal.

"electric feel" = awesome. I don't really get their other songs but thats a great one.
