Curiosity Redux Thread

Thought is best to start an individual thread, as the Reissues thread is way long and should be kept on that topic really.

So, a quick update and a couple of wee questions.

So far...

Meathook - Marquee 79
AM/In Your House (early) - Birmingham 79
10:15 Sat Night - Paris 80
Another Day - Stockholm 80
Primary (yellow) - Rennes 80
I'm Cold - Rennes 80
Do You Wanna Touch? - Rennes 80 or unspecified 85
Fire In Cairo - Werchter 81
The Holy Hour - Werchter 81
Charlotte Sometimes (early version) - Sydney 81
Forever - Sydney 81
A Short Term Effect - Paris 82 or Glasgow 82
Pornography - Paris 82
Lament - Elephant Fayre 83
Bananafishbones - s'Hertogenbosch 84
Bird Mad Girl - s'Hertogenbosch 84
Secrets - Washington 84
Happy The Man - Washington 84
Caterpillar - Washington 84
Wailing Wall - Washington 84
The Hanging Garden - Ludwigshafen 85
Screw - Ludwigshafen 85
The Baby Screams - Camden Palace 85
A Night Like This - Camden Palace 85 or Glastonbury 86
Push - Glastonbury 86
The Blood - Houston 86
Torture - Birmingham 87
A Japanese Dream - Birmingham 87
Snakepit - Birmingham 87

This is where I'm up to in the mastering, should take me another week or so to do 87-04, I've been really geeked out on Cure, but it's enjoyable.

So, any more KM-KM-KM era? Catch/Like Cockatoos/If Tonight.../Why Can't I Be You/Hot Hot Hot/Just Like Heaven??

I've been leaning heavily on The Top era and Head On The Door mainly because these aren't really represented much in the live albums (plus they sound so great, The Blood for instance is just fantastic) which means I'm not too sure which Disintegration and Wish tracks to go for because these are featured heavily on Show/Entreat obv.

Also, I was planning to crossfade the tracks to make it sound almost seamless like any live album, anyone have a reason not to do this, apart from I-Pod grumbles?

It's going to be 4 CD's I think, a box set, Yo!

Any suggestions welcome.

Er...keep doing what you're doing as I trust your judgment? :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 May 2005 01:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm rather excited about this.

Any news mzui?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Indeed, I'll have the finished tracklist done for the weekend or early next week, and once I do (a kind hearted ILX'r) will be getting the artwork together and I'll get it printed up and then we will be good to go.

Found a CD of a drunken Cure around a hotel piano playing silly versions of some songs but the quality is a bit meh, I might put one track in somewhere as a hidden bonus.

M.

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Argh, I had such high hopes of getting a finished tracklist up on ILM before I go on holiday.

Ah well then, apologies all round, I'll be back at work in 10 days or so then I promise I'll put a lid on this soon after.

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:29 (nineteen years ago) link

you are still a golden god!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes yes! :-) I await happily, including the drunk performance or even a bit of one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:39 (nineteen years ago) link

You are so awesome.

two weeks pass...
Righty-Ho,

This week is hopefully when I finally finish the masters.

I'm nearly done with the tracklist, been waiting for a few upgrades of certain shows which I've managed to get and am really happy with the quality, only the first 26 mins of CD1 is sourced from my tapes and even though it's bootleg quality, I guarantee it's never as bad as Heroin Face!

So, as a taster here is the final, final track list for CD1.

1. Meathook - London 79
2. A.M./In Your House (early version) - Birmingham 79
3. 10:15 Sat Night - Paris 80
4. Another Day - Stockholm 80
5. Primary (yellow/cold colours version) - Rennes 80
6. I'm Cold - Rennes 80
7. Plastic Passion - Amsterdam 80
8. Jumping Someone Else's/Another Journey By Train - Amsterdam 80
9. Fire In Cairo - Werchter 81
10. The Holy Hour - Sydney 81
11. Charlotte Sometimes (early version) - Sydney 81
12. Forever - Sydney 81
13. A Short Term Effect - Paris 82
14. Cold - Paris 82
15. Pornography - Paris 82
16. Lament - Elephant Fayre 83
17. Bananafishbones - s'Hertogenbosch 84
18. Bird Mad Girl - s'Hertogenbosch 84

This just looks ridiculously good already. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 June 2005 18:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Indeed! it's going to be very cool, CD2 will be done tomorrow.

mzui (mzui), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:25 (eighteen years ago) link

I really enjoy that whole Washington 84 show. Don't know where I got it, but I am always pleased when it comes up in the shuffle.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Holy shit. You are the greatest human being on the planet.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:29 (eighteen years ago) link

It's a great gig alright, the 84 Cure lineup is aces, Vince Ely and Andy Anderson are very underrated.

mzui (mzui), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:34 (eighteen years ago) link

how did i miss this before???

it looks absolutely awesome.

how do i get me one? goddamn.

ummm, how are you on "the kiss" tour? I've barely heard any kmkmkm stuff live, but i bet a load of it is phenomenal, especially when amped up in arena/stadium venues.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:41 (eighteen years ago) link

That reminds me, I am still looking for a sponsor I think to burn me a set after the initial dispersal to the lucky (I think that is how it was going to work). I'll obv reimburse shipping and whatnot. Just shoot me an email if you are one of the lucky early getters. Thx.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Monday, 20 June 2005 19:44 (eighteen years ago) link

At the moment there are 4 tracks from KMKMKM lined up:

Fight
Torture
A Japanese Dream
Snakepit

I have been thinking about putting more in, 'Like Cockatoos' or 'If Tonight...' fr'instance.

mzui (mzui), Monday, 20 June 2005 20:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Put me on for a copy of these, too, please! They look fantastic!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 20 June 2005 22:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Oooh, if you've got a nice version of "Like Cockatoos"...!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 June 2005 22:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Heheheh. Wouldn't it be nice.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 June 2005 22:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh yes! And another tiny fist in the air in favor of Cuckatoos. It could maybe replace Fight? but, hey, it's yr party...

Maybe we can set up relays for further copies? I'll gladly take care of EU folks.

Die Emanzipation von Baaderonixx (redukt) (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 06:43 (eighteen years ago) link

4. Caterpillar - Washington 84
5. The Hanging Garden - Ludwigshafen 85
6. Screw - Ludwigshafen 85

13. Torture - Birmingham 87
14. A Japanese Dream - Birmingham 87
15. Like Cockatoos - Santa Barbara 87

17. The Perfect Girl - Santa Barbara 87
18. Why Can't I Be You? - Santa Barbara 87
19. It's Not You (acoustic) - Bordeaux 89

I ditched Snakepit cause it's really quite a dull (and long) song live, so apologies to any Snakepit fans.

The Glasto 86 tracks are something else, very atmospheric and the
version of The Hanging Garden is awesomely tribal, can't wait for
you all to hear them.

Next is the Disintegration/Wish era which as we all know is quite well represented by live albums, any thoughts welcome as always.

Disc 3 up next week, after Glasto.

I ditched Snakepit cause it's really quite a dull (and long) song live, so apologies to any Snakepit fans.

That aside, ay-yi-yi this looks astoundingly great.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:43 (eighteen years ago) link

YAY COCKATOOS

for 89-92 stuff just try and pick versions that are the least similar to the released live versions? interesting variations or jams or tags or fuckups?

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Wow!! These look great!! How do I get one?

Pete Baumann, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Pete, they are initially being sent out to 14 or so (I forget) people who dibbed them a while ago, a few kind souls are willing to send them on.
Stay tuned, I still have to pester Josh for artwork and get the printing happening so it'll be a little while yet before posting.

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I still want in on this via any means. One of the lucky 14 can email me and let me know anything I need to do. This looks amazing.

slightly off-topic, but has anyone managed a successful bootleg of "The Blood" and Justin Timberlake's "Like I Love You"?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 19 August 2005 06:20 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm psyched to see that they're playing Primary again. Never worked with a 5-piece IMHO, so I'm intrigued to hear how it sounds now.

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 August 2005 06:41 (eighteen years ago) link

"The Baby Screams"!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That totally makes up for yet another round of "Push"!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, let's have that one on the set.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:51 (eighteen years ago) link

And "At Night" too!

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:01 (eighteen years ago) link

"At Night" is so ridiculously brilliant.

Actually, what would be totally brilliant would be a ten-minute long version of "Lost" that flowed into a ten-minute long version of "The Kiss".

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:03 (eighteen years ago) link

1. Onimo

I've avoided too much Disintegration/Wish material here, you all have Entreat and Show right? But are we fans of Wrong Number? I've missed off Club America, Mint Car, The 13th could this be a mistake, opinions needed thx.

mzui (mzui), Sunday, 21 August 2005 14:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Hmmmm, nice and thank you. Leaving off "Mint Car" was VERY VERY wise. And "Wrong Number" will be cool to hear live -- I admit I would love to hear a live "The 13th."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 August 2005 03:31 (eighteen years ago) link

yes a live 13th is ESSENTIAL! a live Club America would be good if there's a particularly great version, but don't go sacrificing Harold & Joe or Wendy Time y'know? and I hope we are all fans of Wrong Number, yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 September 2005 14:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Info posted on Chain of Flowers that a fellow who interviewed the band in Spain passed on:

- New album next april 2006 with a new Cure World Tour.

- The album will be produced by Robert himself !! Robert told us that Ross Robinson is a great man and he will be involved in the making of the new album but not as a Producer.

- Robert told us that the new album will have keyboards !! Robert and Porl will play them and at the moment they are not thinking about a new cure member.

- Robert is in contact with Severin and maybe he is going to do a collaboration in the new album but not like a new Cure member.

- Robert is really happy with this new line-up. He thinks it was important to take a "new direction" now.

- About Roger : Robert told us that he is a great musician but maybe he wasn't a part of "The Cure soul" . . . they had differences in the way of working and about the future of The Cure so . . . it was better to continue with this new line up.

(after listening to Robert 's words we could suppose that Robert thinks that Roger is an excellent musician but maybe they are people with great "differences" and minds . . .)

- About Perry : This is different beceause : Robert told us that He and Porl had a drink with Perry in an English pub one week before Benicassim and they still have a great relationship. Robert told us that Perry admires Porl as one of the best guitar players in Great Britain.

After listening to Robert's words we thought that maybe Robert and Porl had been thinking about " Porl's comeback" for a long time . . . we saw that
Porl and Robert are more like band members. They were together all night long ( Jason and Simon were in the backstage area), so we understood that Porl has been always a Cure member even when he left the band. Porl told us that he is always in contact with Robert ... so when Robert is recording a new song or just thinking about the future of The Cure . . . Porl supports Robert. For example : Robert told us that they played " Signal To Noise" because Porl wanted to play this song !! so we tought that it's easy to believe that when Robert was thinking about this song (in 2001),
maybe Porl was helping him.

For this reason we all ( Hispacure members ) thought after the meeting that . . . maybe Robert and Porl have been thinking about Porl's comeback for a long time. "The official news" were that Roger and Perry left the band and after Porl would returnto The Cure . . .

But we think that Robert was unhappy with The Cure line up for different reasons.

Roger : they had different opinions . . .

Perry : maybe Robert wanted Porl in the band again and it was better that Perry left. We think that Perry had been the first guitar during more than a decade ... and if Porl returned it'd become a difficult situation for Perry (even if Perry admires Porl). He would have been a second guitar ... and this is really difficult to accept or understand.

- so Robert told us that he is now really happy with the new line up : full of energy . . .

We also spoke about football !! spanish football : Real Madrid and Valencia !! and he told us that he is still a Queen's Park Rangers' supporter.

Robert is really happy with this new line-up. He thinks it was important to take a "new direction" now.

I love how they trot out this line as if it's a fresh concept and the Cure's lineup *doesn't* change every ten minutes.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 8 September 2005 14:56 (eighteen years ago) link

ooh, I'd be willing to make copies of this to send out to others if someone can send a copy to me... damn this looks like some fine work!

and dump Jason for Boris!

PLEAAAASE!

I love how they trot out this line as if it's a fresh concept and the Cure's lineup *doesn't* change every ten minutes.

The previous line-up had been solid for almost ten years, that's longer than most bands' entire careers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 00:54 (eighteen years ago) link

But that quibble aside -- mzui, you are a genius man and a half. This has all been worth the wait and I thank ya greatly. :-)

I will happily volunteer to help burn copies for folks here in the States, but to avoid doing it forever I'll limit it to the first five folks who respond *and* who are willing to post here saying they'll burn copies for five more, etc. Write me at my e-mail below and be prepared to send five CDRs -- I have no DVD burning capability at present, regrettably, so that will have to be set aside in this tree.

Ned I would love a copy as well. We are practically neighbors and I have a brand new computer with all the bells and whistles (CD/DVD burner with LightScribe technology). i can take postal expenses on myself, just in case..

nique (nique), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 23:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Been watching some of the DVD just now -- I really honestly love how, far from being a distraction, the age of the source tapes and the cloudier images actually make everything seem frighteningly up to date! Bands out there now are spending all this mean just to look that way as with the TOTP clip of "Primary" and all that -- all the visual glitches look incredibly intentional!

Also really nice to see the visuals that go with the "Fuck Robert Palmer!" take of "A Forest" (the Rock Werther 1981 version) and a six song set from the 1984 era band, just to see Andy Anderson on drums (as well as the bizarro bop 'yeah I'm getting into it!' take on bass courtesy of Mr. Thornalley).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 February 2006 03:27 (eighteen years ago) link

We will work this out! Ned and I will get together soon to make copies. So if you are in the States and want a copy (only audio, only DVD or both) post in this thread so we can see how many we need to burn and all that. If you want to get a hold of us by e-mail instead both are valid.

BeeOK (boo radley), Thursday, 9 February 2006 11:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Here is a link for the artwork, this will have the two typos that Ned pointed out, unless Josh fancies rejigging the two pages, this is how they stand folks.

kephm (kephm), Friday, 10 February 2006 01:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Just another 'liner note' correction, but this time on the DVD -- the final track on the AlabamaHalle 1984 set is "Wailing Wall," not "Pornograpy."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 01:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Er, "Pornography." You get the idea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 01:29 (eighteen years ago) link

No, never mind, let me correct that again! The running of the end credits from the original show confused my brain -- "Wailing Wall" is immediately followed by "Pornography." Bonus cut!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 01:30 (eighteen years ago) link

...and the version of "A Forest" listed at the end of the Old Grey Whistle Test set is from another appearance when Thornalley and Anderson were still in the band, but isn't from the AlabamaHalle show.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 02:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Whoops -- I'll update the artwork tomorrow and post a new YSI link. If anyone notices any other errors, please post them.

If you want to get in on the action let us know. I'm going to help burn the DVD for a quite a few ILMers next week, along with the audio. Ned may have a few slots left and I haven't put a cap on how many I will do as of yet. If the demand is too great and starts to cost too much money than I will rethink that but right now is the time to let us know if you are interested in a copy of this collection.

BeeOK (boo radley), Saturday, 11 February 2006 09:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Sorry everyone, something major has come up. So I'm not going to be able to get to this for about another week...again sorry but real life is a bitch right now.

It's also not too late for those who have missed this thead but the door is closing. E-mail me if interested...

kit brash (kit brash), Sunday, 26 February 2006 18:41 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd like to get involved with this. Is it strictly a "hard copy" thing, or would it be possible for the discs to be ripped and then distributed as files via YSI? Or is that going against the spirit of the project?

cdwill (cdwill), Sunday, 26 February 2006 21:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Hard copy is simply the most practical given the file sizes on the four main discs themselves -- that said, presumably if someone wanted to make a torrent using FLAC or a similar standard, then it could circulate that way. Don't know how useful that would be for the DVD, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 February 2006 21:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd be willing to create a torrent of these in FLAC, but the source files would have to be .wav files, or else encoding to lossless would be pointless (and not truly lossless)- I'm not sure what the source(s) of these tracks are, format-wise.

The DVD would have to travel separately from the audio tracks on most or all torrent sites, but I guess they could be cross-referenced or something.

cdwill (cdwill), Sunday, 26 February 2006 21:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah, you need to read the thread over, my friend. ;-) mzui was very specific about getting these directly from non-mp3 sources -- there is the bonus mp3 disc, but that was initially separate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 February 2006 21:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I wasn't clear: I saw that he's recording from master recordings, but if the discs themselves weren't .wav files burned to disc (but instead were .wav --> .mp3 --> burned to disc), they couldn't be ripped from disc and encoded to FLAC and be truly lossless.

cdwill (cdwill), Sunday, 26 February 2006 21:36 (eighteen years ago) link

*blink* Okay, call me hopelessly naive perhaps, but surely the context of all his posts was to indicate that he was finding those master recordings to burn WAV/AIFF files to disc rather than burning mp3s reconverted to audio files.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 February 2006 21:40 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd assume so, but I didn't see anything specifically mentioned about it.

cdwill (cdwill), Sunday, 26 February 2006 21:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Guess what I have in my hot little hands. So anyone waiting for Ned (because I’m burning the DVD’s for him) or myself, the wait is almost over. So if everything goes as planned I will be burning all weekend and get these out on Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for being patient but it’s almost time.

BTW, the DVD kicks ass, we really need a part two to that because it’s so great and also really only goes through The Top era with only a couple of songs past that point.

Regardless BIG props to Mzui for this amazing collection! Thanks also to ILM for contributing the songs to this collection as it’s something special.

And did anyone notice the guy playing bass in the Munich '84 concert isn't Phil Thornalley. It's some guy named Norman Fisher Jones. Who he? Love his Mick Karn'ish head bopping, as Ned noted above.

Yes, but it would be nice if Ned and Bee could have held off on making copies for non-contributing people until the original list had gotten theirs.

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 18 March 2006 02:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I can understand your frustration. Things came up all the time so it still took about a month for me to get anything done anyways. I felt bad to these people that I promised because it took that long.

If there is anything I can do to help get this out to people e-mail me at the address below so we can work out something, if there is still a problem.

remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 00:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Yez welcome. (I should note that if I knew the angst this was all going to cause I would have refrained from burning for other folk for a bit! I'd volunteer to get them to those still in need but since I've no DVD burner Bee and Onimo are probably better candidates in the end.)

Yeah, the DVDs were sent out along with burned sets to folks hither and yon, so I know it should be easily circulating...I have stumbled across an extra DVD just now, and so I'd be willing to burn off one more copy of the full set to go with that. Otherwise this is all best handled by people who can burn both CDs and DVDs.
