So I loaned this guy at work the Hercules & Love Affair album...

... and he loves it, especially the singles, but also says it's too straightforward.

So now he's asked me to bring him the "weirdest electronic music" that I can think of.

Not inaccessible, dense, obtuse, obscure or difficult. Just weird and electronic.

I can think of a few things myself, but I thought I'd pose the question here as well.

What can the ILM hivemind recommend?

Bruce Haack obvv

uh oh I'm having a fantasy, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:00 (seventeen years ago)

Perrey & Kingsley
Jean-Jacques Perrey
Gershon Kingsley

in that order

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

How about Autechre Confield, definitely fits both weird and electronic.

Mark Rich@rdson, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

"We Share Our Mother's Health"

ablaeser, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

xpost but it might be inaccessible, dense, obtuse, obscure or difficult.

wilter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

I guess I was thinking Stephen meant not necessarily those things; in that case, how about Matmos The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast.

Mark Rich@rdson, Thursday, 31 July 2008 00:51 (seventeen years ago)

Matmos, Autechre both good suggestions. The Knife too. That Rough Trade comp has some great stuff on it too, nice selection of tracks. Not familiar with the rest but I'm taking note regardless. Thanks!

Now... what else?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:53 (seventeen years ago)

also definitely the *weirdest* of this brand of stuff i've ever heard

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

I'm guessing this character is new to electronic music so I'd say mid-late 90's early 00's Warp, i.e. Squarepusher, Aphex, Autechre, et al are generally a safe way to go. Accessible, enjoyable, and generally satisfy people looking for 'wierd' electronic music. At least for a 16 year old me, getting off on the idea of 'wierd electronic' music, this was my touchstone.

mehlt, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:57 (seventeen years ago)

And I forgot Oval!

Endless Summer would be another good album to play.

mehlt, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i was gonna say Richard D. James Album just might do the trick if dude wants odd and accessible

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

Rather than predictable contrived IDM weirdness, how about something like DJ Koze? Or Villalobos? Matthew Herbert?

Jacobw, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:04 (seventeen years ago)

Because predictable contrived IDM weirdness might sound unpredictable and uncontrived to fresh ears?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

Endless Summer would be another good album to play.

yeah i was gonna say Richard D. James Album just might do the trick if dude wants odd and accessible

I had pulled both of these out already before you guys suggested em. But definitely good choices.

stephen, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)

That's right (Xpost). I don't think he wants to listen to this music so that after he can go talk about it on ILM.

mehlt, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think he wants to listen to this music so that after he can go talk bitch about it on ILM.

stephen, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

Give him:

some Merzbow
the new Dan Friel album
\some Aphex Twin, but skip Richard D. James album and give him Hangable Auto Bulb instead for sure.
also give him Mu's Afro Finger and Gel

Stevie D, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe give him some of the accessible stuff plus a CD-R of that Pimmon album I linked to with the preface that "this is the stuff you might say isn't even music"

alright so i set this guy up with Autechre's Confield this morning and now he's like, "wtf this is out there, i wanted something like Hot Chip's 'Over and Over,' that's weird to me"

so i think i'm gonna give him Computer World or maybe Silent Shout next. i dunno.

stephen, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

An interesting exercise in different conceptions of "weird", then!

Hot Chip sound completely normal, like Kylie without er Kylie.

How about Max Tundra?

How about Max Tundra?

good call! i actually thought about bringing Mastered by Guy at the Exchange but didn't, i'll keep that in mind though.

Dan Deacon?

okay, let's add a qualifier: i think he's asking for good, weird and electronic. one of these does not fit Dan Deacon; i'll let you be the judge.

stephen, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

btw i just gave him Silent Shout, will update you guys soon on what he thinks.

Me (10:11:43 AM): thoughts on the cd?
Him (10:11:48 AM): pretty awesome
Me (10:12:20 AM): what do you like about it?
Him (10:12:53 AM): i don't know what you call it. but i like the instrument / sounds that make the melody
Him (10:13:01 AM): like they play a role that a guitar might do
Him (10:13:15 AM): but it's all like electronic sounding

I thought that was implicit in my post!

And yeah Dan Deacon doesn't resemble anything close to good.

Cristian Vogel (and super colider, maybe) would be good too.

Super_Collider is a nice suggestion, thanks

Me (1:51:30 PM): yay
Him (1:51:55 PM): this would be stuff i would really like to listen to while falling asleep
Him (1:52:14 PM): something big is a great song

Actually I think that's a somewhat perceptive/interesting way of talking about all the arpeggio on Silent Shout songs.

Happy Days commentary:

Him (2:54:42 PM): the CD ended
Me (2:54:51 PM): how was it?
Him (2:55:13 PM): dude i really enjoyed it
Him (2:55:18 PM): i could listen to that more
Him (2:55:31 PM): my favorite part by far sounds like a jet engine idling
Him (2:55:41 PM): like how it sounds when you hear a plane
Me (2:55:55 PM): so you liked the 30-40 minute drone section?
Him (2:56:13 PM): yeah i think the repetition is calming
Him (2:56:33 PM): it's like an eloquent version of white noise
Him (2:56:41 PM): mostly blank

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 1 August 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

Reminds me of one time where I played Main (firmament 3, nonetheless, which is among their more abstract stuff) to who was probably the owner of what is the worst taste in music I've ever met (not so much badtaste as much as just incredibly unaware and ignorant, so, nothing but absolute bottom of the barrel mainstream rock and pop, general pleb-dance music, "I don't like any rap - mutters something I can't entirely make out but I'm pretty sure I heard something about 'blacks' - except for Linkin Park, etc.) Either way, she actually liked it. "It's very smooth, it sounds like water. Very relaxing."

mehlt, Friday, 1 August 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

There should be a " after Linking Park. I don't know if it's evident or not but that was quote of her.

Also, while initially describing it, she asked me if it was like "Du Hast Mech."

mehlt, Friday, 1 August 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

Another coworker's analysis of Jim O'Rourke, after she heard Eureka all the way through:

Her (2:13:18 PM): i love him, hilarious

Her (2:20:26 PM): he smokes pall malls
Her (2:20:28 PM): i can tell

Comments from a coworker after hearing "Otis" by the Durutti Column:

(11:47:34 AM): def some electronica
(11:47:37 AM): stuff going on
(11:49:27 AM): its kind of pretty
(11:49:57 AM): it's also kind of irritating to me bc of the high pitched guitar synthesized noise
(11:51:46 AM): well mainly i was trying to see the high points
(11:52:05 AM): bc it's interesting
(11:52:08 AM): but ....
(11:52:17 AM): maybe i'll have to listen a few more times
(11:52:21 AM): to like it

... and then "Sketch for Summer," also by the Durutti Column:

(11:55:02 AM): see what i mean though with all this synthesized stuff, it sounds JUST LIKE the background music to my ducktails nintendo game
(11:55:03 AM): i swear
(11:59:01 AM): it sounds electronic?
(11:59:05 AM): and whiney
(11:59:14 AM): dont really know how to musically describe that
(12:00:43 PM): power of articulation is low
(12:00:45 PM): haha
(12:00:52 PM): but i know what im talking about

stephen, Monday, 11 August 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

I wouldn't go the spazzy IDM route. That stuff hasn't aged well, and it's more "weird" than weird anyway.

The O'Rourke was a good one. What about...

William Basinski: Shortwave Music
Yellow Magic Orchestra: Solid State Survivor
Vladislav Delay: Multila
Suicide: s/t
Thomas Brinkmann: Klick
Alvin Lucier: I am Sitting in a Room
Holger Czukay: Canaxis

Four Tet;
Borderline inaccessible and sometimes dense. But definitely electronic and surely to many...weird

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno Otis is pretty damn accessible. And no human should ever live without hearing at least one disintegration loop. But first maybe try the track Modena by Keith Fullerton Whitman, an all time top 50 fav. pieces of music ever for me. Unbelievably relaxing and supremely beautiful. captures a lot of the aesthetic and experimental qualities of someone like, say, terry riley, but just amazing to listen to while idly staring out of the window of a bus of what have you.

mehlt, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)
