my 'heart attack' comment itt was obviously leaning in that direction but to be honest it just kind of speaks to the desperately enthusiastic memecore culture we live in now that the guy people had learned to ignore long before whatever the fuck Mister Lonely and Trash Humpers were is back in the spotlight with a little savvy lol casting

Grolsch Film Works and VICE Films present 'The Fourth Dimension', a film that gives us a glimpse of enlightenment through the eyes of three one-of-a-kind characters. The three filmmakers - Fedorchenko, Korine and Kwiecinski - have created three unique stories that offer up their vision of this higher plane of existence, the Fourth Dimension. Each filmmaker takes his character on a journey that changes the way they see the world and themselves. And each filmmaker will offer a different perspective on what the Fourth Dimension is. Left-field writer-director Harmony Korine's new picture is quite the weirdest, wildest beast we've seen in this year's Venice competition – a college-kid caper that's not so much a case of Korine moving to the mainstream as him showing us just how woozy and debauched the mainstream can be.
...
Full credit to Korine, who sustains this act of creative vandalism right through to the finish. Spring Breakers unfolds as a fever dream of teenage kicks, a high-concept heist movie with mescal in the fuel tank. The director monkeys with the plot and kicks away the signposts. He loops the dialogue and drags a dilated, ecstatic camera-lens across honeyed flesh and painted nails. The result is his most fully realised, purely satisfying feature film since Gummo, his outrageous directing debut, way back in 1997

GQ: With regards to your character in the movie, the rapper Riff Raff has said the role you are playing was originally meant for him. Is that true?

James Franco: None of that's true. I'll tell you why he could have never been offered the role. Harmony (Korine, the movie's writer and director) and I were talking about doing a movie together before Spring Breakers was even conceived. I had been a fan of his work and he wanted to do something and I said, "I'll do anything with you." We started discussing ideas and one day he sent me a treatment, which he said he's never done before, just to run it by me. And it was this idea of these girls going on spring break and then they meet up with this guy who leads them into the dark side. And then he wrote the script. So there's no chance Riff Raff could have been offered the role. Of course Harmony and I looked at some of Riff Raff's videos as inspiration, but he was one of a number of people we looked at. I would say the biggest influence on the role was this local Florida rapper named Dangerous. He's fairly unknown, but he was down there in the place, living the life, and he became the biggest model for me and he's in the movie.

otm: i saw it in a suburban theater at 10pm with only abt 40-45 other ppl, but when the britney piano sequence started it was the most laughter i've heard since borat on opening weekend

throughout the movie i was like damn skeillex must have listened to a ton of cliff martinez before he sat down to score this, until i saw the credits lol

i def went in with too many expectations and wasn't really in to it at first but once i kicked back and just let it do its thing i really was enraptured with it. with the multiple voiceovers and floaty non-linear editing its really much closer to malick than any obvious mann/depalma/tarantino comparisons (or korine for that matter), but a bizarro world malick where ~oneness~ is replaced by ~endless tension~

the multiple voiceovers and floaty non-linear editing its really much closer to malick than any obvious mann/depalma/tarantino comparisons (or korine for that matter), but a bizarro world malick where ~oneness~ is replaced by ~endless tension~

i thought this too, re: the malick parallel, but theres no tension @ all imo

maaybe if harmony made this 10 yrs ago it wouldve been effective, both in regards to harmony possibly actually writing provocative content and that the culture itself was less saturated w/ this actual vibe & maybe itd seem genuinely fresh and satirical

...so it'd be more satirical if the subject being made fun of was less already in-your-face and needing to be made fun of? nah.

fauxmarc, Thursday, 28 March 2013 13:54 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe the point was that it's more difficult now to decide to what extent this is satirical. Which imo is what makes it even more impressive and what sort of gives some of those conservative critics a leg to stand their arguments on.

Ok, I have finally seen this. The hype outweighed the movie itself by a pretty wide margin -- this was not particularly sensational in content unless you live under some kind of blandness dome.

I thought it was sign-o-the-times noteworthy that Faith/SG (the only character whose name I can remember, outside of Alien) kept going on and on about how beautiful and magical and spiritual and transcendental she felt spring break was, how she had found true enlightenment in this paradise of good wonderful kind generous people...who, when you looked at them, were constantly flipping off the camera while literally having alcohol funneled into their naked bodies both before and after playing with guns. Not that the latter was surprising at all (except for the fixation on guns, not sure what that was about), but the stuff about how ~magical twinkle star soft grunge love people~ everything seemed very zeitgeisty.

For better or worse, the twins were classic Korine. The Britney montages and gun blowing were memorable. Vanessa Hudgens was my favorite character because I could see in her eyes when she was lying to her parental figure on the phone that she really dngaf.

Just about every element - the music, the photography, the performances (Hudgens in particular) - was perfect. Could have done with a little less repetitive looping of the dialogue, especially in the run-up to the climactic raid on Gucci Mane's compound, but overall it was extremely tight in its drifty way, and it looked phenomenal.

I still haven't seen it yet. Here's the take of another critic with doubts:

I think that Korine is a talented filmmaker in the way he conjures atmosphere. I think Benoit Debie is one of the most exciting working cinematographers. I am not trying to say that I found nothing here to think about, to be entertained by, even in some ways, to enjoy (I am not going to act like the Britney Spears montage was not grotesque/sublime/something I will Youtube in the future). But I do want to question what people find so subversive or rebellious or “intellectual” about this reductive ogglefest in arthouse’s clothes. I want to ask you to think about what you think radical art looks like to you in 2013, and how (or if!) it is at all different from what mainstream “pop” art looks like to you. Which is a really long-winded way of saying: Meet the art boss. Same as the old boss with the combover and the (“ironic”) Penthouse subscription and the self-satisfied air that everything he’s doing is New and Edgy and Never Been Done Before, ‘cept he knows Werner Herzog so I guess he’s cool.

In anthropology, liminality (from the Latin word līmen, meaning "a threshold"[1]) is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rituals, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the ritual is complete. During a ritual's liminal stage, participants "stand at the threshold" between their previous way of structuring their identity, time, or community, and a new way, which the ritual establishes.

The concept of liminality was first developed in the early 20th century by anthropologist Arnold van Gennep and later taken up by Victor Turner.[2] More recently, usage of the term has broadened to describe political and cultural change as well as rituals.[3] During liminal periods of all kinds, social hierarchies may be reversed or temporarily dissolved, continuity of tradition may become uncertain, and future outcomes once taken for granted may be thrown into doubt.[4] The dissolution of order during liminality creates a fluid, malleable situation that enables new institutions and customs to become established.[5] The term has also passed into popular usage, where it is applied much more broadly, undermining its significance to some extent.[6]

yeah, the movie has boobs and cool images, and I def liked more than Gummo, mostly thanks to the James Franco comedy bits. but it also has interminable, cliched, portentous loops of dialogue along the lines of "pretend it's a video game". part of the reason you have critics who didn't like the film are hand-wringing about whether the film was "intellectual" or "subversive" or not is that a lot of critics who liked the film have come up with bullshit "study of nihlism"/"state of america today" reasons to like it.

Well that was part of Scott's point I thought. So much of what currently passes for criticism is just defensive, pre-emptive posturing against other people's opinions rather than having anything interesting to say. There's an adolescent insecurity and spinelessness about it.

xposts! and anyway yeah i get that criticism needs to defend its prerogative to designate artistic quality but at the same time that's basically the organizing principle of making interesting observations and arguments about those observations, and not really terrible interesting when that judgement is sorta the "point" of the review.

da croupier, Sunday, 31 March 2013 21:38 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know if I could have gotten this movie down to 70 minutes but I definitely could have gotten it down to 80:

- fewer/no repetitions of dialogue, especially the "are you scared"/"scaredypants" part and one or two other sections where one or two lines of dialogue were repeated four or five times;
- end early, so that as the girls and Franco get off the boat and are walking toward the house for the climactic shootout, it just smash-cuts to closing credits as their asses are bouncing along the dock; not one shot is fired on-screen

In general, though, I loved it and am totally in agreement with Scott about the worthlessness of film criticism. Especially David Denby, who is just a tedious moralistic scold. Can anybody recommend a movie critic who focuses on how a movie looks rather than its message? That's the writer I'm constantly searching for, just like I'm constantly searching for music critics who write about music instead of lyrics or an album's presumed socio-cultural context (within the critic's circle of peers and friends, though that's never explicitly acknowledged—it's always just assumed that the entire world is made up of a few dozen critics who all follow each other on Twitter and Tumblr).

Glenn Kenny often does. So does Dave Kehr.

I really like Kenny because he always seems totally willing to accept a movie in the same spirit it's given.

ryan, Sunday, 31 March 2013 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

I definitely wish there were more critics that wrote well about the visual experience of a film, but any writer whose primary goal was to discuss that would probably hate being a weekly movie critic in 2013.

As with some Girls criticism, some of the reviews are bound by the idea that there's nothing to learn from a woman under 30.

Also, it wouldn't be hard to cut The Tree of Life or Einstein on the Beach to an even hour.

One unexpected corollary result of having seen this movie: the sudden desire to give the finger to all cameras.
What's with the camera anyway -- who's behind the camera? Lots of footage that was playing to the camera, but did we ever see who was operating it? Is that part of the movie and I just missed it because I'm dense?

The way she used her sexuality to influence people/their behavior was really haunting/scary. It reminded me of this girl who used to say things like "boys like me because I'm small, they can pretend I'm young" and then just looked at me straight in the face and waited for me to react. The look in her eyes was the same and they shared that same cocky dangerous fearlessness. That was years ago and I still think about it from time to time. What a creepy yet insightful and also terrifying thing to say.

I had never heard Skrillex before this movie, though I'd heard endless jokes about him - but I thought the score in this was awesome. - Ran into famed mass murderer Henry Kissinger at the Salvador Dali Museum
- An older man (about 30) tried to pick me up on the beach, which I only fully realized afterward

I thought the film was buiklding to something other than it did. Seems somewhat nihilistic the way it ends.
I would think years on the street would outweigh teenage spirit.

Sorry, trying to keep that as vague as possible but think I could be failing.

Wonder what the outcome of normal Spring break normally is, embarassment & need to check for STDs? & the need to live with new reputations. & sort out your bank balance?
Noty living in th eculture I'm assuming that the sprinbreak experience is particular to one particular branch of society, but then maybe the college experience is too? like if you don't have money you're not going to be able to get into the whole thing anyway, but I'm outside the U.S. & not familiar with the education system. So not aware of how egalitarian it is in the first place. Is Spring break one of the few times that peopl get to let their hair down in that way? Or is that the life the collegiate classes live all the time, just with added sun at that point?

FWIW a huge portion of the actual score was by Cliff Martinez, who also held together Drive's soundtrack.

I saw this last night and was surprised how much I loved it- the slow pace, the slow flashback/forward editing structure, circling around significant lines of dialog, the single-shot robbery scene, but most of all LOOK AT MY SHIT. I got numchucks!

I found this pretty tedious. It wasn't funny/campy (not that it tried to be), but neither was it anywhere close to shocking/menacing. It felt suggestive of other things--a bit of Manson, a bit of Sport from Taxi Driver, a lot of Wild Things--and the early scenes, before they left, caught a mood of sorts. Franco's good. I didn't know how to take the sledgehammer irony of the various calls home. This was my first Harmony Korine film--maybe context would add something I missed.

The blogger Voyou Desoeuvre writes that the film “produces visually the affective structure of a dubstep

produces a kind of transcendence, or an aesthetic effect that hints towards transcendence, at least.”

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 14:55 (nine years ago) link

Bedroom Secrets: this is Welsh by numbers. A cool drug taking alkie (not unlike Ray Lennox is at the start of Filth) and a stereotypical fat spotty geek are linked in a Dorian Gray way. Bits of it are really REALLY shite, but as ever bits of it are really well observed. The geeky guy is obsessed Harvest Moon but way too accurately for a casual observer to pick up. It's a lengthy version of the relationship between Lennox and Cliff Blades in Filth I suppose. The search for the father feels rehashed too, although I can't think where from. Maybe bits of it are Juice Terry in Glue, he had a weird Father Complex.

Crime: A pretty slight story padded out, but half-decent nonetheless. Part of it smacks of "I've just moved to America" (which he had) and sexual abuse as a child leading to adult issues show their face again (like in Marabou Stork Nightmares, to name but one), but the plot is pretty believable up to the final act. The weakest thing about it is that it's clearly supposed to be a redemption piece for Ray Lennox, and I didn't think he needed one.

If You Liked School: the pieces are short enough not to get boring, but it's another tirade of stereotyped grotesques in search of a plot which they don't always get. The Korean chef one is particularly tired if memory serves correct.

Reheated Cabbage: Pretty successful in that it's reprints of old, rare stuff from before these ideas just became recyclable tropes for Welsh. Except the Miami novella, which is new. And shite.

Skagboys: I could have loved this at 100 pages. Instead it's repetitive and unenlightening; on the skag, off it, on it, off it. Rinse, repeat. Exploit a girl, dump her, exploit a girl, dump her. The Renton in love section could have been great but as a prequel it's doomed to failure before it starts and knowing that takes away the joy of reading it. Best bit was working on the ship I thought.

this is one of those things where I just marvel that it was made. It was v consistent with Korine's other films - more about impressionistic images than plot, naturalistic performances that verge on grotesque - that someone thought they could make a blockbuster out of anything he does AND get him to cast A-listers, especially in the current film industry climate, is a minor miracle. Would that studios took more crazy gambles on ridiculous ventures like this. I don't know if I need to see it again or anything, but it achieved its aims afaict, a dreamy, dayglo teen girl fantasy of "being bad"

Like there is absolutely nothing challenging or outside of Hollywood about this movie, a few vastly overrated montages aside.

James Franco and Selena Gomez starring in a movie about rebellious kids? A movie that glorifies violence, sex, and money, often at the cost of it's own coherence? What a crazy gamble!

idk maybe you watch different Hollywood movies then I do but this resembles no typical major studio fare that I know of, either formally or visually. oh sure, the PREMISE seems like its garden variety mainstream fodder, but the delivery and execution are what counts, and this seems like one of those scenarios where studio execs greenlighted it strictly on the pitch of "Franco/Gomez Spring Break Crime Spree" w/out having ever watched anything Korine has ever made.

I have no idea how the actual mechanics of the financing/production/distro of this got done but Harmony Korine's ouevre and style does not exactly have MAINSTREAM BLOCKBUSTER written all over it, it's hard to imagine his style having any appeal whatsoever to the movie's ostensible demographic (teenagers) cf mh's post

this is exactly what's funny/amazing about it! that this tactic could even work, that Korine could basically trick a studio into making something like this by exploiting their own greed/ignorance/stupidity in the service of making something much artsier/stranger/interesting - that is not something that happens much anymore in the studio system.

I guess my problem is I saw this w two Korine fans, and everyone I knew that saw it before were Korine fans.

That someone can exploit sex and violence to sell a movie is not a rarity. That the movie includes a few blurry montages does not make it artsy.

▴▲ ▴TH3CR()$BY$H()W▴▲ ▴ (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 21:36 (nine years ago) link

mattresslessness, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 21:40 (nine years ago) link

what mainstream director's work do you think this resembled - Katherine Bigelow? Michael Bay? Darren Aranofsky? Genuinely curious. I guess we can argue about the definition of "artsy" til the cows come home but Korine's aesthetic seems to be guided by predecessors and concerns that are largely outside of mainstream Hollywood (idk how mainstream you consider Malick, is he "artsy" enough for you?)

stadow shevens (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 21:42 (nine years ago) link

Don't know about Trash Humpers (still haven't seen it), but Herzog seems like the Korine 1.0 reference point. This is the upgrade.

I don't know. It's a sad state of affairs when the best argument for a film is that 'they actually got away with having a big backing from Hollywood or whatever'. Um. no. Comparing it to other Hollywood/Blockbuster movies makes Spring Breakers seem very appealing. Put it in the category it belongs. If you do that, it fails miserably.

I mean, talk about the movie, not that Korine et al fooled Hollywood and mocked the fans it wanted to appeal to. If anything, that makes this movie even more crappy. You mocked kids who have a pretty low IQ level. Congrats.

Plus, I can imagine at some point this was pitched as a PG-13 Girls Gone Wild. "Sex sells, guys! Plus our audience loves dumbed down plots and eye candy. It's a no-brainer!"

Meh.

plus, i'll add there is a sense of mocking because of the movie's disingenuosness. I can't imagine Disney kids being too well-versed in irony or the so-called 'depth' of the message some purport it to have. At the end of the movie, it is just pure indulgence and goes into fantasy land trying to shock, which it also falls short of.

i purchased my ticket knowing full well that I was paying to see a Harmony Korine movie; majority of the audience I saw the movie with paid to see a James Franco and Vanessa Hudgens movie, and I honestly felt bad for them...the trailers were cool, that's why they were there, but how do you explain to a bunch of high schoolers who even if they are super into bikinis and guns that this REALLY isn't the movie you think it's going to be. i don't think anyone is *mocking* them itt

teenage audiences were hella confused by the movie. that's just a fact. no judgement.

I reserve the right to applaud any film that exposes mainstream audiences to approaches and techniques and ideas outside the norm, even if (maybe especially if) it does so under false pretenses. Challenging audiences is a good thing imo, people should try it more often.

As for the film itself, like I said, I felt like it worked, it achieved its goals - it's a dreamlike teengirl fantasy of transgression and wildness where nothing bad happens to them and they are in charge. It reflects the exaggerated, melodramatic, hormonally charged mindset of its protagonists. It's a mixture of childish fantasy (everything is colorful and SUPERHAPPY!) and a distorted vision of what it means to be an adult (sex/drugs/violence) all blended together in a garish, disorienting fashion. It goes over the top and is both funny and ridiculous in doing so. It maintains an atmosphere of being young and fucked up and all the hazy, nauseating, and sometimes seemingly profound impressions that go along with that. I've never been a teenage girl on spring break but this seems to capture that "I AM PARTYING OUT OF BOUNDS! LOOK AT MEEEE" vibe really really well.

xxp

stadow shevens (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 22:16 (nine years ago) link

I don't think this movie not being what teenage audiences expected = mocking the audience

Haneke mocks his audience. This film doesn't really address its audience directly.

stadow shevens (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 22:17 (nine years ago) link

that was kind of the draw to me, the things that read as entry-level subversive or shocking but are probably thing Harmony Korine imagines on his way to the toilet in the morning

akerlund, assuming he's not changed since I saw music videos he did and Spun, might be a good follow-up if he doesn't take it seriously! I got the feeling from Spun that his m.o. is saying "whooa, look how fucked up this is (isn't that kind of cool)" while spinning the camera around a lot

I mean, Spring Breakers 2, from the mind that brought you the music video for Prodigy's "smack my bitch up" sounds about right

But I can't imagine him getting the scenes like s1ocki mentioned right. Korine really did a good serene, yet still ridiculous, religious group

Ok i looked up the people that funded the movie...

Hanley started his career in the music business as the founder of Intergalactic Music, Inc., a company that supplied vintage Fender and Gibson guitars to musicians such as John McLaughlin, Heart, and John Entwistle of The Who. In the early 1980s, Intergalactic opened a recording studio in New York City, and recorded artists such as Africa Bambatta, Soul Sonic Force, Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, The Ramones, and Blondie minus Debbie Harry.[1]

That is effing awesome.

that someone thought they could make a blockbuster out of anything he does AND get him to cast A-listers, especially in the current film industry climate

they didn't want to make a "blockbuster", they just wanted to turn a profit and they did. it made $32 million worldwide theatrical on a budget of $5 million (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=springbreakers.htm). probably rented/sold a lot of videos, too. how many people passed on seeing this in a theater and rented it out of ahem curiosity.

the producers knew exactly what they were doing; shakey, why would you assume some kind of "smuggling" narrative on no evidence?

narratively i think this does pose some challenges to people who have seen only mainstream H'w'd movies. s1ocki and i guess everyone except shaky OTM in this regard.

that doesn't necessarily mean it's righteous, though. lots of shitty movies that would challenge audiences as much or more.

it doesn't mean it's bullshit, either.

kind of an elegant time waster IMO. there are interesting hints of a real world in it that are worth following up but korine doesn't really care. i did appreciate the dreamlike ending.

I am curious why D-40 hates this (unless I'm missing something upthread), I assume it comes from a place of gucci and riffraff fandom - but if so I think that's kind of missing the point. This is about a fantasy of reappropriation, a Disney Princess daydream about consequence-free "badness", of having the luxury and power to safely indulge in things that are conventionally viewed as dangerous (rappers, drugs, sexual games).

Οὖτις, Monday, 23 November 2015 18:01 (eight years ago) link

I think there is something to what Shakey says, esp with Franco being the kind of dangerous but safe white "guide" to it all, whereas IIRC it's the scene with actual black people that scares Selena Gomez into going home, and also that's kind of what a lot of white people's relationship to both spring break and mainstream hip-hop is about, having this "safe space" to act out fantasies of hypersexuality and abandon that they associate, via popular culture, with black people.

o this explains the movie's mediocrity

http://www.complex.com/music/2013/02/dangeruss-the-rapper-who-inspired-james-franco-spring-breakers

the whole thing is some surreal dumb shit as the movie itself

but some highlights

Had it been based on me completely, 100%, James wouldn’t have dressed like that. He dressed kind of strange in the movie, for me, for my liking. He’d have looked a lot cooler if I would have had a part in that, which I believe I could have, but I didn’t take the initiative to say, “hey, don’t wear that goofy-lookin’ shit,” you know what I’m saying. As far as—you know, he got the braids, I got dreads, I got big dumb dreads, dreads is a whole—you know, dreads is a lion in the jungle type shit, he had braids, which is like a deer. His appearance, I can’t take credit for that, and I wouldn’t want to.

[...]

I can’t lie. There’s a part of me that believes that it’s not going to be as real as it should be. A lot of it has to do with the way he was dressed in the movie. You would never catch a gangster dressing like that. And the way he talks in the movie, you can kind of tell it’s not real, it’s not authentic. Harmony Korine could have found me and put me in James’ role. I love James Franco, that’s my dog. He called me the other day, two, three days ago, he called me, just checkin’ up on me. I love James. But if Harmony wanted that real, Harmony should have came and when he found me, he should have been like, you know what, tell James I’m gonna get him on something else, we need this guy. I think Harmony knew that. That’s why he wanted me to be a part of it so quick.

"But if I had more time to really school James on that shit, I feel like it could have been better. So yeah, I do have some concerns about that, because I told him what to do, I told him how to do it, but I wasn’t there to be like, naw, that ain’t right. Here, this how you do that. And have him do it. So when I get credit for his actual character, I kind of have to take a blessing and just hope he listens to what I told him. Because like I say, I wasn’t at every single shoot to be like, “hey James, we don’t do that. We don’t do that."

Hesitate to re-open this thread--I know what the next three posts will be--but I wanted to see how this would hold up alongside American Honey, which it obviously influenced. I called it tedious upthread; I think American Honey's far superior, but I found Korine's film somewhat more interesting this time. Franco (nervy performance--he risks coming across as absolutely ridiculous, and I'm sure he does for many people, but I like what he does; Taxi Driver's Sport, definitely), the photography, and the dreaminess of the early scenes are good. Its presentation of generational vacuity is probably just as valid as The Bling Ring or Palo Alto. (They all have at least one character who's set apart--I guess that's Selena Gomez here.) Past that, I don't know. I didn't grow up with MTV's spring break series--maybe that'd provide some context I don't have. American Honey moves me; at best, Spring Breakers points towards something more, and settles for repetitions that are supposed to be hypnotic or profound or something. For me, they're just repetitive.

It's like Andrea Arnold saw this, really responded to something in it, then wondered if you could do a variation on it (helped by finding her source material in the newspaper) with a lot of feeling and empathy in place of a concept.
