tonight's didn't feel as funny as the other recent episodes but it's definitely on a roll this season

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:01 (twelve years ago) link

It was the weakest episode, but I still laughed a number of times so it passes the test.

The puns on this show alone: Dogs in Heat, Yeah Buoy, etc...

encarta it (Gukbe), Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:06 (twelve years ago) link

not to make a comparison it can't possibly live up to but at its best Happy Endings gives me the 30 Rock feeling of a writer's room just shamelessly and gleefully cramming in every gag they can think of

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:10 (twelve years ago) link

Brent Musburger and Fred Savage cameos were pitch-perfect!

Also, I've learned that anytime Savage is directing an episode of anything, I'm going to like it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:10 (twelve years ago) link

yeah savage has direct episodes of so many great shows over the years

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:11 (twelve years ago) link

kinda loved how aimless and chill this episode was even if the brent musberger thing never evolved past wtf

'i guess you can call me a knitter with attitude'

brief pause

'what can i say penny my comedys always been edgy'

RR (Lamp), Thursday, 3 November 2011 05:39 (twelve years ago) link

The Coupe/Wayans double act is probably my favourite thing about this show.

encarta it (Gukbe), Thursday, 3 November 2011 05:53 (twelve years ago) link

coupe just fucking kills on this gd show man

RR (Lamp), Thursday, 3 November 2011 05:59 (twelve years ago) link

Gukbe and Lamp are both OTM.

They are all hilarious, but Coupe and Wayans are all-stars.

some dude also OTM re: not to make a comparison it can't possibly live up to but at its best Happy Endings gives me the 30 Rock feeling of a writer's room just shamelessly and gleefully cramming in every gag they can think of

Dave with the steak truck is really the weakest link in the show, imo. He's the David Schwimmer.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 November 2011 16:16 (twelve years ago) link

i don't know where else to put this but i had a really weird dream last night that i was chatting with damon wayans and explaining that i think my wife and kids was unfairly reviled and is due for a critical reevaluation.

Mordy, Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:07 (twelve years ago) link

"hangout comedy" -- is this a genre specialized in by people who can't write plots?

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:29 (twelve years ago) link

it's got about as much of what passes for plot in most other sitcoms, it's just more in the Seinfeld/Friends tradition of a bunch of friends hanging out in apartments and diners or whatever rather than being about a workplace or a household

some dude, Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:48 (twelve years ago) link

Seinfeld often had intricate farcical plots that were classically structured, just with shorter scenes.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:54 (twelve years ago) link

that's what i meant by 'what passes for plot'

some dude, Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:59 (twelve years ago) link

'hangout comedy' vs 'workplace comedy' or 'family comedy'

encarta it (Gukbe), Sunday, 13 November 2011 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

also i told him that 'claire's boyfriend stories' were a total waste of the show but junior was a comic genius.

nb i haven't seen this show in years and i certainly don't think any of it was funny and i don't remember a single claire boyfriend story.

i've only seen some of these (weird hulu embargo/backlog), but the faces they make are so weird and unreal.

still, i laughed.

j., Friday, 13 January 2012 17:38 (twelve years ago) link

the whole show is weird and unreal. that's why it took me so long to decide if i liked it; i had to get used to the artificiality and rhythms of the patter. but my verdict is it's awesome.

horseshoe, Friday, 13 January 2012 17:39 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah the slang and facial expressions are so far removed from anything actual real live people do that it makes Friends seem like a documentary by comparison, but its still consistently funny. The racist parrot was hilarious.

the somewhat scary thing is that, for all of the weirdness and unreality, I feel like this show captures the essence of my interactions with IRL friends more than any other show on television

Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Friday, 13 January 2012 17:41 (twelve years ago) link

Were Jane and Alex sisters at the beginning, or is it just a plot device they added later?

I'd been trying to put my finger on what seemed most 'off' about this show. I think this is it.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 2 February 2012 19:24 (twelve years ago) link

I love that they are playing old episodes I missed the first time around, Max's coming out episode was super hilarious

I want to talk about Penny's date but it so spoils it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but oh my god the writers were on a tear in this episode

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Friday, 3 February 2012 14:31 (twelve years ago) link

also it will never happen but a cross-show Happy Endings/New Girl meeting between Penny and Schmidt would be amahze

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Friday, 3 February 2012 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

I think this is why I have been able to get into it? There's something very cold and detached about it. xxp

Nicole, Friday, 3 February 2012 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

Man, I don't think "cold" applies to this show at all.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 3 February 2012 14:35 (twelve years ago) link

there is a definite element of surreality in the show that can generate detachment (I felt that in the first episode of it I watched, where they were going to a wedding of I think one of Penny's exes) but, as I believe I said upthread, the friend dynamics and back-and-forth in this show is scarily like the interactions between at least one circle of my friends, plus the actor chemistry really does fill in a lot of blanks for me

but then again, weird slightly surreal shows have always been my bag when it comes to modern comedy (RIP Better Off Ted)

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 9 February 2012 03:26 (twelve years ago) link

I'm starting to think he's funnier than his dad. Apples & oranges, sure, but Damon Jr. seems more adept at physical stuff and rapid-fire timing. And the fondue bit was genius.

Let A Man Come In And Do The Cop Porn (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 9 February 2012 03:27 (twelve years ago) link

i never found his dad funny. i remember an ep of My Wife and Kids where Damon Wayans spends the whole episode explaining to Junior how wack weed is in the uncoolest, condescending ways possible. jennifer freeman was cute tho so

Mordy, Thursday, 9 February 2012 03:29 (twelve years ago) link

I actually never saw MW&K, but remember Damon Sr.'s standup being pretty funny. He was also one of the (very, very few) high points of the 1985-86 season of SNL.

3some stuff was gross but everything else in the latest episode killed

(_()_) (Lamp), Friday, 10 February 2012 04:17 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i hated the threesome stuff but what are you going to do

horseshoe, Friday, 10 February 2012 04:18 (twelve years ago) link

although im still tickled by 'that restaurant is harder to get into than insert obvious joke here. the alt-comedy club downtown'

(_()_) (Lamp), Friday, 10 February 2012 04:18 (twelve years ago) link

my uncle wrote for In Living Color so being a kid and meeting the guy from "Men on Film" was an early life highlight (though as an incipient homosexual I also wanted to punch him, nice as he was). Anyway Jr clearly had the best moments in this ep.

The threesome stuff was terrible except it again showed how lame Dave is, and I like that they're comfortable with making him lame (maybe also due to that guy not being funny).

also: JAMES WOLK IS SO DREAMY, very Kyle Chandler-lite. I still wish Lone Star was on tv.

Max as hibernating bear was a treasure trove of sight/sound gags. Also, Alex seems to get funnier every week. When she popped up from the couch while Penny and Dave were in the kitchen, every line she had was gold.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 23 February 2012 04:24 (twelve years ago) link

True (especially, "He actually eats honey like that no matter what time of year it is"), but something felt just slightly off about tonight's episode. I'm not sure what it was, and I may well feel differently after a second viewing, but not every joke nailed its target.

this. Never found Hughes to be the least bit hat-tip worthy. This episode had its moments (as usual, those with Jane and Brad), but I found it kind of flat.

Casey Wilson's delivery on "My plates never grew together" was A+, though.

Knighton and Cuthbert could've been unwelcome vestiges of back when the show started off with the premise of having 'romantic leads' with 'on again/off again tension' but now that they've all but abandoned that concept except for when it's useful for jokes both have them have kept up with the rest of the cast and been very funny imo (xp)

USA Network? I'd like to see it happen, but who knows if it will.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 22:06 (eleven years ago) link

seems a bad fit. would love to see fxx pick it up, would fit in nicely there and give them something w/ a built in audience (kinda lol) that's not nearly as exhausted as sunny

balls, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 22:10 (eleven years ago) link

FX or FXX makes more sense, sure.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 22:14 (eleven years ago) link

I dunno how tv show buying works, but would a 20th Century Fox company buy a Sony production before cooking up their own?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 22:14 (eleven years ago) link

USA seems like a decent fit, and they get some of the best ratings for 'light cable fare' out there, would be a smart move if they're getting into half hour comedy.

Happy Endings wouldn't fit in at ALL with the FX comedies imo.

some dude, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 22:28 (eleven years ago) link

I just saw that USA is set to air Modern Family repeats beginning in the fall, so I could see them pairing that up with this.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

That might be part of the deal to get Modern Family.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 22:37 (eleven years ago) link

same snarky look at these awful ppl m.o. - post-seinfeld template. different in that it's decidedly less bro skewed than sunny or the league (and i'm guessing whatever other shows fxx will have)(seriously did the workaholics guys even pitch fx?), but if fxx wanted to broaden their audience w/o really changing their voice this would work. would like it in the fox tuesday slot even more. thought don't trust the b was the perfect partner tbh. has a network picking up another network's sloppy seconds ever really paid off? only example i can think of is jag (and when you throw in ncis wow did that pay off) but beyond that i can't think of anything that was an outright hit ie much bigger than buffy on upn.

As anticipated, TBS has won the first quarter, ranking as basic cable's #1 network in primetime delivery of adults 18-34 and adults 18-49. TBS capped the quarter with yet another weekly victory, this time among not only key adult demos, but also total viewers. TBS also ranked #1 in primetime among key adult demos for the month of March.

The TBS original comedy series Cougar Town garnered 2.3 million viewers in Live + 3 delivery last week, including 1.4 million adults 18-49 and 656,000 adults 18-34.

The Big Bang Theory ranked as basic cable's #1 off-net series for the quarter with total viewers and key adult demos. For the last week of the quarter, The Big Bang Theory accounted for 19 of basic cable's Top 20 sitcom telecasts with total viewers and adults 18-49, as well as 18 of the Top 20 with adults 18-34.

Jason Boso was ahead of the pack in 2006 when he and fellow culinary-school grads Quincy Hart and Steve Thompson co-founded Twisted Root Burger Co. in Dallas, one of the early high-quality, chef-driven burger bars. Last weekend Boso opened his latest concept, Truck Yard, in a 15,000-square-foot lot in Dallas’s Lower Greenville neighborhood. The place is like a sprawling backyard with picnic tables, fire puts and a converted mechanic’s shed turned bar and Steak Me Home Tonight, where they’re cooking sliced rib-eye cheesesteak sandwiches. BurgerBusiness.com pulled Boso away from the cheesesteak grill for a few minutes to give the lowdown on Truck Yard and its meaning for Twisted Root.

Mindy Project's funny in that it can't decide whether its a wacky ensemble comedy about a ob-gyn clinic (pally's great but OMG who thought they needed another goofball?) or a show about the romantic life of the titular character from her pov. It rarely succeeds in seamlessly melding the two directions, but I find both worlds so enjoyable that the friction doesn't keep me from watching or anything.

But I love the goofballs (even if they're scrambling to fit them all in an episode) and find Mindy & Michael to be really rich, novel leads for the romantic angle. If one of the parts didn't work for me (which seems to be the case for a lot of people), the chafing prob would keep me from watching.

The creator of Happy Endings has a new show that's gonna be on NBC, so this won't last long: http://tvline.com/2014/01/08/marry-me-nbc-pilot-happy-endings-david-caspe/

too bad Wayans Jr is already on New Girl, otherwise they could just cast him and Coupe

SHAUN (DJP), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 22:03 (ten years ago) link

Oh, I knew Casey Wilson got engaged, but I didn't realize it was to the guy who created Happy Endings. Anyway, as inferred in the article, I hope she winds up on the show.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 22:04 (ten years ago) link

That would be perfect.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 22:33 (ten years ago) link

i can't remember if he's in the credits (new girl barely has credits right?) but he's in the promo stuff w/ the other cast members. i think he's a recurring guest star or whatever heather locklear was on melrose place and whether he's on the show next year depends on whether his pilot gets picked up. i hope he stays tbh, he works well on the show and there's something quietly radical about having more than one 'black guy' in the gang.

kinder, Friday, 24 January 2014 11:15 (ten years ago) link

Coach is getting more & more Brad-esque on New Girl - totally killed it this week.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 24 January 2014 23:28 (ten years ago) link

xp agreed. I just rewatched it too. My initial instinct on watching the pilot was that show was OK but not particularly special, which is still true - it really got a lot better w/season 2. Still, I might go through S1 for kicks, I wasn't watching too keenly back then

Nhex, Saturday, 25 January 2014 04:05 (ten years ago) link

I don't remember exactly when S1 stepped up, but it was somewhere in there. Otherwise I wouldn't have been so hyped about S2 when it finally got on tv. I have the dvds. I should watch it again.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 25 January 2014 04:16 (ten years ago) link

i think it goes pretty fast. only the first one or two are a touch wacky-post-friends-sitcomy.

but s1 is short too.

some dude, Friday, 4 April 2014 16:33 (ten years ago) link

Eliza & Elisha need to stay on TV in perpetuity. maybe they can get the Letterman gig.

some dude, Friday, 4 April 2014 16:34 (ten years ago) link

Otm, i'd watch them do a tag team talk show host as the sisters from Happy Endings. That would rule.

I'm happy Pally's ended up on The Mindy Project, he's pretty good there. It's a shame the New Girl writers have no clue what to do with Wayans.

an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 April 2014 17:03 (ten years ago) link

nah Wayans is great on New Girl. imo one of the most inspiring stories in the recent history of network casting is how they went from having one token black guy in the pilot to having a different one in the series and then bringing back the original and having GASP two funny and distinct black guy characters in a network sitcom cast.

some dude, Friday, 4 April 2014 17:07 (ten years ago) link

I don't think he's been awful by any means and I'm glad he's there, it just feels like the writers aren't sure what to do with him, which is why they keep going back to the well with his Cece storyline. Feel like he just kinda gets wasted in some episodes.

an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 April 2014 17:10 (ten years ago) link

yeah but that's the case with everybody on that show whenever they decide to refocus on Jess/Nick/Schmidt, before that they gave him a lot of screen time/plots

Nhex, Friday, 4 April 2014 17:20 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, that ties into my larger problem with this recent season in that the Jess/Nick stuff was eating up way too much unfunny time and giving all of the other characters short shrift.

omg what does this meeeeeaaaaannnnn https://twitter.com/happywrites/status/563844694820405248

like, half of the Happy Endings cast have left their post-HE shows (Wayans, Pally) or their shows have been cancelled (Coupe)

though there's still the other three, but honestly save Wilson, who I also liked, the other two who have work lined up were the weakest so I'm fine with a new, streamlined Happy Endings with just Wayans, Coupe, and Pally

I realize I'm getting far too ahead of myself here

Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Saturday, 7 February 2015 19:55 (nine years ago) link

If anyone thinks that series Elisha Cuthbert is on will last beyond a few airings, they're mistaken. And I haven't been following Marry Me at all, but I'd have to think Casey Wilson could pull double duty since her husband's the boss and also created Happy Endings.

I haven't seen Zachery Knighton since the last episode of Happy Endings.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 7 February 2015 20:21 (nine years ago) link
