What songs have that touch o' the ol' woman hatin', but are still great? I'm a big fan of "In the Summertime," despite

if her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal
if her daddy's poor, just do what you feel

And I've always liked that old song about how you should never make a pretty woman your wife. Though I'm not sure whether that's misogyny, or actual wisdom.

And oh yeah, The Rolling Stones to thread.

I guess the key is to be able to separate the views of the artist from their talent at writing songs. I can dance around the room listening to "Under My Thumb," but I'm equally able to go, "Jesus, Mick! That's some cold shit!"

Does 'Be Hit' by Smog count? I'm not sure.

Be Hit

Every girl I've ever loved
Has wanted to be hit
Every girl I've ever loved
Wanted to be hit
Every girl I've ever loved
Has wanted to be hit
Every girl I've ever loved
Left me, 'cause I wouldn't do it.

Got some advice for you friend
Ba-ba-bruise 'em, you'll never lose 'em
Ba-ba-bruise 'em, you'll never lose 'em
Alright now

Seems my sensitive touch
Can be given by, any old shmuck
Alright now

I can hold a woman down on a hardwood floor (Smog, again). Or should that be ((Smog), again)? I think his misogyny is balanced by a loathing of men too, though - and I've always interpreted Be Hit as a reluctant acceptance that sometimes women want men to be more insensitive than a sensitive man wants to be. It's a cousin to Joe Jackson's Is She Really Going Out With Him?

At least Bill Callahan's aware, unlike all that Rolling Stones "women are there to be used" crap. (And I know, songs are not necessarily a reflection of the singer's views, but I can't help feeling that both Bill and Mick are at least roughly approximating their real personalities in their performances).

Meta-question: would a thread entitled "Enjoying Racism: This song celebrates lynching niggers or roasting Jews" go down quite as palatably on ILM?

I'm not being the annoying feminist here, because I do enjoy many of these bands (including the Rolling Stones and AC/DC) - I'm just really curious and it's a genuine question. Can we recconcile ourselves to misogyny in a way that we can't recconcile other hatreds or prejudices?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:06 (twenty years ago) link

I actually enjoy all kinds of songs where the political content of the lyrics don't jibe with my beliefs. I don't think it's that much of a contradiction, and unless you're listening to something like Skrewdriver where the beliefs are more than just a narrative conceit and/or reinforced by action, then it doesn't matter that much.

Although I will say that society definitely tolerates misogynist lyrics far more than racist ones. But then again, I'm not entirely unsure that society doesn't tolerate misogynist actions more than racist ones, either.

hstencil, Friday, 23 May 2003 14:06 (twenty years ago) link

Interesting that someone brought up Guns N Roses, because they are the only "casual racism" lyrics that I can think of right now - and those lyrics brewed up one hell of a tempest in a teapot. In a way that the casual misogyny and casual sexism of many of the songs mentioned here have just not.

kate, Friday, 23 May 2003 14:11 (twenty years ago) link

Can we recconcile ourselves to misogyny in a way that we can't recconcile other hatreds or prejudices?

That's one of the things I was wondering when I started the thread. The difference, I think, is that songs about evil women that done ya wrong are a staple of blues and rock, whereas songs about black people that done ya wrong are not. There's nothing wrong with lamenting how your girl been bad to ya, but there's a fine line that some cross. Singing about how blacks or Jews been bad to ya is never acceptable, and never has been, in any quantity.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:11 (twenty years ago) link

would a thread entitled "Enjoying Racism: This song celebrates lynching niggers or roasting Jews" go down quite as palatably on ILM?

I think if you re-phrased it, yes. There have been plenty of threads asking how, as music lovers, we can love music that we find morally reprehensible. I've enjoyed a lot of music with themes of racism/misogyny, and it hasn't affected my ethics.

Singing about how blacks or Jews been bad to ya is never acceptable, and never has been, in any quantity.

So why is this?

Is it OK to sing about women been bad to ya wanna kill em cause individual girls have been bad to you? If that were the case, we could find loads of cases of individual bad Jews or blacks to make casual racism OK.

Nick Cave to thread

flowersdie (flowersdie), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:17 (twenty years ago) link

But there's a line as to what's acceptable, even when you can digest the parts you don't agree with and recognize them as such. You can't (or I can't) say that I like Johnny Rebel's "Who Likes a Nigger" because it's catchy. That's just flat-out horrible. But is "Under my Thumb" any less offensive to women? In the former song, there's talk of alligator bait, and in the latter, talk of stupid dogs.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:19 (twenty years ago) link

Thing is, WHY is there a line inside which it's acceptible? No one on a class thread would just shrug and say "well, that's just the way that it is."

Sorry for making you all have to think like this when I guess you just wanted a "Top 100 Misogynistic Songs!" Real thread-killer, me.

kate, Friday, 23 May 2003 14:30 (twenty years ago) link

I think the answer to these questions is fairly obvious, Kate: Gender relations, at least where I'm from, are a lot kinder than race relations. If you put Average Joe Whiterollingstonesfan in a room with ten strange black men giving him the eye he will be uncomfortable (that's not right, that's just the way it is, etc.), while at the same time, said gentleman would be feeling pretty good about himself in a room with ten strange women staring him down.

Adam A. (Keiko), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:32 (twenty years ago) link

Not if they're ten leather biker mamas with weapons.

I like a lot of misogynist music, because it's much more honest.

And I can laugh at the dumber stuff because it gives me something to feel superior to.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, and not if they're ten Steve Urkel-looking motherfuckers either. Meta-question: would this thread have reveived any serious answers had it been called Hatin' on Bitches & Dykes: Better for Dancing?

I think racist music would be pretty honest coming from a lot of people, too.

Adam A. (Keiko), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:42 (twenty years ago) link

So your argument boils down to: Misogyny is OK because women are the weaker sex, unable to fight back, and therefore not threatening.

Oh, now I see everything much more clearly.

Honesty... now that might be a better excuse. ???

"I'm gonna beat my woman until I am satisfied..."

Shit, no wonder he went to the crossroads to sell his soul to the devil.

Musicians get taken more to task about violence or unsavory acts listed in their lyrics more so than novelists or people making movies or tv. Every once in a while a writer or movie pushes beyond a certain point that raises hackles, but that line is often times further out than some song lyrics.

earlnash, Friday, 23 May 2003 15:00 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't say women weren't threatening, were the weaker sex. It wasn't even in the subtext. That is so completely far away from the point I was trying to make. I can see how you would read that into what I said, though, and I apologize for any offense.

My argument boils down to: Women & Men have a long history of living together [mostly] peacefullly. Since the beginning of humanity, in fact. It's a pretty fucking complicated relationship, but in a different way than race, and I don't think your comparison upthread was very pertinent.

Adam A. (Keiko), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:01 (twenty years ago) link

Kate: You raise an excellent point, but I am curious. You say you like occasionally mysogynistic bands such as AC/DC and the Stones--how do YOU reconcile liking them?

Lee G (Lee G), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:09 (twenty years ago) link

I ask myself that all the time. Things like the Rolling Stones, I can kind of justify it, saying "well, this was very much OF ITS TIME and they wouldn't get away with it these days" (even though they clearly do). AC/DC, it's more for the irony value, or the "know your enemy" sort of thing. It does give an insight into how men think.

It's all about the lurve, it messes with everyone's heads in all sorts of ways..."gurls suck!" is the kneejerk reaction of every rejected male evah, of course songs expressing the same sentiment are gonna be plentiful. Almost all of the examples listed here are about the singer getting rejected by a female in some way, so I pretty much take it for granted that none of the singers REALLY believe all the shit they're saying because if they did why did they try to score in the first place? It's a self-defense mechanism, i'm not saying it's excusable in every occasion, but it's certainly less likely to be taken seriously by me than a racist song would.

Another point: "boyz suck" is as much of a seld-defense mechanism for females as "gurls suck" is for males, but are there that many female equivalents to "Under My Thumb"? Liz Phair is all that comes to mind...

Misanthropist not misandronist, because man is/was both gender-specific and gender-inclusive.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:25 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think there's anything gender-specific about "misanthropist". See Webster's:

Main Entry: mis·an·thrope
Pronunciation: 'mi-s&n-"thrOp
Function: noun
Etymology: Greek misanthrOpos hating mankind, from misein to hate + anthrOpos human being
Date: 1683
: a person who hates or distrusts mankind

o. nate (onate), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:31 (twenty years ago) link

Funny this, as a dancehall fan (and a pretty big one at that) I often find myself listening to the lyrics and thinking: "this record's a killer but why the hell did you have to say THAT?" However, it's very rarely about the misogynistic content, which I for some reason find easy to accept and get over, but homophobia which is rife within this genre and virulent to a degree unimaginable in any other, thus the misogyny is the lesser of two evils in that I can't think of a single dancehall record that calls for women to be beaten and set fire to, but I can name literally hundreds that detail such actions against homosexuals. I also had a conversation on ILM with someone on another thread about how I couldn't possibly find any merit in extreme right-wing bands like Burzum and Skrewdriver (Siegbran, I think off the top of my head), simply down to their beliefs forming such a huge part of their raison d'etre, yet I was litening to some filthy booty bass at the time!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:33 (twenty years ago) link

Misandry is a word whether or not its in some rub dictionary.

The real actual answer I think: it's much more generally accepted (in a pop-sociology way not necc. a scientific way) that there are basic differences between men and women, than it is that there are basic racial differences. So commenting - even negatively - on women as a group seems more acceptable. Also - I'd guess the average straight man is much more likely to find themselves in a one-on-one relationship with a woman (with potential antagonism) which is defined by their different genders than he is to find himself in a similar racial situation.

Or to put it much more simply - there are ALSO far far far more songs by men saying how wonderful a woman (or even 'women') is than there are songs by whites saying how wonderful blacks are.

Tico Tico is right - it's "misandry". Cf. The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:38 (twenty years ago) link

A lot of songs are sung from the perspective of a character rather than the vocalist him/herself. You couldn't accuse novelists of (necessarily) agreeing with their protagonists... Maybe in Under My Thumb the stones are making a point about the misogynist himself rather than about the woman...

And yeah I think it's andry not anthropy cos anthro- = human but andro- = man (By no means intended to be definitive answer though)

beanz (beanz), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:43 (twenty years ago) link

All the "bang bang batty bye bye" and (to a lesser extent) calls to "glass dem hoes" sentiments found in dancehall are pretty easy to ignore really. It's a different culture, yes these sentiments exist everywhere but i don't feel the need to question a largely poorly educated, impoverished and oppressed society's questionable opinons. How could I possibly understand?

Had her in the grass

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:01 (twenty years ago) link

And here's the godmother of rap, Lucille Bogan -- a regular Peaches of her time. This is from "Shave 'em Dry," recording around 1935:

I got nipples on my titties, big as the end of my thumb,
I got somethin' between my legs'll make a dead man come,
Oh daddy, baby won't you shave 'em dry?
Now, draw it out!
Want you to grind me baby, grind me until I cry.

Say I fucked all night, and all the night before baby,
And I feel just like I wanna, fuck some more,
Oh great God daddy,
Grind me honey and shave me dry,
And when you hear me holler baby, want you to shave it dry.

I got nipples on my titties, big as the end of my thumb,
Daddy you say that's the kind of 'em you want, and you can make 'em come,
Oh, daddy shave me dry,
And I'll give you somethin' baby, swear it'll make you cry.

I'm gon' turn back my mattress, and let you oil my springs,
I want you to grind me daddy, 'til the bell do ring,
Oh daddy, want you to shave 'em dry,
Oh great God daddy, if you can't shave 'em baby won't you try?

Now if fuckin' was the thing, that would take me to heaven,
I'd be fuckin' in the studio, till the clock strike eleven,
Oh daddy, daddy shave 'em dry,
I would fuck you baby, honey I'd make you cry.

Now your nuts hang down like a damn bell sapper,
And your dick stands up like a steeple,
Your goddam asshole stands open like a church door,
And the crabs walks in like people.
Ow, shit!
Ooh! Baby, won't you shave 'em dry

A big sow gets fat from eatin' corn,
And a pig gets fat from suckin',
Reason you see this whore, fat like I am,
Great God, I got fat from fuckin'.
Eeeeh! Shave 'em dry

My back is made of whalebone,
And my cock is made of brass,
And my fuckin' is made for workin' men's two dollars,
Great God, round to kiss my ass.
Oh! Whoo, daddy, shave 'em dry

men and women have been rotten to each other forever. it takes two to tango. hopefully, someday, there will be a more equal distribution of musical bile and more women will fight back aurally. we can always use more riot grrls and scrub-haters on the jukebox. women are plenty stong if not stronger than men, maybe they just don't feel the need to bash their shitty boyfriends as much? testosterone+guitar=little man with a gun in his hands and an axe to grind all over the solid sisters who wouldn't give him the time of day when he was joe dork in the garage and his sis was calling him lame-o for getting stains on the bedspread. men are pretty handy at crafting hooks outta their own humiliation and dumbassery though. it's a skill. jagger's 40 year al jolson impression doesn't seem to bother too many people.and his trademarked drooling tongue was always seen as kinda cute by most.

kate - if i may offer angela davis' answer to yr question: racism trumps patriarchy because the mechanisms which depersonalize minorities in the west (africans as labor units to be exploited, jews as scapegoats for holders of capital) also degender them.

in other words, while there are modes of repression that are reserved for women, it has generally been expedient for the white man to exploit nonwhite women as though they were men.

prof. davis offers this only by way of introducing the subject. i think she felt racist attitudes had been deconstructed (in the academy) to the point where thinkers could begin to take on patriarchy (hopefully we are reaching that point as music listeners).

vahid (vahid), Friday, 23 May 2003 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

Hey Jazzbo you must have the Yazzo comp Copulatin' Blues. Good stuff.

The anger & misogyny comes from fear, right? Men are being hurt by women and they're afraid of them. That's what these songs are about. The stakes are higher when love & lust are involved, which is why these pains are so deep & the resulting anger so intense. Comparing this stuff w/ racist lyrics doesn't quite work, I don't think, b/c the hurt that comes w/ love is universal.

You better hit her

u r afraid of the little cock-a-roaches, Kenan? aww

yo mark, your last sentence would indicate reciprocity; so women should be writing violent and abusive music about men. but they don't, so what's up?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:00 (twenty years ago) link

what's up?
vahid, are you only just now figuring out that, generally
speaking, men are bigger assholes than women?

And my cock is made of brass,

was Lucille Bogan a hermaphrodite?

how about:

wait - for his bitch to leave
miss trina got a trick up her sleeve
open up the door i walk straight in the house
put your man down and put my cock in his mouth

from trina's "hustling"

brian badword (badwords), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:52 (twenty years ago) link

Comparing this stuff w/ racist lyrics doesn't quite work, I don't think, b/c the hurt that comes w/ love is universal.

I would posit that most of the lyrics being discussed here have nothing to do with "the hurt that comes with love".

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 23 May 2003 22:00 (twenty years ago) link

badword - miss trina calling another woman 'bitch' is still misogyny.

sp - you could say that, or you could say our culture equips men with verbal weapons women don't have. just this week i heard dr. phil tell someone on oprah never to call men irresponsible, cause it feels the same as when a man calls a woman a bitch. what a load of bullshit!

vahid (vahid), Friday, 23 May 2003 22:04 (twenty years ago) link

I finally got "RC's Mom" by the Dead Milkmen last week on CD. Fucking brilliant.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 23 May 2003 23:15 (twenty years ago) link

what a load of bullshit!

No, I'll buy that one. Seeing as how it's men prescribed role to be breadwinners and such, and it's women's prescribed role to be nurturers and such, I can see an irresponsible-->bitch corollary. Your argument is that men feel no pain, because we control everything, and thus should shut the fuck up. And if we're talking corporate power, that's true. But not on a personal level. Not if you want to have a healthy heterosexual relationship.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 24 May 2003 00:03 (twenty years ago) link

vahid - i was more interested in the existance of trina's cock.

erg, existence.

Going the extra mile to use the word "nigger" = you are proving mediocre black comedians across the US correct.

because they do too?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 24 May 2003 00:28 (twenty years ago) link

Haha yes.

On a more serious note, if your point is that sexism is as bad as racism, it would probably be best if you didn't create a situation where it looks like you are equating bringing up the fact that misogyny exists with using the word "nigger" as that tends to cloud your point and cause people to not take you seriously.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 24 May 2003 00:51 (twenty years ago) link

Dan I hope Paul Mooney doesn't number amongst your "medicore black comedians" there

1x i was out busking with steve mccabe & billl vosburgh & fosby started singing "me & the dev" & after he said "i'm gonna beat my woman etc" steve interjected loudly "NO YOU ARENT", that really made that version of the song for me.

brian badword (badwords), Saturday, 24 May 2003 02:21 (twenty years ago) link

("cock " in old blues songs = "cunt" btw)
Actually...I've heard that in some scandahoovian language -- Swedish, I think -- "Cock" (or a word that sounds exactly like it) actually DOES MEAN "Cunt".
If there are any Swedes on the forum, please confirm or deny this...

"The hurt that comes with lust", more likely.

equating bringing up the fact that misogyny exists with using the word "nigger"

I'd equate these things, if only in the way that they'd be equally dumb things to do, unless you've got a good point coming soon after.

Don't know anything about Scandanavian languages, but I have read an account of how in Louisiana "coquille" (scallop) was used to refer to the female parts, and that this was later shortened to "cock."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 25 May 2003 00:05 (twenty years ago) link

Cock means rooster (just as pussy means cat) so it's no
more illogically applied to one sexual organ than the
other.

David Allen, Sunday, 25 May 2003 03:11 (twenty years ago) link

Is there a special word that means 'hatred of the Rolling Stones'? I want one.

Also, can someone give examples of AC/DC lyrics that display a hatred towrds women rather than just an objectification of them?
From memory they're mostly just schoolboy tales of bawdy girls that do to females what (I imagine) mills and boon novels do to males, that is, pretend they're something they're not.

mei (mei), Monday, 2 June 2003 13:57 (twenty years ago) link

Also, it's just occurred to me that AC/DC lyrics, porn for men etc etc etc feature (images of) women who are as interested in brief, 'meaningless' sexual encounters, motorbikes, porn, blow jobs etc. as men are.

To put it another way many men must be turned on by women who look female but act like men.

How gay is that?

mei (mei), Monday, 2 June 2003 14:00 (twenty years ago) link

two years pass...
On "Pushin' Too Hard" the Seeds were being conformist, misogynist jerks in some ways
-- Frank Kogan (edcasua...), November 10th, 2005.

Frank, I don't know if you'll see this, but "misogyny" means hatred of women in general and "Pushin' Too Hard" is a guy annoyed at one particular woman for bugging him.

The Crystals - He Hit Me (And it Felt Like a Kiss)

"...And when I told him I had been untrue
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
He hit me and I knew he loved me
Cause if he didn't care for me
I could have never made him mad
He hit me and I was glad"

teeth marks on your tongue (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 November 2005 07:17 (eighteen years ago) link

IMHO the word misogyny has been devalued, its definition changed from "psychopathic hatred of women" to "hostility towards any woman."

the way "misogyny" gets promiscously tossed around by pop music critics has everything to do w/this.
