Hurrah!?

Recently I came upon a band called Hurrah! who were, apparently, something "big" in the late '80s, inspired Sarah Records, and according to allmusic wore black leather and sunglasses a lot. After looking at their fan-site I can safely say the latter is ridiculous, but the question in my mind remains: were they any good? I can't seem to find anything by them via legal channels or even soulseek; are they worth pursuing? All I know is, the lyric "Look so weak and feel so strong" is gold.

Get one search.

Some talk here : great expectations dashed

A passing mention there : Prefab Sprout: Classic Or Dud

They WERE good, sadly the perfect example of 'better live than on recd', but recds is all we have. (There is a live recd, but you can't find it anywhere.) Look for the compilation, now deleted, which came out on Rev-Ola, called The Sound of Philadelphia. It has the early singles, sessions and some better takes of the later, too-glossy major-label stuff. There's also a nice 8-track mini-LP of the first 4 singles on Kitchenware, called 'Boxed'. Vinyl-only, of course. Not impossible to find.

I saw them live and they were rubbish. They looked up at the ceiling in an impassioned manner mid-song. I think this must have been in the glossy period though, although I don't think people suddenly start looking up at the ceiling.

Felt *supported* them.

They were still good live in the glossy period.

Did they look up at the ceiling, or has my mind superimposed that from a Mighty Lemon Drops gig?

Obviously it cannot be ruled out that they once or twice looked up at the ceiling, but I never saw them do it.

It is a shame Tim H is not here. I am sure he has been exposed to my lokking up at the ceiling theory of rock.

eight years pass...

i saw this much hyped band live in the late 80s.
they supported the pre drum machine version of pop will eat itself (who said grrrrrr a lot).
despite the ilm groove, hurrah! never looked at the ceiling.
however, they were truly, truly brilliant.
a secret i have long held onto.
basically, hurrah!, were the last guitar band i loved before i woke up to the joys of golden era hip hop/acid house.
but, that does discount the fact that in 2014 their music sounds f*cking timeless?
no.

I used to have "The Sound Of Philadelphia" compilation but it didn't do much for me aside from a few tracks. It's on Spotify, I'll revisit it.

I like Boxed a lot, I think there is is also some really good song on there that didn't make on Sound Of Philadelphia . I don't really like their other stuff. It became really over produced. I remember I bought some single in the 90's/early 2000 by one of them called Bronze on the Bus Stop label or something, it still seemed over done, over the top. They seemed to spend a lot of time on their album covers and ended up looking like Fonzie on a lot of them.

It became really over produced.

you see .. i really love the massive production that the band succumbed to.
it's a timestamp as to how guitar bands were treated at the time to the power of xxxx
of course the debut album had the depth of history and so is all time classic for me.
that said, i have ordered the follow up album, but i have a low expectation of it ..

(but i am still very excited to actually hear it !)
