Part 3, Contributions as Other Than Lead Artist

This was a bit of a hash, and I don't blame anyone who declined to vote in it, but after Tracks and Productions, I thought there needed to be a catch-all where Eno's involvement on instruments and/or treatments was enough to lift the work to "the next level," to be totally clichéd about it. In other words, a category where Bowie's Berlin Trilogy could mop up.

Nuts, didn't vote

John cale's "gun" better make this 15

One other reason I didn't/couldn't vote is that there is very little with Eno's name on it that I do not like. I'd have to whittle down hundreds of tracks, including not just from solo albums which I like in their entirety, but things like Cale's Island albums or U2's albums or James albums or Bowie albums or Talking Heads albums that I like in their entirety, too. It was just impossible.

Apropos African Night Flight, during a brief visit to Berlin last weekend I managed to attend the Bowie exhibition of Victoria and Albert Museum fame not once but twice and was especially delighted by the Berlin-section they tacked on at the end of the default stuff. Among the exhibits were Bowie's old flat key and several Die-Brücke-paintings but a really nice addition was the briefcase EMS Synthi AKS on display, though I doubt it was the original Eno one: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/959470/_2014-07-05-17.24.28.jpg

Worth reminding, since they are on their way, that both "Heroes" and "Once in a Lifetime," arguably the best two songs from each respective act, are formal Eno co-writes. I recall a radio piece several years ago about the latter, and apparently the chorus was all Eno. The song as conceived by Byrne/the band was just basically the static A section, over and over.

Oh snap, here it is, I think! Typically fascinating Eno stuff pops up around the four-minute mark.

Hmmm, nothing against this top 16 at all (voted for three of them) but slightly surprised at the absence of "Take Me To The River". As I recall, it was Brian's idea to slow the song right down and then use the extra space created to create that 'underwater' feel to the track using his bag of production tricks.

Cool list!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 18:15 (nine years ago) link

I geeked out looking at credits to see which tracks were the most Enoised, hence my high placings for Lemon (keyboards and backing vocals) and Low side two. Can't argue with the top two.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 18:30 (nine years ago) link

I've been long fascinated by the making-of method behind both James' "Wah Wah" and "Zooropa:" the band and engineer in one studio, and Eno in his own, second studio, generally messing with things.

Another fave Eno studio story. Apparently one of his mixing methods is to keep some of the tracks off-kilter, bits mixed too low, or too loud, or too hot or too generally not correct, to get the right mix of wrong sounds in there. There was one track during the making of "The Joshua Tree" that Eno had mixed all screwy, so much so that when the engineer showed up he thought it was a mistake and made sure all the levels were right and proper, like a good engineer. Then Eno comes back from tea or whatever, sees what he's done, and yells at him never to mess around with his mess, basically.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 18:36 (nine years ago) link

That engineer must have been a noob to not know Eno's rep for experimentation by 1986.

Lemon was my number one and is an incredible song. I know everyone has made their mind up about U2 at this point but that song really stands out in their back catalogue as being totally unique. Shame they've never managed to get that level of greatness (or even come close) again.

Apollo is my favorite ambient Eno after DM, particularly the second side. I count maybe one treacly moment.

Also, suddenly recalled Eno contributes a bunch to Arto Lindsay's "O Corpo Sutil." Particularly subtle, iirc.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 July 2014 01:51 (nine years ago) link

xposting, sort of: Eno's had his fingers in so many pies, it's inspiring to taste a new one, be it a Roger Eno record, or Favea Hex or whatever. This is one of the more obscure things he did:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCVYG1AyNWg

Overlooked at least as much as that Dido track and Corrs track i noted on the other thread. Not necessarily for the worse, but like his collaboration with Elvis Costello, it seems too high profile to be this obscure.

he has scared me on a number of occasions.

La Lechera, Thursday, 10 July 2014 16:21 (nine years ago) link

Everything about Blank Frank is amazing. Think my favourite moment is the guitar exploding at the 55 second mark. It is one of those songs that's just full of amazing moments though.

These Roxy Music songs are all way too low, but I guess some people didn't want to vote for their stuff in an Eno poll. I gave points to all three of their songs that have placed so far.

"Blank Frank" seems much too low, but I'm a sucker for recontextualizing the Bo Diddley beat.

having clapped "blank frank"'s bo diddley beat live as part of a clapping choir, i can report it's really hard to stay with it when the beat turns around every other verse, and also really fun.

and yes way too low. but i didn't vote, so there.

Puzzled that "China My China" is so low (it was my #1). I don't know how to gauge how problematic/of-its-time the orientalism is, but regardless the way that big reverbed guitar (Manzanera's, I think?) comes in with the post-typewriter key change and repeats that bent note figure before scuttering off into dissipated feedback takes the song into the stratosphere, a place where two sonic worlds join as one — it's one of the most joyous things I've ever experienced in recorded music.

even though it was my first Eno vocal album and contains my 2 fave Eno songs ever (Here and Julie), over time I've found Before And After Science less exciting and convincing than Tiger and Another, because it's not as well-integrated as the latter and not as solid as the former.

there IS a structure to it and side 2 is one of the best Eno sides as a whole, but I feel that Energy Fools The Magician would likely be a weak to average tune on a Brand X or Weather Report album and ultimately Through Hollow Lands can't hold a candle to Harold Budd. overall a really good album by anyone else's standards, but as Eno goes a grab-bag of greats and also-rans.

I voted 'Cindy Tells Me' pretty high. I just realised I forgot about 'Blank Frank' in my "vote for every song off HCTWJ" ballot. Huh. It's not actually anywhere near one of my favourites, though it's always better when I listen to it than when I remember it - my memory cuts out all the cool weird bits that come in throughout.

I had Spinning Away really high – maybe too high, but I didn't want all of side 2 from BaAS to occupy the entirety of my first five picks.

When I played it the other day in my car, my 6 year-old daughter said it was so-so. She volunteered that she didn't like the beat but thought the singing was really good. Already a music critic.

Despite my love for both Brian Eno and John Cale I don't know the collaborative album either. I have a feeling I might have heard a track or two, maybe? But I didn't get a chance to listen over to it, so no votes from me.

And crut, I dunno if this is weird, but I actually barely voted for any ambient Eno at all. I love the pop stuff so much, and then I put in a bunch of votes for some electronic and 'avant' stuff, but not really any ambient works.

Voted for these last three songs. When listening to Another Green World before voting I did find it so hard to separate the songs and pick highlights. I had 'Here Come the Warm Jets' as number one on my ballot too, how come there's only one #1 in the results?

This poll has inspired a week of near constant Eno listening for me. Albums wise I think 'Taking Tiger Mountain' is underrated. It's my fave after 'Another Green World'.

I must say I'm surprised at how well the first two albums are doing here. Taking Tiger Mountain in particular I just find mostly irritating TBH.

This one showed up on so many ballots -- and seemingly all at #6 -- during a stretch when I was looking at each one as it came in that I thought it would win the whole thing. Probably skewed by wishful thinking and the fact that it was my #2. But the lack of 1st-place votes knocked it down.

This either had to be my #1 or my #30, it just seemed odd putting it anywhere else on the ballot. #30 it was.

"Baby's On Fire" is all about the solo.

For me it's all about the super-deep "bommmm" bit juxtaposed with the sneery whine. But then I'm not a big solo fan.

Voted high for both 'True Wheel' and 'St. Elmo's Fire' so I'm happy anyway.

Catching up...

Forgot "Everything Merges With the Night" – forgot to include this. My second favorite vocal song on AGW after "St. Elmo's Fire." It just embodies that pic on the back sleeve with him sitting in some flat somewhere.

"On Some Faraway Beach" has always been compromised by a piano part that reminds me of Bob Seger's "Still the Same."

"Needles in the Camel's Eye" was my solitary vote from Warm Jets. he never bettered the VU-meets-glam template he set here.

"By This River" – another one that could've been my #1 but just a hair behind "...Julie With" and "Spider & I" which probably says more about my feelings for Side 2 of BaAS than anything. Also, another Roedelius solo song stretched out:

One of my all time 5 fave gtr solos, but the whole package is brilliant.

Neil Sekada (Jon Lewis), Friday, 11 July 2014 19:41 (nine years ago) link

"The True Wheel" inspired at least two band names: 801 and A Certain Ratio. Also, possibly, The Modern Lovers. Has to be some kind of record.

I love this Manzanera solo more than most things – this kept creeping up my ballot until it finally landed at #5.

had i been in condition to vote I would've given the palm to either St. Elmo's or Mother Whale.

I didn't vote for any Roxy. They are among my favorite bands but I just couldn't in good conscience credit Eno with their early success, esp. since he didn't write any of those songs.

Speaking of "The Big Ship," Eno pretty much owns that sort of wistful chord progression, doesn't he? Kind of his own variation on the doo wop progression. He comes back to it a lot in various projects, and explores a similar sort of ideas in "Spinning Away," or even the beginning of "Where the Streets Have No Name," say.

Jazzbo, Saturday, 12 July 2014 02:15 (nine years ago) link

I would like an Eno book that goes into lots of detail about studio sessions and different approaches and techniques used.

Neil Sekada (Jon Lewis), Saturday, 12 July 2014 02:29 (nine years ago) link

Best for those may be I want to say the Eric tamm book, or maybe More Dark Than Shark? Or Geeta's book, for that one album. a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff, the making of stuff, has come out in bits and spurts over the years, usually anecdotally.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 12 July 2014 02:41 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, just pulled it out and the Tamm book is the most detailed about the actual process. Very technical/musicological at times.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 12 July 2014 03:02 (nine years ago) link

Still, it's disappointing in terms of really saying much about his actual working methods.

For all his theorizing on Japanese gardens and such, honestly, I would be far more interested in a master class on how he processes sounds or programs his DX-7.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 12 July 2014 03:17 (nine years ago) link

What's the difference?!

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 12 July 2014 03:32 (nine years ago) link

Apparently Eno and Jacques lu Cont are like the only two people in history to master programming the dx7.

You know, I've not ever heard Brian Eno give a bad interview. I interviewed him once, briefly, and even that was endlessly fascinating. But really, the guy just seems like he's always thinking and engaged and able to get his ideas across in a spontaneous, funny, smart way. Like, this random interview:

http://www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/16575/1/brian-eno-bodybuilding-and-brazen-tunes

It's full of great stuff!

DD: Is there something ironic about putting on a piece as still as 77 Million Paintings in somewhere so unstill?
Brian Eno: Well, when I lived in New York I made my quietest music. The record On Land (1982) I made here. And one of the things you do when you make a piece of art is you try to make the world you'd rather be in. Do you know what I mean? You try to make up for the deficiencies of the place that you're in, because New York is a hellish place to live. It's so noisy and always broken and always being mended and abrasive and disturbing. So one of the things you want is to find a little place where, 'Swooh', you can breathe out for a minute.

[DD: Is it also a reaction to the increasing smallness of music?

Brian Eno: Yeah, I think it is. It's sort of a reaction against headphones, which I don't like. I don't like having the music pressed on to my head. I like feeling I'm walking around inside it.

This, alone, is intriguing and inspiring enough to fuel several different strains of creative activity, should one choose to embrace any of its ideas.

When I was relatively young - say, 15, I'd guess - someone gave me a cassette with "Another Green World" on one side and "Rain Dogs" on the other. I used to drive around listening to them, never once considering that both are pretty unusual car albums. Anyway, I never considered either album odd or exotic, at least not at the time. But then one day, not too long ago, within the past few years, something unscrambled in my head and I suddenly realized, huh, yeah, these albums are pretty strange. But I think strange really works in their favor in the "not dated" sense. They try so hard to do something different that they're totally at odds with the sound of the times (even though, sure, they absolutely sound very much of their time).

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 14 July 2014 01:01 (nine years ago) link

Love the Lovely Bones track – other than watching (enduring) it during the movie, I hadn't heard it.

And another voter for "The Harness"! My favorite from My Squelchy Life by a good distance.

I'd kind of love to do a ballot of lesser-known Eno cuts. I had a few on my real ballot but it would be great to see every recommend their 10 favorite obscurities. Can try to brainstorm a few today if others are interested.

I listened to a lot of previously unheard (by me) Eno for the poll, and I think my favorite has been Music for White Cube - http://whitecube.com/exhibitions/brian_eno_music_for_white_cube_duke_street_1997/

Eno has recorded himself two or three hundred times singing a single falsetto note held for as long as possible. In each instance he has tried, unsucessfully of course, to attain the same pitch. In this way the fallible human voice becomes the raw material for a sophisticated infallible software programme. This programme (called KOAN) allows Eno to impose about 150 possible instructions on the recorded notes in order to generate unique combinations of harmony, rhythm, tempo, vibrato and pitch. The resulting compositions have then been selected and recorded on CD.

Music for White Cube consisted of four CD stations which each played a unique CD cut with eight distinct tracks. Each CD station randomly selected and simultaneously played these tracks constantly producing unique combinations so that visitors never heard the same piece of music repeated. Like the generative system from which it derives, this symphony continually remakes itself in time.

I love "Against The Sky" on The Pearl but wasn't sure whether to include it in original or "An Echo Of Night" form.

"The Lost Day"* has always been my jam from On Land, but I listened in greater detail than usual to the album rather than as background or falling asleep music and the (subtle!) tunes of a few other tracks became more apparent, so I'll be listening for them. partly because of the addition of Hassell (4/1) or Material (4/2), I feel like the side closers work a little against the mood of the first 3 on each side which are more of a piece, but it's pretty perfect as is.

*also like Eno's lost day concept: the things that didn't come to be. which could be read as the road not taken, in contrast to Another Green World aka the ultimately fertile other road (or art process) taken. but in "the lost day" I think Eno was nostalgic for better(?) futures that failed to materialize: other green potentials (or even things we didn't get to do).

wasn't surprised that Karl Hyde and Eno started working together cos the chords in "Born Slippy" reminded me of "Always Returning".

Choice rarity, inexplicably amended to recent editions of "Wrong Way Up."

Another incredible song, inexplicably on Cale's Eno-produced Dylan Thomas tribute:

Eno (and some Eno cohort, like Percy Jones and Phil Collins) is on this. I believe Eno plays "The Wolf:"

And come to think of it, no one really rates the Ultravox album he produced, right? An early misfire (though not a bad record).

multi-xp: hilarious! I was just about to post the William Bell cover - what do people think of it? I remember Eno saying he loved the tune, but I felt he'd gone too far into decorative resignation by stripping the soul/yearning out. not a million miles away from what Ferry did in recasting songs (though without the comedy of Hard Rain).
speaking of which, doesn't Eno's singing on "Spinning Away" sound very Ferry c.Avalon?
my highest Roxy vote was for "Beauty Queen" which is so much more Ferry than Eno (and allegedly was drowned out live by Eno fans), but it's my fave Roxy Eno-era or otherwise.

"The Soul Of Carmen Miranda" may be the best late-Cale song. shoulda remembered to pick that for Eno involvement.

Ten quick ones:

More Dust – Eno/Schwalm – Hawaiian guitar beauty, this made my actual ballot)
What Actually Happened? – Nerve Net gem, all dirty drums and Eno processed vox speaking about a "recovering rapist."
The Harness – My Squelchy Life cut, probably the best vocal track he's done since WWU. Could've been on the four classic albums. Also on my actual ballot.
Grey Promenade – Roger Eno. Milton had this on his and it narrowly missed mine. The treatment on the piano is to die for.
Stars – The closer on Apollo, this is just a slowed down Under Stars but it's amazing. Also on my ballot!
Wire Shock – Another Nerve Net cut. Probably his best post TH rhythm track. Brass section at the end is outstanding.
Still Return – Budd/Eno, closer of The Pearl, and really just another slowed down cut (the opener, Late October).
Aubade – Harmonia '76. Gorgeous closer, with Eno and/or Roedelius doing organ textures, Rother playing a stately melody and Dieter processing the drum box. Some days, this is my favorite track from the album, and one of the three (amazing) cuts that only made it to the reissue.
The Shade – Eno/Moebius/Roedelius, the combination of the Roedelius piano, lonely synth melody and harmonized Another Green World guitars make this probably my favorite Eno cut w Cluster (Harmonia '76 has a nice demo of this called "When Shade Was Born").
Tension Block – a menacing groove from MFF III w Lanois.

so I relistened to Before And After Science in full and found that side 1 held up better than I remembered - the grab-bag effect helps the album still feel fresh, full of ideas/directions - you can hear early seeds of Remain In Light on "No One Receiving" and "Kurt's Rejoinder". also it's a great yin/yang album (e.g. madcap vs serenity). and I was a bit unkind upthread to "Through Hollow Lands" - side 2 really is a supreme Eno side.
should be higher on my albums list.

Eno - 8m1 (The Lovely Bones)

Pulled down all Eno's stuff from this the other day ... and have been kind of obsessed with this track. It's not very involved – some guitar, ride cymbal and shimmer. And it doesn't really break any new ground. But it is emotional and haunting.

three weeks pass...

bumpin this bc i bought the only eno book available on my kindle (on some faraway beach) because i wanted to be able to highlight stuff and actually find it again
and i have some thoughts/questions

for starters, what a fortunate man he has been! stumbled into the right place at the right time in his life, allowed so much creative freedom (and all sorts of other freedoms). i'm only at the part where he starts working on the warm jets, so there are a lot of things i'm looking forward to reading about
also the writing is a little corny but whatever it was the only one available and it seemed ok

one of my favorite parts was when he went to see aguirre
the thought of young eno sitting and watching that movie makes me want to squeal

haha I downloaded that book too! But first I am reading the other one, the one by Eric Tamm, which is available as a PDF online for free with the author's blessing. I can't remember if Kindles will render PDF or not?

ugh they do but it's a step i have yet to take with more than one thing
i should embrace technology for eno

I didn't find the writing corny at all. Good book. Alas it wasn't available on Kindle in the States.

The way Eno embraces technology, you should download it onto a DX7.

i'm totally loving this book
i'm reading it really slowly so i'm just on the part in 1975 when he gets better from his car accident and starts working with television
today i looked up what he was doing in august of 1975 and he was finishing up the recording of AGW
does anyone know the order in which the songs were recorded for that album?
next year will be its 40th bday!
