Can't find a C/D thread on Sunn o))) so lets have one.

I say CLASSIC!

My favourite has always been Flight Of The Behemoth, but the new album Black One is great. Theres also a ltd 2cd version with a live gig from Denmark featuring Oren Ambarchi and others.

So what do you think?

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Sunday, 30 October 2005 23:11 (7 years ago) Permalink

Best ambient music I've heard in a while. It is not heavy metal.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 30 October 2005 23:13 (7 years ago) Permalink

It's dronetastic!

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Sunday, 30 October 2005 23:15 (7 years ago) Permalink

Other bands play, Manowar KILL!

"The whole purpose of playing live is to blow people's heads off," says Manowar bassist Joey DeMaio . "That's what we do; that's the energy of this band. We're out there to kick ass. We're out there to turn our gear on and blast. We're out there to kill. That's what metal is. Anybody who says otherwise is not playing heavy metal. We will melt your face!"

gear (gear), Sunday, 30 October 2005 23:17 (7 years ago) Permalink

Exactly! It is metal!

My favourite (from what I've heard) is White 2 -- it's got heavy drone, snarling black metal-ish vocals, the works.

I haven't heard the new one yet.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 30 October 2005 23:22 (7 years ago) Permalink

Might as well include Khanate here too.

The new album is brutal.

classic
i was listening to white 2 last night and it made me feel more high
i heard that on the new one there are vocals that were recorded from inside of a coffin

buyabiznatch (buyabiznatch), Monday, 31 October 2005 01:17 (7 years ago) Permalink

That is a nice touch. It is not really metal without a modicum of theatrical cheese.

The two White discs veered dangerously close to hippie crap-dom. The new one's great, though.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 31 October 2005 03:34 (7 years ago) Permalink

00 Void is the most true to the drone, so i'm prone to that one.

The new one is too fast!

i only need one sunn disc, apparently: flight of the behemoth. but if i see one of their other ones for $2 i'd pick it up. maybe.

It's all about the Grimmrobe Demos for me. (White2 and Flight are cool too. Haven't heard the new one, but I like my Sunn o))) without vocals.)

>What do you think of Khanate?

Khanate get better with each release. I never listen to the debut, but Things Viral was brilliantly death-marchy, and the new one sort of combines the styles of the two prior releases into their best effort to date. The first track is seriously terrifying; I might play it to scare off trick-or-treaters tonight.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 31 October 2005 13:14 (7 years ago) Permalink

Khanate are good, but I can only listen to like... one Khanate song at a time.

Eeek, I disagree. Last time I saw Khanate I went outside for the second half of their set. The first time I saw 'em was okay cuz their equipment failed after 1.5 jams and so it wasn't overkill.

Sunn o))) = i'm still trying to figure out how i feel about them...i've listened to their records a bit and live at ArthurFest it was pretty cool, but maybe a bit to overly theatrical...i found myself laughing a bit too much...and I just sort of got the feeling that louder wasn't better....especially following Earth...Earth brought the drone so much more furiously with zero theatrics, less volume, and equally minimal (albeit Morricone-ish) riffing...
(also: sunn o))) wrecklessly pushing over the giant PA speakers when the fuses kept blowing and cut off their sound didn't really feel that metal...it reminded me of a junior high nirvana cover band playing a backyard birthday party, blowing their peavey amp, and throwing it in a nearby swimming pool...wah wah wah wah ...had they actually done the act on purpose in the middle of their set and killed 30 of the people sitting on the floor in front of the speakers...yes: that would be metal...) for my drone metal dollar, The Corrupted live in the fall of '97 at a weird bar in Savannah, Georgia was the best I have experienced in a live setting...it wasn't about volume, it wasn't about metal, it wasn't about theatrics, and it wasn't about riffs...it was about pure unrelenting brutality...i think they played for close to two hours....killer....

Khanate = I've only heard the new record, and I like it a lot....reminds me of The Necks if they played drone metal...I definitely want to track down the earlier stuff...to anyone who has them...is it all worth getting?

btw, pdf....khanate will make those trick or treaters piss their pants...go for it!

>I'm interested in how Sunn O))) are theatric live. I just figured it would be a few guys in robes shoe-gazing.

More amp-gazing than shoe-gazing; the time I saw them at Tonic (being gently sprinkled with dust shaken loose from the rafters the whole time), they spent the whole set facing their amps, never once turning around to look at the audience. That night there were four of them - two guitarists and a bassist, and one person on keyboards which were laid flat on the stage, so he/she was hunched on knees and elbows to play. (Still not looking at the crowd.)

is it alright to write an article explaining Sunn0))) to those unfamiliar with their music and not mention these two albums ?

even though the band sights earth and melvins as their biggest influences this guy wants to make it seem like Sunn0)))'s music comes from nowhere - just these two crazy metal guys.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/28/magazine/28artmetal.html

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Sunday, 28 May 2006 14:47 (7 years ago) Permalink

Surely you jest. Far from suggesting that their music comes from nowhere, one of the main themes of the article is how experimental metal draws from a well of influences that is probably surprising and intriguing to people who only know "heavy metal" as a caricature -- Stevie Wonder, bebop, Ethipian blues, Reich, Glass, etc. etc. etc. all get praised and cited.

erklie (erklie), Sunday, 28 May 2006 15:42 (7 years ago) Permalink

those artists may get praised and sighted but there's no direct musical link made. guy's definitely determined to make Sunn0))) into some iconoclastic musical visionaries rather than a band that plays music that sounds pretty much exactly like two albums that joe preston played on 15 years ago.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:07 (7 years ago) Permalink

The NY TImes magazine certainly can't be accused of picking obvious bands to spotlight in large features. First Broken Social Scene, now Sunn0))) and Boris. Surely a Sunset Rubdown cover story can't be far behind.

However, Sunno)) are pretty non-functional music, and I doubt a New York Times article will result in dramatic changes to them or their fan base... they make unpleasant, at times awesome, at other times ridiculous (in a good way) bass and tritone heavy noise. I imagine they might be used at Guantanamo as sonic weapons... However, they are undeniably a good story....

Agree w/ Gekkopel, above. Sunn0))) are both awesome and ludicrous in approximately equal measure. Conceptually brilliant, often hilarious, wonderfully packaged, tons of fun to write/think about, and guaranteed to appeal to almost no-one.

I like the music itself, but only occasionally, and my affection for the band depends greatly on their nonmusical appeal (production of collectible objects, think value, weirdness factor, etc.).

Black One is the best thing they've ever done, closely followed by the White albums and Flight of the Behemoth. Didn't like 'em so much when they were following more closely in Earth's footsteps. Earth just did the dreamlike magma-metal thing a million times better.

P.S. Haven't we passed the pull-date on their novelty value? Where does the line for the backlash start?

New album details/promo hash:

SUNN O))) is proud to present their 7th studio album, after 10 years of existence, entitled Monoliths & Dimensions. The album showcases the core guitar duo - Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson - incorporating influences from a plethora of guest musicians, bringing the SUNN O))) sound to epic new levels. The band also collaborated with composer Eyvind Kang (notable for his work with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, etc.) on various acoustic ensembles, in addition to the Helios fueled electric guitars and basses. Key players on the album include Australian guitar genius Oren Ambarchi, enigmatic Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Tormentor, etc.) and slow music godfather Dylan Carlson (Earth), as well as Julian Priester (worked with Sun Ra in the 50s, John Coltrane’s African Brass band, and Herbie Hancock’s Sextant band) and new-music horn player Stuart Dempster. There’s also an upright bass trio, French & English horns, harp & flute duo, piano, brass, reed & strings ensembles, and a Viennese woman’s choir led by Persian vocal savant Jessika Kenney.

The album is not "SUNN O))) with strings" or "metal meets orchestra" material. The band took an approach concentrating on more of allusion toward the timbre of feedback and the instruments involved, so the piece is really illusory, beautiful and not entirely linear, stating that the end product is "the most musical piece we’ve done, and also the heaviest, powerful and most abstract set of chords we've laid to tape" The album was recorded and mixed by Randall Dunn & Mell Dettmer at various points over the last 2 years, and will be released late May 2008. Monoliths & Dimensions is practice in density, gravity and momentum.

Monoliths & Dimensions track listing:
Aghartha (17:34)
Big Church [megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért] (09:43)
Hunting & Gathering (Cydonia) (10:02)
Alice (16:21)

MAXIMUM VOLUME YIELDS MAXIMUM RESULTS.

just ribbin ya -- i actually don't have much interaction with the whole weird collector scum culture, so it doesn't bug me all that much. I've never met anyone who's super-into all that ltd. edition psych/folk/metal/aquarius records fetishism thang -- though they must exist, right? Are they like 78 collectors?

Actually one of the cds had a bonus live disc that wasnt going to be on vinyl so i bought that. But that' not what youre talking about. I havent bought anything off ebay apart from the vinyl of white 2 which i didnt have and i only paid £20 for it anyway(sells for way over that now)

I have all their vinyl up through White 2 except for Flight of the Behemoth. One of them has a big unbroken wax seal on it.

Is this stuff worth anything? The band gave me copies of everything they put out up to that point... Nice guys!

I'll have to go look. Could be on Hydrahead... I don't remember there being any info on the outside and I never wanted to break the seal because I already had the original cd with the little printed on plastic sleeve...

I mean I knew they were valuable but not $200+ valuable. Stoked!

Just read the WIRE feature - it's top notch.

This SunnO))) album is fucking great as well. It puts paid to that myth that only record collectors buy them. I mean it's not full of humalong songs like 'Learning To Fly' by The Bluetones but what is?

Doran, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 21:28 (4 years ago) Permalink

Which album? Domkirke?

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 21:30 (4 years ago) Permalink

No 'Monoliths & Dimensions'.

I shouldn't say this, like I'm sat here with a copy of it. I went to a playback at Southern in London a few days ago.

I mention this because the playback shredded one of the bass cones!

When Atilla's vocals first came in I nearly voided.

Or should that be 00Voided?

Doran, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 21:34 (4 years ago) Permalink

Hot Topic is a shitty store catering to overweight mall-punks as mentioned, BUT they are also the only place near me that regularly stocks Relapse releases. So my hand is forced to occasionally duck in, as when they had the Tombs and Obscura albums for $10.99. I may have to swing by to see if they actually have Domkirke tonight.

legendary North American forest ape (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 21:46 (4 years ago) Permalink

I'm writing a big piece on them for Signal to Noise and will be hearing the album on 4/3. Consequently I've been listening to a shitload of the older stuff recently. Some of the live albums don't do much for me, but Oracle is rising higher and higher in my estimation. It deserved better than a super-limited-edition release.

unperson, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 21:46 (4 years ago) Permalink

There's no record stores in my town now, but even when there was I doubt they would have stocked relapse or southern lord stuff, so i'd welcome a hot topic style shop here as its better than nothing. Only supermarkets sell (top 40) cd's here.

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 21:57 (4 years ago) Permalink

Well, Hot Topic is weird, the one by me has a tiny, tiny CD/vinyl section. 98% of it is your typical emo/mallpunk stuff (AFI, All Time Low, etc), but they carry some decent metal there on a very limited basis. I've picked up Emperor, Immortal, old Cannibal Corpse stuff there before. The Domkirke thing is weird because I've never seen Southern Lord stuff there before.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 22:07 (4 years ago) Permalink

And Phil OTM, I think Oracle is one of my favorite things they've ever done, but the new one sounds pretty damn promising.

legendary North American forest ape (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 22:09 (4 years ago) Permalink

The Hot Topic promo is perversely cool. I hope they use any profits to finance more deluxe reissues of impossibly kvlt rarities.

I'm afraid Oracle is actually the only Sunn project I've hear that I really don't like. Black One, on the other hand, opened the door to a whole new world of music, and totally changed my listening habits. (First Striborg long player all day today, plus the new Menace Ruine)
