De La Soul formed in 1988 and quickly created what is now regarded as an indelible classic, the visionary “Three Feet High and Rising.” The legendary album, most notable for its creation of the “in-between-song skit,” was an instant success. Since then “the skit” has become a loathed tradition in rap music because of its failure to convey any thematic meaning on albums. But De La Soul has persevered in a genre where longevity is difficult to maintain.

Hip hop fashion is a distinctive style of dress originating with the African-American youth living in New York City and Los Angeles. Each city contributed various elements to its overall style seen worldwide today. Hip hop fashion complements the expressions and attitudes of hip hop culture in general. Hip hop fashion has changed significantly during its history, and today it is a prominent part of popular fashion as a whole across the world and for all ethnicities. The dashikis, baggy pants, giant clocks that hang around your neck, throwback jerseys — they’re all vibrant and different and fun.

im often pleased by hurricane fennessey
― and what, Friday, 31 August 2007 18:06 (sixteen years ago) link
Sean “Hurricane” Fennessey, meanwhile, had some things to say about the list, as well as some things to say about hip-hop blogging in general. He was too busy doing whatever it is he does to come up with his own list, but according to The Hurricane, the overall list skewed “Eastern and obvious,” which he took as a sign that hip-hop blogging is pointless compared to the important work he does with Vibe magazine.
The thing is, The Hurricane has had his share of run-ins with hip-hop bloggers over the years. About two years ago, I had to call shenanigans on the fact that he gave Kanye West’s Late Registration a glowing, ridonkulous review in Pitchfork and didn’t bother to mention anywhere in it that he just so happens to be the proprietor a Kanye West fansite.
Later, a guy named Ian Cohen called him out for his similarly ridonkulous Clipse stannery, to which The Hurricane responded with the following email, which was widely circulated in lower-level music writing circles. Normally I draw the line at posting people’s personal correspondence, but I figured this would be instructive as far as understandin this guy’s thought process.
Just for the record, I read blogs, just like every other magazine editor I know. If you actually want to do this for a living, you really ought to be careful about airing people out.
No hard feelings. You just sound like a chump.

Everyone knows Mr. Sean Fennessey--the kid seems to have connects in every city. If it's not Philly Cheesesteaks, it's good old New York Pretzels. He is a global presence not only on the web but in real life. Like Biz Markie, Sean is a large presence in more ways than one. His personality is matched by his large frame and, although infamous for "wearing it well," the Irishman is getting out of control. Sean, consider this an intervention--you're shit is getting off the handle. Want proof? Take a look at these recent pictures of the kid. He literally dwarfs the normal-sized Jamz and looks like he's about to take a king-sized bite out of his head. He also envelopes my picturesque backyard with his odd largeosity. Please believe me

Speaking of, have we had a thread dedicated to "Who Knew"? I don't think so. Maybe this should be it. Damn, that song is beautiful. I love that really tense buildup at the end. Too much time on coke/ecstacy/sluts/hipsters retroactively soaking up Daft Punk (too late, Swizz did this earlier and better) and trying to make Puffy circa 1998 music videos in misguided attempt to catch up with the cool kids he was always too nerdy to hang with until he realized in that typically coked-out megalomaniacal way that he was the biggest pop star ever. P.S. Common looks so Obi Wan on that new album - stay in Brooklyn loser, Chi doesn't need you and never did.
― Gavin, Sunday, 2 September 2007 22:23 (sixteen years ago) link
Kanye was doing beats for Bad Boy artists in '98, I don't think he needed to "catch up" with what Puffy was doing back then.

Have you seen the Stronger video? It's like a throwback to 1998, but in an era where no one watches MTV any more.
This album sucks, Kanye got on the synth bandwagon too late and hasn't figured them out yet. He's trying to replace the old retro-soul-vibe with this hamfisted future aesthetic (those idiotic glasses!) but cannot pull it off. I blame new friends and the addiction to that drug... uh, I guess he said fame in that mixtape, so nm.
P.S. Did I hurt you guyses feelings?

Issues tackled at the conference speak to how many things can be discerned from studying names -- chosen names, given names, place names, product names, names in fiction and names in history. In the "Queer Names'' panel alone, vast stores of cultural information were mined from, for instance, the methodical study of gay male porn names. Who knew that although drag queens usually employ sexual innuendo or humor in their stage names, it is strikingly uncommon for male gay porn stars to do so? Apparently, bland names are perceived to be more attractive.

I agree that Kanye's synth work on the album could be better and it's kind of a weird aesthetic fit for him, and that the 'futuristic' videos/clothes are cheesy and he's letting A-Trak or whoever turn him onto some wack hipster shit. But, as a great man once said: "No hard feelings. You just sound like a chump."
― Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 2 September 2007 23:33 (sixteen years ago) link

This is by far his best album, imo, but that's coming from someone who liked about 75% of his first one, maybe 50% of his second and, despite thinking he's an awesome producer, I've never liked his flow, or most of his lyrics.
Suffice it to say, the production, lyrics and flow on this album are by far his most solid. He's not just doing that fuckin' annoying thing where he rhymes the same sounding thing over and over ("She was supposed to get TYco with the money, she went and got LYpo with the money, she should've got insured GEico with your money" ... ugh).
He's still not the greatest rapper, but this is definitely a solid album. "Drunk and Hot girls" was a grower, but I love that track now. And "Everything I Am" with the primo scratches is awesome.
Much like with the new Arcade Fire, an artist who I found to have an overrated album / persona came back with an album that actually justified their hype, proving that I'm not always an elitist asshole who hates popular music.

From what i've heard, "Good Life" is easily the best track, and I attribute 65% of its awesomeness to T. Pain's contribution...30% to the beat (Go PYT sample!)...5% to Kanye's verses (obv. Kanye's production belongs in that 95% chunk...I love how he treates T. Pain as an instrument rather than as some quirky guest vocalist)

Does "Stronger" sound any different from the single version on anyone's copy of the album? Kanye said in a few recent interviews that he had Timbaland re-do the drums for the LP version of the song at the last minute, but it sounds exactly the same as it did before on the copy I downloaded. Maybe it'll be the new version on the retail CD next week, though?

pretty happy with the album really. i think the thing with kanye is he always treads that very fine line wrt him being a completey annoying arsehole, and it's the very small things that validate that stuff in your head; i wz kinda dreading another overblown 'late registration' epic (even though that was still great at the time) as much as i feared a shiny jap hipster dinky toy horror like where 'stronger' and the mixtape suggested he was at, and so even though you do still get all of that stuff in this one the presence of the simpler oldskool roc type stuff leaves you with the impression of the dorky likeable kanye from 03 you like to think still exists somewhere, or ever existed even. haha like smiling/shaking yr head to that "buy any jeans necessary" line for instance.

Oh well.
Kanye's album outsells 50 Cent's by 200,000 on day one September 12, 2007 04:59pm
50 Cent said he'd hang up his mic if Kanye West's new album outsold his. He might have spoken too soon.
Critics are raving about West's Graduation - and its already sold 200,000 more units than Fiddy's Curtis since yesterday's same-day release in the US.
The hip-hop egomaniacs were pitted against each other when, last month, Fiddy said on <i>sohh.com: </i>
"If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on September 11, I'll no longer (perform) music. I'll write music and work with my other artists but I won't put out any more solo albums."
Associated Press said on the strength of the albums, West could claim a "landslide victory."
"... Graduation still sound like a logical step forward. Yet Curtis sounds like Fiddy is standing in place ... Fiddy's outsized cockiness sounds like a comfortable artist repeating himself, afraid to tinker with his winning formulas."
Ryan Dombal, from Pitchfork, gave Fiddy just 4.9 stars out of 10.
"in direct opposition to Kanye's fearless, risk-taking, Graduation, 50's new album is a blatant rehash - a bottom-line sequel that insults the same audience it mildlessly panders to."
Respected sie HiphopDX said: "50 cent may be a superstar, but Curtis is pedestrian."
But critics heaped praise on West's Graduation.
Rolling Stone gave the album 4.5 stars out of five, saying: "This is an album that you first like, then love."
HiphopDX echoed the sentiment.
"Kanye has created another must-have album that will continuously bump on your CD players and mp3's for months to come."

― The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:41 (sixteen years ago) link
I thought Late Registration was the more-enjoyable-than-it-had-a-right-to-be victory lap album. This one, I think, is too short. I'm tired of all these big deal rap albums that are 13 songs, 4-5 of which were advance singles/leaks. Graduation has the same amount of filler/bad idea tracks as the last album, just fewer solid songs and obvious highlights to balance it out.
― Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:42 (sixteen years ago) link
I admire how Kanye's become like Madonna: he collaborate with a hot producer, then discards him after he's learned all his tricks. "Everything I Am," "Homecoming," and "Good Life" are so much denser than anything on LR.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:44 (sixteen years ago) link
I don't get how people sit through 80-min monstrosities, esp. ones by people whose obnoxious tendencies become exacerbated as they outstay their welcome. (That said, I love The College Dropout even as I would like to take an ax to portions of it. Late Registration doesn't have enough good material to build a 40-minute album, let alone a disc-filler.

) <--- close parenthesis
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:02 (sixteen years ago) link
I don't get how people get so intimidated by the thought of paying for 80 minutes of music when they can so easily pick and choose the songs they like or break it up into multiple listening sessions. I'm just saying, I think fewer songs more often than not merely gives the impression of higher quality control, and I'd rather get my money's worth and get a bunch of new songs and make up my mind about which ones I like than pay all that money for maybe 8 songs I haven't heard on the radio already.
― Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:09 (sixteen years ago) link

even when albums are 10 tracks long i rarely have the time to sit and listen to the whole album front to back. If I do, I've probably also got time to listen to another five tracks
― deej, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:11 (sixteen years ago) link
I suppose I should just start a thread for the Great Rap Album Length Debate already since I seem to have this argument a couple times a year, but I really hate this shrinking album trend. Hey Swizz Beatz, you made 80 billion songs this year, but when I pay cash money for your album, all you've got are 10 songs, a remix, and a voicemail from Snoop Dogg? Fuck you!
― Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:14 (sixteen years ago) link
but WHAT A VOICEMAIL!
― max, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:18 (sixteen years ago) link
I dunno, I still hold on to notions that albums should be listened to front to back in one sitting, and the idea of correlating value to amount of music is just entirely foreign to me for whatever reasons. I never really want to listen to any one person for more than an hour at a time or so. I find myself never even listening to long albums more than once or twice a lot of times, even when I like a certain number of songs on them.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:22 (sixteen years ago) link
I guess I find long albums intimidating.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:23 (sixteen years ago) link
Honestly, Reverend, I feel pretty much the same way. I tend to listen to albums in one sitting and do get impatient with longer ones. With rock and underground rap, I generally prefer shorter albums. I just feel differently with mainstream rap/pop records where half the songs are put out for media saturation beforehand and there's a lot less to discover or hear with fresh ears on the album itself.
― Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:27 (sixteen years ago) link
'd rather get my money's worth and get a bunch of new songs and make up my mind about which ones I like than pay all that money for maybe 8 songs I haven't heard on the radio already.
Capitalist!
Seriously, if I had to pick and choose from 80 minutes worth of music, chances are that it's not a good album! You don't discard tracks from good albums.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:27 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah, I can understand that, but I've gotten a bit lazy about searching stuff out early, like in this case I'd only heard "Stronger" and "Can't Tell Me Nothing" beforehand. (xp)
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:31 (sixteen years ago) link
the thread al wants to start is less about "album length" and more about what an "album" is, i think--because isn't it going to come down to ppl who hold the view that albums are in their entirety statements or works of art that should be listened to from front to back vs. ppl who hold the view that buying an album is like buying 12-18 songs and sequencing is a secondary concern if one at all
― max, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:32 (sixteen years ago) link
I should say that for me, 8 songs I haven't heard already is more or less ideal.

― max, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:34 (sixteen years ago) link
The funny thing is I'm not even a pick & choose/discard songs type at all, although I'm making a devil's-advocate argument from that perspective to an extent. My deal is more that I want to listen to it all the way through, but I'd rather listen to a long and inconsistent record and be like "OK, there was some bad stuff, but plenty of good stuff too," than listen to a short and inconsistent record and at the end feel like "that's it? that's all? Van Damme!" And really the argument is only really pertinent here because Kanye is pretty inconsistent by nature and so those are the only 2 options.

I know kids no longer think of albums as sequences of great songs, but as a critic I listen to too much music to waste time on dud songs: the more songs I skip on a second listen, the less apt I am to give the album props.

i think it has a lot to do with how we listen to music, too. most of my CD/album listening is done in the car and i dont mind long albums because every time i start my car it picks up in the place where it left off--im not starting from track 1 and missing track 18 every time.

I tend not to mind double albums so much because I just end up listening to each disc separately rather than trying to force it all in one go. That said, Underground Kingz is remarkably consistent for an album of its length and the only thing I'd remove are the crunk tracks.

Jazze Pha makes more sense in the context of a UGK album way better than Lil Jon or Swizz Beatz.
I'm not anti-skits per se (hell, I quoted a De La skit a few posts ago), but I do admire Kanye for going for skit overboard on his first album (the two consecutive skits really pissed me off) to no skits at all on his third.

What's weird about Graduation is that I just get next to no vibe/impression from it AT ALL, I play it through and eventually it's over and that's it and I have no desire to listen again. It's like air. Usually when I say "it's like air" i'm referring to some shit I've heard, way, way too much but I've only listened to this album like 4-5 times since buying it yesterday.
An analogy no-one will agree with:

It's ass-kissing, but it's also kinda wounded. Which is either one of Kanye's most egregious "look at me and empathize with me" plays on the record, or it's pretty honest. Maybe it's tacky to write about someone is your hero and hurt your feelings, but he did, and there's a certain amount of balls to that whatever his intention.

eh, although I called him "Euro-pandering" in another thread just now I do agree, but I think it kinda goes without saying. i mean it's not like there's a huge built-in audience for Daft Punk/Peanut Butter & Jelly that's there to cash in on. if anything he's going after the big white folks money with the Adam Levine/Chris Martin collabs.

While rappers before were mostly using similar soul and funk samples, Kanye sampled Daft Punk. He’s had Adam Levine and Chris Martin on his tracks while having Jon Brion — Fiona Apple’s producer — produce his last album. All of his songs have real hooks, while his singing might not be great, it can carry most of the choruses. It’s also clear that the production and hummability of every song is of near equal importance of the rhymes or the verbal flow, which has been true for very, very few popular hip hop albums. While Gold Digger may have been a cascade of clever rhymes and imagery, it was getting Jamie Foxx to sing as Ray Charles and Jon Brion’s funky electric piano on the third verse that made the song something special.

Wack. Anyway, does anyone else feel like the whole album feels like a drunk night out or a weekend day? Between the synth club vibe thing, the obnoxious drunk swagger with lines about how he's so special, I could get any of you girls, etc. to the end where he's all like "jay, you're like my brother, man..." you get the entire timeline of being in a drunk party lifestyle.

The show's what Kanye would expect from a band A-Trak likes. Loud and aggressive and playful, and he knows he's going to have bruises in the morning. He wants them.
He feels alive like he hasn't in what feels like months. The music drills into his brain, his heart echoes the thump of the bass, and he raises his hands above his head, loses himself in it, in the people, the press of bodies around him. Every once in awhile he catches a glimpse of A-Trak, eyes drifting to his from where he holds court at the bar - making sure I'm okay, Kanye thinks - and smiles. He can't disappear because no one escapes the watchful gaze of A-Trak. Kanye feels safe - first time in awhile for that, too.
When it's all over, A-Trak drives him home. They're silent, most of the way. A-Trak is like that a lot, when the cameras are off and they're out of the public eye. He chooses his words carefully, Kanye thinks. Knows the value of quiet. Smart guy.
They sit in Kanye's driveway for several long minutes, and Kanye mostly waits, because he senses there's something to say. He's more perceptive than people give him credit for.
A-Trak's fingers tap on the steering wheel. "Rosie O'Donnell wants to buy one of my bikes."
"Huh." Kanye's not sure what to say.
"She's gay."
"Yeah, I kind of already figured that out." There's a ghost of a smile on Kanye's lips.
"I'm gay, too, you know."
Kanye starts to giggle, because yes, yes, it's true. A-Trak is gay. A-Trak told them that years ago, when the whole thing started out, and he's not at all sure why it's funny, but Rosie's gay, and so is A-Trak, and maybe they'll be grand marshals of some Big Gay Parade somewhere. The giggles turn to full-fledged laughter, and before Kanye realizes what's happening he's laughing so hard he's crying. Then he is crying, great big fat tears streaming down his face and A-Trak's arms around him, A-Trak's voice soft in his ear.
It's been a long time since he's let himself cry.
When he's done, he wipes his face and gets out of the car, nodding at A-Trak, who rolls down his window. "Good to see you're still alive in there," he says, and backs out of the driveway. "By the way, you should check out this record by these French robot dudes, Daft Punk. Everyone at the club loves it."
Kanye stands there for a long time, well after his taillights have disappeared into the distance.

He's asleep, passed out on the couch in the booth, when gentle fingers nudge him awake. He opens his eyes, and A-Trak is fidgeting in front of him, bouncing on his toes, all nervous energy.
"What?" he asks.
"It's done, I think. I think maybe it's done," A-Trak says, and hands him a disc.
Kanye swallows, nodding, pulling himself to his feet. "We should take a listen then, huh?"
They go into the den, and Kanye slides the CD into the tray, presses play on the stereo, and sits down on the couch, his head in his hands, already wincing before he's heard the first note.
It's going to be bad. It's going to be awful, he knows. All that work, all Mike Dean and Jon Brion and Timbaland and Toomp have done, wasted, because Kanye doesn't have what it takes.
"Kanye."
He jerks his head up.
"Just. Give it a chance, okay?"
Kanye swallows and nods, and closes his eyes. He listens.
He tips his head and he listens, and before he knows it he's shaking, his face wet, and he's brushing at his eyes fiercely because he's not a fucking woman, okay? He's not.
But those are his words and his music and his voice - his - and it doesn't hurt. Doesn't hurt to hear it like he thought it would.
Something starts to loosen in his chest, and he smiles.

i think alex might be wrong on the whole, so many of those ridiculous reviews of clipse et al used the "ok so who knows if they REALLY deal cocaine, what is important is..." apologetic zzz. There is a fakeness and distance about the rapping that appeals bcuz its NOT so into authenticity ... it flagrantly disregards 'show don't tell,' the cool is purely surface level and like any good pomo hipsteur i doubt the 'truth' really enters into it for most.

My father is a police officer. I know crime sucks. But in the same way I want to hear him tell me stories about wiretaps and drug busts, I yearn to hear the other side from Raekwon the Chef and Kool G Rap. There’s something stirring and electric about the found sound approach hip-hop uses. It’s an abandonment of tradition in that most songs don’t use instrumentation, and verbal acrobatics are consistently on display. Raekwon may not know Raymond Chandler. He doesn’t have to. He’s already Phillip Marlowe.

i therefore bought it.
i must say, the first 6 songs are wonderful, but it does trail off towards the end.
Now way a 4 (that is fucking ridiculous) and it makes me quite sad that someone would let it be a 4 at Drowned in Sound.

and i STILL can't tell the difference between the album version and the single version. what kanye doesn't realize is that the snare is what's wrong with "stronger" more than the kick, but the first step in fixing his shitty drums is admitting he has a problem, i guess.

kanye's mom died: http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Music/11/11/obit.west.ap/index.html
this seems like a surprise, since i thought she was kind of young. anyway, this is really sad since it was obvious that they were really close. thoughts are w/ kanye.
on a purely selfish level (i hope this isn't too soon), it will be very interesting to see where this takes him musically.

Imdb says Kanye was in London and flew back immediately, cancelling all engagements.
Donda West died Saturday night in Los Angeles, said the spokesman, who asked for anonymity because not all family members had been notified.
The logic of this "spokesman" is baffling and disgusting ("I'm going to the media but I don't want people to know I'm the reason family members are hearing about it on cnn.com first"). Is this the kind of story that needs to break asap?

West died Saturday night at 8:29 p.m., Corral said.
Cindy Woelfle with Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center in Marina Del Rey told CNN that paramedics brought Donda West to the emergency room Saturday evening. Attempts were made to revive her, but were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead before 9 p.m.
Woelfle said the procedure West had undergone did not take place at the hospital where she died.

A coroner's spokesman said an autopsy would be performed later this week. He did not know what sort of surgery West underwent, but media reports said she had a breast reduction and abdominoplasty, a major procedure commonly referred to as a "tummy tuck."
The celebrity news Web site TMZ.com quoted a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Jan Adams, as saying he performed surgery on West before she died, that her death was unforeseen and he did nothing wrong.

"Kanye was doing beats for Bad Boy artists in '98, I don't think he needed to "catch up" with what Puffy was doing back then."
making beats for bad boy in 98 = not the same as doing bad boy videos in 98.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Saturday, 24 November 2007 18:43 (sixteen years ago) link
don't know why you're dredging up that boring argument from 3 months ago now, but Gavin was saying that Kanye was trying to "catch up with the cool kids he was always too nerdy to hang with" re: Puffy-type videos, which makes no sense because Kanye was active in the late 90's pop rap scene as a producer years he molded his public image as the Y2K answer to Tribe. dude idolized Puffy and Mase!

he idolised puffy and mase but he also idolised native tongues cos he was a geekazoid. i cant imagine he had that huge a part in all the big balling that all the bad boy artists were involved in. he wasnt exactly one of the hitmen was he? he was just a small time producer back then.

I have no idea what point you're trying to make now or if it even has anything to do with the post by that Gavin dude that I was responding to, but he said Kanye was suddenly making big Puffy videos as if he was never part of that scene "until he realized in that typically coked-out megalomaniacal way that he was the biggest pop star ever," and I was just pointing out that Kanye has always been blatantly careerist and aspiring to be part of that sphere. of course he was an unknown peripheral figure in the 90's and didn't actually become a star until about 2004, but I'm pretty sure he would've put on a shiny suit in a second if they'd asked him to.
(lol xpost)
