god, we are so awesome:

"Libra is the only inanimate sign of the zodiac, all the others representing either humans or animals. Many modern astrologers regard it as the most desirable of zodiacal types because it represents the zenith of the year, the high point of the seasons, when the harvest of all the hard work of the spring is reaped. There is a mellowness and sense of relaxation in the air as mankind enjoys the last of the summer sun and the fruits of his toil. Librans too are among the most civilized of the twelve zodiacal characters and are often good looking. They have elegance, charm and good taste, are naturally kind, very gentle, and lovers of beauty, harmony (both in music and social living) and the pleasures that these bring."

tbf a lot of astrology is ego-stroking/telling people what they want to hear about themselves

Hat Trick Swayze (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 22:24 (fourteen years ago) link

you don't say!

This planetary combo makes for people who are motivated, penetrating and aware. Scorpions don't miss much, since they are highly attuned to the vibrations of others. They are intuitive, probing and very focused on knowing who's who and what's what. Scorpions can lose their temper (and even become vengeful) when someone gets in their way, so it's best to give them plenty of room. Remember, they're unafraid, and a loss today simply means an opportunity for victory tomorrow.

more: is it ego-stroking or telling me I'm an asshole?

be aware that these folks are clever, perceptive and always in the mix. Their ability to see into things can sometimes be a curse for Scorpions, however, since they can take an insignificant matter and turn it into a huge slight. Beware the Scorpion who feels crossed! These folks can turn vindictive in no time flat. Luckily, once Scorpions catch their breath, they will return to their usual determined and loyal (albeit strong-willed) ways.

eh, you know I think you'll find that the majority of astrology begins with detailing a person's positive attributes to get them all feeling great about themselves and then usually throws in some objective-sounding "but if carried to extremes..." kind of finger-wagging language at the end - which both legitimizes the astrologer in the subject's eyes and enables the subject to acknowledge their faults in a magnanimous way...

tylerw, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 22:43 (fourteen years ago) link

xp - the majority does this, indeed, however, looking at the descriptions for other signs, there's more "but if carried to extremes ..." language, as opposed to "by nature, you're a vindictive asshole."

ahem, if you go to astro.com, you can get more exacting (as well as contradictory) readings. for me:

The report was generated with the following birth data: male, born on 4 October 1984 at 2:37 am in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Your sun sign is Libra. This is the sign in which the Sun is in your birth chart. Your Ascendant is in Leo, and your Moon is in Aquarius.
Partner references which may occur in the text are set for a relationship with a woman.

Sun in Libra, Moon in Aquarius
These astrological positions may combine to provide you with a sunny disposition. Because you are so much at peace with yourself, you direct your thoughts toward understanding the entire human race.
You are the humanist par excellence - equality, liberty, and fraternity" is your motto, and this is not just a phrase for you. You dislike pomp, artificiality and privilege, and are drawn to what is modest, simple and natural in life. The total picture is of an extremely well-integrated individual. You probably had a happy youth and as a result will enjoy many healthy relationships. In love you play the role of a gardener, tending to the needs of your love partner.

Ascendant in Leo, Sun in the Third House
At the time of your birth the zodiacal sign of Leo was ascending in the horizon. Its ruler the Sun is located in the third house.
People with Leo in the Ascendant seem to possess a flair for the life of nobility and regality. Your life will be in many ways influenced by decisions you make that have been motivated by your pride, desire for power, for authority, and your need to convince others of your courage.
In life you will act with a rather frank, generous, and amiable disposition. The course of events in your life will unfold themselves swiftly, and a life full of chance and circumstances will be the outcome of your desire to rule, to organize, to hold the keys of authority. You should be aware that as a result of overly strong impulses there is the danger of failures and upsets in life. You will be generally regarded as an amiable, sincere and generous person who, however, has much pride and sensitivity. Egocentricity is one of the prices of being born with the Ascendant sign of Leo. Another aspect of this zodiacal sign is that your personality becomes excessively charged with passion and sexual desire. On the other hand, these zodiacal signs grant in life a large dose of vitality as well as a fine physical shape and a strong, healthy constitution.
Willpower is a characteristic of your personality. You seek opportunities and when you find them you go to it, using both your mind and your emotions to strive for success with zeal and determination. You are very self-assured and you implement ideas with a self- assurance that lets nothing get in your way of success.
It would be beneficial to you, however, if you were not so candid and frank and if you did not expect others to act and feel as you do.
Leo will grant you very sincere and affectionate relationships in which you desire to bring happiness and an overall feeling of charitable spirit and warmth to your loved one. In your sexual relationships you appear as happy, strong, playful and even a little innocent.
You will always act better as a leader than a subordinate.
This position indicates a generous though proud mind, with ambitious inclinations. In all intellectual endeavors you are firm and confident, always aiming at total success and desirous of honor and fame through your intellectual endeavors. You have a desire to help others by means of the application of your knowledge. Your mind can be inventive, constructive, profound, commanding respect, and even religious or philosophical.
You must be careful not to become too proud or arrogant or to demonstrate an overly ambitious nature.

and etc etc. goes into even more detail.

I did this ... I got some really thrilling results:

"your emotions are long-lasting, but you also punish yourself with equal intensity"
"Impulsive, critical, despising mean or dubious acts, you will create many excellent friendships but also important enemies."
'There is a tendency to become involved in wars and conflicts, both public and personal."
"you are trying too hard to be liked; you would be more respected if you were more sincere and less conniving"
"Although you have a mind of your own, you probably are not fully prepared to accept responsibility for your actions. "

It also said that I was good in bed and have a successful marriage to a proud and dignified individual.

all in all - it was the pretty standard, big duh, narrative: if you work hard, respect people, and are open and honest, you will be successful; if you don't, you will be bitter and a fuck up.

I'm a Capricorn and nothing like one but I generally think astrology is a load of shit anyway. Man, this thread/life was making me feel really old for a while earlier but then I got carded today and the clerk didn't believe the ID was mine so that was sweet. I don't care if he was BSing me it was still awesome.

totally over the top david axelrod/cannonball adderley production.
oh, and i'm aquarius which just happens to be one of the albums highlights with insane guitars over a loose 70s funk jam groove.
a brilliant brilliant album.
