Damn it. I need to find a *new* boyfriend? Finding the first one was difficult enough.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 2 January 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

At any rate, off to NYC with the boy in four hours. He's never been outside of Canada except to Florida once at the end of high school.

Excitement and/or horror awaits!

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 2 January 2012 23:31 (twelve years ago) link

spent NYE/D with the bf, made soup, watched 7 movies, snuggled with the kitty, yadda yadda. Best NYE ever.

tanuki, Monday, 2 January 2012 23:32 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i had a good new years w/ the boy (and some queens)

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 January 2012 23:34 (twelve years ago) link

NYE was spent going out with friends and then losing those friends and stumbling into other friends, etc. etc. etc.

Disorienting, but ultimately fun night.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 2 January 2012 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

I spent it w my new bf and we made silly hats and blew trombones and blew trombones.

Customs agent at border was inquisitive re: boyfriend and if we would be returning together, etc. It was odd. His customs agent asked who his boyfriend was and I had to wave perkily from the line.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 05:08 (twelve years ago) link

haha, I've been reading the Lonely Christopher (FOTabes?) short-story anthology and came acrtoss this def of love: "a sociopolitical hallucination." That'll do.

Better than Weekend, anyway.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 05:21 (twelve years ago) link

we hosted a NYE rager at our house with a keg and a band (Salamander Wool) playing in our basement and champagne corks and bottle rockets getting shot off the back porch at midnight- it was kinda hardcore, didn't get to bed until 6 am- Martin was the bartender and I was the DJ so we barely saw each other at our own party . . .

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 12:53 (twelve years ago) link

I don't believe I had a Montreal bagel on my one visit; what's different?

Alex, you're still here Thursday evening? Maybe we could get together w/ whoever else wants to....

Definitely still in town Thursday evening, but the schedule is pretty tight.

If a bunch of us are up for something I can try to talk the bf into joining or talk him into letting me slip away for an hour or two.

I am still recovering from Christmas, I think, at least emotionally. There were certainly good moments but some really upsetting things, too. Plus all of the usual holiday exhaustion and intoxication. A funeral on the 27th for a friend who had been murdered kinda capped it all off.

One good part is that my mom's side of the family is finally ready to meet D. -- he was extended an invite to 2 family functions, even -- but he's not quite ready for that. But it's progress!

I've met tons of straight guys who love to be "goofy" about same-sex stuff in a Jackass kind of way. Especially when I worked in restaurants and when I used to go to house parties w/ more 20-somethings. They did it for laughs.

I used to work with two straight guys who put on a show by talking sexy ("sexy") and rub each other's dicks through their pants as a joke. One of them got a new girlfriend who stormed out of the bar in a shit fit the first time she saw them do that. The other guy's GF soothed her, but she was never OK with it.

xp - I don't think we have! It was the first time many of the ChiLX people met: Jenny, Jeff, and I knew each other, obv., and we met La Lechera, jaymc, n/a, and Sarah (his wife, I forget her screen name).

I would like to have organized a gay FAP in Chicago this weekend but I was only there a couple days. Hung out with sarge and his boy on Saturday night and can confirm that he chose well. sarge too.

I've kissed a couple of theoretical straight guys; no tongue though.

The straight guys who I kissed or groped or was groped by were definitely straight, but we were also definitely just goofing.

Especially in NC - where I never had a gay friend, so I hung out w/ a lot of straight guys - I was the training wheels gay for bros to be tolerant of. Given enough booze, this led them to want to confront taboos like another guy doing body shots out of his girlfriend's navel or boobs or poking another guy's dick.

dor Dumbeddownball (Eric H.), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i dunno, it bugs me that i'm not being assertive at all when ppl assume i'm straight tho. i'm not saying i have to shout it from the rafters. i guess a couple things that have happened in the past week have brought it into relief. there's a straight couple i've formed a very intense friendship with in the past few months and i've found myself on the verge of coming out to them at a few appropriate moments, but always stopped myself. i was just talking to the gf last week about my lack of love and she was all "don't worry, just let it happen and you'll find the right girl", and i felt stupid and cowardly for not coming out to her at that moment. and then the other thing, a (less close, admittedly) friend teasingly suggested i might be gay in a way that seemed to imply his true assumption is that i'm straight. which was kind of revealing like do i strike ppl as kinda faggy but not like actually gay per se?

and yeah, bi concerns, although i'm p confused about that tbh. like i know i'm very much attracted to women, and i've dated and fooled around with women in the past, but something always feels kind of awkward and not quite correct about it that it doesn't when i'm with a guy. so, i'm not sure how interested i am in women for practical purposes at this point. and i'm always worried that my gay side will drive them away. i've kind of come to the conclusion that i could be with a bi woman but not a straight woman. i'm totally stuck on whether to tell ppl i'm gay or bi. maybe i should just tell ppl i'm a kinsey 4. the last guy i dated, after i said something about my gayness, was like "no, you are so totally bi!" i often wish i was completely 100% gay, that would be so much simpler!

Despite having enjoyed my handful of experiences with women, I tend to round up to gay. It's just more convenient and more accurately describes what I'm into/looking/for/want or just sort of go for the all-purpose queer.

In other news, I just remembered this afternoon that idly staring at cute guys on the bus is one of life's great joys.

And I finally got a haircut and feel vibrant and awake and human again. Shaggy mane was weighing me down.

Rev, it's tough to tell established friends if you weren't actually in the closet and hiding it from them. If you're just coming out of the closet, it's a lot easier to answer the inevitable "Why didn't you tell me before?!" than if you are correcting their assumptions. Anyway, I'm wishing you the best.

I never had sleeping around days, I guess. Never figured out *how* to do it. I dunno. It's not like I'm opposed to the concept - hell, I'm allowed to - but the entire concept of picking up guys remains totally daunting and confusing to me. I feel like I stumbled into a pretty decent relationship through dumb luck.

Tbh, school and life are so exhausting these days I don't have it in me to go out that much (and despite not picking up ever, I love going out). Went to a concert Friday night that ended at 2:30 for the first time in months and Saturday I was hungover and unproductive until sundown.

The boy's been expressing a desire to indulge in his 'wild youth' days, though, so I guess I'll just live vicariously through him.

but the entire concept of picking up guys remains totally daunting and confusing to me.

Me too until I have way too many drinks in me and I turn a corner and I'm suddenly starting conversations all over the place and evidently being good at breaking the ice in a way I normally am not.

Last night I went to the somewhat seedy Lucky H0r5h0e and talked to a bunch of Mexican and Guatemalan guys celebrating two birthdays. One of them - short and cute - asked to friend me on FB but I'm not sure he succeeded. I was like just take my phone number, but being a modern man, he doesn't like using the phone.

“Unlike most artworks in a museum, you are allowed to touch this piece and to take away a piece of candy. Gonzalez-Torres made this artwork in memory of Ross Laycock. At the time the work was created, Ross had recently died of causes related to AIDS. The candy pile starts each day at 175 pounds, which was Ross’ ideal body weight. As visitors take candy, the pile gets smaller. This process mimics Ross’ weight loss as a result of his illness. Museum staff replenishes the candy regularly. Gonzalez-Torres’ decision to portray Ross with multicolored, shiny candies was a thoughtful one. Seeing such a large pile of candy on the floor stimulates notions of abundance, sweetness, and happiness—feelings associated with Ross, which the artist wished to share with viewers in a unique way.”

The pile was the Untitled (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) piece. I don't entirely remember what the stack-of-paper piece was. I gather he's done a few different ones. This was at SFMOMA in early 2004.

I'm going to stop fighting it and just say it everywhere: the Diamanda Galas performance tonight was amazing!!

Besides all the expected stuff - awesome vocals and piano accompaniment - I loved that she did quite a bit of talking and she was entertaining and funny. She was quirky, wry, and darkly silly. Like Jenny said, you wouldn't expect her to be so adorable! When she took a bow she pointed at people near the front and acting sort of goofy (I honestly expected her to do finger guns) then she turned and walked offstage in her weird, gangly way, with her hips thrust forward.

That stuff didn't overshadow the performance for me, but it stood out b/c I hadn't seen that side of her before. I had suspected that she had a good sense of humor b/c it just makes sense for heavy, morbid, and serious preoccupations to be accompanied by a sense of humor.

What a great night!

12:10 - realisation that i have no immediate work or stress today + strong desire to get out of house for first time in 48 hours + oh look the cinema 10 mins from my house is showing the artist at 12.50, just enough time to shower and walk there for a spontaneous treat!
12:40 - out of shower, just gonna sync ipod

IPOD DIES, ERASES ALL MUSIC ON ITSELF FOR NO REASON, HAS TO BE RESTORED TO FACTORY SETTINGS

12:50 - finally get ipod syncing again. but it now has to sync all 3000 songs that were originally on it instead of just a couple

13:00 - still syncing. realise there is no point going to cinema any more. should possibly have just left ipod syncing and gone but have realised too late. HATE MY LIFE

Urgh. A former hook-up asked if I wanted to hang out later tonight and I had to give this long spiel about how I'm in a pretty committed relationship at the moment and that if we hung out we would probably hookup, and by doing so I'd be lying to Phillip and him as well. I really hate excluding people, but if it's a choice between possibly hurting someone's feelings and betraying my loved one, the right decision is clear (but still sucks to make).

also, from wednesday-sunday morning were some of the most insane days of my entire life. th3o and i hung out with friends til late on wednesday, then made a picnic and rode his motorcycle along the coast up to Land's End on thursday, had awesome sex next to the ocean on some rocks....then proceeded to pick up some friends in a car and go to a punk show in the east bay, after that sneaking into this big abandoned warehouse with great graffiti....friday we made beats until late in the evening, then saturday, we got up super early because our friend was in the hospital after an accident, wandered around sleepless for several hours, then napped, went to a party at this squat in the city, then travelled to the east bay again to go to this other squat party which ended in an orgy, then a weird fight b/w me and the3o, then a kiss and make up, then yesterday, we went clothes shopping at the dollar racks and nursed our hangover over some lazy games of pool in the dive bar near his house.

uh.. yeah. the older i get, the more totally weird and awesome my life seems to get.

it's kind of funny how so many of you coupled up right around the time that i started settling into single life.

had to go to DC for work last week. not sure i'll ever be able to go back there without it feeling completely surreal and melancholy. also kind of marvel at how long i lasted there because it holds very little appeal for me now. i figure it helped having a bf almost the whole time i was there.

got to spend about 3 glorious minutes with my ex while i was there. he has a new bf now, which i think is good for him and fully support, but his ex isn't comfortable with us seeing each other. such a bummer. anyway, he snuck out to say hi and we could barely contain ourselves lol. i still love him to death.

lou, as far as i'm concerned, that's shitty, and any relationship two people choose to have should be between those two people, whether they're exes or not. i'm still good friends with one of my exes, we both date other people, and if any of those people said that i couldn't see said ex because it made them feel uncomfortable, i'd have a nice long conversation with them, and if they couldn't accept it, tell them to fuck off.

steve, yeah, i guess i knew where you were coming from, too. what i didn't say about that trick (and about the book i learned it from) was that it comes from people around the world, in mostly 'developing' or 'undeveloped' countries, where a measuring cup isn't something to be found readily in the kitchen, as it is not really a necessity. that was where my 'fuck a measuring cup' bit came in.

My perfect-every-time-rice (no sticking, even in stainless steel):

1. wash a cup of rice if it’s basmati, don’t bother if it’s generic long grain (rinse it in a strainer until the water runs clear)
2. saute the rice in your saucepan with olive oil (or canola I guess) until the rice starts smelling like popcorn
3. add 2 cups of water and a good pinch of salt
4. cover and drop the heat down to VERY LOW
5. set a timer for 20 minutes and fuhgeddaboudit
6. when the timer goes off, turn the heat off, don’t take the lid off, set the timer for 10 more minutes and fuhgeddaboudit
7. PROFIT

(don't fluff the rice until after the 20+10 minutes; don't bother washing it; use as little oil as you can get away with and still coat the grains, just a teaspoon or two)

If I ever did cook rice at all, it was Minute Rice or even pre-cooked frozen rice from TJ. But now I cook tons of rice + other things in the rice cooker. It is fool-proof: measure your rice, measure your water, cover, press one switch, walk away, and 15 minutes later: RICE.

I miss doing this. I've taken to podcasting on buses in the past year which is just NOT the same thing and it's a bad habit. Music has taken over headphones at the gym where podcasts once ruled and thus books on the bus have been shoved to the side. Might be the solution to the lack of fiction I've read lately.

Xps just ask, and just be completely honest about your lack of skills. Cooking rice and pasta, sauteing veggies, marinating meats, boiling/steaming veggies, baking and pan-frying meat, roasting - these are all simple techniques that are (usually) easy to learn, and will provide you with many different kinds of meals. Get your friend to do each technique and explain why they are doing each piece of that technique. Then have them walk you through doing it yourself another time.

Just an idea! Also: alcohol should be involved in these lessons, if you think it'll help you not feel so pressured.

Also, Lex, even though I learned to cook at a very young age, I hated it for years bc I had to cook most of the family meals from 12-18. I've only started to really get more into it bc I am fortunate enough to have a v appreciative audience - it has def inspired me to cook much more adventurously than I ever imagined possible.

That seems like a really good interaction about gayness.

IMO in a perfect world being gay wouldn't be totally normal and unremarkable, but it would be perfectly OK. I would love it if it were OK to acknowledge that buttfucking and dating the same sex is sort of odd - and maybe even a little funny* - but in no way a bad thing. Meh, so you do sex and love in a way that most people don't, whatever.

Sharon Needles (from the  current season of Drag Race) was thre and at one point during her performance of Marilyn Manson's "Beautiful People" she collected all her tips and put them in a blender with a ton of vodka, which she later drank. This was actually later upstaged by a queen who sang "Part Of Your World" from The Little Mermaid while doing this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEn9r-8BK7I

which ended with her hanging limp like a drowned corpse 15 feet above the stage.  Holy shit.
