This is only her second track/single. The first ("Fool") was a dead ringer for Sade, but this is excellent walking at dusk music.

Not my summer jams but apparently everyone else's... here comes the reggaeton brigade:

Danny Ocean - Me Rehuso
Maluma - Felices los 4
Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee - Despacito

Maybe not add them to the playlist just acknowledging what's huge this summer in spanish speaking countries.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 22 May 2017 16:48 (six years ago) link

My actual summer jams:

Turbotito - Cançao para Laia
Nilufer Yanya - Golden Cage
Blende - Back to Summertime (This Soft Machine remix)
Lord Echo - The Sweetest Meditation

Support the Orgone and Sacred Paws as well.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Friday, 26 May 2017 23:07 (six years ago) link

god help me but i really like the calvin harris/future/Khalid single "rollin"

https://open.spotify.com/track/3FDrI0FLKzrYQiWxPhqV2W

I hadn't cared much about Harris before but the three songs released by him, although a bit homogenic in their palette, are amazing. Definitely buying that one when it comes out.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Sunday, 28 May 2017 16:19 (six years ago) link

i hate harris on general principle but that song smells like a summer hit to me

billstevejim, Monday, 29 May 2017 06:10 (six years ago) link

being completely disconnected from the current mainstream, I'm glad this thread exists but so far, none of the tracks has made a big impression on me.
until "Rollin", which is pretty cool and DOES have a cool summer vibe (something g-funkish too). I'm not sure it's a great SONG, though.
I'll have to listen to it more.

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 29 May 2017 13:39 (six years ago) link

Listen to Slide and Heatstroke by Calvin Harris. You might like them better and it seems he's doing a full album of g-funk inspired jams.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 29 May 2017 14:13 (six years ago) link

I actually think Rollin is my least favorite of the three singles so far.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 29 May 2017 14:17 (six years ago) link

ok, I will check these out. thanks !

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 29 May 2017 14:21 (six years ago) link

Also I know he's not liked at all over here but this one seems to be a decent summer hit and I love it if only for the moodymann sample:

Drake - Passionfruit.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 29 May 2017 14:27 (six years ago) link

oh yes, that one I know and like a lot !
it would be a perfect summer hit imo but I'm not sure it's a hit so far (or has even been released as a single) ?

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 29 May 2017 14:33 (six years ago) link

Afaik it's huge in spotify which seems to be the easiest global metric to use nowadays.

On the US charts it peaked in 8. I'm starting to hear it in Mexico... I don't think it will have the same impact over here as One Dance did but I like it better. One Dance had that syncopated reggaeton/dancehall beat which latin audiences go crazy for which explains its success over here... Passionfruit's backing track is more like lush house and it's overall a more subtle song.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 29 May 2017 14:41 (six years ago) link

hum. I like both but I might prefer One Dance as a summer jam (at a party). Passionfruit has something more subtle indeed (and sad, I might add), a bit like Hold On. More of an after party vibe !

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 29 May 2017 14:46 (six years ago) link

Wow Heatstroke is great !
That's what I'm talking about !

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 29 May 2017 15:25 (six years ago) link

Yeah that might be the best for me so far. Might as well add it to the playlist.

Calvin harris - Heatstroke

so these Calvin Harris singles are pretty strong.
I find "Heatstroke" is the catchiest but "Slide" and "Rollin" have a great groove.
It's quite impressive to release 3 singles of that level prior to the album.
He seems set to rule the summer !

AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 13:06 (six years ago) link

aw ok, apparently that's nothing new for him...

Harris currently holds the record for the most top 10 songs from one studio album on the UK Singles Chart with nine top 10 entries, surpassing Michael Jackson. In October 2014, he became the first artist to place three songs simultaneously on the top 10 of Billboard's Dance/Electronic Songs chart

eheh, yeah, although I didn't really know him before this thread (as I said, I'm disconnected from the mainstream ! I'm even surprised to find out it's a brit making these rnb songs...), I sense there might be something VERY not cool in enjoying stuff by him...
but what can I say, these 3 tracks ARE good !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 08:22 (six years ago) link

Might as well also give my apology: As I said before I haven't liked anything by Calvin Harris prior to these singles. I'm not mindblown about them but him suddenly doing this breezy g-funk found out of nowhere is a nice surprise and I really like that sound it still hasn't beaten to death in my ears (had he even hinted at it before? I don't remember any of his previous singles sounding like this)

I'll have to admit he's really good at using his guest spots in every single I've heard of him tho even the annoying ones.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 13:36 (six years ago) link

he has some ok filter house tunes, and 'we found love' is one of the best songs ever. he'll probably go to heaven.

Excuse moi but I just heard despacito for the first time today and had to google it to see if it wasn't a straight up cover of el perdon by nicky jam?????? Which cannot be a particularly obscure song since I found it on one of Spotify's top charts playlist a year or two ago.

musically, Sunday, 4 June 2017 23:12 (six years ago) link

Srsly listen to it and tell me

https://youtu.be/hXI8RQYC36Q

musically, Sunday, 4 June 2017 23:14 (six years ago) link

Is Despacito one of the first reggaeton songs you've heard?

El perdon was also a very popular reggaeton song last year featuring Enrique Iglesias (400M plays in spotify). It doesn't sound like despacito at all, at least for me... it's more that mostly all reggaeton sounds similar because it's very limited in what it can do with its beat and producers are very lazy to do something creative with it.

Listen to the top songs by Maluma or Zion & Lennox or J Balvin and you'll probably think they also sound like Despacito.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 5 June 2017 15:35 (six years ago) link

That's kind of my problem with reggaeton. Does wonders for a latin party but it's generic to the point where every new reggaeton hit replaced the last one.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 5 June 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

first time i heard "el perdon" i thought it was a remix of enrique's "bailando" b/c some of its lines sound so similar in melody and cadence

dyl, Monday, 5 June 2017 16:45 (six years ago) link

I'm no reggaeton expert but I listen to whatever makes it to the chart roundup playlists/global streaming charts/etc, I've never thought that two songs sounded so damn alike until these two though

now that I'm typing this I remember I was in Miami a few weeks ago and a song came on the radio at the restaurant and everyone was jamming to it and I thought "this song sounds a hell of a lot like el perdon" and figured it was some remix or something, obvs it must have been despacito and I had no clue

I prefer the tough, driving sound of that track over the kind I hear on Despacito, which sounds like a track designed by committee to appeal to US pop audiences

so we're almost in july : is one of these THE summer jam ?
I think the one I've heard the most at random places might be the C. Harris/F.Ocean but even that one doesn't seem to be that big and ubiquitous... very far from the "Get Lucky"/"Blurred Lines"/"Uptown Funk" level !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 08:08 (six years ago) link

Despacito and Shape of You are the big ones over here but both have been around since January so I don't know if they can qualify as Summer jams... I've listened to them so much in parties at this point that it feels like they've been around for years.

The persistence of "Despacito" -- still #1 -- is . I wouldn't have expected a crossover reggaeton smash in 2017, especially one that's so objectively bland. I'd love to hot-take connect it to something, but I guess all I can come up with is that it's interesting we have a bilingual hit in the summer of Trump.

Meant to say the persistence is impressive...

YES to all of these. I feel like the first and the last are constantly in my Youtube recommendations (which is always a good thing) have they been featured in a high-profile mix or something recently that I've forgotten about or missed?

xp - I work in commercial radio (which is on in the background all day) and have a general aversion/disinterest to the majority of stuff that gets played on there. But that one kept coming on and it tickled my interest. I had no idea who was behind it, but I love that disco-reggae sound as any fule kno. Perry is bearable on this one and it's a different style for most of these guys.
