Amorf3, the collaboration between SIT and pianist Mischa Blanos still unreleased, some time later this year. Still no official clips of it, but here's a couple of clips of it out in the wild last year

the late great, Thursday, 19 January 2017 19:25 (seven years ago) link

I really like The Black Madonna as a force within dance music and her presence feels vital when so much of the culture is being dominated by white straight men. But I wish I liked her music as much as I like her politics.

what's not to like about super competent disco edits?

the late great, Thursday, 19 January 2017 22:11 (seven years ago) link

I mean in theory I like the idea of something that sounds like "He Is The Voice..." but it comes off a little too studied and forced. Compared to something like eg Floorplan's "Tell You No Lie" there's a lack of a certain kind of ramshackle energy.

"Exodus" is the one that really leaves me cold, I think it manages to lose everything that makes the source material so joyful and uplifting.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 19 January 2017 22:33 (seven years ago) link

yeah, longer 'he is the voice' goes on the more its ersatz inexpertise comes thru

r|t|c, Thursday, 19 January 2017 23:03 (seven years ago) link

i really liked "exodus"!

my hands-down favorite BM track is "we don't need no music" though

was the RA discussion about the black madonna's name? have long thought it was a dubious choice. i remember when i first heard of her squinting at photos thinking "well...maybe she's just very light-skinned...?"

lex pretend, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:46 (seven years ago) link

has an ra comment thread ever been that progressive, ime the discourse is usually at the level of a shitty subreddit

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 23 January 2017 19:48 (seven years ago) link

some of the discussion was about her name, some of it was about whether she was an obnoxious person (i.e. is she too poltiical for her own good) and some of it was along the lines of this thread (are her tracks good pastiche or bad pastiche)

not sure why the thread was locked actually since it seemed pretty tame, i imagine there must have been some more offensive comments that got deleted

the late great, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:54 (seven years ago) link

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Madonna

according to a professor of medieval art history i know (my sister) the question of whether the black madonna actually represents a black person has been in active debate for more than 500 years

so i guess i am willing to give her a pass?

I was going to make an attempt to describe the discussion level, and this is pretty much perfect

the comments griping about chicago having better djs that aren't booked, etc, always straddles the line between a possible real complaint and people just making random accusations

it's like, is the commenter actually part of this scene or a dj and has failed to get booked at smart bar, or do they know someone who has been rejected, or are they just pissed because the black madonna gets booked other places instead of whatever dj they want to see

it reminds me of the classic complaints on local places where someone would ask "why are you booking this local guy again and not <insert international superstar dj>??"

mh ๐Ÿ˜, Monday, 23 January 2017 20:55 (seven years ago) link

like some street festival a decade ago booked talent from outside town using whatever ad money they got from the local scion car dealership and someone is asking why they didn't get tiesto

I'll give them credit, they did get some reasonable names over the years, but there was a hard pivot from "90s d&b hangover" to "edm enthusiast" in their target audience

Sadly Planet Giegling didn't visit my town, but there are a couple of radio shows they've done while on tour, incl. a spot on Dublab and RBMA radio (the file for the latter mix isn't online on their site yet).

No tracklist for this one, but the RBMA appears to have lots of unreleased (upcoming?) things on it so I'm hopeful the same goes for Dublab.

Liking a lot more tracks from this thread this year than I did last year, and trying to figure out why (me? changes in musical trends? changes in who is posting what?), but I'm happy about it. Are the cognoscenti feeling this is an especially good year for house, or not really?

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 24 April 2017 04:28 (six years ago) link

not particularly

the late great, Monday, 24 April 2017 04:44 (six years ago) link

Depends what it is that you like?

I don't think its an especially good year for house records at all! though there have been some stellar mixes which have put a spring in a step and a hope in a heart, but a lot of those records I don't know what they are - they might be old they might be new.

saer, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 09:42 (six years ago) link

A lot of the good records from other years have had more time to emerge from the undergrowth! Not every one is out on the beach waving their ice cones around on day one

saer, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 09:47 (six years ago) link

It could just be that I'm more receptive to it.

I don't feel too confident talking about the finer genre distinctions within house. I know I don't care for most jackin house. I'm sort of UK garage-centric but like a lot of deep house (but that also leaves a lot I don't like).

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 15:56 (six years ago) link

I dont know anything about genre distinctions and never talk about them, I only like records and also feeling genial

saer, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 16:02 (six years ago) link

I'm being somewhat disingenuous - there are a couple of genre distinctions i adhere to. there are miscreants, but not all miscreants are the same, some are proper meat pie and others are more smoking behind the bikesheds. Those share some dna with cabin in the woods records but those have to be used sparingly, same as with canal dredgers - a little goes a long way. Then there are the convivial cap doffers, meadow vibes, you can play them over the tannoy at boundary park still today. and some records are just proper deckchair. Just a matter of time before bank holiday bill and the charnock richard boys turn up. this is what my record bag looks like

generally a mix of deckchair and miscreant is good but dont overthink it or you might miss your stop!

saer, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 16:20 (six years ago) link

That said unfortunately most records are none of these things and are exercises in drudgery or a painful attack on the senses from people who would have been better off bullying children

Both recent hits in my town. Having said that there is plenty to avoid! Had the displeasure of seeing Jackmaster at Fabric this morning...

mmmm, Sunday, 30 April 2017 13:23 (six years ago) link

I'm not big on the idea of a year being good or bad for music. Seems like it has everything to do with what you happen to be exposed to, in relation to your tastes, and your tastes in relation to external factors like music discourse and age, and very little to do with the year itself. I realize this is implicit, but I still think it's annoying when people complain about the year when it's like, don't blame the calendar for your inability to find good records.

This is technically 2016, but from the last 12 months. It's a really nice ep: https://soundcloud.com/helena_label/sets/aleks-future-dialect-ep

I really like that EP, we've been overdue a Metro Area revival

hehe - been trying to place who it reminds me of and there are certainly shades of metro area. also the detroit experiment. one of those great records where you listen to 15 seconds and the sound is so rich you know you're buying it, but after that each track just flows in its own way.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Sunday, 14 May 2017 21:16 (six years ago) link

some stuff I've been feeling lately:

Francis Inferno Orchestra - Oasis (Celestial Body Mix). Dreamy breakbeat house that goes well with that Young Marco Italian house compilation.

Telephones - DTMF (Call Super Remix). Skippy house with a breakdown of shimmering chords, warped string pads and what sounds like a muted sample of a lorry reversing.

Jamie Lidell - When I Come Back Round (Matthew Herbert's Long Night Dub). Heads-down swirling deep house that makes me think of the mid 00s when Kompakt and Villalobos were still building their reputations, and not even Lidell's best Jamiroquai impression can spoil it.

Michael Mayer & Joe Goddard - For You (DJ Koze Mbira Mix). Marred by indie mumbling but the kind of euphoric wistfulness that Koze excels at.

Space Dimension Controller - Exostack. To me this sounds like an early rave producer trying to make a classy disco track.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 14 May 2017 21:46 (six years ago) link

a few more

Oxia - Domino (Robag's Lasika Cafa Nb Remix). I don't hear anything in this that sounds like the original, but it sounds like Robag Wruhme at his usual standard.

Lord Of The Isles - Sunrise 89. This would be ambient house if it wasn't for the menacing tone in the low end. The EP this is from is really good, I like it more than the album he released.

Fred P - 6am. All three tracks on Instinctive Rhythms are good but this is my favourite - thumping tech-house with hooks and sounds sharpening in and out of focus.

Isolee - Pisco. Does anyone still think about that amazing My My album from a decade ago?

Baba Stiltz - Are You Mad? Cause I'm Not Mad... A bassline indebted to "French Kiss" with warm chords.

I'm really shook by the sudden death of Marcus Kaye / Trevino. I'm not really a DnB guy, so can't talk to his Marcus Intalex stuff, but I sincerely think he was behind a lot of the most exciting techno I'd heard in the 2010s ("Backtracking" for instance, is one of my favourite recent techno tracks), and was looking forward to the second part of his Front/Back album.

Anyways, very sad. R.I.P.

if you want to hear what the Bicep album is gonna sound like, join the Facebook group "The Identification Of Music." In theory its set up for clubbers to share their expertise and knowledge and help people identify tracks they've heard, but in actuality it's obnoxious lads posting grainy footage of unreleased Bicep, and while it often sounds good, the attitude and culture around that particularly section of dance music fans makes me feel disengaged and uninterested. It's a terrible thing to be put off listening to something by its fans but I can't help it.

No way, that's a real shame.

I'm listening to this survey Spotify mix from the label - https://open.spotify.com/user/1080pcollection/playlist/4qAgghzz4x2KeNFQ5UJyfC - I was sort of following their stuff at a distance, but really, it's an amazing label imo! I guess great labels can do a good job of capturing a sound and scene, and it seems like this really does it for the stoner retro-house scene in Vancouver, the graphic design is actually a big part of that too - sorta template Tumblr aesthetics...

Also surprised at the jungle-style beats on some of these releases, I know some showed up on ILM threads, but there's quite a vibe around ambient early d'n'b and jungle that is really a sweet spot.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 20 July 2017 18:34 (six years ago) link

i liked some of the stuff on the label, feel like pacific rhythm has a p similar aesthetic if you like the vancouver thing. i'm sorta prejudiced against the scene in general for really petty reasons and never go to to any nights here.

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 20 July 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link

ya it was a great lil label, especially the last coupla years; rip

i'm sorta prejudiced against the scene in general for really petty reasons and never go to to any nights here.

what petty reasons?? when i was in vancouvar a friend brought me to his studio in Deep Blue and later to a Pacific Rhythms party, i felt a frosty vibe from the ppl he introduced me too (tho I've heard that's just what ppl are like there) esp the kids at the studio all had that preppy normcore look which was kinda off-putting

flopson, Thursday, 20 July 2017 20:47 (six years ago) link

A lot of people in Van are stuck in their own bubble and seem pretty unapproachable. There's good people of course, but I would hesitate to call it a friendly city

Week of Wonders (Ross), Thursday, 20 July 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link

im moving there in 3 weeks forever :'(

flopson, Thursday, 20 July 2017 20:54 (six years ago) link

my petty reasons are that I've met some people who are sort of that scene-adjacent and while these people were nice enough the vibe is definitely art-school normcore middle-class hipster, used to be in an indie band, or in a noise group, and then discovered dance music a few years ago sort of thing. vancouver nights are definitely frosty too. now i should probably just get the stick out my ass and go and try and have a good time but i think I've perhaps overly-romanticized the (imo fantastic) dance music culture of where I'm from - glasgow - and that's getting in my way of just embracing what's around me now and i am dumb

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 20 July 2017 20:59 (six years ago) link

tl;dr - vancouver dance music isn't real enough for the authenticity boy

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 20 July 2017 21:00 (six years ago) link

I'm iffy about Vancouver house for *extremely* petty reasons: I was once painfully rejected by someone that's friends with the Mood Hut guys and introduced me to them before they went big. I also think a lot of that music is pretty overrated, perhaps because it's received a lot of nepotistic hype via Andrew Ryce at Resident Advisor, who tends to consistently give glowing reviews to what I think are quite average records from people from Vancouver/his friends/whoever. Maybe I'm being paranoid (I don't think it's deliberate aggrandizement but it has a touch of conflict of interest) but I've gotten to the point where I just pass over his reviews of Mood Hut/Pacific Rhythm/etc records.

I miss posting here but I so rarely buy records from the present year that aren't already covered on places like RA. The only things I've got worth mentioning are Sven Weisemann - Separate Paths (https://svenweisemann.bandcamp.com/album/separate-paths-ep), a solid EP on Delsin which sounds exactly what a solid EP on Delsin would sound like, and Niro - It Takes Two (https://soundcloud.com/padsdiscs/sets/niro-it-takes-two-pads002), a kind of fun ep of quirky house.

i stopped reading RA or any music crit other than writers that also post here before the vancouver thing got rolling. i didn't know RA hyped them up, i still associate RA with minimal, techno, deep house, and whatever english people are making now, post-bass music maybe. if anything i would've guessed RA was skeptical of vancouver and their ilk

I know f all about "vancouver house" (never exactly been a dance music guy i guess) but shit I've lived in the van my whole life and I get a kick out of the fact that that scene exists because there really isn't much of a musical legacy here, or many big current artists either :(

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Saturday, 5 August 2017 21:26 (six years ago) link

some bits and pieces I've been enjoying lately:

Gerd Janson & Shan - Surrender - filtered disco house hasn't ever really gone away but I've noticed in the past few months there's a lot of releases that sound like that 1997 sound of tough kicks and ecstatic samples and this is a personal favourite.

Bullion - Blue Pedro - this is really cheesy, like something off that disappointing Todd Terje album, but I actually love this because it's so shameless - it's the Blue Peter theme done as arpeggiated disco.

Andras - Vinyl Only - all three tracks from this are great in a retro, analogue way.

Moscoman - Big Jack Arbon - stompy percussion which turns into big glassy melodies.

Morgan Geist - Ocgc - pristine disco as always, but I think the Megaprojects series has let Geist show a more maximalist, anthemic side.

Radio slave - Children Of The E (KiNK SP1200 Remix) - every single time I go out just now I hear his remix of Unit 2's "Sunshine" which is obvious and devastating but I think this is actually the best thing KiNK has done recently.

Rico Puestel - If I'd Care More - shiny Ibiza techno, the highlight from Cocoon Compilation Q, which is better than the 17th release in a chain of compilations should be.

Dark Sky - Kilter - rumbling wompy bass from Modeselektor associates.

Riva Starr - Another Race - Riva Starr have been very prolific and I've never really paid any attention but I saw a video of Steffi playing this at Glastonbury and it sounded excellent - tech-house that sounds like hi-nrg italo with lots of trippy effects.

Peverelist - Still Early - undulating sunrise techno, feels like a natural successor to "Clunk Click Every Trip" which is now scarily nine years old.

Mosca - Peyote Sitch - Livity Sound have a good few ones out just now from Forest West Drive and Hodge as well as the Peverelist album but I really like the slightness of this, the pitched cowbell melody anchoring the weird sounds around it.

Bufiman - Peace Moves (DJ Normal 4 Ever Armstice Remix) - breakbeats and whistles and deep chords.

Mallard - Untitled (Breaks) & Earth Boys - Trail Mix - heard both of these on recent Test Pressing mixes on NTS. Lumping them together because they both do the same thing, which I guess would be lush, balearic rave.

just read there is a new Terrence Dixon album in July. I'm really up for that.

Yep, it's kind of amazing and bizarre. The tracks are all pretty short too -- this is a triple LP that never even came close to outstaying its welcome. Spectral, dissonant, trippy, hypnotic.

map, Sunday, 15 October 2017 06:41 (six years ago) link

it reminds me of the good kompakt total compilations in terms of overall quality. also something about the sound and its relationship to techno reminds me of kompakt's relationship to minimal house. it sharpens and expands it.

map, Sunday, 15 October 2017 06:48 (six years ago) link

an example is "perdita" by jay clarke, which is a really good minimal wave / punk track dressed in the finest techno outerwear.

map, Sunday, 15 October 2017 06:52 (six years ago) link

lots of gorgeousness and distilled funkiness going on. there's something about a good techno track that is basically funky imo. it's hard to my finger on it, like it's not just a good 808 clave pattern, it can be how the frequencies of everything land. an example of not-funky and kind of bad techno is this new atomTM release. the samples sounded promising but there's just no sense of funk at all, the tracks are ponderous and overstuffed and they lose their impact and fall flat imo.

the late great, Monday, 4 December 2017 19:22 (six years ago) link

The dj seinfeld album has some good tracks but I really don't get that deliberately shitty production style, always find it borderline obnoxious

i know kore-eda (or something), Monday, 4 December 2017 20:17 (six years ago) link

i have a couple dozen "lo fi house" records and while i like listening to them, i think a lot of people don't realize (and probably don't care) how terrible these tracks sound on a real system and how difficult that production style makes mixing w/ vinyl

the late great, Monday, 4 December 2017 20:22 (six years ago) link

Like, one of house music's best features is its functionality and that function is to sound great on the dancefloor. To deliberately make a track sound like shit just seems like hipster fetishism at best

i know kore-eda (or something), Monday, 4 December 2017 20:22 (six years ago) link

in my experience it takes more effort to make something sound that lo-fi

boxedjoy, Monday, 4 December 2017 20:36 (six years ago) link

I'd be up for a lo-fi house thread. I hear the lo-fi aspect but to say it sounds "shit", can't agree there (not with the DJ Seinfeld album at least).

bah essentialism
ilx has been through all this before on the hipster house thread surely, but i think maybe certain 'raw' house/tech visions of detroit/chicago led to the extreme lofi these guys are proffering, but yeah these new tracks probably don't have enough BOUNCE/dynamic range to rock hips adequately... these people probably are hipsters that like early industrial music and stuff though..
