like, lots of stuff from the past can inspire the "how different the world then seems" sentiments, but everything about this is from another planet. the Bobby Kennedy biopic advertised in the first commercial break. the opening sequence. the actual game play.

the host intimating that our young contestants might have been able to recognize a tune that "was revived recently by Bobby Vinton"...in 1978

this comment from YouTube user T. Schofield, who seems to have been affiliated with the show:

In this episode, Wednesday, July 12, 1978 was the tape date.

When this show was taped, it was the third complete week of six of summer school for the non-SLDC version & school lunch menu courtesy of the Glendora Unified School District: Crushed Ground Beef and Gravy, Whipped Potatoes, Vegetable Dippers w/Peanut Butter, Hot Roll w/Butter, Orange Pieces.
Vegetable Dippers are Celery Sticks.

The scat that the two vocalists sing during the intro is p much perfect.

There does seem to be a little almost Lynchian surrealism generated by one of the contestants being a grocery clerk:

"You're a grocery clerk, huh? We'll check ya out during the show."

"I just, uh, put the stock on the shelf...if it falls off, I put it back up."

Match Game has a YT channel with a ton of episodes, all of which seemingly featuring a MASH cast member.

I love 70s game show prizes (I wanted 'em all), I love that Mike's 'driving home' (everybody's happy), I love Jeanne putting hands on her hips & emoting 'I'm gonna win that piano' to the cameras (I thought she was super foxy), and I love interlocking Zeros in money figure graphics (all doom and gloom economy websites need to adopt this standard now).

Did the host really give the contestants one thousand bucks in $100 bills that they then just put in their pockets? Did they not just get mugged on their way out of the studio?

I'll bet 100 bux they were traveller's checks - that sponsor placement was too damned sweet.

six years pass...

this new version of the show is ridiculously easy.

like they get such obvious clues for the "I can name that tune in xx notes" part that everybody says they only need one note cos the clue will literally be stuff like "a baby is all that was on this lady's mind in 1992".

I wanna get on this show cos I can pay off all of my student debt

apparently, it is filmed in Australia, and all of the contestants are American expats?

yeah, that's how they get away with a studio audience during a pandemic

jaymc, Friday, 22 January 2021 22:40 (three years ago) link

I assumed they were older eps sitting in a can for a year or something. But this makes sense

One of the worst trivia nights I went to was a guy just playing songs off his laptop, and whoever among the ~50 people at the bar shouted out the name of the song first (up to the host to decide) got a point for their team. we left pretty quickly
