I have heard rumours that it will be getting a release soon.
As far as I know it was a collaboration between Earl Brutus, some stll alive chap from Lush and an ex Mary chain guitarist...It's supposedly very good indeed.

i suspect that this is the white label that was listed on the mojo listening panel a couple of years ago.
i have a FOF of someone in the band and pushed and pushed to get him to give me the lowdown .. as well as hassling loads of other folks to get acess to the fellas.
all of which - came to nothing.
there was also a small NME advert for t-shirts .. which had a typically Earl Brutus slogan on it ..
superb band. off to dig out the albums and revel in their majestic noise.

too fucking right. they soundtracked my life for about eight months in the mid-to-late nineties, and i love them for it. i saw them live at least three times ... first time was at the venue in edinburgh, which they completely emptied. there were two of us left standing (admittedly, my mate was so drunk he didn't know where he was), and even i slunk off before they'd finished, so absolutely headfucked was i by how gloriously different they were.
last time was at the cathouse in glasgow. they rocked so hard i thought the world had fallen off its axis.
(and "gypsy camp battle" is still one of the most chillingly brilliant songs i've ever heard.)

"Earl Brutus Your Majesty We Are Here (1996) Though it was released at the height of Britpop, this debut from Earl Brutus had more in common with conceptual Britart. The music provided glam-rock thunder, the personnel provided glamour - two guys at the front, just drinking - and the lyrics gave the enterprise a surprising lightness of touch. "

OK, right, I wasn't going to talk about this until it was officially announced but it seems to have leaked out. Nick died on Sunday night. He was drummer with Clock DVA, Gun Club, World of Twist, Jesus and Mary Chain, Freeheat (not a bad CV) and, of course, singer and frontman with Earl Brutus. More importantly, he was a wonderful man, a total one-off and a real mensch. So long Nick, hope to see you next time around.

I had no idea really who this guy was until I read his obit here in the Independent. Didn't realise there was a connection between EB and Clock DVA - what a great band they were. Tom, I'm sorry to hear you lost a pal.
This is a delightful story that LJ will like:
Sanderson's interests were broad, including ornithology, Manchester United and British history. I remember him describing a birdwatching trip to see some hawfinches in Norfolk. He didn't find the birds, instead ending up drunk in the dark and falling down some coastal bluffs. His clothes torn, his face scratched, he knocked on the door of some remote cottage. Surprisingly perhaps, the stranger who answered let Sanderson in. The pair then spent the rest of the night in high-spirited revelry.
Hope he got to see the hawfinches in the end, God knows I've tried and those are some bad bitches to nail down.

yeah. i listened to both albums for a few days solidly after i heard, and cant deny i was a very depressing experience given that i had always hoped that they would reform and i'd be in the front row with a great big mutha'fuggin' grin. but sadly this will never be the case now. a blindingly fucking good band indeed.

One of the most refreshing live bands I've ever seen. Did I howl? I always had the biggest shit eating grin. Genuinely fucking crazy on stage were the Brutus - 'old enough to know better' made them more rewarding
Bar 'Navyhead' which was usually blasted only when well oiled, I didn't really play them at home that often.
After hearing the horrible news, it dawned on me that I must have seen Earl Brutus as much as any other band.In one or two venues but in their hey day (fuck yeah) they just sort of arrived at Festivals - usually first or second on on , on the third stage. Still pissed from the night before.
― Fer Ark, Thursday, 3 July 2008 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link
Having given both a lot of listens, I'd say the two albums are very close but Tonight is the, erm, special one. Would be interested to read the obits/write-ups. As I said above, Nick seemed like one of the genuine heroes and even a wasteful young'un like myself will miss him. ;-)

Train driver in eyeliner
A tribute concert for Nick Sanderson featuring Jesus & Mary Chain, Black Box Recorder, British Sea Power & Earl Brutus DJs.
The Jesus & Mary Chain are set to headline a one-off show in commemoration of musician & railwayman Nick Sanderson who sadly passed away on June 8th of this year.
The show, to take place at The Forum in London on October 27th 2008, will also feature sets from Black Box Recorder, British Sea Power and a DJ set from Jim Fry & Gordon King of Sanderson’s final group, Earl Brutus.
Tickets for the show are priced at £20 and are available via www.kentishtownforum.com. All proceeds from the show will go to Nick’s immediate family.
Born Sheffield, South Yorkshire 22nd April 1961, Nick was a talented musician with an infectious passion for everything from Manchester United, the British rail system, British history to ornithology.
Nick started out as drummer with Sheffield post-punk group Clock DVA in the early Eighties before a stint with The Gun Club. A founding member of Manchester’s World of Twist, Nick also went on to regularly drum for Jesus & Mary Chain, for whom he played on their 1998 album Munki.
Yet it was to be Earl Brutus, the band he formed with Gordon King of World Of Twist and Jim Fry, who he knew from his Clock DVA days, which gave a voice to Nick’s acute sense of the minutiae of British culture.
The name was meant to conjure up "a pub that's quite a rough sort of place, but with a nice carvery on Sunday lunchtimes" and they marvelously continued to be at odds with all prevailing trends courtesy of a musical blend that fell somewhere between Kraftwerk and the terrace-stomp of classic glam-rock and a keen lyrical absurdity that often championed the un-celebrated while deriding the vacuous.
Having originally come from a railway family, Nick was to finally become a train driver on the London to Brighton line following the demise of Earl Brutus.

There's something really moving about the bit where he starts ranting "Who are you, you're nothing you are" the music is ridiculously good in that bit. They were dismissed as a bit of a novelty act but the tunes were always really tight. I miss them a little bit everyday.
― Kitchen Person, Thursday, 14 January 2010 22:14 (fourteen years ago) link
Just played 'On Me, Not In Me' on a jukebox in a pub in Colne.
That bit where he sings 'Take me to your harvester' and then the whole thing goes Henry the 8th crazy with the lutes and stuff...then the huge Glam riff, possibly the biggest, most monstrous, dirtiest glam riff ever, kicks in...everyone in the pub just stopped talking and listened. Admittedly there were only about 8 people there but I have NEVER seen that happen ever before
I don't even need to hear them nowadays, just the fact that their music EXISTS, makes my life better.
Just might be the best band of all time
There should be a national holiday called Nick Sanderson Day where we can spend the whole day swigging lager and smoking fags in appreciation

Yeah that was the song that really made me fall in love with them. It's one I always have ready for mix CD's.
I was so gutted when he died I never got to see them live and always thought they'd one day get together and make one more album. I remember reading they had an album planned called 20 Brutus Greats that never got finished. I always thought that just sounded like it was going to be the best album ever made.
I still play both the albums a lot. They would both easily fit into my top 100 of all time.

IMO Tonight...is a little better than Your Majesty...
I mean, they're both great (and, fuck, Tonight has Navyhead, Life's Too Long and Black Speedway on it as well as OMNIM) but Tonight is just greatness from start to finish, in my 90's top 10 and maybe all-time top 30. Staggering piece of work. At least they gave us the Larky single before sputtering out.

I agree with just about everything you said there. Tonight took me longer to get into but it sounds better as a whole album. I just started playing songs from it and found myself amazed all over again at the moment in Second Class War when that organ intro turns into that huge dirty riff. Universal Plan might be my favorite track of there's.
I'd add Don't Leave Me Behind Mate as another great track off your Majesty, the way he sings " Please Don't be impossible, Steve it's only alcohol" it's kind of beautiful.
They are one of those bands that when I listen to them I just think there's no-one better.

So many great tracks were given away on magazine freebies or hidden away on vinyl only singles or cds. Maybe a Box-set in the future?

I'm currently enjoying North Sea Bastard.

OK, here is something that can and should happen.
SOMEONE!!
1) Obtain "Mouldy old Dough" Earl Brutus/Union Jackson, the rights etcet. (unless you already own this, in which case skip this step).2) Set up a facebook campaign to launch this as an idea for Christmas 20103) release the mp3 at the same time as the X-Factor winner4) Hey presto, something entirely appropriate for christmas number one.

I have just sent an E-mail to Zoe who runs the Pigeon/Makepeace information service as, at one point, Lieutenant Pigeon were in contact with Earl Brutus with the intention of including a track of their own on the release.
I also have a couple of other leads which, hopefully, will lead to my obtaining a copy of the white label.
Watch this space.

I made myself a little playlist of those early singles. It's so great hearing new Earl Brutus songs after all this time. Highlights are the Life's Too Long remix, North Sea Bastard and Queer David. I just need those B-sides from the Tonight singles which are on their way to me.

There's something really moving about the bit where he starts ranting "Who are you, you're nothing you are"
Yes. Absolutely. That's the whole thing about this band, and why they fundamentally remain my favourite band of all time: they fire up pretty much every single emotion, many of them at the same time. Basically, they sound like a band that fucking cared. Which they were.
The version of CTMM from the NME CD is the one where he starts going on about old people and heaters or something in that middle eight, isn't it? Mark: I'm off to your blog to get it right now. I've got a copy of the CD somewhere but fuck alone knows where.
HOLY FUCKING SHIT. You absolute hero. Although the very idea of being able to get On Me, Not In Me on any kind of jukebox kind of blows my mind in the first instance.
Every single person to whom I've ever played that song has the same jaw-drop reaction to it. I remember the first time Mrs F heard it: "What the fuck was that?!"
I drove past a Harvester today, on the edge of a dismal industrial estate in Hillington. Naturally, that line popped into my head. One of the few cheery moments in that part of the day :)

I'm just getting such a heart warming feeling from reading this thread. It looks like it's going to be another night of me listening to The Brutus grinning from ear to ear. As I mentioned earlier hearing those new/old B-sides is brilliant. So far I haven't heard a song by them I didn't love.
Fuck it top 5 Brutus songs.1.Universal Plan-For the lyrics Mark quoted earlier in this thread.2.On Me Not In Me-For THAT moment!3.Don't Leave Me Behind Mate-Steve it's only alco-hol..the way he says that.4.Come Taste My Mind-For his rant.5.Life's Too Long-It seems like it takes ages for the chorus to come but when it does it's just one of those moments.
You're Majesty We Are Here, Second Class War, Black Speedway and The Sas & The Glam all deserve a mention too.

I have a live video of this from one of those NME tour concert programmes, recorded around 1997/8 which is staggering. Loads of glass smashing noises and those garage forcourt signs in evidence. Just need to find it, but I'll have a look tomorrow and get it uploaded onto Youtube.
No word from the E-mail i sent on Friday yet but I have the feelers well and truly out regarding the white label and I'm increasingly hopeful.
The Jukebox at The the pub is amazing, Grimly...pretty much the whole of The Fall's back catalogue available, in fact pretty much everything by everyone, it appears. The downside is that the first time you choose a track it has to be uploaded from The Internet which is £1 a song and in my experience, it might not still be in the hard drive the next time you check. Worth it though.
― The Broken Brothers, Saturday, 16 January 2010 23:12 (fourteen years ago) link
I remember doing exactly the same thing, I doubt I have the tape anymore though. I seem to remember they were on the same show as Travis, Spiritualized and maybe Super Furry Animals.
I used to make compilations of live performances and videos from around 95-98 taped from Top Of The Pops, TFI Fiday and especially The Chart Show. I used to love those indie charts they did where the bands were so obscure they would make they're own video clips usually using lava lamps and floating pictures of the band. Earl Brutus used to crop up quite a lot, footage of them live in darkened rooms with those signs spinning going round. When they came back with Come Taste My Mind it was like wow a proper video maybe they could make it?

Utter fucking chaos from blokes desperate to defy middle age whilst spewing contempt for the contemporary scene and everything in it.
Lucky enough to catch them a handful of times back then. A real Festival Fuck you too. Gushed about them upthread I think under another stupid moniker
A real shame about Nick Sanderson. Way too young.

The only reply I've had up to now is from the bloke who did the Traindriver In Eyeliner fanzine.
There was a copy of the white label recently in one of the Record And Tape Exchange shops in London. The chances are, I won't be able to persuade him to part with it, but at least I know it exists and I have potential leads for other copies. If it comes down to simply getting a recording, then I can get it online in no time.
A friend of mine runs a Dubstep label and although he has recently moved to Berlin from London, the potential is there to address issues with pressing and distribution is never a problem nowadays.
Obtaining the rights to press it in the first place, might however, prove to be an issue.
Let me know how you get on mark e
I have a good feeling about this.

oh man that was just tooo damn weird.
jamie fry on the phone.
some details before i forget :
- re 'mouldy old dough' : not EB, but Union Jackson who comprised of Phil King (as in Lush) and Gordon King + Nick S, with Jamie on chorus and hand claps recorded at J&MC studio : 'it was a good night'. apparently, there is a whispering campaign out there to get it out for the world cup campaign. i have some numbers to track down a copy, and find out more.
- re sas and the glam : apparently there is a campaign (via alex p @ guardian) to get this to the xmas #1 spot. jamie still has the father christmas outfit good to go for TOTP Special.
- boxset : lots of odds and sods - most owned by Island. lot of love still within the Island/Universal world, but no drive for proper boxset, but jamie believes that the EB story really does need to be told.
in the 5 minutes he was sparking ideas out re cover art for the single - a revised update of the 2 cars/suicide cover : 'tinsel on the cars'
one of the most wonderful, enjoyable surreal moments of my life.

[never been in this position before despite having wanted to do something like this for years !]as for the sound : well, the description at the thread start is spot on. yes its a demo type of recording, but clearly the lads were having a great time in the studio.

I'd suggest starting a new thread looking for advice as those with experience of record production may astonishingly be ignoring an Earl Brutus thread.
― Bing Crosby, are you listening? (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link
That was my description from years ago! I started the thread.
As I stated earlier, I have a friend who has his own label and has many years of experience in cutting what are basically bedroom recordings onto vinyl, though his set up nowadays is way more sophisticated. I've left a message for him but he's in his studio in Berlin and I haven't heard back from him yet. I'm sure he'll know all the ins and outs and I'm very hopeful he'll be able to offer his services.
The original Mouldy Old Dough was basically a living room recording and is all the better for it.
I've had a shit day, but this news has prompted me to do a little dance around my living room.

This whole thread is brilliant. Well done Mark this is amazing news!
Can't wait to hear it, If there's anything I could do to help the release of this count me in.
Also a Brutus boxset would be the dream. I always wondered if they started recording 20 Brutus greats or if it was just a title they had for the third album. Was Larky just intended as a one off single?

Thirded.
Not sure if the recording was for the album but the England Sandwich track, recorded for the Sonic Mook Experiment compilation seemed to employ a more cut-up, almost Bomb Squad style and sounded great. If any more stuff was recorded in that vein, it would be more than worthy of release.

Just spoken to my record label mate who reckons the biggest problem with getting it released in a physical format could well be the MCPS, it might mean either getting a letter from the performers autorising it to us, paying MCPS between 2 and 4 hundred pounds, or, worst case scenario, both.
The good news is that as white labels exist, there must be an acetate and almost certainly, this will be still at the pressing plant. it might be an idea to get in touch with the band again, get a catalogue number and see if they have any idea who pressed it. Of course, this could have been destroyed, the studio might have closed, etc.
If the pressing plates still exist, the cost of creating physical copies will be much lower. Even if it only ends up available as a download, the quality will be the best possible.
I'm sorry if this isn't making much sense, but I've just got off the phone to my mate and he bombarded me with information. He's promised to E-mail me tonight with a clearer list of what would be required
― The Broken Brothers, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link
re quality : it seems that there is an mp4a available that was lifted directly from DAT tape.so if this idea flies, we can go up on the 192.re pressing plant : thats going to be a long shot innit.its 10 years plus. they wont have held onto the acetates for an unreleased record will they ? re mcps : do people have to go through all that for promo-only releases ? [i think i once looked into this idea before, and just gave up with the legal/costings etc .. its a minefield !]hey ho.

Minefield indeed! I think the MCPS thing might not apply but it depends who licenced the white labels. As for the acetates, you're probably right, but any pressing on vinyl would certainly be cheaper if that already exists.
I'm a big vinyl fan, but to be honest, if it gets out and is available and it appears one person in the band at least has given their blessing, it would be a job well done.
This thread has given me so much pleasure already, even if nothing comes to pass, but I would love it if the combined efforts of a small group of fans gave others the opportunity to hear and enjoy one of the greatest and most under appreciated bands of all time.

I had a couple of the singles through the post today. The S.A.S and the Glam which has The Scottish on it which is pretty great.
They sent me the wrong CD of Universal Plan which is fine as I can get the other one cheap on Ebay but annoyingly it doesn't come with any new songs (unless Nicotine Stain is counted as an actual song) It does have two songs recorded at the London Astoria January 18th 1998. I'm guessing Come Taste My Mind is the same version on the NME CD where he starts shouting about home safety being very fucking important. It's been years since I actually played that version but I kept that CD for only that song.
I just read about Shin-Yu's rants at their gigs and on Nicotine Stain it finnishes with him shouting he wants some kidney pie, you just don't get that with other bands.
I love the picture in the Universal Plan single of them at the live show. It looks really kind of iconic.
I'm waiting to get the Come Taste My Mind single next.

Also I just noticed one of the singles came with a card to send off for more Earl information. It has an address to contact with other fans directly maybe I should send it? I like how under the place to write my address it says what is your plan? with a space to fill out the answer.
On the other side it says
POP MUSIC IS WASTED ON THE YOUNG.

btw this is probably in my top 3 all-time band-specific ILM threads - there's just so much...desperate enthusiasm, not to put too fine a point on it! i kinda think of this band as being in a holy trinity of Englishness with The Fall and HMHB - and considering they only put out two records, that's saying a lot.
'Larky' single is of course three tracks of sheer, sheer brilliance. Needs more repping!
Oh and I'm totally backing S to do the EB story! Preferably starting with a big fuck-off paragraph about the first time he saw them. Which sounds like roughly the greatest gig experience anyone's ever had.
― your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 18:04 (fourteen years ago) link
It's hard to put my finger on why I love them so much. I was 13 when the first album came out and I bought their albums around a time when all I spent my money on was indie and Brit Pop a lot of which has been thrown out or forgotten about. They've stood the test of time better than nearly every band I loved at the time. Both the albums are perfect and sound like proper classics over 10 years on.
Not many bands sounded like they were having as much fun as Earl Brutus did and best of all they had huge tunes to back it all up with.
Larky is indeed a great single, England Sandwich is such a creepy and brilliant song.
I got to hear the Come Taste My Mind singe and it's B-sides today. Brilliant!
― Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 21:03 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah, and I've had Teenage Opera stuck in my head all day!
The first album has a run of tracks where it loses a bit of momentum (Motarola through Curtsy) and a couple of the tracks near the start are good but not great. The second album is pretty much perfect from start to finish. MAYBE they could have kept Midland Red as a b-side, because if anything it's the least brilliant, but fuck it still bangs, especially in the second half with those guitars. The one I'd especially like to praise is Male Wife, which is more or less as stunning a closing track as there is, especially considering it was their last album. It sounds like the end of music.
― your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 22:30 (fourteen years ago) link
It seems like a few people on here prefer the second album which I do but I really don't think there's much in it.
I think the opening five tracks on Your Majesty are all pretty special. I do agree Motarola is maybe the weakest moment but I absolutely love Shrunken Head especially when he starts singing Massive head in that really high voice. Curtsy is a sweet little interlude that gets you ready for Blind Date and Life's Too Long which which are two of the most powerful tracks. I think if anything the first album flows better. The drums at start of Life's Too Long are one of those great moments in rock, the timing is perfect.

Not disputing this; they're enormous. Karl Brutus is really pretty and I *love* the bonus track, wish it had been indexed separately. Don't even know what it's called!

The bonus track is a one off Christmas single they did on vinyl called Single Seater Xmas.

― your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:26 (fourteen years ago) link
If you do want Single Seater xmas separately someone is selling it on Ebay for 5.99 buy it now. I know as I've been searching out all their singles over the last few days. It's a one sided vinyl.
I don't know if you ever watched the ITV Chart Show? It used to have these top 10 indie charts every few weeks. There's a funny one from December 95 that has Earl Brutus at number one but obviously the song didn't have a video so they made their own with a floating picture of the behind in front of a burning fire. It's a brief clip but it is up on YouTube. It's funny that they are number one ahead of Wonderwall by Oasis. I can't ever imagine Earl Brutus outselling Oasis but it was a lovely moment.
Maybe when they finally bring out the boxset there will be an awesome instrumental disc.

Changing the subject slightly..what the hell is going on with that Baby Bird song?
― Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:57 (fourteen years ago) link
I do agree Motarola is maybe the weakest moment
Not having this! Sure, it's not their greatest moment but the last 1'14" is something else: the vocal harmonies, the echo and that fantastic, needling guitar ... fuck's sake, if anyone was doing stuff that sounded like that today, I'd be in clover.
but I absolutely love Shrunken Head especially when he starts singing Massive head in that really high voice
MASSIVE HEAD! MASSIVE HEAD! Er ... yes.
I dunno. Two perfect albums, really. Ultimately, I'd take Tonight ... because I think it just has that slight edge. And, y'know, Second Class War.
what the hell is going on with that Baby Bird song?
I don't remember that one at all! I thought I'd got everything he ever did (don't ask) but that seems to have been the very first single and totally passed me by.

I do really like Motarola but compared to the other tracks it's my least favorite. They have such a high standard. Earl Brutus are one of the few bands I'd give two albums 10/10 to.
I do own that boxset of those early Babybird albums but from that clip that song sounds just a little off. It was a one off vinyl with the excellent Lemonade Baby on the other side. Strange to think a year later he was in the top 3.

well, what can i say. on saturday i was lucky to be able to check out the first official live debut by the pre new.hanging out before the chaos with the band (Shin and Jamie Fry from EB, and some mates adding more noise) was very revealing.firstly and most shocking to me was finding out out there was/is a secret member of Earl Brutus who provides a lot of the lyrics, and even the vocals to 'on me, not in me'.secondly, jamie fry is soon to hit the mid century, but to say he is fired up re the Pre New would be an understatement.oh, and his "thirst for life" is anything but settling down.as to the actual gig ?well, Shin is on bass (something he isn't too happy about as it means he has to actually work as opposed to being able to just stand there and get sh*t faced!), and his stage presene consists of standing low, hair down covering face, bass neck vertical, and just letting loose.Jim on vocals dominates the stage (like Mark Stewart, Jamie is a big big man). No slacker appearance for him. Sharp suit, sharp shoes, and sharp 'tude. The music may have lacked the machine beats and synths that make EB so special, but this was just a practise session for the band to feel their feet, so it was pretty straight up rock sounding, but for 40 minutes they rattled out a couple of old classics ('universal plan' of course, the rest are a booze fueled blazed blur), and one or two new ones that have lyrics just as direct and wonderful as previously. the result of which was just a huge blast and very entertaining (Jamie using the venues air conditioning as extra percussion)unfortunately due to the need to get up @ 6am the next day, i was not able to stay out with them to celebrate the event, but i'm lead to believe things became somewhat messy.growing old disgracefully never felt or sounded so good.

it was beyond awesome.several times through the evening i just kept getting major rushes of 'what the fuck is happening here !'it was at times very surreal.eg. finding out that the drummer was part of electrafixation (live band version) and marion meaning a lot of 90s indie nerd talk was rather appropiate.my new favourite possession : a 'i'm with the pre new' badge

Deep roffles:
Speaking of Glastonbury, given the history of the band, you're not the most obvious band for the festival; did you end up having a so-called 'Glastonbury moment'?JF: Earl Brutus played on a rainy Sunday afternoon in the new bands tent when Pulp were headlining. It was pissing with rain, we were all in a bad mood, we got there at midday, played at 4pm and left at 1am. So that was my impression of Glastonbury. The only other thing that I thought was hilariously funny, was due to the mud, our gear had to be carried in on a land rover, and we had to walk and got covered in mud, but in front of us was Sean Lennon being carried by 2 roadies so he didn't get his feet dirty. We went on stage doing our thing, and a friend of ours was on the side of the stage when Sean walked up to him and said 'what's this shit?'. To which our friend said 'That's Earl Brutus, and your dad would have fucking loved them', leaving Sean stomping off in a strop. Of course, the fact that we had a full tent for our show that completely emptied when he came on after us was just hilarious.

Also pretty amazing:
Did you wear the suit?JF: Yeah, I always wear the suit on Saturday nights.Could you explain more, given that Earl Brutus were not a suit wearing band?JF: Always be true to yourself. Earl Brutus were a garage forecourt type of band, eating kebabs, but that was 13 years ago, and a lot has happened. Listen to the words in the new stuff; there is a truth to the new stuff, and we are no longer dysfunctional teens. Earl Brutus was talking about growing up in our thirties, now we are about a different era of pensions and property schemes.I've just spent 2 years on a property venture, in a bid to try and make money because I want a bit of money in my pockets when I get old. It didn't fail, and it didn't succeed, but I tell you what, it was fucking boring. I was exposed to that world, and so the words reflect that.Yeah, I put on the suit, dressing up and making a big deal of it. It's a northern thing, as Londoners don't seem to do it. I'm a middle aged man, and a middle age man wears a suit; I'm a grown up father of two, so I'm not going to talk about being broke on the dole, as I'm not.Plus if you're 6ft 1, you can get away with wearing a suit.Of course, I have to mention Martin [Fry, Jamie's older brother, lead singer of ABC] and the legend of his suit...JF: His was quite retro; mine's from Zara. Well, when I put on the suit, I do look like the big brother, but every band Martin and I ever listened to dressed up; like Dexys, Dr. Feelgood and Roxy Music. Me putting the suit on gets everyone going: last Saturday George [a fine drummer with recommended tales of his times in Marion and Electrafixation] wears a military outfit, and then Shinya says 'tonight it's showbiz night Jim' and pulls out a full Kimono and headband, and the twins put on their Clash styled t-shirts.
JF: Yeah, I always wear the suit on Saturday nights.

It's lovely. Really, really, really good record. Nothing's quite as monumental as Cathedral City Comedown (a MIGHTY statement of intent) or Albion, You've Done Nothing Wrong (although Night On Leather Mountain comes close) but the whole thing is really nicely put together and purveys a particularly aching strain of British melancholia. Even as it rocks the house down.
Not as good as either Earl Brutus album but then I don't think it's intended to be.

Funny thing, my ebay notification showed up Iljan Darc, couldn't recall why.
So, I looked into it and found he did a German cover version of MOD.
its on its way to me now.

ahh .. I see the debut is getting the deluxe 2cd treatment as well !
― mark e, Monday, 7 September 2015 16:25 (eight years ago) link
I was hoping they'd bring these out on vinyl too. I don't think Tonight You Are The Special One ever got a vinyl release and I'd love to get it.
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 7 September 2015 18:20 (eight years ago) link
Check the Cherry Red site, I think it is coming out on vinyl... or has already.
― Fields of Fat Henry (Tom D.), Monday, 7 September 2015 18:29 (eight years ago) link
YES! It's coming out on November 13th. I am absolutely chuffed. I managed to pick up the Your Majesty vinyl cheap a few years ago. This has made my day.
What a band!

Just listening to these albums as I'm reviewing them this week. Trying to get my head around what I can say about this perfect band.
― Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 13 January 2016 19:46 (eight years ago) link
as soon as these were announced i ordered both expanded editions, and the special ltd edition box, i.e. CLOSED, to put them in.
according to a FB post, the first 47 orders of said package gets an extra treat.
given that i ordered the whole lot within minutes of the announcement i am hoping to be part of the 47.
― mark e, Thursday, 14 January 2016 14:45 (eight years ago) link
I'm going with the vinyl. I couldn't justify getting the CDs as well right now. I'm sure I will regret that when I see what the extra treat is.
― Kitchen Person, Thursday, 14 January 2016 16:03 (eight years ago) link
i know what the treat is .. well kind of : an extra 7"don't know whats on it though.
― mark e, Thursday, 14 January 2016 17:48 (eight years ago) link
Where are you ordering these?
― djh, Thursday, 14 January 2016 23:05 (eight years ago) link
Haven't ordered my vinyl yet. Will probably order from here. Seems to be the only place you can get the Closed box set.

despite the fact it was written by someone who has history with the band, i loved reading that article.
i realise i am biased, but, the tracks on the extra cds are absolutely fantastic.

Anybody else having issues playing the first CD of the Your Majesty reissue? Wondering if it's down to that faux spray-paint finish. I feel like I should complain, but then again, seems to be in the spirit of Earl Brutus (i.e. a prank, like the Durutti Column sandpaper sleeve.) Caveat emptor!

playing the extra discs now as the digital lookup process worked for each extra disc.
bloody hell, this was a band for which even the throwaway b-sides were worthy.

I was just playing my vinyl of Tonight You Are The Special One earlier today. Pretty good band aren't they? It comes with a download code that I'm yet to use, wonder if it has all the bonus material as well?

i hope so, as the extra stuff is fantastic. get it fixed up KP !

the 1998 hagiographies are pukescent but even worse is the absence of Tonight You Are The Special One from literally all of them

‘Put Your Love In Me’, which is one of their best songs, is more like an album track than something you’d expect to hear on a greatest hits. You don’t hear that one on the radio but it’s one of their best singles.
It's one of the best singles by anyone ever, glad to see it mentioned. Great list throughout.
