what are these:
9. Sara Bareilles, "Love Song" (LW No. 16, 8 weeks) 6. Finger Eleven, "Paralyzer" (LW No. 7, 29 weeks)
Also, WOW @ "Crank Dat"'s legs. 24 weeks!

t-pain's 3 newest BIG songs (talking about "low" "kiss kiss" and "cyclone") have thrown me for a loop bcuz i really liked all of his big 2007 singles/features (and album) basically immediately and waited for that to wear off (in some cases it did) whereas w/ these three songs i basically hated all 3 of them at the jump and have grown to like/love them (except maybe "cyclone") over the months.

good shit (aka shit i wouldn't mind being beat over the head w/ by radio over the next few months) bubbling/rising in the lower top 40:
new kanye single "flashing lights" new rihanna single "don't stop the music" new snoop "sensual seduction" and paramore still rising (still!) again (!) with the y awesome "misery business"

"Love Song" = VH1-ready girly piano pop, possibly my favorite song along those lines since, I dunno, the first Vanessa Carlton single, getting a boost from appearing in a Rhapsody commercial (although hipster rap novelty act Cool Kids don't seem to be getting much of a chart boost from the same ad).
"Paralyzer" = vaguely funky single from a Canadian band that isn't Nickelback, ubiquitous on rock stations since last March or April and has since become the rare non-ballad rock crossover to pop radio.

I don't like "Love Song" as much as I liked "Breathe" by Anna Nalick or a number of Tashbed songs, but I do like the song.
I'm kinda surprised "Apologize" hasn't pushed up to #1 at any point. There are several songs from #11 to #20 that I don't know at all. Which of those are any good? I've gotten behind.

― The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:33 (sixteen years ago) link
From last year's thread:
"Pop" sounds way more bland and chickenshit and compromised than "teenpop" to me; it's too all-encompassing (plus just wait until it gets overrun by Big Star and Blue Ash and Badfinger fans.) (Not that they should be shut out or anything. Sometimes I'm even one of those myself.)
And my problem with "U.S. charts" is, uh, what about teenpop that doesn't make the U.S. charts (like, say Skye Sweetnam and Hope Partlow and the Veronicas and Pretty Donkey and fill-in-the-Europop-star-I-never-heard-of in the past few years)? Where does that go?
I suggest: Rolling Bubblegum Thread '08. (But it's too late now, maybe.)

sheryl crow should be for another thread as much as vampire weekend
― J0rdan S., Monday, 31 December 2007 22:41 (sixteen years ago) link
But why? See, a rolling thread where people start out talking about what to leave off totally defeats the purpose. (That happened with the Rolling Punk-As-Long-As-You-Define-Punk-They-Way-We-Do thread last year, which seemed dead before it even got started.) Vampire Weekend and Sheryl Crow have fit in fine on the teenpop thread before, I thought (and the Vampire Weekend album isn't horrible, btw.)
― xhuxk, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:52 (sixteen years ago) link
But if you don't have any parameters what is the point of a Rolling Thread?
― The Brainwasher, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:55 (sixteen years ago) link
it's true that there's a lot of major label pop that never actually charts on the Hot 100 or really any other Billboard chart. I don't think anyone will call foul if that stuff gets brought up in a "rolling US charts" thread, though.
― Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:56 (sixteen years ago) link
idk then, ppl can talk about whatever they want. i'm sure this thread's identity will be self-evident by feb or so. i'd prefer more talk about music than chart position, i just put chart position in the thread title bcuz we talked about pop on the 07 charts thread.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 31 December 2007 22:56 (sixteen years ago) link
i brought up panda bear and vampire weekend bcuz they could be rightfully classified as pop, but for this thread i was thinking more towards, major-label pop/rock/rap that charts in the hot 100 or may chart in the top 100. a too broad rolling thread would just be the same as ILM w/ posts acting as new threads.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 31 December 2007 22:59 (sixteen years ago) link
xp Rolling Threads figure out their "point" by the discussion building momentum, not by shutting themselves off to discussion from the gitgo; the best ones (Rolling Teenpop '06, Rolling Country '07) have never bothered to set parameters, and it made the discussion on them more interesting; people can figure out parameters (and ignore them at will, when it makes sense to do so) as they go.

― xhuxk, Monday, 31 December 2007 23:07 (sixteen years ago) link
I don't think saying "we're going to limit this to music that could potentially appear on the billboard top 100" classifies as "shutting the thread off to discussion". It is a fairly vaired and wide-range category, there are threads about Vampire Weekend all over...
― The Brainwasher, Monday, 31 December 2007 23:10 (sixteen years ago) link
that sean kingston song is good.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 31 December 2007 23:10 (sixteen years ago) link
xp Why do people think Vampire Weekend couldn't potentially appear on the Billboard Hot 100? (All they'd need these days is an iTunes ad. And I assume you mean the single; I'll be surprised if the album doesn't enter in the top half of the Billboard 200. Release date is Jan 29, right? So it's up against Simple Plan and Willie Nelson, I guess, and what else? Cheb I Sabbah?? I'm probably missing some important releases there, but it could easily top the Heatseekers chart, if nothing else.)

I think ILM would be well served to have a rolling pop thread without the words "US" or "charts" in it...the US charts seems to suffer from a sad lack of proper pop these days anyhow.
― musically, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 07:39 (sixteen years ago) link
Can I say how much I hate the phrase "proper pop"? Not saying you are, but a lot of people tend to use it as a convenient stand-in for "white". And I don't think anyone was trying to restrict this to "proper pop", anyway.

Thought that "Spring Street" on the recent Vanessa Carlton album was the best thing she ever did. Trying to do the mother-daughter continuity thing (a now-I-understand-you-mom song); her lyrics find a way to the obvious, but she's got this beautiful not-quite-a-kid anymore hum in her voice.
Yeah, it baffles me that you put "U.S. charts" in what you intended to be a general pop thread. What's the chance of Stephanie McIntosh or Ewa Farna or Kim-Lian ever charting in the U.S., or Dahv or Katy Rose ever charting anywhere, or Marit Larsen or Ashlee Simpson ever charting again? But then, since I chose not to start a thread, I shouldn't get into this. But also, nothing stopped you from waiting for the discussion to go further rather than unilaterally starting a thread.
But anyway, whether this thread gets interesting depends on whether people inspire themselves to actually say something about the music. But if someone starts a rolling everywhere everything bubblegum and popped thread, I'd take a look.
― Frank Kogan, Thursday, 3 January 2008 16:06 (sixteen years ago) link
again, i made this the US charts thread because a. we had good discussion about pop on the us charts thread last year and b. it makes it obvious to people where they can talk about shit like "low" and "paralyzer" and "tattoo" etc. etc.
that said, i could care less what people talk about on here. pop music released in the us? cool? marit larsen? cooler. ppl letting thread titles derail whatever pop they want to talk about are on here are either taking this too seriously or idiotically stubborn.
if you want to talk about dahv or katy rose or whatever, and other ppl also want to talk about them, i see no reason why it can't be discussed here. if people bitch, it's gonna be reactionary anti-teen pop ppl, not anyoen trying to protect the integrity of the "charts" thread.

new mary j. also growing on me. it sounded really thin to me the first few times i've heard it, but the verses are really great. still wish the hook had a little more too it but whatever. i like really overblown mary like "be without you" better than this but i don't mind hearing this in the car at all.
watched jordin sparks do "tattoo" for one of the networks' new years eve thing, and she was really fucking bland. i didn't watch her season of AI, but i can see why she's has yet to reach superstardom. she seemed really bored and it was just blah. still like the song though.

ah ok. i can't stress enough how much it's being played on the radio here in miami. also the new trina single which is pretty bug. the chorus sounds like kind of icy techno and verses talk about intimate details of dating wfb. it's really weird. trina sings the hook though and it's not half bad. not that a good look for her though.

I love the new version of "Calabria" with those hypnotic female dancehall vocals. In Australia this is basically received as house music (which, technically, the track actually is) - there was a rather tiresome bootleg with the vocal from Crystal Waters' house track "Destination Unknown" that remains inescapable on commercial radio.
It reminds me a bit of the dancehall/house fusion that Bob Sinclar's been trying to getoff the ground recently. But I like the idea of it being picked up and misappropriated in the US.
― Tim F, Thursday, 3 January 2008 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah, but it has the reggaeton "dembow" rhythm, so I imagine it's being recieved as reggaeton here. This coincides with the trend in reggaeton toward faster bpms and a more four-to-the-floor feel.

So, it's the second Billboard Hot 100 of 2007. What's happening:
"Low" spends a second week at #1, the rest of the top 4 is unchanged. "Soulja Boy" does rebound to #5, a rebound I'm assuming is gonna be short lived. "Apologize" apparently can't get over the hump and must be happy with a #2 peak. Other than Soulja's leap, not too much going on in the top 10, though Sara Bareilles is not just a one week wonder here. Does she have the staying power of Colbie Caillat or of Feist?
Sean Kingston's "Take You There", Good Charlotte's "I Don't Wanna Be In Love" and Taylor Swift's "Our Song" and "Teardrops on My Guitar" are steady climbers, the latter two being the biggest country crossover hits since "Before He Cheats". "Big Girls Don't Cry" is airplay gainer wtf. "Piece of Me" already falling. "Into the Night" and "Don't Stop the Music" are slowly crawling up. And "See You Again" jumps into the top 50, yay.
― Greg Fanoe, Thursday, 3 January 2008 17:52 (sixteen years ago) link
"Low" is growing on me more and more. Not the best f/ T-Pain hit but possibly the best rapping on any f/ T-Pain hit.
I'm feeling less and less charitable towards the Bedingfield/Kingston song since it's now official that "Babies" won't be on her U.S. album and whatever chance of it ever being a single here is nil.

some things:
-heard 'paralyzer' for the first time today. thought the music was pretty good but the vocals are way too aggro for me with like this big burly dude growling "I WANT TO MAKE YOU MOVE". no thx
- i dunno if they play birdman/wayne's 'poppin bottles' anywhere else (i've heard it like 12 times in the 3-week-long span that i've been home and not coincidentally all 12 times have been on the station where dj khaled works and 10 of the times have been on his show [this is the station that named "i'm so hood" the #1 'hottest' track of 07 mind you]) and they totally bleep out when wayne says "po it on the models/shut up bitch swallow/if you can't swallow/shut up bitch, googles" so it's like 2 seconds of silence and it's really disorienting every time and i can't ever remember a song that had that long of a censor
― J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2008 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link
Down here in central NC they play "Poppin' Bottles" plenty frequently, and this makes me very happy.
― matt2, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 16:03 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah "Pop Bottles" has been on the radio here constantly for weeks, if not months. And they don't even censor that swallow/gargle (lol googles) line except for the b-word. It's great to hear Jadakiss on the radio again, even if only as a 2-bar sample, especially since they leave the bottle popping sound effect from his track in there.
― Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 16:11 (sixteen years ago) link
I think the longest stretch of dead air from censored lines on a recent hit was "Make It Rain," couple lines in a row that's nothing to references to bricks and weed and lean that made for a real garbled radio edit.

― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 January 2008 18:50 (sixteen years ago) link
well i mean obviously the song functions as part of the wfb hit parade more than a birdman song (there are SEVEN songs w/ wayne on his new album), but i actually do like his verses on "pop bottles" too.
― Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 18:54 (sixteen years ago) link
i actually really like wayne's verse the more i hear it. kinda falls in between his serious rapping voice and his dumb-ass hyena howl.
birdman starting out the second verse by basically talking is hilarious.

Chart news Miley Cyrus's "I'll See You Sometime If My Record Company Ever Notices That My Single Is A Hit And Decides To Play It On Their Own Radio Station" looks like it's stalling in the upper 40s. Snoop Dogg's "I Have Decided To Become A Novelty Act" jumps from 39 to 21; everything else is in stasis. (Remember two years ago when the Hot 100 was jumping every which way?) Enur f. Natasja "Calabria 2007" at 60 but not yet taking off the way it seemed it might. (Billboard is now calling it "Calabria 2008.") Would like to know more about Natasja, who was killed in a car crash last June. Was she Denmark's first dancehall star?

I'm posting this link here, even though this is a Japanese song, because I think it would interest some people who post on this thread (and will be lost on the "world music" thread), and it sounds close to stuff going on in US pop rock now (and it is a hit). Maybe there is a better thread? I would have stuck it on the rolling teenpop thread, because it's close enough, but the new title of the new version of it makes me think, nah.
Tokyo Jihen - Senko Shojo
(I have to say, a lot of their songs aren't this poppy. In fact, this one has taken me longer to get into probably because of how pop it is, but I like it, especially in combination with the video.)

My, my it is very nice. Thanks for the heads up. As for chart discussion, Yael Naim's "New Soul" just debuted at number 9 on the Hot 100 based strictly on digital sales from its inclusion in a MacBook Air commercial. It was only played on three Hot 100 stations according to Billboard. Pretty amazing for a pretty run-of-the-mill song. And I know, I know a one week digital sales spike can happen at any time, but this is one of the most indisputable cases of radio play not being at all necessary anymore.
― matt2, Thursday, 7 February 2008 20:46 (sixteen years ago) link
Buckcherry back in the Top 10 with a horrid, horrid song. I enjoy a good comeback but not this one.
Yael Naim is up 9 to 7 this week - surprised me, if no one else.
Impressive that Rihanna's gone to No. 3 with the fourth single off that album. I thought the success of "Don't Stop the Music" might help Michael Jackson's revisited "Wanna Be Startin' Something," but no such.
Flo Max is still at No. 1 and may never ever leave. Unless Mariah, who's in at 78 with "Touch My Body," bullets to the top with a full week of airplay. (Is it a digital single yet?)

Best I can come up with: Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg's "Je T'Aime ... Mon Non Plus" reached #58 in 1970. Claudine Longet had five songs in the Hot 100 between 1966-68, though none reached higher than #30. Edith Piaf's "Milord" hit #88 in 1961.

Wow, I really can't believe that about "Music Sound Better With You." I don't ever recall seeing that anywhere on MTV or even late night radio mix shows (the only place you really heard dance music in NC). I mean I saw the video to "Around the World" many times and would hear it around occasionally, but never "Music Sound Better With You." This reminds me that I had "Around the World" on a Virgin label sampler record store cassette freebie thing. On of my roomie's hated it, but two of us loved it so it saw many rewinds. As a college student, I collected those free in store cassette/cd things like crazy. Okay, I'll stop now.

Janet's Discipline is kicking my ass! There are really only 2 duds as I see it--"Never Letchu Go" and "Greatest X". Otherwise I've been listening to this straight through over and over. Even the skits are hilarious, especially "Good Morning Janet" where she sounds like she's emerging from some sort of embryonic cocoon before some counseling from Keoko. The Missy track is maybe a bit lacking (with Missy insisting that "This is crazy!"), but I think it's growing on me.
Overall I had very low expectations for this so I'm pleasantly surprised. I hope it's received well. I feel like if this had come out before her last two relative duds, it would be welcomed with open arms.

― The Reverend, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 22:57 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah, "Sorry" does nothing for me. "Everything" was about as wussy a song as I'm interested in hearing from Buckcherry, and I didn't even like that one that much. can't believe they're working the 5th single from a 2-year-old album.

― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 February 2008 23:06 (sixteen years ago) link
not really -- PWT have one hit song, which they kept re-releasing over and over (on an album, then an EP, then on another album) until it finally became a smash, where Buckcherry released a bunch of singles off one album and two were very gradual sleeper hits, and they finally took that momentum and knocked it out of the park with a big instant ballad hit.

Leona Lewis, Simon Cowell's pet project over in the UK, is making dents on the charts here already with Bleeding Love. She's going to get the Idol bump (maybe performing on elimination night after the Beatles ep?) so look out for her.

The artist that goes by the name of Flex has appeared from seemingly nowhere to becoming a fixture in the top 10 of the Billboard charts.
A native of Panama, Flex's success here is a continuation of his initial success in Mexico. There, under a different artistic name (which was changed for his U.S. release as it is a derogatory term for African Americans), Flex had been charting high thanks to his single "Te Quiero." Now, Flex is repeating the feat here in the United States, with "Te Quiero," the single, and the The Romantic Style/Te Quiero, the album.

Um, is no one else mindblown that Usher just popped up at number one after seemingly stumbling along with leaks that didn't get much of a reaction? What do folks think about "Love In the Club"? I know The Reverend doesn't think much of it from the R&B thread, but I'm kinda feeling it. Although the Jeezy verse could please disappear and I'd be quite happy. But still 51 --> 1 is a little surprising to me. I thought Usher may have lost his fire after the Luda thing just fizzled, but this is pretty impressive.
― matt2, Thursday, 6 March 2008 14:08 (sixteen years ago) link
"Love Is in the Club" jumped to number one because it was first available on iTunes this week. He is still Usher after all. The real test will be to see how much staying power it has. Personally, I think it's pretty mediocre.

Ah, KUBE. If I really were into hip-hop, I think I'd listen to X104 instead...it's a HS-run station out of Mercer Island with basically the same playlist but minus the on-air "personalities" and commercials. X104 used to be more like KISS, with Top 40 pop and R&B, so it's unfortunate that it changed. The station I would LOVE to listen to is C89.5, which is dance radio, but I cannot get it on decent reception and could only listen to it when I worked in Seattle city limits. Same with 90.9 (top 40, operated out of a college in Tacoma). Obviously I could listen to anything on my computer, but I've always had a wish to find a local radio station I really enjoyed that didn't sound like crap when I use my stereo.
― musically, Sunday, 9 March 2008 02:24 (sixteen years ago) link
I love love love "With You," it's the first midtempo Chris Brown song I've heard that was halfway decent. And yeah I just heard it a couple of days ago.
― musically, Sunday, 9 March 2008 02:27 (sixteen years ago) link
Huh. I get C89.5 just fine out here in Everett, but I've never managed to receive X104 at all. I only even know about it because I ran across the station's website, and I'm convinced it's as mythical as the minotaur. What is nice though, is that I can get the Beat 94.5, which is Vancouver's top 40 station, although truth be told, I've barely listened to them since they switched from the hiphop format they had roughly 2002-2005.
― The Reverend, Sunday, 9 March 2008 08:52 (sixteen years ago) link
I shouldn't say C89 comes in "just fine", per se. It's a bit fuzzy where I'm at, but go about a mile in any direction, and it's crystal clear.

Is Flo Rida a big star? I see him at the top of all these charts, but is it just a momentary thing/a fluke or is he a "Next Big Thing" to watch?
I guess Flo Rida is from my state, Flo-rida.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 9 March 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link
Flo Rida is not a big star at all, no, just one of the (many) rappers who got T-Pain on a hook during his hot streak, and somehow managed to ride it to a bigger hit than Plies or whoever did. He was barely even known in Southern hip hop before "Low," but that song's success I guess makes him an instant next big thing, Timbaland follow-up at all. I like him but I definitely don't see him as a potential A-list star.

u mad, his other midtempo songs ("Yo," "Kiss Kiss") are just about the only ones I can tolerate, "With You" is just lukewarm Stargate leftovers.
― Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 9 March 2008 22:00 (sixteen years ago) link
I know I'm way out of music's pop culture loop, but it seems to me -- and again, I'm just going by glancing at the pop charts once in a while -- that there are fewer and fewer A-list big stars with long careers. Seems like now there's more one-hit or a few-hit wonders then ever before.
But again, I realize that I might be laboring under a complete misperception. Am I?
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 9 March 2008 22:03 (sixteen years ago) link
I think that's part total truth, part misperception (because of course you only remember the A-list stars from the past, if you look at charts from way back then of course you'll see a ton of forgettable people with just that one big song), and part because hits are now very much driven by producers, songwriters and featured artists, which is why you get a big song "by" Flo Rida seemingly out of nowhere that's really just part of T-Pain's hit parade.
― Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 9 March 2008 22:09 (sixteen years ago) link

"Kiss Kiss" isn't midtempo, is it? Basically I meant that "With You" was the only ballad-y CB song I've liked.
Yeah, I can hear it in the car, but not at home.
― musically, Monday, 10 March 2008 02:56 (sixteen years ago) link
well, I'll give you that "With You" is better than his other ballads, but I think "Kiss Kiss" is still midtempo (at least compared to stuff like "Run It" and "Wall To Wall" that beats you over the head with THIS IS A CLUB HIT signifiers).
― Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 March 2008 03:01 (sixteen years ago) link
Is it time for me to point out again that "Right Time" is by far the single best Chris Brown song and is both a ballad and midtempo? Also, "With You" is just fine, but c'mon who doesn't start singing "to the left, to the left" after the first 10 seconds. Stargate really, really have proven to be extraordinarily not diverse in their sound palette.
― matt2, Monday, 10 March 2008 18:57 (sixteen years ago) link
If by "Right Time" you mean "Say Goodbye," that shit is as much a smudged xerox of Usher's "Burn" as "Burn" was a smudged xerox of his own "U Got It Bad." Even the bridge is just "ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh, can you feel me burnin'?" changed to "oh oh oh oh oh oh, do you hear me cryin'?" Those who don't know their R&B ballads are doomed to repeat them.
― Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 March 2008 19:18 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah, sorry wrong name. Not sure how that happened. I guess I am doomed to repeat my R&B ballads then (whatever that actually means). And I prefer "Burn", "U Got It Bad", and "Say Goodbye" to "With You".

I'm not sure I've even hear the "sexual eruption" version. and I've heard "Sensual Seduction" in clubs with the swears in the verses left in.

This week: "Love In This Club" holds strong at #1, but Chris Brown is still beating at the door. "Touch My Body" is up to #16 on airplay only, pretty impressive and likely to be another chart topper for Ms. Carey once released on iTunes. "Love Song" is still pushing up there, and has had much more staying power than I would have predicted. It's been overplayed but I still like it a lot! Lupe Fiasco's "Superstar" pushes into the top 10. Miley Cyrus is still sitting just outside. "All American Girl" making a slow climb towards being another huge Carrie Underwood crossover success. Soulja Boy's next single enters the top 50, let's see if he can avoid being remembered as a one hit wonder.
Airplay gainer = "No Air", Sales Gainer = "Bleeding Love", which jumps up to #21 and is now officially a cross-Atlantic hit! And "Hallelujah" hits #1 on the digital sales chart, thanks to Jason Castro. I wonder how high it would be on the hot 100 if eligible. We'll never know!

Also "Bleeding Love" is now up to #3 on the iTunes top 100!

I give them some strange sort of baffled propers for riding a Bush crib (BUSH FFS!) to their greatest-ever chart success, but it's really all been downhill since "Porno Star"...

The Buckcherry and the "Bleeding Love" make my eyes bleed tears of pain. I absolutely despise both of those.

I really just barely started to hear the Day26 single during the week of the album release, it hasn't gotten very far up the charts yet (not in the Hot 100, down at #39 on R&B chart). I guess it just goes to show that TV trumps music in terms of audience size every time, even w/ some random basic cable show that nobody I know watches.
― Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link
by that logic tila tequilla would be able to move like 2.6 million copies in her first week if she dropped an album

not that i disagree with you at all
day 26 is fairly popular w/ 106&Park viewers because QWANELL AND WILLIE ARE SO HAWT OMG. so I'm not surprised that they went to #1. Their album has some bangers on it.. "Together" = !!!.

yeah i know, a dozen used bin fillers from American Idol can disprove what i said, but it's not a hard and fast rule (ok i said "every time" but disregard that). just i'm never surprised when reality shows and random background music on Grey's Anatomy have a huge impact on music sales.

man bleeding love is awesome. i didn't realize it until i found out that one republic dude wrote it, but it kinda gets exactly where 'apologize' wanted to but didn't-- adult 40/hot 100 crossover but not in a mariah/mary j way in terms of produciton, def fancies itself as a forward thinking pop song with the drums, and whether it actually is or not i'm not sure but it sure stands out like i think 'apologize' wanted to

The wonky drums are my favorite thing about "Bleeding Love," it's the tune that doesn't quite stick with me.
I've poured the haterade on CB plenty of times but I have no problem with him on "No Air," I don't think his voice is necessarily weak on it, just relatively restrained.

"bleeding love" is alright, i keep thinking change an element push it one direction or another it'd be great. that organ is fantastic though. still it's not sophie b. hawkins! i was just adjusting to finding out will.i.am produced 'american boy', nevermind that it's a rework of an older will.i.am track. ye gods. 'impatient' sounded alright (it sounds to me like what it became - a demo), i like 'american boy' alot better for the vocals/chorus and for trimming some of the ideas down. that's sorta crazy about 'bleeding love' dipping in and out of the top spot, itunes obv. how much play is it getting on american idol? is it like 'bad day'?

I don't think so - I think the only song so far to hit #1 purely on sales was Taylor Hicks' "Do I Make You Buy Michael McDonald Records?"

I've actually heard this one on the radio already...I don't think it's a stretch to say that DC one of the most commercially viable winners right off the bat. Especially when his competition is this guy:

the-dream's kinda carved himself a nice niche on hip-hop/r&b radio since 'falsetto'

i don't really understand what this means since that was his 2nd hit (as a performer, and his dozenth as a writer)
― some dude, Monday, 16 June 2008 05:25 (fifteen years ago) link
good to see "Closer" catching on, though, that one's grown on me big time.
"shawty is 10" was a big pop song but it didn't really feel like an r&b song really-- basically what i mean is that i think "shawty is a 10" climbed to the top of rap/r&b cuz it was moving up the pop charts, whereas i think "falsetto" and "i luv your girl" are climbing up the pop charts on the strength of the rap/r&b push, which i think means he could kinda become the male version of keyshia cole, i.e. having every single be in the top 10 of rap/r&b for months w/o ever cracking the top 20 on the hot 100 (something like "let it go" excepted)

by top 10 of rap/r&b i guess i really mean top 5-7

can someone explain to me the diff b/w the pop 100 and the hot 100
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 19:23 (fifteen years ago) link
Hot 100 is the big singles chart that takes everything (airplay, iTunes sales, etc) in all genres into account, Pop 100 is (I think) airplay only for top 40 type pop stations.
― some dude, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 19:25 (fifteen years ago) link
that would make sense but this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_100 makes it more confusing?
so the pop 100 only takes into account radio play on top 40 stations?
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 19:27 (fifteen years ago) link
maybe not just top 40, but it's defintely slanted twd pop formats (i.e. no urban/rock/country/etc niches)

― blueski, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 19:36 (fifteen years ago) link
I think the idea is that it uses only Mainstream Top 40 and doesn't include any "urban" or "rhythmic" Top 40 stations, in an effort to present a chart that wasn't glutted (as the Hot 100 frequently is) with rap and R&B songs.

yeah, the only good part of this song is that fifteen-second segment where the dull-ass beat drops out, leaving us with a stumbling organ and a less annoying Natasha singing something along the lines of 'there's this place where i go that nobody knows' etc. Then the bass kicks in, she breaks into that butterflieeeeeeeeessssssssssss note and I swoon before she returns to the piece of shit that is "Pocketful of Sunshine." ;_;
I have similar relationships with Fergie songs.

correct me if im wrong but isn't "a milli" kinda like my humps 2.0 in terms of it's ascent. not a planned single, buyers forced the it on radio, forced the videos and the promos etc even tho the label had other songs planned as singles. i guess "my humps" had a faster ascent but i think the correlation is there

That Hayden Panettiere clip would make more sense if it was, like, vaguely latinate euro-trance-pop and Hayden's name was actually Hayla. But the song is quite good. Not as good as "Stars Are Blind", or not yet at least: the charms of kinda pointless sleazy summer reggae pop have to creep up on one, usually. Also I'll take her video boyfriend if she has no further use for him.

had no idea Akon still had the juice to take a relatively unestablished artist into the top 10. I haven't even heard "Dangerous" much at all.
what's up with "Lollipop" and the remix being two separate entries on the Hot 100? I thought remixes like that were generally counted toward the same airplay stats as the original (with stuff like "Love In This Club Pt. 2" getting separate entries through that altered title loophole).

a few things:
- it would be kinda cool if they started playing swagger like us on the radio even though it is pretty lame- anyone know how savage/soulja boy got hooked up? savage is now out on tour with him- 12 8 T-PAIN CAN'T BELIEVE IT <---finally- it appears that the strategy of taking "american boy" off itunes didn't actually work?- how are tokio hotel "famous" in this country?
― ilx: a miracle i helped create (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 18 September 2008 15:48 (fifteen years ago) link
-i hear "swagger like us" (ugh I hate that the official title spells it "swagga") on mix shows a lot, pretty sure i've heard it a little in regular rotation too. -who?-zzzz-"American Boy" went back on iTunes after 2 weeks of the strategy not working. -Tokio Hotel aren't really famous/popular in the U.S., I think MTV just worked really hard to pretend or anticipate that they would be.

52 48 SAVAGE FEATURING SO SWING
savage is a rapper from new zealand and this song "swing" was featured in a scene in knocked up (when seth rogen and the other dude meet the girls at a club, iirc) and then a few months ago it showed up on itunes as remixed by soulja boy and now its in the top 50 and savage has signed to universal. no idea how any of this happened.

yeah but i should note that "swing" was a #1 in new zealand in 2005 (hit #81 in the US) so this soulja boy remix is happening 3 years after the song hit and almost a year and a half after the movie

al didn't you write something about santogold on idolator?
i think if anything the song in the new commercial has a better chance of charting than l.e.s. artistes, though even that is probably pretty slim
― ilx: a miracle i helped create (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 September 2008 03:45 (fifteen years ago) link
idk, i guess this is a test to see how much impact 90210 has
― Tape Store, Friday, 26 September 2008 03:47 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah, I wrote something about "L.E.S. Artistes" popping up on the Modern Rock chart the same week that "Paper Planes" debuted, but it just dropped right back off after a week or two while the M.I.A. kept on climbing. didn't really strike me as a radio hit, I can barely remember how it goes now.
― some dude, Friday, 26 September 2008 03:53 (fifteen years ago) link
wait, forget my post. santogold has songs on gossip girl for the past three weeks. she should focus on promoting les artistes (it's the best! also amazing on 90210)
― Tape Store, Friday, 26 September 2008 04:29 (fifteen years ago) link
I could totally see "L.E.S. Artistes" as a Modern Rock hit. It sounds like a Yeah Yeah Yeahs sound.

if lights out was in an ipod commercial instead of a bid lime one it would've been a hit months ago
― you have been yellow carded by an actual referee (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 September 2008 04:39 (fifteen years ago) link
what? lights out is nice, but it would NOT be a pop hit today.
― Tape Store, Friday, 26 September 2008 05:03 (fifteen years ago) link
it's too subtle. "Les Artistes" has the massive chorus.
― Tape Store, Friday, 26 September 2008 05:04 (fifteen years ago) link
'lights out' is in the shitty second half of the album which i never listen to - don't even remember how it goes. dunno if they fit into the US pop market right now (would assume they do, really) but the first 5 tracks are all total earworms though. 'say aha' maybe most of all.

Love Lockdown starting to descend. I didn't know TI still had this in him. Excellent question here: "what's the barometer for telling if people actually like the song? 3 weeks @ #1? 4?" Having a Billboard top 10 isn't very meaningful anymore in and of itself.
― matt2, Thursday, 9 October 2008 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link
i just mean in relation to the old idea of "OMG #1 SINGLE" i.e. when "whatever you like" jumped 800 spots or w/e to #1 i thought it was going to be a flash-in-the-pan or for lack of a better term "fake #1 single" but it stayed up there for a bit so it's a legit #1 in my book. if "live your life" falls off next week or there after i would consider it a fake #1 for all intents and purposes
― kgb (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 16:25 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah iTunes has basically made the singles chart more like the album chart, where the size of an artist's fanbase and how big their last record was determines what's big, not whether the song itself is really well liked and getting listened to and requested by everyone everywhere.

I <3 this week's top 10:
1. "Whatever You Like" - T.I. *7 weeks*2. "Live Your Life" - T.I. feat. Rihanna *airplay gainer*3. "If I Were A Boy" - Beyoncé4. "So What" - Pink5. "Womanizer" - Britney Spears6. "Hot N Cold" - Katy Perry7. "Let It Rock'" - Kevin Rudolf feat. Lil Wayne8. "Miss Independent" - Ne-Yo9. "Disturbia" - Rihanna10. "I'm Yours'" - Jason Mraz *sales gainer*
Minus "Miss Independent" though. But even Beyonce's new song is growing on me.

miss independent is the best song on there by miles
I kind of hate that the default for pop in '08 is this stompy 4x4 that doesn't have enough syncopation going on above it to feel like house or disco

G'n'R down from 3 to 18, more a case of 'out of sight out of mind' than 'absence makes the heart grow fonder'.
