tonight's didn't feel as funny as the other recent episodes but it's definitely on a roll this season

It was the weakest episode, but I still laughed a number of times so it passes the test.

The puns on this show alone: Dogs in Heat, Yeah Buoy, etc...

not to make a comparison it can't possibly live up to but at its best Happy Endings gives me the 30 Rock feeling of a writer's room just shamelessly and gleefully cramming in every gag they can think of

Brent Musburger and Fred Savage cameos were pitch-perfect!

Also, I've learned that anytime Savage is directing an episode of anything, I'm going to like it.

Dave with the steak truck is really the weakest link in the show, imo. He's the David Schwimmer.

i don't know where else to put this but i had a really weird dream last night that i was chatting with damon wayans and explaining that i think my wife and kids was unfairly reviled and is due for a critical reevaluation.

"hangout comedy" -- is this a genre specialized in by people who can't write plots?

it's got about as much of what passes for plot in most other sitcoms, it's just more in the Seinfeld/Friends tradition of a bunch of friends hanging out in apartments and diners or whatever rather than being about a workplace or a household

Seinfeld often had intricate farcical plots that were classically structured, just with shorter scenes.

also i told him that 'claire's boyfriend stories' were a total waste of the show but junior was a comic genius.

i've only seen some of these (weird hulu embargo/backlog), but the faces they make are so weird and unreal.

still, i laughed.

the whole show is weird and unreal. that's why it took me so long to decide if i liked it; i had to get used to the artificiality and rhythms of the patter. but my verdict is it's awesome.

Yeah the slang and facial expressions are so far removed from anything actual real live people do that it makes Friends seem like a documentary by comparison, but its still consistently funny. The racist parrot was hilarious.

I'd been trying to put my finger on what seemed most 'off' about this show. I think this is it.

I love that they are playing old episodes I missed the first time around, Max's coming out episode was super hilarious

there is a definite element of surreality in the show that can generate detachment (I felt that in the first episode of it I watched, where they were going to a wedding of I think one of Penny's exes) but, as I believe I said upthread, the friend dynamics and back-and-forth in this show is scarily like the interactions between at least one circle of my friends, plus the actor chemistry really does fill in a lot of blanks for me

but then again, weird slightly surreal shows have always been my bag when it comes to modern comedy (RIP Better Off Ted)

my uncle wrote for In Living Color so being a kid and meeting the guy from "Men on Film" was an early life highlight (though as an incipient homosexual I also wanted to punch him, nice as he was). Anyway Jr clearly had the best moments in this ep.

The threesome stuff was terrible except it again showed how lame Dave is, and I like that they're comfortable with making him lame (maybe also due to that guy not being funny).

also: JAMES WOLK IS SO DREAMY, very Kyle Chandler-lite. I still wish Lone Star was on tv.

Max as hibernating bear was a treasure trove of sight/sound gags. Also, Alex seems to get funnier every week. When she popped up from the couch while Penny and Dave were in the kitchen, every line she had was gold.

True (especially, "He actually eats honey like that no matter what time of year it is"), but something felt just slightly off about tonight's episode. I'm not sure what it was, and I may well feel differently after a second viewing, but not every joke nailed its target.

Thought it was great tonight, but I'm a total Jane/Brad stan. Also big props to the rest of the cast for working so well together that the "cuuuuttee shirt" stuff worked.

At first I thought I was overrating it due to Community withdrawal (they share producers, and a few writers). But now I think I'm digging it on its own terms, particularly the Wayans/Coupe juggernaut.

Wayans in the tub with his suit on was funny enough, but the fact that he had his briefcase in there with him was next-level.

My only complaint about this show is the unnecessary wacky music bed, which I think must exist as a result of some network dictate since it's present in pretty much every ABC comedy/dramedy. But I admit that I have a general pet peeve about superfluous scores in movies and TV, so maybe it's just me.

Dave's self-satisfied "actually I am totally genius at this completely banal thing" smuggery just keeps going to elevated heights of funny to me. The Treme explanation from the Xmas episode and his interplay with his doppelganger this episode were amazing.

Knighton and Cuthbert could've been unwelcome vestiges of back when the show started off with the premise of having 'romantic leads' with 'on again/off again tension' but now that they've all but abandoned that concept except for when it's useful for jokes both have them have kept up with the rest of the cast and been very funny imo (xp)

Mindy Project's funny in that it can't decide whether its a wacky ensemble comedy about a ob-gyn clinic (pally's great but OMG who thought they needed another goofball?) or a show about the romantic life of the titular character from her pov. It rarely succeeds in seamlessly melding the two directions, but I find both worlds so enjoyable that the friction doesn't keep me from watching or anything.

that's the thing - as they never stop bringing in boyfriends or wacky new employees, i don't think it ever will! But I love the goofballs (even if they're scrambling to fit them all in an episode) and find Mindy & Michael to be really rich, novel leads for the romantic angle. If one of the parts didn't work for me (which seems to be the case for a lot of people), the chafing prob would keep me from watching.

nah Wayans is great on New Girl. imo one of the most inspiring stories in the recent history of network casting is how they went from having one token black guy in the pilot to having a different one in the series and then bringing back the original and having GASP two funny and distinct black guy characters in a network sitcom cast.

I don't think he's been awful by any means and I'm glad he's there, it just feels like the writers aren't sure what to do with him, which is why they keep going back to the well with his Cece storyline. Feel like he just kinda gets wasted in some episodes.

did anyone ever watch "marry me" (the david caspe show with casey wilson and ken marino)? was it any good? doesn't seem to be available on hulu

it was amusing, def a step down from Happy Endings, but i remember liking it well enough

never even heard of that, but "Black Monday" is quite good
