Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill ( A Deal With God)

If I only could / Be Runnin' up that hill...

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

big sky, same record.

Silky Sensor (sexyDancer), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Pink Floyd: "Another Brick In The Wall"
Paul McCartney: "No More Lonely Nights"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, so we're distinguishing between codas and outros? Shit.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

What is the difference between an outro and a coda? I'd argue they're the same.

Keith C (kcraw916), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Thirteen Months in Six Minutes--The Wrens

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Shady Lane!

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I would say a coda is part of the written composition, while an outtro is just a part of the arrangement that ended up being recorded during the recording of the song. Bit hard to distinguish though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hey Jude", of course

Keith C (kcraw916), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't most parts of the arrangement end up being recorded during the recording of the song?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Maggie May"

Silky Sensor (sexyDancer), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

In think this distinction is hairsplitting. It's definitely threadsplitting.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, there's this bit in Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer', in the video it's the moment at the end when he becomes the stars, and suddenly huge 80s drums go BOOM-TSCHAK-BOOM-TSCHAK. The whole song should have been like that. ;)

Omar (Omar), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, so Shady Lane is definitely a coda and not an outro..

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll tackle this one...a coda is a part of the song that is structurally distinct from the other parts. While an outro could just be the main progression with some ad-libbing over it, goofy noises, etc. Music majors, please correct.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Love Will Tear Us Apart!!

best part of the song. (original single version, obv, not unnecessary later version that ruined the outro/coda/end bit.)

Lee F# (fsharp), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"Trouble," Indigo Girls.

Justin, Friday, 18 March 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Pink Floyd: "Another Brick In The Wall"
Paul McCartney: "No More Lonely Nights"

What, no "FM" by Steely Dan?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah... i thought, which is a bad sign, i thought that an outro is the opposite of and intro... so you have distinct meaning there. THE END or near end.

using that def., i choose arcade fire "wake up"... cause most of the song... i was like...okay... and then when that piano flies in and we go from sap to dancing... ALL IS WELL. they do this a couple times and those couple times on the record are probably my favorite parts of the record because it's like sweet relief.

m.

msp (msp), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Steely Dan had some great outros: "Kid Charlemenge", "Reelin' in the Years", "My Old School," etc

Keith C (kcraw916), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

big sky, same record.

"Cloudbusting" as well.

Thinking of others, going off artists people have already mentioned:

Paul McCartney: "Take It Away"

Steely Dan: "Bodhisattva"

Peter Gabriel: "San Jacinto"

Rod Stewart: "Every Picture Tells a Story"

ffirehorse, Friday, 18 March 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Sex Pistols "New York" vs Sting "Love is the Seventh Wave"

dave q (listerine), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Practically all of the outros on Jazzmatazz.

ffirehorse, Friday, 18 March 2005 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Van Halen "Everybody Wants Some"

dave q (listerine), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hey Jude" has one of the worst outros ever. Repetitive and boring. Would have benefited from being cut 3-4 minutes.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The ending of "Sledgehammer" is only in the video. Same about a-ha's "Take On Me", whose outro sounds a lot better in the video than on record.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose it's more like the last 2 and a half minutes of the cut, but the end of Marillion's "Script for a Jester's Tear" pretty much makes the song. I can't say I care for the song up to that point, but I absolutely love it from that point on. Really whiny and beautiful.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope you mean Wilson Pickett's version of "Hey Jude," wherein Duane Allman and the Criteria crew switch to scorched earth policy and level the tune.

imbidimts, Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

That IS a good one.

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Crimson and Clover" extended version

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

the flaming lips - placebo headwound

fauxhemian (fauxhemian), Saturday, 19 March 2005 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Diana Ross: "Eaten Alive". Best part of the song.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 19 March 2005 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The guitar outro of "There's No Other Way" by Blur is my favorite part.

The outro of "Beyond Belief" by Elvis Costello is a heart-breaking way to end the song --- right when it really gets cooking, it fades out.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 19 March 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Interpol's "Not Even Jail" has an awesome outro as well.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 19 March 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The three minutes of gut-wrenching heartache-causing squalling feedback on Kitchens of Distinction's "Hammer"...and it's already the best song on Love is Hell before it gets to that point!

Quit glaring at Ian Riese-Moraine! He's mentally fraught! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 19 March 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, they had a lot of great outros..."Prize", "Margaret's Injection", "On Tooting Broadway Station", "Blue Pedal", and "Drive That Fast" are particularly astonishing.

Quit glaring at Ian Riese-Moraine! He's mentally fraught! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 19 March 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh fudge, should I have put those under codas? Even with the definitions listed I'm still confused.

Quit glaring at Ian Riese-Moraine! He's mentally fraught! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 19 March 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Even Jordan, who has given examples of his advanced musical schooling on another thread, can't tell the difference. These two threads should have been one.

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 19 March 2005 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Pixies, "Number 13 Baby"

mnra, Saturday, 19 March 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Crimson and Clover wins!

57 7th (calstars), Saturday, 19 March 2005 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Try a Little Tenderness" - it's like a vertical takeoff.

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 19 March 2005 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Where would the "Wurm" section of "Starship Trooper" fall -- outro or coda or, um, section?

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 19 March 2005 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Layla (not that it wouldn't be great without one)

Sore Loser, Saturday, 19 March 2005 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Cinnamon Girl, Neil Young and Crazy Horse

Austin (Austin), Saturday, 19 March 2005 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Goodbye Stranger" Supertramp...way, way too short!

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 19 March 2005 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I can never get enough of the organ v guitar freakout at the end of Isaac Hayes' version of 'Walk On By'.

this here giraffe, Saturday, 19 March 2005 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stand!"--Sly & the Family Stone (though I guess it's a coda)

late adopter, Saturday, 19 March 2005 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ignition (remix) - r-kelly : i love and could listen to the little bit at the end with the keyboard a thousand times (actually, i have).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Saturday, 19 March 2005 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Karma Police, Radiohead.

'for a minute, i lost myself..'

, Saturday, 19 March 2005 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Sludgefeast, Dinosaur Jr.

autovac (autovac), Saturday, 19 March 2005 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ain't No Fun Waiting Round to Be A Millionaire" - AC/DC

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Saturday, 19 March 2005 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Roxy Music - In Every Dream Home a Heartache (The whole last two minutes, and especially the flanged fade-in for the last half minute... does this count?)

D.J. Anderson, puzzled, Saturday, 19 March 2005 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

David Bowie - Repetition, with all those drum fills that Dennis Davis manages to sneak in at the end.

Deluxe (Damian), Saturday, 19 March 2005 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Layla (not that it wouldn't be great without one)

see, i've always thought the coda/outro/whatever is basically another song ... and one that's a hell of a lot better than the main bit.

good call on the kitchens of distiction, above. yes.

me: i'll cite "as it is when it was" by new order and "pure and simple" by the lightning seeds. same outro, still ace.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 19 March 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)
