slow news day I guess
The latest incarnation of the My Little Pony franchise has attracted an unexpected demographic: Adult men. The men, who call themselves "bronies," have formed an extensive online community, including a roughly 100-member group in Portland.
They're self-described geeks, nerds or video gamers in their teens to mid-30s. They discovered My Little Pony after noticing a glut of pony-related activity while browsing Internet forums. Curious, they checked out the show and got hooked.
"I've gotten raised eyebrows from friends," says Jim West, a 20-year-old brony from Olympia.
But don't call them girly men. Yes, some bronies are sensitive types. But they also rock climb and play sports, have girlfriends and maintain active social lives.

i have a student who is a "brony", he looks and acts like a cross between data and wesley crusher. he receives educational support for asperger's syndrome but he really doesn't need it, he seems less disabled on a social level and more disinterested ... anyway he spends all of his spare time in class - which is quite a bit, he's super bright - drawing male my little ponies and writing fan fic about them
the weirdest part about it is that he doesn't seem to catch any shit about it from other students

I haven't watched any of these, but Powerpuff Girls definitely had crossover appeal and in-jokes for adult audiences. There are also dudes who are really into animation stuff regardless so... this doesn't seem that odd considering the writer and context.
There has to be some sort of version of Rule 34 that also states that if there's an entertainment media, there is a group of men into it somewhere.

Derpy
Kind: PegasusSex: Female
Derpy in the episode Sonic Rainboom
Derpy Hooves is the fan-given name of a lavender grey Pegasus pony given by the show's internet following due to her having a cross-eyed "derpy" expression in the first episode. The name has since been adopted by the crew and Hasbro. Starting with Feeling Pinkie Keen, the show's crew began giving the pony crossed eyes intentionally, as a nod to the fans. The character is addressed by Rainbow Dash in The Last Roundup as Derpy, where she speaks for the first time. The scene was later altered so Rainbow Dash no longer names Derpy, and her voice has been changed.
The face that started it all.
OriginAlert viewers of the show noticed a googly-eyed Pegasus in the series's first episode, standing in the background in the crowd in Twilight Sparkle's welcoming party. After the image was captured and posted on 4chan's comics and cartoons board /co/, fans began speculating of the nature of this odd pony.[1] The name she was given, Derpy Hooves, is derived from the slang term "derp", which is associated with someone who behaves in a silly manner and is often connected with crossed eyes.
Derpy in Feeling Pinkie Keen.
Wall EyesThis gray Pegasus with a bubbles cutie mark was one of several background ponies, chosen from a palette and placed in the scenes on the whim of layout artists. At first, the pony's face wasn't supposed to be visible in that particular scene, but a later layout change uncovered it.[2] Jayson Thiessen, the supervising director of the show, stated that he noticed and was amused by her expression. Since Hasbro had already given the episode green light, he didn't order fixing Derpy's eyes.[3] Thiessen relayed in a Q&A that he was so delighted after discovering popularity of Derpy that he requested altering Derpy's eyes in all episodes that hadn't been sent to the Hub yet.[3]
First officially licensed Derpy merchandise, from WeLoveFine.com
NameLauren Faust has acknowledged the fan following of Derpy. Before the name Derpy was used by the production crew, Faust stated that in one of the unaired episodes at the time, Winter Wrap Up, there is a mention of a "featherbrained" Pegasus named Ditzy Doo whose appearance is never established on-screen, and should Ditzy make an appearance the show may assign Derpy's design to her.[4] Faust later stated that it seems the name has "landed on Derpy Hooves."[5]
Even though background ponies have no official names, an animator from the Philippine studio working on the show said that Derpy was nicknamed Stoneface, Bubbles, Bubblehead, and Ditzy by the crew.[6] Thiessen later relayed that the Canadian crew has adopted the name Derpy.[7][8]
Derpy is featured in her Nightmare Night paper bags costume in the Castle Creator flash game, with the file name for her asset containing the word "Derpy".[9] A December 2011 update to the game contained another Derpy asset, wearing a reindeer cap and a red nose, this time with its file name containing the phrase "DH_definitely_canon".[10] The day Hearth's Warming Eve aired, The Hub's Facebook page posted a message encouraging readers to "spot fan favorite Derpy" in the episode.[11] She is called "Derpy" on-screen in The Last Roundup, detailed below.
Charity auctionLauren Faust participated in a charity auction for the 2011 Japan relief effort by donating several of her My Little Pony Friendship is Magic production sketches. In addition to sketches drawn in 2008, she drew a new sketch of Derpy, which sold for 2,151 USD.[12] The character was explicitly called Derpy Hooves by the auctioneer.
MerchandisingOfficially licensed apparel sporting Derpy was first made available on August 2011 at the online store WeLoveFine,[13] though the store carries fan-designs which refer to various characters by various fan-given names. More designs were later made available on WeLoveFine and at Hot Topic retail stores.
Muffins!
As a Background PonyDerpy first appears in the first episode of the series in the background of several scenes and, as noted above, makes her googly-eyed appearance at Twilight Sparkle's welcoming party.
Derpy can be seen throughout the season trotting through a park, helping with storm preparations, participating in the Running of the Leaves, visiting Ponyville's market, and more. She is one of the ponies admiring Pinkie Pie's "baked bads" in Applebuck Season, delivering the line "muffins" among the crowd, along with Minuette and Amethyst Star, whose mouths also match the spoken line. She appears with intentionally crossed eyes in Feeling Pinkie Keen; when Twilight spies on Pinkie Pie, a series of objects falls on her head: a flower pot, an anvil, a cart of hay and finally a piano. A camera pan reveals that the items were dropped by Derpy and her friend Raindrops, who are hovering next to a movers' truck. In Green Isn't Your Color, she is heard gasping in shock at Fluttershy's catwalk antics.
Wrestling with the Mayor
As a Scripted CharacterDerpy appears in nineteen episodes of season one as a background character. For season two, she has gained a scripted-character status rather than an arbitrary background pony, and she is considered a "Where's Waldo"-type challenge for the fans.[14]
In the remastered version of the opening sequence that is first used in Lesson Zero, she appears in the top window of the first train car.
She is one of the ponies under the effects of Twilight Sparkle's spell on her doll, Smarty Pants, in Lesson Zero. When Princess Celestia removes the spell from everyone, Derpy finds herself fighting with the Mayor, and returns to her derped-face self. In the photo on the right her face is the same face shown in the very first episode of season one.
Derpy is dressed in several brown paper bags in Luna Eclipsed, and participates in Applejack's apple bob activity during Nightmare Night with Golden Harvest. However, while bobbing for apples she accidentally pulls the plug, causing all the water in the bob to go down the drain.
Filly Derpy in The Cutie Pox
She makes a brief cameo in Sisterhooves Social among the crowd listening to Granny Smith's announcement. In The Cutie Pox, a wall-eyed Pegasus filly with the same color scheme as Derpy appears briefly for one shot in the schoolyard, with most of her body obscured by Apple Bloom and another filly. Derpy makes a brief appearance in the doorway to Fluttershy's chicken coop in May the Best Pet Win!, an episode otherwise devoid of background ponies.
She appears briefly in The Mysterious Mare Do Well among the crowd cheering after Rainbow Dash saves the old folks falling on the balcony. She appears in Sweet and Elite along with many other ponies during a shot in the song Becoming Popular, wearing the same paper bag that was part of her costume in Luna Eclipsed, in addition to a pearl necklace. She pops out of a well in-between Heartstrings and Bon Bon in Secret of My Excess. She rides the train to Canterlot in Hearth's Warming Eve. Later, she pops out from behind the curtain to wave at the audience before the show. She walks away sad afterwards when the Stage Manager stops her. At the end of the episode, she talks in the background with Amethyst Star.
She appears frequently throughout the musical sequence The Flim Flam Brothers in the episode The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000, as well as in the crowd watching the competition. She appears in Hearts and Hooves Day in three village shots, one standing next to an unknown filly and twice standing next to Doctor Whooves on the bridge. In A Friend in Deed, she appears twice, first flying upside down in the snow globe Pinkie Pie finds in Cranky Doodle Donkey's things and the second time by a stand in Ponyville square with two other ponies.
Derpy with Rainbow Dash in The Last Roundup.
Speaking RoleDerpy has a significant speaking role in The Last Roundup. The scene starts with Rainbow Dash getting the tip of her tail singed by a lightning bolt, coming from a gray storm cloud that Derpy is bouncing on. Dash tells her, "Now, careful, Derpy. Don't wanna do any more damage than you've already done", pointing to the broken and crashing roof of the Ponyville town hall. Derpy replies, "I just don't know what went wrong" and shocks herself from another bolt of lightning from the cloud she's bouncing on. She flies by Rainbow Dash and compliments her work, but bumps into a pillar, and sends it hurtling to the ground. Rainbow Dash tries to stop it but she smashes through the floor with the pillar. Derpy sticks her head in the hole asking if Rainbow Dash is okay and asks if there's anything she can do to help, but Rainbow Dash flies up and tells her to sit there and do nothing. When Derpy sits down in response, the floor below her starts to crack and she falls through, grabbing Rainbow Dash and pulling her down along for the ride. When the Mayor gives her speech in honor of Applejack, Derpy sticks out of the hole in the broken floor and cheers for Applejack, but she lets go and falls down once again. Her eyes are crossed through the majority of the scene.
ProductionDerpy is voiced by Tabitha St. Germain in the original cut.[15] Germain was not aware at the time that Derpy is female and voiced her "with a neighbor's son in mind."[16] The episode (and Derpy's scene) was storyboarded by Sabrina Alberghetti and Nicole Wang.[17][18] Alberghetti was reminded of herself in the portrayal of Derpy as an "accident-prone klutz".[19]
Subsequent AlterationThe episode was removed from iTunes a week after its release, and put back up on 24 February 2012, with Derpy's scene altered: a few words are ommited from the dialog, in particular Rainbow Dash does not name Derpy; Derpy's voice is different and more feminine; and Derpy's eyes are not as acutely crossed in a few of the shots in the scene. This alteration does not appear in The Friendship Express DVD.
AppearancesThe following charts details Derpy's appearances in the show, using approximate times from various videos available online.

Wasn't there some sort of controversy where some group thought the character was offensive, or the producers panicked and thought it might be?
The other possibility is that they don't want brony influence that obvious in the show

I have seen this episode (like I said, it is my 4 yr old's favorite show), and I thought it was offensive -- the voice seemed like the one that bullies use when they mock retarded people. I was really uncomfortable with it.

DERPY is a word that teenagers use to make fun of each other
it would be a bit like having a character in an 80s show called HOSER or something like that
maybe a little rough for the target audience of my little pony?
― the late great, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 16:34 (1 year ago) Permalink
derpy means "retarded," though? also did anyone who wasnt canadian say hoser in the 80s?

yes, thanks to Bob and Doug MacKenzie
― Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 16:41 (1 year ago) Permalink
derpy means "awkward" or "stupid", not literally "retarded", though kids use it the same way i used "retarded" in high school (ie not literally meaning retarded)
if you have ever made the comical noise DURRRRR to indicate confusion or foolishness then you would be familiar with the root of the word
i guess the question is whether DURRRRR refers to retarded people or not

Bronies, go fuck yourselves:
I live in West Virginia, and the word nigger has no power here... because it's used so often by everyone ON everyone in the friendly sense of "wazzup mah nigga?!" that the offensive meaning is not valid. Derpy Hooves could have done this for the "retarded" meaning, render it archaeic and obsolete in language, overall improving the Englisih language by removing a meaninglessly offensive word.

Don't know if it's changed tack since it was on in the early 00's but I didn't know Powerpuff Girls was considered the same as MLP... Always saw it in the same league as Dexter's Lab, Fairly Odd Parents, Spongebob etc i.e. Stuff that's actually pretty funny/appeals to grown ups on a regular level as well as kids. Some of the characters: Mojojojo, HIM, the Professor etc are pure comedy.

It's clearly leaning towards ultra-sicko territory and not just a halfway house for bi-curious-sickos. Sure the internet is awful, but admitting to being a /b/tard is admitting that your closest home on the web is one of the darkest abscesses of filth and likewise your mentality has got to be pretty stuffed up with shit as well.
I can imagine bronies as people that appreciate anonymous for supposedly starting or at the very least encouraging /b/rony love. But then it goes either one of two ways. 1) Bronies feel like home in a place where people try to outscum eachother or 2) they don't know /b/ or only know it in passing. Frankly I would like to know whether bronies are genuine /b/tards or not. Maybe some of these brony kids are secret sickos - well much more sick than your average joe.

I've watched the show. It was good but nothing that compelled me to want to watch it again & again or devote myself to a community of similar fans of the show. I want to call it weird, but the truth is at this point I'm the only economically comfortable white male between the ages of 14-59 that I know that isn't into this. Ya jeez, I don't think I know anyone who's even seen this new show unless they were babysitting or something. My friends probably all remember the original My Little Pony from when they were kids, but AFAIK none of them have the amount of nostalgia attached to the show that would propel them to be fans of "Friendship is Magic."
Is it like, subtly subversive like the Powder-Puff Girls? I guess I'll have to watch an episode to see what the appeal is. Unless the appeal really is just "hey, these cartoon ponies make my dick twitch."

had a six-year-old niece and her family over this morning, so we watched a bunch of MLP. it's pretty good! excellent character and background designs (reminiscent of powerpuff girls & g tartakovsky), ambitious & artful visuals, constant jokes & slapstick and at least one song in most episodes. scripts are smart without being showy about it, deliberately light and silly, but they they take the fantasy/adventure trappings quite seriously. it's not subversive like the powerpuff girls or aggressively hip like adventure time, but it's a good deal more emotionally resonant than either. interesting mix of pretty-fetish girl stuff and messages of collective empowerment and self-respect. one of the most appealing things about "ponyville" is that it's a place where everyone is celebrated for their differences and no one is excluded. i can definitely see why it's been a hit outside its apparent target demographic.

Yeah, I find it really frustrating that I have to defend my enjoyment of this rather cute show because of some obsessive fans ruining it for everybody. Like, it's one thing to enjoy watching something, it's quite another to define yourself by that activity (see: Star Trek, Dr. Who, Star Wars, insert anime title here). That said, bronies are comparable to furries – people who are emotionally, physically, or geographically isolated/abnormal who want to find an accepting community that they can belong to. Mostly harmless.

I love it when people date each other because of looks. Its really pathetic when people judge you based on looks or interests. And then there is that guy like Brandon Cyrus who calls everyone beautiful, then only asks the cute ones to text him. If you are one of those people who use women just for sex, money, or are dating them just because of popularity and looks, go fuck yourself. You are a pathetic excuse for a man/woman. And this world would be better off without you. A good example of a relationship is me and Samantha. She listens to shitty ass music to the point where I want to burn down a church. But I love her no matter what.
Want to know why some men treat women like shit? It is because of those self centered girls who think they are the greatest person in the world because they are popular or pretty. You aren't, and you should go fuck yourself. You are a fucking women, so act like you have a place in society. Sexism towards women is because of these types of girls. I myself am sexist towards women, but only those types of women. Women like Hillary Clinton or Oprah have each and every bit of my respect. /end rant/

The plushie mentioned upthread is apparently an unique item that MLP fan "Hoppip" of Surrey, UK has handmade and is selling through The Dealers Den ("Furry Auctions...And more!"). Starting price was GBP 55.00, and it's now up to GBP 125.50, with 15 bids. That's already getting pretty close to my bid ceiling, and with nearly six days to go, I might have to dip into next month's rent just to stay in the running. Wish me luck!
A hand-made plushie of Lyra from the TV show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. She's about 19" tall and made from fleece - perfect for hugging! Eyes and cutie mark are embroidered directly onto the fabric (by http://ethepony.blogspot.co.uk/ ). She's stuffed with fire retardant fiber filling - the same stuff you find in pillows. She took about a week to make, on and off. Comes from a smoke-free home. The plushie also comes with removable handmade trousers and cotton + elastic underpants. This is also the very first MLP plushie to feature a special hole in her butt that you can stick your penis in! It has a circumference of a little over 6.5" and a depth of about 6". You can pull it inside-out for cleaning but it is highly recommended you don't finish inside her as fleece can be quite difficult to clean! The clothing also serves as a great way to keep the hole concealed so you don't have to keep her hidden in a closet somewhere! If you would like the plushie without this "feature", just tell me after the auction and I will remove it free of charge. Please treat her gently, I will not accept returns or repairs for any rough play you get up to.

Could be mandals, definitely bonus points. The dude under there is probably naively pure, but would love to hire him for a year, feed him drugs and have him go berserk in costume and follow me around as I went about my day. Then I'd get bored and fire him and his fellow bronies would find him lying in the gutter, his costume torn and soiled. Then they'd take him in and try to rehabilitate him back to broniedom, but the man they knew would only ever exist again in their memories. One day his fellow bronies would return to a ransacked apartment, never to see him again.

An article on Monday about Jack Robison and Kirsten Lindsmith, two college students with Asperger syndrome who are navigating the perils of an intimate relationship, misidentified the character from the animated children’s TV show “My Little Pony” that Ms. Lindsmith said she visualized to cheer herself up. It is Twilight Sparkle, the nerdy intellectual, not Fluttershy, the kind animal lover.

ANDREW W.K. CONFIRMS MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKING APPEARANCE AT MY LITTLE PONY CONVENTION
ANDREW ANSWERS “WHAT WOULD PINKIE PIE DO?” AT CANTERLOT GARDENS 2012!
New York, NY - (June 12, 2012): Rock 'n' roll party man, Andrew W.K., has announced that this fall, he will bring his special brand of fun to Canterlot Gardens in Ohio, the premiere My Little Pony fan convention! Celebrating the national resurgence of My Little Pony popularity since the release of Hasbro’s “Friendship Is Magic” cartoon, W.K. will attempt to answer the question “What Would Pinkie Pie Do?” In this panel, W.K. who's beloved for such anthemic songs as “Party Hard” and “We Want Fun,” considers himself to be the living embodiment of the positive, party pony, Pinkie Pie, and will talk about how to make your work as fun as your party and your party as important as your work.
W.K. has spoken in the past of his support for the growing “Brony” sub-culture, which is the unexpected male obsession with My Little Pony and “Friendship Is Magic”. This fan-base if comprised of men in their teens, up to 40 years of age. Lauren Faust, who helped to draw adults to Cartoon Network with her work on The Power Puff Girls and Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends, also helped to revamp the My Little Pony franchise with sophisticated writing and nuanced characters. The results are drawing animation fans of nontraditional ages, genders, and lifestyles.

Ah, I just saw that screencap on tumblr. The full profile makes the fakeness clear.
I did see a kid who looked very similar to him (wearing a fedora and a my little pony t-shirt) when I was out last weekend -- I know we have joked about the fedoras but I didn't really expect a brony to be that stereotypical-looking.

nah fetishizing is poor socialization
example
1) fetishizing the tit2) good socialization = not treating all girls like mom3) ok gotta find non-mom figure4) fetishizing the pretty girl that's nice to you, then getting pissed when you find out she makes out with jocks5) good socialization = not treating all girls like virgin/whore
it's a chicken and egg thing

i think one of the big things in nerd culture is this idea that 1) other people don't understand me 2) i have a fascinating story to tell you

i guess i see old school sci-fi freaks as being like trainspotters, or rock polishers, ham radio junkies, avid fly fishermen, numismatists, bird watchers, etc. weirdos who happened to fetishize this one weird thing, but who weren't, for the most part, fetishizing their own ostracism (consequence of poor socialization). if anything, they seemed to be trying to escape it. perhaps that's an overly romantic notion.

no actually contenderizer i think you're on to something esp w/r/t bronies
but then i wouldn't exactly put rock polishers, ham radio junkies, fishermen, birdwatchers and numismatists in the same category
a lot of rock polishers are geologists and gemnologists whose hobby is an outgrowth of their work
birdwatchers are nature enthusiasts and might belong in the same category as dudes who make lists of technical bouldering spots in their state they have to hit up
fishermen consider themselves sportsmen and in any case they eat and/or give away the fish they catch
trainspotters and numismatists might be closest, but afaict they're not writing slashfic about their pursuits
i think the comparison to old-school sci-fi fandom might be closest, or perhaps even to comic books. there seems to something about slashfic that is crucial to understanding the brony thing and my understanding is that slashfic dates back to ... the 70s? late 70s?
but slashfic has definitely picked up in popularity, esp if you count something like the millions of licensed novels about every last character in the mos eisley cantina or in the bowels of deep space 9

Ultimately I think there are a ton of people out there in well-off countries who have strong logical skills but aren't very intelligent otherwise. And all of those people find their way onto the internet. And we've all been through high school, I would guess most of them are outcasts who cynically disregard everything they're supposed to learn and look for like-minded people on SomethingAwful or Reddit to teach them the "true way"; in other words the emotionally stunted teaching the emotionally stunted. You know, the three A's: Ayn Rand, Atheism, and ron pAul. I was the same way for a while when it came to poker; I like to think of it as more useful than watching pony cartoons because I was at least able to put myself through school that way. But the 2+2 boards were like, 10% well-adjusted, intelligent individuals (and many of them were successful) and 90% were your typical goon/brony/Reddit "men's rights" enthusiast, and I doubled down on this by posting a lot on the sports/sports betting forums which were more like 100% these people. You know, people who would screencap girls they show in the crowd on TV, then other idiots who would say things like "her nose is lolhueg, 5/10, I bang chicks hotter than that every week" And you get a thrill out of it, being able to talk in terms that your average person (you know, the people who rejected you in high school or think you're strange) would never understand, about something they probably wouldn't be any good at. Yes I know this is a distorted view of the world. And I know that plenty of people here with frogbs.txt saved on their HD probably think "dude, you ARE that guy". But I always had good friends and people to drink with, and in all honesty that kind of saved my life in a manner of speaking. I was never really an outcast. I stopped being bullied in 4th grade. I always was kind of on the fringe. Like, I've always had good friends on both sides of the spectrum. I look at my stepbrother now and wonder about his future - he's 18, drives a Mustang his Dad bought for him, and spends his life on Reddit and Facebook posting about how much he hates Christians, how he hates his sister talking to her newborn baby "like a retard" while he plays Call of Duty, how his Dad (who has cancer!!) is an idiot, how the whole world is wrong and how people like him are the only ones with any real values. I don't know if he has a single friend that he knows in real life. It's just so much easier to dismiss other points of view than it is to try to learn something from them. Plus, it's good for your ego, and you've got dozens of online friends who will back you up. Like, this guy NEEDS to be a brony right now. Okay, what he really needs is to get wasted and get out of his shell and actually have fun interacting with live people, but in his mind, this is a big ass deal. If my brony-littered FB feed told me anything, it's that they do fetishize poor socialization because apparently to interact with them on a normal (or illogical) level is to sell out part of what makes you better than anyone else. If you do speak, speak only in memes that nobody understands, because that only reinforces how much more advanced you are. And so on.

I was part of a weird community myself when I was like, 14 years old. I wanted to be a cartoonist but I was way better at drawing animals than humans. So I looked up a bunch of "anthro" art to help me with my own drawings and eventually joined an IRC community to get some pointers. Anyways one of them was a colorist and she offered to color in this strip I made and it was really good! Then I looked at her other work. Man, I wish you could have seen my face. Nowadays I don't think any of us would bat an eye at it because the internet has desensitized us all but the whole shock of "whoa, someone actually drew this, and you're one of them!" was tough to reconsile. Like, I thought some of the other art I had seen was really cool, but to realize that the end result of this whole thing was basically pornography? Like I said, I was 14. I didn't know any better. But there was really a sadness among everything there, nobody seemed overtly proud of this, and most of the chat steered towards stuff like clinical depression. Kind of a far ways away from the racism/rageface/sexism/"deal with it" culture of today. Actually, they seemed like pretty decent people. Nobody thought my cartoons were any good though.

Why, I dare say it's as though multiple people enjoy the show. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Neil Cicierega: Yeah, I know it's the stuff of the internet. It really illustrates how thoughtlessly men will reappropriate anything and everything. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Some guy: But not all bronies are like that. Neil Cicierega: you gotta call each other out on this kind of thing more often. That goes for all groups. Don't let your friends be dipshits! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Neil Cicierega: The show's designed to be a better alternative to the crap little girls are usually fed. So of course, grown men, who already have plenty of media marketed to them, come in and completely overshadow the intended audience, and litter it with the same tired humor and loutishness as every other male-oriented community. Something meant as an antidote to girls' usual gender normative entertainment has been turned into yet another sausage party. Me: Yes, because the little girls who watch the show are effected by the actions of 4chan. Which is surprising, since even the majority of the adult brony fanbase isn't effected by the actions of 4chan.Some brony: Most bronies (sadly not all) generally do try to warn you what you might see on their tumblr or something. So they really aren't doing anything to people who don't want to look at what they post. If you were offended by rape you most likely won't click on a link that goes to somewhere called Princess Molestia. I understand why you would find it weird that something Princess Molestia exists. She is, in her entirety, a rape joke. I apologize for being such a dick. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Neil Cicierega: I didn't mention fetishes. Actually, I was talking about rape jokes. For a show about love and tolerance, you'd think Bronies would do more to speak out against fellow Bronies who engage in brazen rejections of sensitivity.

I was very put out by the season finale of MLP, it seemed to pander to the message that being a princess should be a girl's life goal. The rest of the series isn't like that, so that's why I didn't mind my kid watching it. Is Disney already having an influence on this show?

Props and Cosplay PolicyWe love to see our attendees dress up in all sorts of creative and interesting costumes! However, for safety's sake, we have some rules about what costumes and props are acceptable at BronyCon. When planning your costume, please keep the following rules in mind:Decency and Appropriateness: Congoer attire must cover all areas normally covered by a swimsuit. Costumes and props must also be PG-rated. Hate speech is not permitted on attire or props in any language.Costume Safety: Costumes must not be dangerous to anyone who bumps into them accidentally.Volume: Costumes and props that make noise must have volume controls and should be kept at an appropriate volume. The owners of such props and costumes must turn down or mute the volume when asked to by Security.Live Steel: Live steel props are any props crafted from metal with a pointed end or blade-like edge, whether blunt or sharp. All such objects are strictly prohibited in convention spaces. This rule does not apply to objects with only the appearance of metal, such as wooden swords wrapped in aluminum foil.Weapons: Real weapons such as maces, axes, or batons must be tightly peacebound or otherwise disabled, and are not allowed if they cannot be disabled. Projectile weapons such as bows, slings, or crossbows must be disabled and unloaded. Bows must be unstrung or strung with a flimsy and loose material such as twine. No bolts or arrows may be carried as part of a costume unless they are fake, not fireable, and not sharp or dangerous.Gun-like Props: Gun-like props are required to have orange tips. Airsoft guns must never be loaded and must be disabled, and no ammunition may be carried on the congoer carrying the airsoft.Guns: Real firearms, even if disabled or unloaded are strictly prohibited in all convention spaces. If you are an off-duty law enforcement officer carrying your sidearm through convention space, please come see the Head of Security when you enter the con so there are no unfortunate misunderstandings.Any prop being used in an unsafe or threatening manner may be confiscated by Security. Security may ask you at any time to put a prop away or change out of a costume based on its acceptability. The Head of Security has the final say as to the acceptability of any prop or costume.

Have we finally figured out what Bronies are yet? Are they like doofus steampunkers or are they some sort of new and weird self-selecting band of misogynistic ultraconservatives who sooth their cognitive dissonance with cartoon pony fluff.
And how closely connected is it to Furries? Seems pretty close... A lot closer than like, adult tabletop gamers who I've found mostly to be into the tactical/warfare "I am a military genius! you are now overwhelmed by my chaos marines bwahaahaa!" aspect of those games. Or comic book collectors who are equally addicted to male "soap operas" like Dexter and stuff and also collect DVD sets.
I mean they're just chibi horses. How has that developed into a whole "thing"?

oh, no, sorry, they mostly self-ID'd as "brony" but the fact that it's got "bro" in the name meant caveats from all? So one said something almost exactly like "obviously i'm not what you think of when you say "brony" - i'm not a cis white straight dude who etc", but was still ok with "brony" as the fan term. And then there were one or two who said something along the lines of "well, i would call myself a my little pony fan, rather than 'brony', but i don't mind".

as far as the direct influence, it's totally a product of 'moe'-ism - a component - and really the idealized object - of the hikkikimori/NEET thing, catching on more and more with gamer-y types in America
brony culture came directly out of 4chan's basement-dweller scene, which was built on anime-fandom, and is still informed by a lot of its slang and themes. that post-anime worship of cute/comforting escapist objects
larger problem?... I guess, like with the Japanese origins of NEET-ism, it's obv about men who feel they can't compete, the loss of a sense of purpose/roles (which is probably why a lot of these guys are into the fedora look too, they're reaching for this lost sense of manhood even as they're departing from/avoiding it)
― Chris S, Saturday, 27 April 2013 22:30 (3 weeks ago) Permalink
i'm sure we've discussed this before on ilx but i've always been confused by the 4chan tension between a) MLP, anime/manga, other sincere idealized worship of sundry pop culture and b) trolling, gore threads, unwelcoming subculture, anonymous-type shit. i guess they both come together in misogyny.
― Mordy, Saturday, 27 April 2013 22:51 (3 weeks ago) Permalink
and in misdirected young male energy in general. get a bunch of young men who need to get out of the house together for an extended period of time, and there's going to be this spectrum of an idealized 'cute' idealism/escapism (of the love object unconsummated, or relationships at all for that matter) on one end, and total rage/oblivion on the other (no purpose, no career).
I just hope most of them grow out of it. I like to think that they just need to get out and socialize more, but that's where the consumerism/gaming/anime/Internet-addiction comes in, which I think is probably the real problem here

that post-anime worship of cute/comforting escapist objects
i love adventure time (which makes me one of the worst people in the world, apparently), and this is undeniably a big part of the appeal: the retreat to something safe, comforting and arguably infantile. but that's not the whole of it. i mean, i don't watch bubble guppies or my little pony. i like cartoons, like drawing & design in general, but what i like most about adventure time is the freedom the show's producers clearly extend to the artists and writers who create it. it can go anywhere, do anything, and almost always looks great in the process. the individual sensibilities and styles of its various creators are clearly visible in the episodes they produce. it's subversive and wildly psychedelic without being jarringly cruel or cynical. i wish i were involved somehow. it's the only thing currently on television that strikes me as "real art", something in which i can discern vision, personality and focused craft.
this is tangential to the thread topic, but i hate to see my favorite show lumped in with all the gross, fedora-wearing brony crap.

adventure time isn't remotely MLP-ish tho, it is definitely actively pursuing an audience of both children and adults. it gets reviewed by the avclub every week. i don't think there's any inherent "shame" expected by watching it, as bronies seem to think of their obsession
― infirm neophytic child (zachlyon), Sunday, 28 April 2013 02:00 (3 weeks ago) Permalink
yeah you know it's 2013 why would anybody hassle a grown man who likes my little pony unless they were drawing attention to themselves and defending themselves in advance?
― resulting paste of mashed cheez poops (silby), Sunday, 28 April 2013 02:13 (3 weeks ago) Permalink
i don't think bronies are real, i think they are just trolling. why would someone be obsessed with my little pony? it doesn't even make sense.

i can kind of see being into a nostalgic cartoon but these people seem to make it a central part of their identity in a way that is ridiculous/insane. like, i am a fan of bob dylan: own all the albums, see him live, have scores of song lyrics memorized, but if someone called me a bob-ie or dylanbro i would tell them to not call me that... this thing about identifying with cultural products you like is sort of weird to me.
― Pat Finn, Sunday, 28 April 2013 02:55 (3 weeks ago) Permalink
probably the urge to define oneself via cultural consumption is the real issue here, and it is the main problem these bronies are suffering from. they need to know where they "fit in"; it's not enough to just be a person in the world. as far as those guys overlap with the fedora/PUA/MRA community, the pigeonholing thinking relates to the gross, darwinian language they use when describing status: alpha, beta, etc. if they just cut that shit out of their thinking, and considered their identity fundamentally in terms of themselves as individuals, they would be better off i think.
― Pat Finn, Sunday, 28 April 2013 03:06 (3 weeks ago) Permalink
i think kurt vonnegut discussed this fallacy in cat's cradle; he called these false identites/communities "granfalloons."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granfalloon
― Pat Finn, Sunday, 28 April 2013 03:09 (3 weeks ago) Permalink
The more pertinent question would be what conditions creates "bronies" in the first place.
Society fails young men by indoctrinating them into a patriarchal thought process that defines masculinity by sexual prowess and social facility. With the increasing atomization of human interaction under late capitalism (and especially the niche consumer culture of the internet), more and more young males are failing to live up to these patriarchal ideals. But instead of this creating an opportunity for young men to redefine gender roles for themselves, it leads them to embrace reactionary impulses born from self-hatred and sexual frustration, which is projected outward as misogyny and homophobia.
The solution is to seize the internet and put it under the control of those who understand how to properly utilize it.

presumably the original run of "my little pony." but i think most mlp fans were probably just being born around the time of its airing, so i doubt nostalgia plays a huge role
