paulhw, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:24 (6 years ago) Permalink

I voted for One. I love Ghost but I think Supreme Clientele is a somewhat overrated album. One, Nutmeg, Apollo Kids Wu Banga 101 and We Made It are in the good to great range, but the rest is pretty forgettable, and "Stroke of Death" might be the worst beat in the history of hip-hop. Certainly a good album, but I wouldn't even put it as Ghost's best, let alone the classic some consider it.

ablaeser, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:38 (6 years ago) Permalink

Agreed. Ironman is still my favorite. But that's a different poll!

Come on, it's "Buck 50" by a fucking mile. Meth kills it:

Who I'm is? The phenom, them niggaz can't live
Who I'm is? We ain't got shit, somethin got to give
Y'all done flipped y'all wig, blacked out the crib
Die and live for my nigs and my bad-ass kids, freeze
*sniff* Lookin at your ice like GEEZ!
I'm plottin on the mousetrap, about to snatch the cheese
I heard y'all kids is bout that, psychotherapy
You buggin where the couch at? Wu, til they bury me
Never tell a lie, like George with the cherry tree
Now it's cherry pie - if it's not broke, let it be
Ain't nuttin nice in - New York
Stick you for your cake and your icing
That tough talk? Don't mean nuttin when you're up North
So keep them hands where I can see em like you want freedom
You know that saying - if you can't join 'em, beat 'em
and push your way in
We ain't acrobats but we flip on occasion
Pick the pace up, pants saggin pull your waist up
Niggaz rentin slum jewels from Jacob, FOOL!
You're like, "Dude! I don't like your fuckin attitude
Frontin on my Clan from the Stat' when we ain't mad at you"

I agree with the people who say SC is overrated. I actually like Bulletproof Wallets more than this, it has better beats and more variety in songs - there's nothing like "The Forest" or "Flowers" on Supreme Clientele. But "Apollo Kids" is my favourite on it.

nutmeg uber alles.

Umm...this album is not overrated. At all. It's Ghostface at his lyrical and artistic peak.

brightscreamer, Thursday, 20 December 2007 00:26 (6 years ago) Permalink

Maybe, but with mediocre assembly-line Wu beats. For example, "Nutmeg" has a strong intro, but also incredibly weak sounding drums, even though the production is by RZA.

Tuomas, Thursday, 20 December 2007 00:36 (6 years ago) Permalink

"the dumb are mostly intrigued by the drum"

lukas, Thursday, 20 December 2007 00:42 (6 years ago) Permalink

The dumb are mostly intrigued by that line.

The Reverend, Thursday, 20 December 2007 00:48 (6 years ago) Permalink

Tuomas...ever heard "All That I Got Is You" or "Hollow Bones"? RZA's beats don't always have strong sounding drums. I think the weird beat adds to the loopy lyrics. The combination gives the song an alien vibe. I sure as fuck had never heard anything like Nutmeg when I first heard it. Can't say I've heard anything like it ever since, either.

You can be such a nugget, Rev.

brightscreamer, Thursday, 20 December 2007 01:11 (6 years ago) Permalink

Meh, I'm just tired of seeing that line quoted every time anyone criticizes beats on a Wu-Tang album, even though it wasn't clever any of the previous eight-hundred times.

The Reverend, Thursday, 20 December 2007 01:19 (6 years ago) Permalink

That and the "half short and twice strong" line.

The Reverend, Thursday, 20 December 2007 01:19 (6 years ago) Permalink

The Reverend's zing was on point

this album is only overrated in the sense that so many people talk about wu tang like they were the only group that made rap music in the 90s.

i'm voting cherchez la ghost bcuz its a banger. not his best lyrically or anything but fire club track

Too hard.

I listened to this last night actually and on that basis I'm going with "Buck 50" - yeah because of Meth, but Redman sounds great on this ("Y'ALL MORE LIKE A TRAINING BRA! WET BEHIND THE EAR, YA NOT PREPARED FOR THE PROJECT FLOW WITH EXTRA STAIRS!") and that beat is just insane - one of RZA's best club banger grooves that I've heard. Would love to drop it in the middle of a house set.

Other times it might be "Nutmeg", "One", "Apollo Kids", "Mighty Healthy", "We Made It", "Child's Play", "Cherchez La Ghost" or "Wu Banga 101" (often it's "Wu Banga 101" though).

This is my favourite Wu-Tang related album after Iron Flag, mostly because of how strong and varied the beats are. Most Wu-Tang albums I find it hard to get through in one sitting.

I'm kinda upset about all the tracks that received zeroes here. But yeah, esp. "Mighty Healthy", which is what I imagined Enter The 36 Chambers would sound like before I heard it. I was always disappointed that it didn't.

Tim F, Monday, 18 August 2008 06:17 (6 years ago) Permalink

"Mighty Healthy" is probably the most flat-out aggressive track on the album.

The Reverend, Monday, 18 August 2008 06:36 (6 years ago) Permalink

That's what I mean!

Tim F, Monday, 18 August 2008 06:39 (6 years ago) Permalink

Too bad we won't be seeing Ghost in Mighty Healthy mode any time soon. He said his new album is going to be R&B. Sigh.

brightscreamer, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 00:05 (6 years ago) Permalink

thats cool with me. id rather he do more like that than more dilla/peterock style rap nerd bait

deej, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 00:19 (6 years ago) Permalink

Why on Earth? His worst material has been the numerous crossover attempts. You wouldn't ask Kool G Rap to do an R&B album, would you? Damn fans like you for leading him astray.

After writing that, I realized you have to be kidding. Please listen to IRONMAN.

brightscreamer, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 03:17 (6 years ago) Permalink

Please listen to CAMAY or, for that matter, ALL THAT I GOT IS YOU.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 03:27 (6 years ago) Permalink

Don't get confused and think his new material will be on par with RZA's shit. If he collaborates with these new bullshit cats, it'll end up sounding like an album full of Momma or Ghost Showers. He specifically said it won't be soulful.

myndbloom, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:38 (6 years ago) Permalink

BPW is an ok album. RZA's touch was sorely missed, though. A lot of it needed editing, and it's too bad some great tracks were left off due to sample clearance issues.

brightscreamer, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 22:33 (6 years ago) Permalink

Also, if the new album is going to be all R&B, i hope it features a solid amount of 60 Second Assassin.

myndbloom, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 06:51 (6 years ago) Permalink

RZA actually produced more tunes for Bulletproof Wallets than Supreme Clientele, so I don't see how his "touch was missed" there. And BW is definitely a better album than SC. Some of the beats on SC have a pretty crappy lo-fi sound, whereas the beats on BW are more varied and sound better. In general I think BW is better because it has more varied tunes and moods - "Flowers" is one of the best Wu ballads. The nervous and screechy mood Ghostface is for the whole of SC gets kinda irritating for my ears at some point, I'd much prefer to listen to a few R&B tunes from him once in a while.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 08:58 (6 years ago) Permalink

I mean, just listen to the drums on "Nutmeg", for example... How can anyone think they sound good? The drum sound is so weak and tinny.

You know, I don't really mean no harm... but it just happens you know...

myndbloom, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 13:45 (6 years ago) Permalink

Tuomas...RZA didn't oversee BPW like he did Supreme Clientele. He worked on SC from its inception to its completion. He helped pick beats and mix the music. SC sounds like a RZA-produced Wu album. BPW sounds too clean...like what I'd imagine a Ghostface Roc-a-Fella album would sound like. The drums on Nutmeg are supposed to sound like that. Get rid of your preconceptions on what hip-hop drums are supposed to sound like, and you'll learn to appreciate it. Hollow Bones, anyone? 260?

brightscreamer, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 23:47 (6 years ago) Permalink

I don't care if the drums were supposed sound like that, they still sound shitty to me. I'm not too fond of the drums on Hollow Bones, but in it they at least fit the overall sound, which is kinda weird and disorienting. Nutmeg just sounds like a rather regular hip-hop beat with a shitty drum sound; I think the punchy sample used in it would required stronger drums to emphasize it, now the drums just make the the whole beat weaker. Overall, I've never understood why low-fi/tinny sounds are supposed to be a good thing. I've always preferred the cleaner RZA beats, that's why The W is my favourite Clan album.

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 08:48 (6 years ago) Permalink

Speaking of R&B Ghost: http://www.zshare.net/audio/17405824ecbd2841/

And before you tell me how awesome his verse is, think about how boring the shit surrounding it would get on a full length album.
