WFMU Record Fair

So as it turns out I'm gonna be in NY for the record fair. Like whoa. So can vets of this thing tell me: how picked-over is everything gonna be if I show up after seven p.m. on Friday, when the admission price drops from 20 dollars to a mere 5? Is the stuff that goes early mostly high-ticket (which I'm not looking to buy anyhow) or will the bargain-ish bins also be slim pickings by the time the price drops? Please advise.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:39 (twenty years ago) link

I assume all available NY ilxors are gonna show up drunk at the instore I'm doin' in Williamsburg on Friday night, right?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago) link

One possibility is calling WFMU and volunteering to load and unload records from people's cars -- that way you can come in for free on Friday.

It may be too late to do this, though. (I myself forgot.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:41 (twenty years ago) link

Well, OK, if you're gonna do an in-store, the question is moot.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:42 (twenty years ago) link

wait sorry THURSDAY night

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:42 (twenty years ago) link

if I volunteer to help load & unload records during the first outta-town-mainly-for-leisure trip my wife & I have taken in several years, she will kill me dead.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:43 (twenty years ago) link

Ah! Well, go nuts then.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:43 (twenty years ago) link

But she won't kill you dead for going to a record fair during this same trip?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:44 (twenty years ago) link

I was about to say, John, you must tread warily.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:45 (twenty years ago) link

Going early on Friday is HIGHLY recommended because you avoid the crush of grabby grimy gimme-gimme record collectors.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:45 (twenty years ago) link

shhhhhhhhhh you guys please I am pretty sure I've got this thing finessed

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:45 (twenty years ago) link

Well, I've never shelled out for early admission, and I always come away with armloads of great things, usually bought for less than $10 each. It's definitely crowded during the general admission times, but my impression is that the early admission crowd is the traditional, high-ticket "collectors," so if you're just looking around for cool stuff (as opposed to desperately seeking a particular item), you'll be fine.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago) link

(not "shhhh" advice obv. but she barely blinked when I learned that we were going to be in town the same weekend as the famed record fair - also, I earned some points by not bringing home loads of records from the last European tour)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:47 (twenty years ago) link

Dealers swarm to the "psych" tables when the doors open at 4. But there's a vast amount of stuff, no one can look through all of it in three hours, so if you show up at seven you should be good. It's even worth poking your head in on Sat / Sun, because you'll get some new sellers coming in on those days. Worthy cause, too. . .

The other thing to keep in mind is that dealers continually replenish. I've gone on Sunday and had better luck than early Saturday. If you go Fri night or Sat morning, you'll be fine. Unless you're looking for something crazy. It's a fucking lot of records!

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago) link

just for the record, there's always still tons of good stuff on sundays, and dealers much more willing to make deals as they don't want to carry the stuff home. Also, WFMU DJs get tables for free on sunday, so there's tons of dealers who wouldn't have had tables on friday or saturday. Robin Edgerton sold me the O Level CD for six bucks late on a sunday afternoon, for instance.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:43 (twenty years ago) link

John, you will have fun!

this is like one of those time-travel movies where no matter what the hero changes in the past, the guy with the patch over one eye still ends up ruling the world in 2067

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:55 (twenty years ago) link

yes JBR - week from tonight. Damn and here I thought you meant you were leaving a week from Fri. morning, not Fri. morning.

stence I'll be around but my wife and I will be doin' the celebrate-our-6th-wedding-anniversary-&-ninth-year-overall-as-a-couple thing, so I prolly can't make the party as one instore & a record fair is probably stretching things already

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago) link

J.D., you'll find plenty of great stuff no matter when you go, and as Dan said, there's significantly different stuff Saturday and Sunday. (I'd actually go one of those days rather than Friday night--more dealers show up.) If you're looking for ultrarare ultracollectibles, then early might be the way to go. Otherwise, take it easy and enjoy.

Robin Edgerton really does sell awesome stuff there...

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 22 April 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago) link

Friday night is a good time to go, but that can get kinda crazy. Lots of rabid record collector types, very competitive. You'll be fine if you go on Saturday or Sunday - there will be some new vendors each day, which changes the dynamic. Are you looking for anything in specific, John? If not, it's probably just best to embrace chance and chaos.

I'll be there both Saturday and Sunday working at the WFMU tables in the afternoon. If I recall, I'm at the WFMU used record tables on Saturday, and the WFMU merch booth on Sunday.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 22 April 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago) link

J0hn I'll email you the details anyway and if you find yourself and the missus in Brooklyn around post time, you should at least drop by for a quick julep.

hstencil, Thursday, 22 April 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago) link

How great is that. Just get the mountain goats record, like it a lot and then there's an in-store.

Totally unrelated, but seeing as many of you are familiar with Pete's, does anyone know if they still make those diablos?

I had one 2 weeks ago, very nice.

ddb, Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:03 (twenty years ago) link

I am too broke to even volunteer this year :(

But I have found good stuff on Sundays, too. I bought a dress from Robin at the last fair.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:16 (twenty years ago) link

i'm excited about this, but have never been before:

i know that prices etc will vary, but let's generalize:
for standard items, let's say, erm, Pavement's "Crooked Rain"! on CD, are we talking, likely, $4, $7 or $10?

And for, say, the first Clean album on CD, are we talking $7 or $12?

Cos not wanting to be a killjoy before I go, at these kinds of things I often end up paying prices I can find elsewhere, and buying things cos they're there, not cos I really want them.
In other words: is it mostly for collectors?

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:08 (twenty years ago) link

It depends on the seller. Some sellers have some pretty deep discounts, and others have very unreasonable prices. Some dealers specializing in rare old vinyl will definitely guage and bleed collectors dry if they get half a chance.

If you're looking for a used copy of that Pavement record, I'd guess that it'd generally fall into the $7-10 range, as with any used record store. Basically, the fair is just a hundred used record stores all in one big room.

There's so much interesting stuff at the fair that you're bound to find some cool stuff - it might not even be music, it could be books/dvds/magazines/memorabilia/non-music recordings/art/etc. It's a very overwhelming thing.

I haven't bought much at the last few fairs, but I always walk away with a small Steve Keane painting of a famous record cover. Last time, I got a mini Sonic Youth "Dirty" and the last time before that it was the Fall's "Hex Enduction Hour."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:35 (twenty years ago) link

Anyone know if I can sell CDs & vinyl (without having to set up a booth)? Or should I just bring them to OtherKimsetc.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago) link

Kim's is probably the best deal in the city for selling used cds

sexyDancer, Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:51 (twenty years ago) link

Tanks. I'll plan on selling my (crap) CDs and heading over to the record fair to buy new ones!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 22 April 2004 21:09 (twenty years ago) link

It's too late to set up a booth. The fair isn't really a good place for selling records to dealers. If you want to sell stuff at the next fair, you should contact Mike Lupica at WFMU.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 22 April 2004 21:27 (twenty years ago) link

I think Saturday's sold out, but we have tables for Sunday. Email mike@wfmu.org for the skinny.

I don't think Steve Keene's coming this time unfortunately.... but should also mention that when you're tired shopping there's gonna be a boatload of great/insane videos showing in the A/V lounge, punk clips, The Gary Wilson doc, this fantastic Nihilist Spasm Band documentary I saw in London this year and tracked down for the fair that is just mindblowing....

There's gonna be a live karaoke band too plus Brother JT and Ill Ease playing. And yeah, Sunday's a great day for pickins with different dealers. I got the George Harrassment /homosexuals offshoot record for $10 on a sunday...

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Friday, 23 April 2004 03:21 (twenty years ago) link

Oh is that the Nihilist Spasm Band thing that Zev Asher did? Yeah that is wonderful! I saw it a couple years ago at a film fest. A must must must see!! Nice work getting it, Brian.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 23 April 2004 03:29 (twenty years ago) link

Also, the FMU table of used cds doesn't get opened until 7pm Friday when the regular, non-$20-paying people are allowed entry. This is mainly so the dealers who are already at the fair don't clean us out of our good cheapies which they go and resell. Many of the $20 people are there to get the big-deal collectables anyway, so it kind of makes sense. I advise anyone coming Friday evening to check out the $3, $8 and $1 CD tables, they are looking pretty good this year (esp. the $3 CDs). Say hi, I'll be manning em and beating the dealers off with my electrified cattleprod.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Friday, 23 April 2004 03:33 (twenty years ago) link

Tyrannosaurus Rex - Unicorn LP
Syl Johnson - Total Explosion LP

lotta music celebs there - Thurston, Tom Verlaine, Todd Terry, etc

2 or 3 record fairs ago I was undergoing a serious Undertones phase and even though I had the CDs, found a dealer w/ most of the singles and picked up my 3 favorite songs in that lovely 7" format, You've Got My Number, My Perfect Cousin and Wednesday Week.

Paul, you still at Tower?

I just came back -- didn't buy one damn thing, but was tapped by Jimmy The Mod (or, as he said, "Jimmy the Asshole Mod").

Anyway, same ol' stuff -- but a thinning demographic. Sort've depressing, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I went and didn't buy anything too. And Alex, agreed about the demographic. Some old rockers look extremely rough.
Also made me realise I'm only looking for a few records at any one time (which I usually forget about after a few months, before the process begings again).

paulhw (paulhw), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Chuck's table has been the old standbye...but he sells things for what they're worth, so not exactly "deals". Better off buying the CDs!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I stopped by this afternoon and picked up a few things. Nothing especially rare, just a few decent records in better than average condition.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 8 November 2004 00:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Was Chuck the guy in the best of NYC Village Voice shirt?
He may have stopped by my table.
Shoulda said hi.
Did finally meet with Mr. Perpetua, a fine upstanding lad.
I promised myself I wasn't going to get a thing as I'm broke.
Here's what I got:
Plastikman: Artifakts
UGK: Dirty Money and Ridin' Dirty
Basement Jaxx: Lucky Star single (Remixes!)
Capone n' noreaga: The War Report
Cappadonna: the Yin and the Yang
Plus another twelve discs or so of stuff that I know nothing about and will explore. A curious CD for a buck is a bargain.
Oh! And a cool silkscreen buddyholly shirt.
Not bad for twenty five bucks.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 8 November 2004 01:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Mary (Mary), Monday, 8 November 2004 01:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Whoa. I just cracked cellophane on one of the "nothing abouts" and found a serious winner!
Japanese hip hop from a band called Ill Mariachi, album title: 'Tha Masta Blusta'.
MC Shan sample on a track called 'Nagoya Queens'!
Strange noise music for good measure!
On first listening, I'm impressed!

here's johnny: magic moments from the tonight show (casablanca records, 2 LPs, 1974, comes with a poster!)

let's clear the air: presented by con edison ("nuclear energy: is it the safe energy a growing world needs?" and other promotional propaganda; cover design is an idyllic 1970s blue sky with a bright white lightbulb in the bottom foreground)

linda ronstadt - get closer (one of her early '80s pop records; couple of jimmy webb covers on here)

signs of the zodiac: cancer (part of mort garson's awesomely stupid late '60s series of astrology-psych records... i almost got a non-garson astrology LP another seller had, but in the end i decided it wasn't worth paying $3 for).

in my experience i've found that mercer place to be not worth my time. lots of garbage none too cheap with a sprinkling of good stuff (quite a few sealed NNCK pressings too) correctly priced. can never find any deals. i thinks its only worthwile if youre after folk/blues/soundtracks.

i've never found folk or blues stuff there of any interest--i've gotten some tape music LPs there though that are cool. and sun city girls LP, and Ni**a Please, and some other stuff I can't remember now.

but anyway, talk about FMU some more. I'm not sure i'm gonna be able to go.

disappointing goth fest line-up (orion), Sunday, 22 October 2006 02:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Never been, but thinking of going this year...what's the price range on the stuff? Is it all mostly obscure by ILM standards?

def zep (calstars), Sunday, 22 October 2006 11:06 (seventeen years ago) link

all over the map...and it fluctuates depending on dealers. There's definitely been more dance music in the last few years, though I didn't go last year because i was a BROKE broke broke. Some dealers will def. have obscure by ILM standards, I mean, when Jim O'Rourke and Thurston and and Byron Coley and Wayne Rogers are selling records, you know they're gonna represent. There's one awesome hip-hop dude where nothing is priced and you're like WOW! because you think they're all 2 dollar records or something then you hand him a pile and he's like, this is 15, this is 20, and you have to put most of them back. Then you get Chuck Warner and Every One of them a Hit and all these dealers with nothing but 7"s from 77-82, that's fun stuff, and local NY stores bringing out their best stuff, Gimme Gimme sold me the impLOG 12" a few years ago, a steal at 35 dollars. Sunday's good because a) people want to sell their shit so they don't have to carry it back to kansas or whatever, and b) WFMU DJs get tables for free, so you instead of everyone being dealer/collectorscum, you get some people just unloading stuff. Best was when Robin Edgerton got rid of all her CDs...I picked up the O Level CD for 6 bucks. I think I'm going this year even though I'm still a broke joke, hopefully those dudes from montreal with all the hi-nrg 12"s nobody cares about will be there again....

HOLY SHIT I'll actually be in town for this. The screenings look cool too:

Kraut Ruben Documentary
Rarely seen German rock! We'll be showing 2 hours worth of excerpts from a WDR German TV series showing some extremely rare, excellent quality videos and TV performances from the cream of 1970's rock scene, including: Popol Vuh, Faust, Organisation, Floh de Cologne, Guru Guru, Broselmaschine, very early Tangerine Dream, and more.

The Fall
Comprehensive BBC Channel 4 documentary documents the three-decade history of Manchester's Fall, live footage, clips, interviews with Mark E. Smith and band members past and present. (60 min)

Yep, those are both from my collection --- the WDR stuff is amazing, I put a few clips up on our blog recently - it's from a 6 hour special but I edited out a lot of the less interesting stuff (plus all the interviews were in German), try to catch it.

If you fuck with Jimmy Mod, you call down the thunder (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Monday, 6 November 2006 04:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I wouldn't pay more money for vinyl when Press Color on CD is cheaper, but the point I was making was that it wasn't a dollar record. I mean, I found a 100 or something dollar hip-hop record in the dollar bin, that doesn't make it a "dollar record"! Press Color was cut-out and would pop-up occasionally in NY dollar bins 5 or 10 years ago but was still generally sold for for 15 or 20 bucks on the internet.

Joseph...you talking about the dreadlocked guy? He had these amazing old-school electro/hip-hop record for 50+ so I stopped looking, then someone told me he had some fuzz dance and italo record as well, and I didn't even bother going back to look. Simonetti had a copy of Dirty Talk on friday night, probably affordable.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 6 November 2006 05:27 (seventeen years ago) link

and no, I wasn't buying records on the internet 10 years ago. 8 years maybe. rec.music.marketplace.vinyl or whatever! got like, 8 Sparks records for a dollar a piece!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 6 November 2006 05:37 (seventeen years ago) link

that's the one, dan. i did get the "change the beat" 12" from him for (relatively) cheap at least.

joseph (joseph), Monday, 6 November 2006 05:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I love Change the Beat...you have to get all of those records, Laswell/Celluoid had a series of hip-hop releases w/ the Futura artwork, like the Time Zone-Wildstyle 12" and Phase II's At the Roxy. There's also a few B-Side/Odeon 12"s that are a lot of fun, she being the french rapper all over these records.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 6 November 2006 13:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Really bummed I missed it this year, but seriously, last time I went I had a list of a ton of records I wanted... Didn't work out so well. I would hand it to the dealers with sad puppy eyes and they'd stroke their long psyche/metal locks and say, "Oh, that's in my personal collection..."

Excerpt from e-mail press release I received. Those major labels are so hip:

Burbank, CA – Warner Bros. Records — the No. 1 vinyl label in the country — will bring vinyl directly to the people this weekend by hosting a booth at the annual WFMU Record Fair in New York City. The event, known as a worldwide Mecca for music enthusiasts and vinyl fans, will be held October 23rd through the 25th at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W. 18th Street in Manhattan.

"There is no better place to sell music directly to fans than at the annual WMFU show," says Warner Bros. Records General Manager Tom Biery, who oversees all of the company’s vinyl releases. "As a vinyl freak, I have been going to the show for years and have always thought that having a WBR/Reprise booth to sell our records would be a ton of fun as well as a great learning experience.”

This weekend also kicks off Warner Bros. Records’ relationship with vinyl-only indie label, Original Recording Group (ORG), which will be manning the WBR booth.

At the show, Reprise Records will unveil, for the first time, legendary singer-songwriter Neil Young's first four catalog reissues, including the direct-to-fan 180-gram Limited Edition box set. Those titles, Neil Young, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, After The Gold Rush, and Harvest, have been meticulously cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering from the original master tapes (under the direct supervision of Neil Young's team) and manufactured at the world’s premiere record-pressing plant, Pallas MFG/Germany. This is the first-ever upgrade to these essential recordings on vinyl and is sure to delight both fans and audiophiles alike.

I went today, got a Roy Harper LP and a weird Japanese Stranglers EP. Crazy fun but, by the early afternoon it had turned into an insane clusterfuck.

Great crowd; many people with personal turntables for vinyl checking, japanese guys toting those suitcases on wheels, filled with records and a surprising amount of cute girls. I thought vinyl hunting was a dorky guy thing only.

And maybe the LP jackets are nicer (gatefolds, or something). The boxes are a limited edition of 3000. They brought "low numbers" to the show. The lps individually are 20 bucks each. The guy said he's heard the analog master tapes, and these disks are the closest he's ever heard to them.

I didn't get 'em.

Thus Sang Freud, Sunday, 25 October 2009 03:50 (fourteen years ago) link

So, essentially $36 per LP

ridiculous, but sort of expected today

I'll prolly eventially get most of them

sucks , but i am junkie and it's Neil..

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 25 October 2009 03:58 (fourteen years ago) link

eh, my originals will do fine.

ian, Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:00 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, I obv love my originals .. I DON'T see me buying that "box", but I do think I could be enticed to buying a sweet-ass 180 of 'After the Goldrush'

I mean, my original Reprise is tight, but that's one of the best albums ever created by a human being so I might just plunk it down for that one.

Will still be satisfied with my original "Neil Young" (name not on cover) LP ... that thing sounds sweet ... "Old Laughing Lady" ... sounds fucking insanely beautiful, don't need anything but this pressing, thanks....

Only $20 per lp if you get the individual 140 gram ones. The 180 gram ones are only available as a set, in the box.

Robin always has the best deals. I got the O Level CD for like 6 bucks from her a few years ago.

dan selzer, Sunday, 25 October 2009 20:28 (fourteen years ago) link

ust for the record, there's always still tons of good stuff on sundays, and dealers much more willing to make deals as they don't want to carry the stuff home. Also, WFMU DJs get tables for free on sunday, so there's tons of dealers who wouldn't have had tables on friday or saturday. Robin Edgerton sold me the O Level CD for six bucks late on a sunday afternoon, for instance.
