Wow, is Youtube ever great for metal. If anyone is interested, here are links to some of the best things I've seen (I don't tend to like death, black or progressive metals very much). The only favourite metal groups I even have that I didn't link to here are Iron Maiden, Accept (there are videos there by both bands, of course), Killers, Heavy Load, Parasite, Cirith Ungol and Sarcofagus. I saw a pretty odd clip of Uli Roth doing the Vivaldi "Spring" music, too, but, uh, you might wanna look for that yourself.

Baron Rojo with Paul Gillman - "Resistire" live in Venezuela, 2001

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4QEuiLpSlM&search=paul%20gillman%20resistire

Vortex - "Open the Gates" video (they're even doing a DVD, apparently, where they're going to include this old clip)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4GOhFuhQ9A&search=vortex%20open%20the%20gates

Acid - "Black Car" video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ4yeYQcbEg&search=acid%20black%20car

Killer - "Kleptomania" interview, vocal competition and live TV performance. Here's a band I want to hear new things by, because I hear they've gotten a keyboard player.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAWozsmgpek&search=killer%20kleptomania

Running Wild - "Soldiers of Hell" live from 1985 (there's a lot up there from this same concert, with unreleased songs and everything, and some from 1989 in their later style as well (in better quality). It's good to see something this early from them, though, and here's a song that's easy to like.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eBpRWUMWek&search=running%20wild%20

Loudness - "Rock and Roll Crazy Nights" video (this isn't the only video for this song, is it? I don't remember it being like this at all. There are a few clips of Akira Takasaki soloing up on Youtube as well, but, you know.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv6UWQejoFI&search=loudness

Stormwitch - "Emerald Eye" video (not good quality, but holy crap, it's Stormwitch! It feels like you're Andy Muecke's dentist or something!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TfudFDFVTI&search=stormwitch

Trust - "Antisocial" video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH9gAQyK6vY&search=trust%20antisocial

Rage - "Invisible Horizons" video (I loved his voice back when it sounded like this)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ka2vERmTtfc&search=rage%20metal

Trouble - "Run to the Light" video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeDINbmiH24&search=trouble%20metal

Raven - "On and On" video - maybe not their best song, but it's not bad at all and a decent "1984-breakthrough"-style funny video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pCeMuOKrTU&search=raven%20metal

Saxon - "And the Bands Played On" - live

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aRlqLiAn8w&search=saxon

Candlemass - "Bewitched" video (In this video, Messiah Marcolin almost gets Karen Carpenter to play drums for the band through hypnosis, but then he appears not to be able to find her among all the rest of the victims, so he gets his aerobics class to keep time with their feet).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3uvf0cn0jo&search=candlemass

Nightmare - "Silent Room" video (this is a kind of recent song from an album I don't know, but they seem to still be good. Jo Amore has a nice, sort of Dio-y voice.)

That Osmonds clip is like an Al Hartley comic in real life!

Ricki Belloni (Pangolino 3), Thursday, 27 April 2006 01:32 (twenty years ago)

I liked the Metal Church song. I remember what I had heard sounding good some years ago, but I've never had one of their albums.

Ricki Belloni (Pangolino 3), Thursday, 27 April 2006 01:42 (twenty years ago)

Eric Adams from Manowar has a kind of Harvey Keitel thing going on in that intro.

Ricki Belloni (Pangolino 3), Thursday, 27 April 2006 01:44 (twenty years ago)

jeezus, that osmonds clip is so phat. one of my fave songs made 100 times cooler with the fancy footwork. and the don man on bass! love it to death. thanks for the links, brian. i don't have time to add my own right now.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 27 April 2006 01:48 (twenty years ago)

Jesus, that Trust clip! so great.

the Osmonds won't load for me?!?! stupid Youtube.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 27 April 2006 02:36 (twenty years ago)

It seems to be up there several times - maybe one of the other ones will work for you. There's also a pop version by a group called Westlife with Donny guest-singing.

Ricki Belloni (Pangolino 3), Thursday, 27 April 2006 02:49 (twenty years ago)

j/k, I love you Youtube. I fucking crackwhored out with it like all day Saturday.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 27 April 2006 02:55 (twenty years ago)

and yeah, ok, I did load the Osmonds clip, thanks Ricki. There's actually two different versions on there! the "drummer-less" one with all the fancy footwork and some other one in front of an AB-like audience. double the pleasure.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 27 April 2006 03:04 (twenty years ago)

I'll look for the drummer-ful version; I played the other clip a few times because I couldn't decide whether I liked the song or not. I wasn't crazy about the lead vocal (Donny?) in the version I saw, but I like the higher second vocal and think the song is good. I had to listen without watching before I could really hear it because the dancing fucked up my ears.

I have that Alice Cooper footage on tape somewhere, although my copy is worse, and you can hardly see him, so I enjoyed watching this version more. I should look if they've got the rest of that show up.

If we're going back as far as that, here's Atomic Rooster doing "Save Me" on Beat Club:

also badass.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 27 April 2006 03:43 (twenty years ago)

someone needs to a straight, balls-out non-ironic cover of that song. if done by the right band it would be heavy as fuck!

Nitro - Freight Train

Awesome vocals, great guitar theatrics, camera-filling hair.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 27 April 2006 04:07 (twenty years ago)

xpost - I like hearing the horns on that second-posted version of "Crazy Horses", and I've caught on now that it's Donny playing the keyboard / strip part. I didn't like the first vocal any better that time. I think it would have sounded great with the Bjorn Ulvaeus "Watch Out" rock voice.

Ricki Belloni (Pangolino 3), Thursday, 27 April 2006 04:35 (twenty years ago)

someone needs to a straight, balls-out non-ironic cover of that song. if done by the right band it would be heavy as fuck!

TANK did that, but it was actually sort of timid compared to the osmonds version. but that entire album (power of the hunter) suffered from a thin production that would've been more suited to the pretenders than the punk-metal band they were.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 27 April 2006 05:25 (twenty years ago)

I've never been entirely sure how much Nitro were satire -- I don't think they were either, or at least they didn't agree among themselves.

That Thor clip is a real eye-opener. I guess he makes more sense to me now; I hadn't ever heard a word before about where he came from. I kind of threw him in with Piledriver and maybe something like Muscle Bitches, but I'd never really thought about the background of any of those guys.

I enjoyed the Rhapsody song quite a bit. The choir must have cost more than they figured.

The Thor video would seem to be taken from the "An-Thor-logy" DVD which is quite good. But it's not close to being the best material on that disc. Pirating a piece of the Thor DVD. That's daring.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Thursday, 27 April 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't a big fan of his music, but I'm going to rent that Thor DVD; it seems like it would be pretty interesting.

I bought the Warlord DVD that's got their old video on it. The earlier album was better than that footage looks - I think the band really jumped the gun, releasing an ambitious video showcasing a half-developed stage act before finding a singer that worked. If I remember properly, that vocalist only lasted for the one video. If it had been an album instead, they might have spent time getting vocal takes where he hits more of the notes and we'd be spared the sight of all that tortured mugging, but there you go. The album is pretty good - kind of atmospheric, progressive soft-metal. I think their songs were developing a bit more at the time of that video, but I don't believe they did a follow-up until much later. There are a couple of intermediate albums by the guitarist under the name Lordian Guard that I read somewhere used a drum machine - I wouldn't mind hearing those.

I saw that Captain Beyond footage - it's great to see them, but it needs more cowbell.

but I'm going to rent that Thor DVD

It's a good rental. It's self-deprecating and funny. Remember to turn off the comments at the beginning or you get a voice over from Thor and the producer that goes on way too long. The various reels speak for themselves. Canadian TV apparently did a good short news doc on him early after his major label deal and it is so quintessentially clubby and polyester glam rock. There are skits from a Brit sitcom and a segment from a Jersey-local bizarre comedy half-hour. And as much of his music as necessary.

George 'the Animal' Steele, Thursday, 27 April 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, George. I checked and they've got it at a place close to where I live. I never get around to renting movies anymore, I have to make an exception here. Watching a clip like that is like finding a trap door in my family's old house that I walked by a thousand times when I was a kid and never noticed.

It was good to see that Rock Goddess video. I never gave them a chance at the time because of their name, but it looks like I probably made a mistake. She's got an interesting voice.

After watching almost all of these videos I have decided that it is not a good guitarist that makes a good metal band it is singularly about the fucking drummer. Better the drummer, better the metal band.

The video. I was halfway through before I realized that this *wasn't* an official (but unreleased) vid. This is another one of those homemade masterpieces that you seem to stumble across every other week on youtube, Google video and the like. As good as anything GNR allowed on MTV from '88-'92.

Back when The Obsessed got signed to Sony the label produced a documentary to help introduce the masses to the historical value and peer respect Wino's crew had. It features the likes of Henry Rollins, Ian MacKaye and other DC luminaries as well as later recruits such as Lee Dorian and Pepper from COC. I love this video and wish that someone would issue it for public consumption - as far as I know it never appeared on anything commercially available and it only appeared on a VJS tape that was given out for promotional use. And now, it's on YouTube in two segments:
