This reads like a luriqua thread.

I was kinda disappointed when it wasn't!

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:21 (sixteen years ago) link

at first I was like "LOLOLOLZ" but this actually pretty hot

The Brainwasher, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:22 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah this song kind of kicks ass

deej, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:22 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i'm totally down with this song even though i like it mostly because of the sample

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 February 2008 03:23 (sixteen years ago) link

lololol @ Дyo

The Reverend, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I've always hated the original mostly because of that annoying synth riff and it really isn't that much better with someone rapping on it.

The Reverend, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:24 (sixteen years ago) link

thats the thing tho j0rdan, the sample should make it suck

deej, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:24 (sixteen years ago) link

this is good bcuz of sample-concept-rapper synergy

deej, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:25 (sixteen years ago) link

or because its just fun as fuck

deej, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:26 (sixteen years ago) link

the video is something great tho

The Reverend, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:26 (sixteen years ago) link

After every 8 bars I keep expecting the heavy drumbeat to come, but, alas, it never does. This song just makes me want to hear "Better Off Alone."

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:26 (sixteen years ago) link

fake

deej, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:26 (sixteen years ago) link

see i'd find this totally listenable just because of the sample, but credit to khalifa for holding his own on the verses though

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 February 2008 03:27 (sixteen years ago) link

a friend of mine from pittsburgh was trynna get me to pay attention to this dude like a year and a half ago and i was all 'lol pittsburgh rap'

deej, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:28 (sixteen years ago) link

i mean the rapping is nothing special but he rides the beat well-- esp that part in the first verse where they stutter the drums real quick as he goes "drop it down the poll and grind slow" or w/e

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 February 2008 03:29 (sixteen years ago) link

yah this is pretty high on my "good 08 shit" playlist, though it admittedly doesn't have much competition right now

what's the sample on that?

The Reverend, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:35 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i think 'pretty rave girl' is also fire

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 February 2008 03:35 (sixteen years ago) link

slight improvement over the original but unfortunately does not take it above the mediocrity line. if it were me I would have repitched the adj riff down

"a friend of mine from pittsburgh was trynna get me to pay attention to this dude like a year and a half ago and i was all 'lol pittsburgh rap'

-- deej"

he is probably one of the best pittsburgh emcee's ive heard, though he is only as good as the beats he is on. at my record shop (in pittsburgh, obviously) we sold many copies of both his mixtape and his demo, which is wild since we almost never move copies of local shit because it mostly sucks.

this song in particular is very poopy, ive heard him do it live opening for Nas once and TI once, both times it made me want to throw up in my mouth. that said, the cat who does alot of his studio shit played me a track he did rapping on a 9th Wonder beat, that shit was very hot. and of course the joint he did on Nicolay's album is pretty nice. he needs to hook up with some of pgh's better beatsmiths, he could be ridiculous.

for some actually really dope pittsburgh hip-hop (though he is originally from strong island) check armstead brown:

http://www.myspace.com/peacepipeproductions

his "Fieldwork" album is actually very very good, one of the best real hiphop records i have heard in years.

"pipecock nothing on that myspace is anywhere near as good as 'say yeah'

it all depends on what youre looking for. if you want good hiphop, armstead brown is your man. if you want some nonsense, then that wiz joint is right up your alley. that shit is barely even listenable, what a fucking joke of a song. it makes me mad because the guy could obviously do some much better shit.

i can't actually think of a jazz record that is embarassing enough to make a direct comparison, but imagine Charlie Hunter covering "YMCA" and i think you could almost get there.

Please do not use this as an excuse to write more articles about the synergy of your days taking Ecstasy in the 80s and modern rap music.

Thanks,

When "Sexyback" and T.I.'s "Why You Wanna" came out, I remember saying to a friend, "funny, it sounds like rap and r'n'b producers are drawing influences from 90's trance and house now..." So now it's become a full-on phenomenon?

spose i can at least extend the courtesy of chalking it up to the crosscultural fetish whatever thing i put forward on the 'way i are' thread ages ago, since everything post-'drifter' like ballgreezy, grindmode and that young dro i do love wildly and unreservedly and wish other ppl did too but oh well nm

ok can we get some sort of ~round-up~ of all the hip-hop trax that jacked some random eurocheese hit going! or that fit vaguely into this hit-and-miss mini-trend.

wiz khalifa - say yeah
hood headlinaz - rollin'
t.i. ft. rihanna - live your life
three 6 mafia ft. pimp c & project pat - i got
gorilla zoe ft. sean kingston - on the corner
princess - pretty rave girl [or did this just sound like it did? i don't recognise the source material at all]

lex pretend, Sunday, 28 December 2008 10:11 (fifteen years ago) link

What does "Rollin'" sample?

The Reverend, Sunday, 28 December 2008 10:34 (fifteen years ago) link

robert miles - children

i LOVED that shit when i was 12

lex pretend, Sunday, 28 December 2008 10:38 (fifteen years ago) link

ha, i loved miles' 'one & one' as well

lex pretend, Sunday, 28 December 2008 10:39 (fifteen years ago) link
