Pip Dylan, Lonesome Pidgeon, King Cresote, James Yorkston? The aftermath of the scottish beta-band folkadelic explosion?

Sonny, Saturday, 29 March 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

some good stuff, obv James Yorkston, Lone Pigeon and King Creosote are all great, not so sure about some of the others. There's a cheapo compilation they put out last year sometime that was very enjoyable in parts..

a question for yancey - how and when did you hear of king cresote? i'm interested???? i interviewed him eons ago and thought nobody had heard of him??

doom-e, Thursday, 26 June 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Coming around to this stuff. The non-Lone Pigeon stuff wasn't messed up enough for my liking & it seemed just that *little* bit too slick at times, but keep hearing King Creosote & Pip Dylan being played in Rough Trade & it's growing on me.

Any recommendations?

I was sort of wondering the same thing a few days ago which prompted me to listen to some clips of Fence festivals on youtube. However, I'm still at a loss. Obviously King Creosote is the top of the tops but you've probably heard a lot of his stuff. Unfortunately his albums are usually half or more than a half filler type material - but the dude's got over 25 LPs and I'm sure I haven't heard even half of them all.

U.N.P.O.C.'s 'Fith Column' has some great moments.

James Yorkston has some moments but I wouldn't know what to suggest.

Basically I'm in the same boat as you. I'd like some suggestions as well. It doesn't help that Fence Collective doesn't have a music player on their site and I'd have to be really psyched to go through the myspaces of all the Fence bands.

i don't really like james yorkston past the first couple of albums, he got really really boring to me

i was really into this stuff at the time but haven't kept up with it at all, so i'm probably of no use here

He's all I've listened to since I turned 40.

I've been going through a Yorkston phase and pondering where to head next - might treat myself to a Alasdair Roberts album though this may be a step too far.

Shocked to discover that there is a Kode9 remix of a Yorkston track . . .

djh, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 08:17 (fifteen years ago)

Ali Roberts is never a step too far. The first couple of Yorkston albums are very good, but it's been diminishing returns since. Spoils is Roberts' best IMO: it's where he most successfully synthesises his influences, trad and modern, into something that's truly his own. The Wyrd Meme EP that followed it is also superb. He's at the peak of his powers. Can't wait to see what he does next.

Not strictly Fence but the Creosote/Hopkins album is very lovely indeed.

Are many of the tracks on "Diamond Mine" previously released, I wonder? "Bubble" appeared on the Cold Seeds album but aside from that, I'm not clear whether they are old tracks from Creosote's albums or just old tracks from his own archives?

It looks appealing (though part of me wonders if I'd enjoy just heading up there on a weekend there's nothing on, more).

It's worth finding Rozi Plain on the internet (did a nice version of The Lang Toun). Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou you can hear on the Heavenly Records website.

Re. Diamond Mine - I have been pondering the incongruity of it meaning vastly different things to each of its creators - I could imagine King Creosote realising its the best thing he's ever done, with a thought that he might never top it and for Hopkins it being just one of many projects with his name attached.

djh, Monday, 25 April 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

It's like Creosote's slower, less exciting stuff but with better production than normal. Creosote is much better when he is in a pop mode. Even his slower stuff is better when he is in a pop mode.

Creosote has a lot of slower stuff for what it's worth.

Still loving this.

Unusually, it's not making me want to particularly investigate either of their other non-collaborative recordings.

Does "Diamond Mine" stand the remotest chance of winning the Mercury?

djh, Monday, 18 July 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

Much as I hate the idea of sit-down gigs, I'm psyched about seeing them at the Southbank in September.
