Over the past few months I have become fascinated by Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac. I had always liked their music but for whatever reason this stuff has become a lot more interesting and resonant for me recently...Also, I figured that there were probably a significant number of readers who either were not very aware of Lindsey’s music or hadn’t given it much thought.

Considering who likely reads Fluxblog in 2011, this is probably true.

Sadly, this is turning out to be pretty true. Third hand information, but I heard through a friend of a friend this weekend that he got a cease and desist email for posting album covers on his blog.

tbh this kind of thing has looked like an inevitability for at the very least 4-5 years now. i tried to stop posting anything that might make my sites a target way back then, i just hope they're only really paying attention to things that were posted recently but i don't know if that's naive to think.

heh i just got a DMCA complaint notification on my blogger account. of course it doesn't say WHAT post they took down, but it's probably a really old one from years ago when i sporadically posted mp3s. anyone have an idea how at risk i am for getting the whole thing taken down or if i should just start deleting any old expired mp3 link just to be safe, or is this all guesswork right now?

I don't think this is in any way unique to Matthew......

Essentially, they let regular civilians mp3 bloggers do what only MP3 bloggers print publications used to do: Identify music worthwhile of publication to the global consciousness and then publish it. Everybody can be an “MP3 blogger” music jounalist of sorts, by merely logging in to Spotify with Facebook signing up for blogspot.

I can only hope to someday forget Urge, MTV/Microsoft's failed attempt to use music bloggers to save the .wma file

I remember Drowned in Sound when it was a review site on which they let their 16 year old writers post whatever without any kind of editorial oversight, and then after the reviews had been up for a while Sean would delete the ones that he didn't agree with. o i agree it's just ten (TEN) years ago when the music 'writing' on ilx was better than 95% of the music writing i'd find elsewhere if you'd told me that ten years later ilxors would be all over music criticism esp at pfork i would've assumed that obv the state of music criticism had improved, esp at pfork. and i'm not sure it has. then again maybe it has - tom's popular is fantastic and marcello's then play long is really really incredible, but neither of those guys are getting paid. perpetua is. ilx doesn't bear any responsibility for this state of affairs obv.

the answer, i think, is that morally good /= "i actually want to read what you have to say" good

like, democracy is a wonderful ideal, but a very poor editor

yeah this is stupid as hell but i think i might've actually thought at one point that the easy instant access to music now meant that the descriptive role and judgmental role of rockcrit would fade away (you no longer needed the critic to tell you what a record sounded like or if it was good, you could find that out yrself immediately and in less time than it took to finish a review) and we'd be left w/ actual insight as the goal ie good criticism (or my definition anyway). this didn't happen, if anything the opposite. now post-deluge rockcrit's main role seems to be as a filter, ie i'll check out something if it gets best new music or 4.0 or higher at resident advisor etc but i pretty much never actually read an actual review and i'm not sure i've ever seen lex have any kind of actual insight but as a filter he's very effective, a much better algorithm than pandora or whatever.

thanks, but you know what, i'm inspired by marcello. he's basically writing a book on his blog and that seems like the way to go for me. just gonna keep posting essay-length things on my blog when i feel inspired (perhaps linking things thematically as if they were chapters), and when i have enough stuff, maybe see if anyone is interested in publishing. i do like the idea of real books.

I don't know. Confession time: I've been glum the last seven or eight weeks wondering what or the hell I'm writing for; although my blog gets a decent hit count I don't know whether it matters. I still do the occasional professional reviewing job. I just tell myself to keep writing, that the writing is its own defense. I don't ever envision a moment when I'll say the hell with it: I love it too much and I need it, pure and simple. But the question of who the audience is never fades.
